The TV Villains of JJ Abrams...

Recommended Posts

PoI definitely has some good and fascinating villains. Elias. Greer. Control. Not so much Dominic. This is a continuation of the key role complex black hats have played in shows that J.J. Abrams has been associated with. Alias had Arvin Sloane and Julian Sark. Fringe had Newton, DRJ, William Bell, and of course, Walternate (blue timeline version).

What say you? Who are some of the bad guys you can't help but like in PoI?

Stanton! Loved her, always will feel like they should have done more with her.

I really liked S2-S3 Greer, and want them to give Greer some bite back in S5, he was too tame last season. I also thought Martine was a great villain that had a lot of untapped potential when she died, though I understand that Buono landing a series on NBC probably forced the writers' hands. But Martine rocked the Terminator vibe.

Elias and Control are both great in their own ways. (Hersh as an accessory to Control, of course!) Elias makes Reese interesting, and I would pay to watch a spinoff of Control vs Root/Shaw/Finch.

Dominic was awful and, maybe unpopular opinion time, I was never that impressed with the guy who played Simmons. He had like zero range. Every appearance of his was exactly the same. Talk about one-note. I found HR really tiresome by the end of S1 because he was its face.

What a cool thread!

Fave villains? Definitely Elias, Scarface, Alonzo Quinn, Patrick Simmons, the old white-haired HR guy who looked like he swallowed a toad and took "rooftop meetings," Hersh, Ma'am, "Peter Collier," circa 2013-2015 Greer, Kara Stanton, and Link from the Brotherhood.

Disclosure: I figured Clarke Peters, Boris McGiver and Jamie Hector would knock it out of the ballpark since they were so good as Lester Freamon, Lieutenant Marimow and Marlo Stansfield in The Wire

Least-faves? Smirking Mark Snow, "Special Counsel," Martine Broussard (her *NeckSnap* being my all-time fave Root moment), Dominic, Harper, Claire.

Honestly, I think the PoI recurring villains start out fine but I sour quickly for a few reasons.

1. The writers try to make me sympathize or think something like "they are bad but not that bad." (Elias is still a vile human being to me but great complicated  character.)

2. They are redeemed (Root is a psycho but on our guys side now)

3. Or they twirl their mustaches so often that their hands cramp (HR and Greer)

Oh, I forgot Collier! I think because in my mind he's been downgraded from "villain" to "poor confused sap" after the end of S3. But I agree he was great--the actor was SUPER compelling and they made him a pretty 3D character that was understandable but still bad. And props again to the actor, Leslie Odom Jr--I wish we could have cloned him and had the clone play Dominic, he's what Dominic should have been. Tons of screen presence and charisma.
