  1. It was great to see Grace win.  She deserved it and was the most consistently outstanding performer during the competition.  That reminded me of the emotion that an AI final created.  It was funny to see the last two being a little girl against grown ups.

Certainly the most shocking moment was Brian going out at 4.  I'm sure he had read that he could win or at least come in second.  You could see the shock on the judge's faces.  Reminded me of when Tamyra was eliminated on Idol.

I have some comments about the voting that most of you may find interesting later tonight.

  2. To inform..

The show doesn't put anyone in order.  It's randomly picked.  So, no pimping happens.  Anyway, that pimp spot nonsense is basically just a internet creation.  No evidence to prove the last spot is the best or the first is the worst..  Laura was there last week and Sal beat her.  And Sal again was in spot 1 and came in 5th.

As far as judges saying who's going to win...they did that a lot on Idol.  Remember, Cowell saying "Not only will you win this competition, but you will sell more records than any Idol in history. "  He was, of course, speaking about Carrie Underwood and it was early in the top ten.  He was prophetic in that one.

Plus, the show has no stake in who wins.  They are making money off of commercials.  They are just trying to get as many people to watch the show.  Obviously, that is the reason for the massive pimp pre-stories for all of the candidates.

And finally, I can't understand the words to any rap song or many rock songs.  It doesn't seem to hurt them.

  3. The Show...the bad...

Nick's continued awful wardrobe.  Does he have any clothes that actually fit and aren't mismatched.

Mel B's continued aggravation at Simon teasing her.  She falls for it every time and it's annoying.

Plus, her obvious displeasure at being on with Tape Face.  That was uncomfortable.

    A little much...

I know the show is trying to create emotion for the contestants with their backstory, but wow, talk about going overboard.  They make AI look like they did nothing.

We have seen stories of transgender, bullying, grandma dying, being gay, mother dying, adoptive parents, growing up in the slums, going to slum schools, OCD and more.   People talk about the show pimping Grace or others, wow, everyone is pimped on this show way over the top.

  4. Who should win...

Grace, Laura or Brian.  They have been the most consistent performers and deserve it.  I'll take Grace by a hair, but I would be happy any of the three.

    Who will win...

Grace or Brian.  They might have been the two top vote getter in the semi's, while Laura was in the runoff.

    Who could upset them?

We can discount Tape Face, Jon, The Clairvoyants, Viktor, Sofie.  All niche acts that could have won, but would have had to have given an incredible performance and I don't think any of them did.

That leaves Linkin Bridge or Sal.  It's possible, but I doubt it.

  5. I feel like I can give a very qualified opinion as I don't have biases like some do against certain groups of performers.  In fact, I like all the finalists.

    The Performances....

Tape Face - He gave his best performance in his first one and since then, it has been inventive, but nothing that great.   This one was just okay.

Jon - His magic has been so much better.  Plus, I wasn't sure was he doing magic, trying to win or doing a positive thinking seminar.  A little uneven.

The Clairvoyants - After that great performance last week, I was looking for something spectacular.  It was good, but not better than last week.

Sal -  Good song choice and his performance was one of his best.  He has done everything he can to win, but will it be enough?

Sofie - So great to watch, but again, I think her performance was better last week.

Viktor - Just like Sofie it was great to look at, but I think his best was last week.

Linkin Bridge - One of my favorites.  They always sound very good.

Brian Crum - I didn't care for his arrangement, but he sang it outstanding.  But, I liked his performance last week more.

Laura -  She looked incredible and sang the same way.

Grace - As usual, she continues to impress.  The presentation was excellent, her own song and her singing was impressive. It's easy to see why so many like her.

  6. My reasons...

Tape Face is a niche act.  He hasn't been as funny as the first time.  Unlikely that he will win after being in the runoff last time.

Jon is a magic act, but so are the Clairvoyants.  Their act is better.

Sal is going to beat Grace and Brian?  Seems highly unlikely.

Sofie and Victor both had beautiful stage performances and maybe they could do it again and be even more incredible.  Probably not, but they have a chance.

The Clairvoyants had their best performance.  Can they pull off something even more sensational?  Maybe.

Laura and Linkin Bridge have both performed exceptionally.  Either would need the performance of their life to win.

Brian and Grace were probably the top vote getters from their respective groups.  Either would be tough to beat.  Beating both of them is going to take something special from the rest of the performers.

  7. (The Favorites)

    Brian Justin Crum (Singer)

    Grace VanderWaal (Singer/Songwriter/Ukeleist)

    (Could Win)

    Laura Bretain (Opera Singer)

    Linkin' Bridge (Vocal Group)

    The Clairvoyants (Mentalists)

    Sofie Dossi (Contortionist/Aerialist/Archer)

    Viktor Kee (Juggler)

    (Longshots)

    Sal Valentinetti (Big Band Singer)

    Tape Face (Comedic Mime)

    Jon Dorenbos (Magician)

  8. What a huge upset that Calysta didn't make the finals.  In fact, she didn't even make the top six.

And neither did Jayna.   I guess that theory that everyone listens to the judges and all the voters are stupid who only vote for girl singers took a big hit.

