I finally saw Holiday in Handcuffs, which I've had on the DVR since last December. I'll admit, I was ready to bail after about 15-20 minutes, because I absolutely, positively detest movies about women who are ditzy hot messes--and Melissa Joan Hart's character was the hottest mess I've seen in some time.

But I was wrapping gifts while I watched, and I couldn't reach the remote, and a strange thing happened: about 45 minutes in (maybe a little less, since I couldn't FF through the commercials), I started liking it. And laughing. And tearing up. And when it was all over, I was glad I'd watched it. When it started, I had NO clue how they could possibly redeem the main character, but darned if they didn't. I'd easily give it a 7/10. Or maybe even 7.75 (no higher, though, because I still hate the hot mess thing).

Haha.  I felt the same way when I watched it for the first time.  I hated Melissa's character at first, and thought there was no way the movie would ever be able to redeem her character and sell her romance with her kidnap victim.  I was wrong, and the movie ended up being very enjoyable.

Their official position is that they value and are committed to diversity so I think it's fair to ask them to live up to their official position. It's likely a commercially driven position but it's what they espouse.

But if pretty much all the other hundreds of channels feature same sex relationships, then wouldn't Hallmark expressly avoiding them increase diversity in the types of channels and content available?  Otherwise they're all the same.

I don't have a problem with Hallmark removing the ad, and I wish they would have stuck with the decision. It's far more disturbing to me that they now look wishy washy all because of a group that bullied them because they didn't like what they did.

Bottom line, people have different morals. If you don't like what a channel does, turn it off. But they have equal rights to express those beliefs and shouldn't be bullied, and they don't owe anyone on the face of the earth, an explanation as to why they do what they do. Bullying someone on social media and spewing hate just because they don't agree with you, just makes YOU look like....a whiny bully throwing a fit because you didn't get your way.

That's how I feel about the whole thing.  I prefer to have a diversity of opinions, and people should be allowed to have their beliefs and preferences and not be attacked for them or bullied until they "get in line" with the dominant belief/opinion.  The hypocrisy astounds me.

Remember when we used to respect other people's opinions, beliefs, religious views and preferences?  Now if any of those are counter to what a certain vocal group (especially the media) deems acceptable, it has to be stomped out by any means possible (including financial retribution) and the people stomping on the stompees get to feel all self-righteous about it.

Just wait until the mob-rule thought police turns against the current bullies some day.  Karma can be a bitch.

The main disappointment for me is that the character of Mabel is entitled, selfish and opinionated.  She is being written more like a thoughtless, self-centered 12 year old than a young woman of college age, yet sometimes in appearance the actress shows her real age which is about 5 years older than Mabel.  She is a cliche character; one who makes me wonder if the writers have experience with young people around the age of Mabel's character. This is not about the actress' acting. It is about the writing!

Oh my God, I hate Mabel!  She pretty much ruins the show for me.  And it worries me that it might be a fairly accurate description of college kids her age, from my experience and from what I've read/seen.

In that episode in which Paul spoke to Mabel's film class -- those students were so rude, nasty and obnoxious to him, and so convinced that they had the moral high ground giving them the right to behave horribly.  It was very difficult to continue suffering through these episodes.

I feel like the show/writers have lost everything that gave the original its humor and charm.

Did anyone else catch Kayley Cuoco's voice in the voice of the Pool Monster?

Loved Georgie and Missy giving Sheldon pointers on playing sick. And of course Sheldon winds up spreading the germs he was so deathly afraid of.

I was wondering if that was Kaley.  I couldn't find any mention online about her appearing on Young Sheldon.

Anyway, I thought this was a very solid episode, and I laughed quite a bit.

Whoo boy.  Because of your recommendation, I threw this on in the background when I had to work. (I focus better with something on in the background.)  I concede the dude is hot but I found it kind of awful. But luckily not Hallmark blandly awful but delightfully awful.  Mockably awful. The kind of awful I'm mildly obsessed with.

I mean right off the bat the movie makes no sense.  This is a woman on an international flight that was diverted....for reasons?  Yet it's diverted into the middle of nowhere. Some place where there's no restaurant.  No hotels.  No nothing except an airport (apparently) and a train stop.

I gather to get anywhere, you need to take a train yet she's the only one waiting for a train.  There are no other passengers, no flight attendants, no pilots and no entourage.  Just her.  I thought perhaps this means she was on a private plane and did an emergency landing at an airstrip but through the movie they refer to catching another flight--another international flight to NY or Vienna--as if they happen all the time.  So basically, there's not only an airport in the middle of Nowhere England but there's an international airport in the middle of Nowhere, England.

