So, who's going home?  I bet it's NOT Nat.  Probably not Pezza either.

Nat has (double) immunity, she's untouchable.

I want Sav to be eliminated today. But I think we will be saying goodbye to Lochy. 😣

Well, even though I'm sad Lochie was the one to go, if we can believe the feedback from the judges (and let's face it, we probably can't!) he was the logical choice.  I must admit, I do agree with Poh that perhaps having that much time didn't actually help Lochie because he just kept on randomly adding things to his dish that it didn't need.  Yet Harry, with only 25 minutes due to his inability to "maths" 😂, came up with a cohesive and tasty dish, even doing a couple of pivots in his plan when he realised he didn't have eggs in the under bench staples for an egg wash.  I'm prepared to concede that Pezza would have cooked the duck really well but we knew he was good at cooking huge hunks of meat in week 1.  And (much as it pains me to say something positive about Sav these days) Sav, against all my predictions, didn't just bid for spices and grains and actually made something different for once.  Only took her 10 weeks but I partly blame the judges for that because she's been getting away with it every week, just like Harry has with the fish.  They didn't even say anything too critical when he made fish ice-cream 🤮  Anyway, best of luck to Lochie and I hope he gets to go down a food career path now.

Tonight's recap.

Quote

Finally, “pantry items” – things like empty Vegemite jars and mouse droppings – are sold. Sav pumps 50 minutes into “flavour bombs”, which are like bath bombs but smell worse. Lachie only has to spend 10 minutes on herbs because herbs suck, and Harry, having overspent, watches helplessly as Josh gets spices for five minutes, leaving Harry with grains, which are about as much use as cardboard.

Pezza decides to make “duck two ways”, crossing his fingers that at least one of those ways is “edible”. Andy, sensing that Josh might be on the verge of developing confidence, quickly nips it in the bud, running to his bench to let him know that cooking duck and fruit is incredibly difficult and failure almost certain. Josh thanks him for his assistance.

This quote is just for @Snazzy Daisy Sav begins with her eggs, fretting that 45 minutes might not be long enough for them to hatch. She declares that she doesn’t want to be in her comfort zone, because anyone who’s in their comfort zone at this stage of the competition doesn’t deserve to be there. Anyone who is in their comfort zone might say that it’s actually the one contestant who has been eliminated once already who doesn’t deserve to be there, but hey.

Finally Harry begins. He has 25 minutes to make something good out of red snapper, alliums and grains, meaning he has very little time to think about how impossible this is. Although it’s a huge challenge, it’s made much easier by Andy and Sofia soaking up five minutes in useless conversation. He tells the judges that he plans to egg wash the fish. The judges remind him he doesn’t have any eggs – Sav has the eggs. The possibility that Harry was unconscious for the first half of this episode has become very real.

Harry brings forth his semolina snapper, which only took 25 minutes to cook but looks like it’s been sitting on a deserted galleon for fifty years. Despite appearances, the judges rave about how incredibly foodlike Harry’s dish is.

S16•E41 - Time Auction Elimination

Having the most time is a curse! Dammit Lochy, you overthink everything. You make yourself vulnerable because the judges will nitpick everything to save Pezza and Sav. Anyway, all the best Lochy. Au revoir!

Harry has f*cked himself! The Fish Guy is not a Math Guy. It’s karma for intentionally raising the duck’s price when he’s actually eyeing for the fish. Being quick-witted has totally saved him today.

Andy and Sofia singing praises for Pezza are just nauseating. None of them commenting about his basic AF plating. 🤮

Steamed egg and tomato? Yuck! So Sav has finally admitted that she’s been cooking the same things throughout the competition. The realization only comes AFTER 10 weeks. What a timing. Whatevs! 🙄

Welcome to the Episode of Egregious Favouritism, brought to you by the good people at Harvey Norman ™️

I absolutely call bullshit on Pezza's little cabbage rolls being a better dish than Mimi's okonomiyaki.  Look at what she got done in her 75 minutes and it looked incredibly tasty, and he walks up with four cabbage rolls and a tiny jug of sauce.  Andy has never made his personal favouritism more obvious than tonight when he said that Pezza reminds him of himself when HE was in the competition.  And as for telling him, "If you keep cooking like this, you could be the one lifting that trophy!" do NOT get me started.  I don't want Nat to win either but if he does it would be as bad as last year with Brent.  Mimi, you were totally robbed.

