shapeshifter July 15, 2023 Share July 15, 2023 (edited) The Retrievals is widely available for free, including from This American Life (thisamericanlife.org/804/the-retrievals) which includes a transcript. The podcast is on The New York Times (with a transcript), Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Amazon Music, some of which may have paywalls. As of today, July 15, 2023, 3 of the 5 episodes have been released. The 4th is due to drop Thursday, July, 27th, and the last on the following Thursday, August 3. About the podcast: Quote At a Yale fertility clinic, dozens of women began their I.V.F. cycles full of expectation and hope. Then a surgical procedure caused them excruciating pain. In the hours that followed, some of the women called the clinic to report their pain — but most of the staff members who fielded the patients’ reports did not know the real reason for the pain, which was that a nurse at the clinic was stealing fentanyl and replacing it with saline. What happened at that clinic? What are the stories we tell about women's pain and what happens when we minimize or dismiss it? The Retrievals, a new five-part series from Serial Productions, is hosted and reported by longtime This American Life producer and editor Susan Burton. We're excited to bring you the first episode today. (The New York Times) In addition to commenting about the events detailed in the podcast, listeners on social media have shared similar experiences of horrific, unexpected pain during medical procedures that were not associated with those covered in the podcast, but equally denied and ignored. BetyBee July 15, 2023 Share July 15, 2023 I've been listening to this podcast. It's infuriating to think of how that selfish, addicted nurse put so many women through tortuous pain. It's also infuriating that no one listened to these women! 1 2 Link to comment

I didn't feel outrage (and rage) until Episode 3: The Sentence. My post on social media was: Quote Having been gaslighted myself about non-existent anesthesia during surgery, the outcome of this episode leaves me with an un-released sob in my throat 1 Link to comment
shapeshifter July 27, 2023 Author Share July 27, 2023 I just caught up on episode 4, "The Clinic," available at: The New York Times (with a transcript) Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Amazon Music Again, the experiences described mirrored what I felt at different times and places during different surgical procedures with ineffective pain control. It's similar to listening to the MeToo testimonies 10 years ago — a mix of feeling validated but also feeling violated all over again. 2 Link to comment
shapeshifter August 20, 2023 Author Share August 20, 2023 I finally listened to the final episode, #5, The Outcomes. It took me a while to get in the frame of mind to be able to listen. The first half was surprisingly validating, almost uplifting, listening to the victims' stories after the lawsuit. But the second half was awful. There was so much injustice in the end. So much still swept under the rug. I have a lot of thoughts. 1 Link to comment

It was too much for me even after about 10 minutes. I appreciate that someone has done this podcast for those who are not already aware of such situations. 1 Link to comment