When a student makes a mistake in class nowadays the teacher is told to tell the student, "oh , you're almost there", or "you're close" or " you almost got it". The teacher never tells a student they got the answer wrong. In my days, the teacher told me straight out I was wrong in my answer. I appreciated that. In fact it made me work harder to come up with the correct answer. I think today it's believed that the kids will have long lasting issues if filled with much negativity. Todays kids can not handle negative critiques. They're too fragile!

I believe that's what's going on with Grace VanderWaal. She won't be able to handle the truth. She's a cute kid so how do you tell this cute kid you don't have a good voice? How do you tell Grace she needs to take vocal lessons. No one can't understand what you're singing about! What other reason could there be for the judges building her up so high?

Grace VanderWaal will win AGT. Mark my word. They've build her up so much there is only one direction to go and that's "down", and the TPTB aren't going to let that happen. Oh probably Brian Crum will come in second. It will be exciting but the winner is already picked.

I was disappointed with Deadly Games and Malevo going home. Sal and Laura Bretans should've been eliminated.

I wish there wasn't a wild card. How many left , ten? Just vote on the top five and move on.

    Until next time.....

And yet, they have eliminated kids from this season.

Plus, they build up all of these acts.

And evidently, they are a lot of people that do think Grace can really sing.

What's the deal with this show and opera singers? My guess is that no more than 1% of the audience ever listens to opera other than on AGT, and yet the opera wailers always get lots of votes. Would more than a tiny handful of viewers actually pay to see them? Maybe it's the novelty factor, but I would much rather vote for singers who produce music with natural human voices.

How many people watch jugglers, mentalists, contortionists or danger acts?  Other than singers, most of these acts are niche entertainment.

I'll stop with this...The show last night was LIVE.  Malevo was given a special effect slo-mo to cap their performance.  This goes well beyond any lighting or staging.  A dance team was given a hero effect not seen by any human in that auditorium by digitally altering a......dance move

There is an enormous amount of reporting through the years, including direct quotes from participants and producers, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of placement, and the manipulative decisions taken.

    Cheers.

A slow mo effect is an advantage?

And so-called advantages of placement are highly subjective.  This past week the so-called pimp spot received less votes than the first to perform so advantage doesn't necessarily translate into success.

Again, shows only want to make money.  You have given no reason why anyone would attempt to so-call fix a show when there is no benefit for them.

  12. What the heck was that?  Shades of a wacky American Idol voting night.

Sal gets more votes than Laura Bretan?!??!?  Really?!?!?  Reallly?!?!??

Grace deserved it and I'm okay with Jon and Malevo making it, but Sal?!??!

He took the place of Edgar who should have been in there.

And I disagree about the judges pick.  Edgar had to be hoping that she would win the fan vote, because they had a chance to beat Tape Face with the judges, but when he won their fate was sealed.  Simon loves Laura and she is Mel B's golden girl.

I think maybe some of the voting results might be like AI.  Tamyra, Daughtery and Doolittle.  People vote for their favorites and sometimes too many don't vote for the outstanding one because they just assume they will get through.

...or maybe Sal and his family had a little talk with the vote counters.  :)

It would have been great to see the actual vote totals.

We can argue the term "fix."  For me, greasing the skids to oust the unfavored and assisting the chosen is fixing.  YMMV.

No evidence to suggest this happens, except unsubstantiated theories by conspiracy buffs.

Again, how does this help the show?  Losing millions in a scandal to help out a performer.   Not happening.

AGT has every reason to alter presentations, and have.  They have every reason to couch jidges comments, and have.  Placement of acts within a show, eg pimp spots, and favorable groupings as a season progresses?  Check, and check.

Editing the show is not fixing.

And placements, pimp spots and favorable groupings are more conspiracy theories by watchers with no evidence to support it.

Thank you for helping me make my point about Howie.  There was no obvious reason for him to shade the facts, yet he did.  What, or who, motivated him?   From where did his bias originate?  I am very comfortable believing that jidges, throughout the history of this show, and other "reality" competition shows, are given suggested scripts.   How many times have many of us have asked just what the heck a jidge saw that we missed, or how did they miss something really good that many of us saw?

Nope, you didn't make any point.   How do you know he shaded the facts?  I thought he just didn't count right.   He does seem to have a problem with his vision.

You disagreeing with a judge does not rise the level of fixing the show.

Plenty of hyperbole to go around for those two... but I wonder which one will get the "Pimp Spot!" hehe!

