Mo - General Discussion

I'm so glad there's now a forum for this show.

I haven't watched season two yet, as I want to re-watch season one first (since it has been so long).  I am anti-religion, so I didn't think a show where the family's religious practices were so prominent was going to be my jam, bit I really dug it.  I love the accurate representation of immigration court and refugee status, and I really enjoyed the performances.  The actor playing Mo's girlfriend (see, it has been so long I've forgotten the character's name) did well in a small role in an episode of Major Crimes, so I recognized her immediately.  She did a great job in this, and I enjoyed the character in her relationship with Mo, dealings with his family, being a boss in a male-dominated industry, and putting that snotty rich friend and her husband in their place.

Season two wasn't as funny as season one, and I have no problem with that.  I think they did a good job of showing how Mo repeatedly can't get out of his own way, alongside the continued honest representation of all the institutional barriers he faces.  The dream sequences were hilarious, especially the Shawshank one.  The finale, with them finally getting to visit Palestine, was powerful.  And I loved the discussion Nadia and Yusra had about needing to stay informed without obsessively watching/reading news coverage -- "We’re more than our pain and suffering, Mama. But you wouldn’t know it watching this news” was beautiful.

I didn't rewatch season 1.  Just started on season 2.

I'd forgotten that he was in the back of a truck where robbers were stealing his mother's olive trees and the truck went to Mexico.

So now he's in Mexico working all kinds of odd jobs, trying to get back to the US but he's not a US citizen and his asylum hearing is coming up, after over 20 years of waiting.

Turns out one of his regular customers for his falafel tacos he sells on the street is the wife of the US Ambassador and she seems to have taken a liking to Mo.

She invites him to her home for a party and will have her husband talk to him, try to help him get back to the US, where his family and girlfriend are.

Well turns out this cougar wants him and Mo doesn't want to anger her husband, who could help him enter the US.

But the husband, the Ambassador, not only wants Mo to sleep with his wife, he wants to watch.

Mo says he's in a committed relationship and he'd have performance anxiety anyways.  Ambassador says no problem.

Somehow the Palestinian-Israeli situation comes up the Mo points out that Israel is occupying Palestinian lands.  Ambassador doesn't see it that way and tries to give Mo a chance to walk it back.

Of course we know what happens, Mo has to use coyotes to try to sneak back into the US.

Somehow he gets an immigration agent to call his lawyer -- yeah it was a bet that he could sink a jump shot with a piece of crumpled aluminum foil shaped like a small basketball.
