Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel - General Discussion

HBO standup special. Premiered tonight (Friday) on HBO and HBO Max. Filmed earlier in the year

Carmichael comes out as gay to his audience, which wasn’t revealed publicly until earlier today in an HBO press release. It was in parts very funny and other times a quite uncomfortable meditation on his family and his coming out. And he reveals Rothaniel is his given name(I believe Jerrod is his middle name)

The only word I can use is “raw.”  I laughed at times, but this didn’t come across as “comedy” so much as “facing family trauma with dark humor.”  And that’s not a bad thing. This was as real as it gets, and I applaud Jerrod.