Speaking of favouritism, I think Nat should actually have been in the bottom three instead of Darrsh but if you're Nat, unevenly cooked spatchcock (which was the main part of her dish) is apparently less of a problem than a too-sweet puree.  Yeah, OK, whatever.  😏

I'm OK with Sav being bottom three because a nearly raw egg along with overcooked poultry are two quite bad errors (the overcooked poultry actually causing Jean-Cristophe to be mega critical for once).  I'm sorry to say Harry also should be there because tonight was not the night to be making a chicken wrap and he should have realised that.  It's a shame he is so absolutely in the "fish guy" lane because in a competition like this, he just isn't going to be able to make it every single time (although he's certainly tried) and it will likely stop him from getting much further.

I don't want Darrsh to go and I'd rather Harry didn't, so with a bit of luck it's bye-bye Sav tomorrow night.

S16•E42 - Everything Mystery Box

At Top 6, these guys are still making pedestrian dishes - cabbage roll, savory pancake, chicken wrap, fried/chargrilled chicken etc.

And in Top 6, they are still making basic mistakes - undercooked egg, overcooked chicken, uneven chargrilled chicken, overly sweet sauce, incohesive elements etc.

Mimi, what’s with the heavy makeup today?

Nat continues acting like she knows it all when Poh cautioning her about sugar in the sesame and how it’s gonna affect the caramelization of the chicken. Then the chicken gets stuck to the grill. Unlike some other contestants, Nat doesn’t incorporate some ingredients into her main elements, she just uses them as garnishes. Yet the judges all think she is  “chef ready”. 🙄

Every time Sofia and Andy eating Pezza’s dishes be like…

Well, I never got to find out why the others kept calling him Darrsh-ayyy but either way, I'm sorry to see Darrsh go.  He is a talented cook and did some excellent desserts this year, most of which were not made in the blast chiller for which I give him a lot of kudos.  I just think because he's not really a savoury cook, the sort of care and attention he would give to a dessert was missing tonight for this savoury dish.  Whereas Harry, the fish guy, was able to use his expertise to catch up huge amounts of time when he was behind as well as understanding exactly what that consomme needed and prepping all the different seafood elements to a high standard.  Sav, well, aside from working out that hack for peeling peas, she didn't have a good day at the office but was just lucky Darrsh had a worse one.

Nice exit interview from Darrsh, who never wants to see another pea. 😂

S16•E43 - Guillaume Brahimi’s Pressure Test

This is not a pressure test, it’s a torture test!

The amount of peas in this recipe is ridiculous. To peel 90 peas just to put them around the plate is so unnecessary. A d!ck move by Guillaume. If this is a dish fits for a king, the king can go hungry.

On the day that they are NOT cooking, why are we still being forced to listen to Nat and Pezza narrating? SHHH!

JC and Guillaume gossiping in French is just cute. And JC’s confidence in Harry shows that he’s a good mentor. I wouldn’t call Harry intelligent though, maybe street smart. He failed math during the time auction challenge and he’s not good in Geography either. Anyway, Harry’s consommé looks amazing. Great job on surviving another elimination, Hazz. 👍🏻

WTH with the double hand kissing? Sav’s hand must have smelled like crab. 😷

Yesterday, Sav boiled a spatchcock and failed to properly poach an egg. Today she confidently stirs the raft when she’s not supposed to. And she thinks she’s Masterchef ready?

Naughty Darrsh sh!t-stirring with Harry, getting him more confused. Love it! 🤣

Now I understand why some people think there’s something going on between Darrsh and Nat. She has her focus on him and keeps talking to him the entire time. The BFFs.

Pezza outlasting Darrsh is absofu*kinglutely crazy. And the one trick pony lady quietly makes it to Top 5. UGH.

Give it up for Darrshyyyy everybody! 😭

I only have ONE favorite left. 😩

 Harry

Darrsh, Lochy, Sumeet, David, Snez, Juan.