Laura got it this time and it didn't seem to help all that much.  Maybe it's overrated.

Anyone else catch Howie in his lie as to how much coinage was on the table?  Ultimately, it appeared that there was $1.11 (it certainly was not $1.67 (to match the state values)).   But, the lie was early on.  Howie looked at the coins and quickly realized it wasn't close to what it needed to be, and he said it looked like $1.67.

Of course, the director missed shots which would have definitively proven it one way or another.   It could have been more amatuer hour garbage, or he was told to stay off any of those shots by a producer.

To me, it was an example of a "chosen" act getting benefits beyond doubts, if not facts, by the jidges - a form of fixed contests.

The act was still the best of the night, imo, but Howie's shenanigans were quite the tell, to me.

Oh stop with the conspiracy theories.  AGT has no reason to fix anything, but being caught would cost them millions.

The trick wasn't the amount, it was the states on the quarters.

  17. Some other observations...

I agree with others.. what's with Simon's total lack of understanding of magic.  Is it because he is British?  Yikes, no, there are no wizards, the tricks are mostly easily explainable.

Mel B keeps letting Simon taunts annoy her.  Is that about the 12th time it's happened?  Lighten up Spice Girl, he only keeps doing it because you keep responding.

I like Laura and Grace.  And I like their singing, unlike most here.  But,  wow, they are a little overboard with their praise.  A superstar?  The best ever?  I haven't seen any past seasons of AGT, but I know Evancho was on here and I'm sure there has been others that were very good.

Hey Nick, who is dressing you?  Your coat was too tight and your pants even tighter.    Nothing he ever wears is flattering.  Not only has Mariah passed you by, but style has too.

And I thought American Idol did puff pieces for their contestants.  They look practically benign to these sob stories.  And on that note, Sal's is the one that really hurts him.  He comes across as a Mafia guy.  Not going to beat the cute little girls.

  18. So, who will go through...

Grace and Laura will for sure.  And Musicality, Lori, Sal and Blake are toast.

That leaves Jon, Tape Face, Edgar, Deadly Games and Malevo fighting for 3 spots.

I'll take Edgar, Tape Face and Deadly Games, but it will be really close.  Could be any of the five, but all would be deserving.

  20. Rating tonight's performers...

Sal - 7.5 - It was good for what he does, but come on, that song isn't going to beat the other girl singers.  He needed something more inspirational.  That was more like the opening song of a concert tour.  He was done when he chose that song.

Musicality - 6.0 - It was just like Heidi said, sounded a good high school play.  They never had a chance and were only here for their last performance.  Easily the worst of the night.

Lori Mae Hernandez - 7.0 - Somewhat funny, the early jokes were okay.  She ended it pretty good, but nothing that will get her through.

Jon Dorembos - 8.0 - Good tricks and good use of the judges.  Entertaining, but his frantic style is still a little annoying.

Deadly Games - 8.5 - The whole stage, music, outfits and production were excellent.

Blake Vogt- 7.5 - Lame card trick.  If you couldn't figure that one out, yikes.

Tape Face - 8.0 - He made me laugh and is certainly inventive.

Edgar - 8.5 - Very good and likeable.

Grace Vanderwaal - 9.0 - Another outstanding performance.

Malevo - 8.5 - Visually stunning and entertaining.

Laura Bretan - 9.5 - Just flawless and very likeable.

  21. Here's my assessment of the performers and their chances to win.....

    (The Favorites)

    Laura Bretan

    Jayne Brown

    Calysta Bevier

    Viktor Kee

    Grace VanderWaal

    Brian Justin Crum

    Edgar

(Anyone of these favorites can win and wouldn't be surprised to see most of them in the finale.  Yep, and Viktor is the only non singer that has a good chance to win.)

    (A Slight Chance To Win)

    Tape Face

    Kadie Lynn

    Sal Valentinetti

    Soffi Dossi

    Jon Dorembos

    Linkin Bridge

    The Clairvoyants

    Blake Vogt

    Malevo

    Kaden Bart Rockett

    Steven Brundage

(I like Tape Face, Kadie Lynn and Linkin Bridge with the best chance to be in the finale from this group.)

    (The Longshots)

    Lori Mae Hernandez

    Musicality

Before any of you jump on me about the second group, it's not that they aren't talented, but look who they have to jump over to win.  Six singers who are good and a great juggler.  It's too much to over come.

Who will win?  Unlike American Idol when you knew it was one of two singers,  we just don't know.

And I would be happy with any of the favorites as I like all of them.

And there are many who didn't.  Depends on the individual.  Many have no problems.  Many normal kids have problems later in life too.

And as far as fame and money, that's why they have parents.  Kids aren't prepared to handle anything in life.  That's why they stay with their parents for 18 years to learn.
