The Tom Ripley book series by Patricia Highsmith includes The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955), Ripley Under Ground (1970), Ripley’s Game (1974), The Boy Who Followed Ripley (1980), and Ripley Under Water (1991). Each book has the potential to be an 8 episode TV season. There was a 1960's French-language movie adaptation of The Talented Mister Ripley starring Alain Delon entitled Purple Moon. The Talented Mr. Ripley was made into a 1999 feature film starring Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf, Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood, Cate Blanchett as Meredith Logue, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles. Ripley's Game movie adaptations include 1977's The American Friend, starring Dennis Hopper and 2002's Ripley's Game, starring John Malkovich. In 2005, Barry Pepper played Tom Ripley in the movie Ripley Under Ground. Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by Herbert Greenleaf, a wealthy shipbuilder to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home and accept a postion in the family business. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.
