Epeolatrix July 27, 2020 Share July 27, 2020 The first thing I ever saw Matthew Rhys in was Julie Taymor's Titus, where he played Goth (literal Goth, not Hot Topic Goth) villain Demetrius. My favorite description of the character is "He is a quarrelsome, lascivious, and violent boy, with very low opinions on women – though he does love his mother." 1 Link to comment

And he was actually really funny in it, despite being a murdering rapist. 2 Link to comment
Epeolatrix July 27, 2020 Share July 27, 2020 Taymor made it less tragic and more Shakespeare splatter-punk, I think. Everything was so heightened, excessive, and scenery chewing! It did have wonderful performances, though, and it was beautifully staged. Link to comment

Is it possible to be Titus Andronicus more excessive and scenery chewing than the original? I mean, it's a batshit play! Link to comment
Epeolatrix July 27, 2020 Share July 27, 2020 I'd always assumed it was taken more seriously as a tragedy at the time, and that the movie played up the comedic bits. Link to comment