But she did say in one episode that she came out as gay to her parents whilst at school still. I could certainly understand being attracted to Darrsh, though, aka Peter Andre II 😂

I guess I am now Team Mimi and Team Harry. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Since she's crushing hard on Hugh Allen the other day, Nat could be bi.

On X, someone said Darrsh looks like one of Aussie footballer. I can see the resemblance...

Why am I not even slightly surprised that the two contestants remaining who we know one judge particularly favours (Pezza/Andy, Nat/Poh) ended up with the top two dishes?  I'm no fan of Nat's but I'd still prefer her over Pezza to win a challenge.  I personally think Harry's dish probably should have been top two but of course Pezza had to be there because he cooked a big hunk of meat well (I hate to sound like a broken record but we knew he could do that from week 1), he cut some starchy vegetables into cubes (doesn't he have any other plating ideas?) and he added a jus.  Big deal. 😵

I have a feeling Sav will be the next one booted because the judges, who have soft-soaped her up until now, were quite harsh about her dish tonight.

On a sad note, I'm wondering what Sofia meant by her dad not being able to eat anymore.  Is he sick with some kind of mouth/oesophageal cancer where he has to be fed through a tube or something awful like that?

I'm very intrigued by the episode on Sunday - is it a taste test featuring absolutely disgusting ingredients?

S16•E44 - Family Emotion Whoring Immunity Challenge

An emotional manipulation episode. I skip the first 13 minutes and goes straight to the cooking part.

Nat wins the last immunity. Shocking!!! Her roasted bone marrow dish doesn’t look appetizing if compared to the one cooked by SERAI’s chef in S15 (beef kilawin with bone marrow butter).

Harry’s garlic chilli prawn tostadas look yummy and summery. 😋

With that level of cooking and creativity, I don’t understand the brouhaha over Sav being one of the finalist.

Pezza’s plating today seems a bit elegant than usual. In the image below, he looks so annoyed (and determined) after losing that immunity to Nat. Harry says Pezza is a competitive person. We will see him fighting with everything he has to make it to the finale.

Family Emotion Whoring Immunity Challenge

🤣 So cynical, and yet so accurate!

Just realised there was a recap last night.  He's getting increasingly snarky about the very obvious Nat favouritism.

Quote

With the departure of Darrsh for failing to be French enough, there are only five amateurs left, all of them living with the terrifying knowledge that just one tiny slip could see them eliminated, unless they’re Nat. “You’ve all grown so much since you’ve walked through those doors,” says Sofia, concerned about the contestants’ hormonal imbalance. But have they grown enough to win immunity tonight? And does that question even make sense?

Nat is paying tribute to her mother’s incredible ability to make delicious dishes out of leftovers, which is a huge challenge as it requires her to cook several meals, eat most of them, and then gather the scraps to cook another one. In only 75 minutes this will be difficult, and the fact that, like Sav, she has started to go slow motion will make it even harder.

Andy, angry that Poh is taking over his traditional role as the underminer of everyone’s confidence, redoubles his efforts by visiting Harry to tell him that his idea is weird and stupid. Harry is making prawn tostadas. “A tostada is kind of like a cracker,” he says, as he stuffs the dough with gunpowder. He has never made tostada shells before, which is why this is a fitting tribute to Nonna, who only ever made things she’d never made before.

Andy moves on to Mimi and tells her that he really loves her idea, presumably just to make Harry feel even more insecure. Andy’s mind games are becoming ever more fiendishly intricate. The judges gather to hear who Andy thinks is the most likely to humiliate themselves.

What IS pretty is Mimi’s noodles. They are the best-looking noodles she’s ever seen, and it takes a lot of persuasion to prevent her asking them out for a drink. Mimi hopes that she has made an umami bomb, which I think is kind of like a flavour profile. Tasting her broth, she finds that it is, at best, an umami party popper, and frantically tries to fix it.

Next, Nat and her mother-inspired roast bone marrow with a whole bunch of other stuff lying around the place. It’s a big weird mess, but with their refined palates, the judges can tell that the dish was made by Nat and is therefore wonderful.

The two best dishes were Josh’s and Nat’s. It’s a close run thing, but after careful consideration, the judges have decided that Nat’s dish was cooked by Nat. Josh, unfortunately, missed this essential element, and so Nat wins immunity and her mother is officially proud of her.
