Show versus History: Did That Really Happen?

I'm curious about the depiction of Domitian.  According to history, Domitian married at age 19 and had several children.  Yet in this series he is depicted as the evil and ruthless gay brother, who is so jealous of his boyfriend/servant/slave's dalliance with another slave that he kills the other slave and has his boyfriend's tongue cut out.

Wondering why the show producers omitted the wife and went this route.  It's ancient history, so of course many details can't ever be known for certain.  For all we know, Domitian did indeed have an open affair with his slave.  But omitting his wife and children seems to be an interesting choice considering how obsessed Roman emperors were with issues of succession.

Titus was also previously married before he married the Roman wife depicted in this series, and he had a daughter.  Vespasian was going to marry off Titus' daughter to Domitian but Domitian wanted someone else instead.
