aghst June 3 Share June 3 Kind of interesting, real life spies, double agents. Anyone who's watched The Americans may find this of interest. Of course this is higher level than the characters in that series and it seems the action takes place more in the UK, since this is produced by the BBC, than in the US. We were closer to a war than anybody knew because of Able Archer in 1983, with distrust and paranoia on the Soviet side, when Andropov briefly was in charge but was monitoring statements by leaders like Reagan. Andropov was all KGB so he was paranoid. If he survived, Gorbachev never gets in power and maybe the USSR doesn't dissolve when it did. The NATO exercises raised alarms among the Soviet leadership, unbeknownst to US and NATO allies. Only 40k troops involved but they deployed strategic bombers like the B-52. Reagan called the USSR the "evil empire" repeatedly and once joked before a radio address that the bombing starts soon. 1 Link to comment
