S01.E04: Kaplar

Recommended Posts

Him "hacking" into the Keplar computer through the password of his co-worker makes no sense. By what they've shown, they have tight knowledge about who's in the building at any time, so even if nobody else is in that room with him, they'd know that his co-worker is not there at the time of log-in to physically snoop around. What they would know is that he's there. So much for hacking masterminds.

This whole show is a little dumb.

This show thinks it’s smart but it’s not.

The characters do ridiculous things just to move the plot forward.

  • Ed’s colleague at Kaplar simply leaves her archive card (with username and password) on display.
  • A math genius like Ed doesn’t know how to screenshot because he rarely uses a computer as it isn’t powerful enough and he doesn’t own a smartphone.
  • Based on their findings on NSA’s Syracuse, Taylah has a suspicion that it’s an inside job but she doesn’t hesitate to tell Jane (the boss of French-based NSA office) about it. Why would she do that?
  • Why a hotel in Baghdad, Iraq has an Iranian flag 🇮🇷 at their reception desk?

Agree with everything you said -- with all the security in place, there's no way he would have been able to get anywhere in their systems without alerts pinging left and right. He only knows about the security they told him about -- any company who has that kind of security will also have keystroke tracking and a lot of other stuff. I'm not even going to touch her remote-ing in like she's the IT helpdesk checking someone's settings.

I will say re: the screenshot, tho', I'm a Mac user and have been for years -- I have no idea how to take a screenshot on a PC other than going through the snip tool, so I'll grant the not knowing how to do a screenshot.

But again, a company with all that security is going to have some sort of capability to prevent screenshotting -- hell, I tried to take a screen grab of a show to put on a post here and it was blacked out -- there was a control to prevent unauthorized recordings/screen grabs.

Other than a sniper not being able to take Taylah out as she ran down a fully exposed path with no one else on it, this episode got the biggest eye rolls so far.

We'll see how they bring this all together, because there's no way he's just going to be able to go off and live a happy carefree life under a new identity. He's too single-mindedly focused on the maths, so he's not going to be renting out wakeboards at some remote tropical resort. Either he's going to be forced to work for the NSA, kidnapped and forced to work for whomever paid to keep him alive by offing Kasim, or he's going to be taken out.

I bet they'll come up with some convoluted nonsense tho', which will be disappointing, because overall this has been a decent watch.