She takes the train, falls asleep and ends up in another town in a bakery with another American.  She ends up going to stay at the most charmless B&B, owned by the male lead, that didn't even look like it was in England.  She admires the lead's art work which look as original as any ole print you'd see in Walmart.  Later, she writes in her diary the quote that actually made me gasp in delight.

"The inn is cozy, cute and warm, just like its owner."

How greatly cheesy is that quote?  Someone actually thought that was good dialogue and I am here for it.

Meanwhile, the male lead's mother, who has not met the female lead, Googles her name.  The lead's name is Jessica Bailey, which feels pretty common, yet somehow the mom automatically knew it was this famous opera singer.  Barely 15-30 minutes into the movie, everyone is acting like these two should be in love and together.

The daughter of the male lead has this weird affect where she calls the female lead "sweetheart" all the time.  Things like "you'll be back, sweetheart."  "It'll be okay, sweetheart."  The kid is like five years old but the words coming out of her mouth sound like they're from an 80 year condescending man.

The male lead lists off all the places he has been "Los Angeles, New York, Austin, TX" but his delivery makes it seem like Austin and Texas are as completely separate as LA and NYC.

The main couple goes for a rowboat ride even though they're all decked out in winter gear on land.  They acknowledge it's colder on the river but....really?

I think the budget is so low that they only rented one car for the movie.  The male lead looks to be driving the silver car that was her taxi.

I think the budget is so low #2 in that sometimes the movie had the feel of a low budget horror.  In fact, there were a few times the camera angle would hit the male lead's mom and made it seem like she was going to stab everyone.

The female lead is a singer who travels a lot.  Distance isn't a barrier for visiting.  But of course when she leaves, everyone acts like she's dead...as if going to a Christmas Eve concert meant she could never return ever.  As if the town were Brigadoon and would disappear at the stroke of midnight.

Speaking of dead, the male lead is a widower.  He has a neighbor he fights with a lot.  I thought for a while that the neighbor was going to be his ex-father-in-law.  But not, he's just a cantankerous old coot that eventually decides against selling so his kids and grandkids can pick berries. (yes, there's a real estate plot that I won't go into.)

Finally, at the end, everyone gets up to sing a Christmas carol and I think we're going to finally hear the beautiful female lead's voice.  Nope, she blends in the background of the other singers.  I'm beginning to think she really couldn't sing.

I don't have Showtime, so I'll probably never see A Very British Christmas... but your epic post was more entertaining than a number of Christmas movies I've watched this year. (Or at least tried to watch before giving up.)  Thanks for your hilarious recap! :)

Wait, what? I can't see the reboot...Mark and Fran did get back together and were together at the end of the show...he has a new wife? No mention of Fran?

Thank you for posting that... I thought I was remembering the original series wrong.

Yes, unfortunately Mark has a new wife.  Fran was mentioned, but I only recall hearing her name once and I don't even remember what was said.  There may have been more than one mention, but I watched the episodes quickly, (feeling mostly annoyed,) and it's all kind of fuzzy.  It sucks because it seemed like Fran was mostly erased from existence, and I was not expecting that at all.

We won't see Fran unless she's recast, and I doubt that would make anyone happy. Leila Kenzle retired from acting and is a practicing therapist now, and while other reboots have pulled in people who aren't really acting anymore, I think they announced she wouldn't return.

I was so disappointed that Fran wasn't in it.  For some reason I felt sure she had signed on for the reboot.  And because of a Spectrum issue, I stopped watching the original series at the beginning of the fifth season, and I really thought Fran and Mark got back together eventually.  So when he walked in with his new wife, I was very taken aback.

I agree. On top of that, I should add that I know a lot of people who were born and raised in different cities/towns in North Carolina and lived their entire lives there but have little to no accent. One woman I know who has lived near Raleigh her entire life has no accent and the only indication that she is southern is that she says y'all. Same goes for a guy I knew who grew up in Asheville - no accent at all (and he never says y'all).

I agree.  I lived in the South for many years and rarely heard southern accents.  I find it bizarre that people expect everybody who lives in the south to speak with a drawl or a twang.  Other than y'all (which I also say), the other common verbal indication that a person was raised in the south is the tendency to say "Yes/no mam/sir".  I love that charming display of respect/manners.

My favorite thing about this show, by far, is the relationship between Wade and his daughters... and this episode didn't disappoint in that regard.

Also, it was nice to see the actress who played Laurie in the television version of About a Boy, and I liked both the conflict and the resolution in that storyline.

Are sullen teenage boys even more sullen and antisocial in the age of smart phone addiction?  Lane was probably very realistic, unfortunately.

    Good episode.

  10. Eh.  There are hundreds of television channels and tons of other platforms, so it doesn't bother me if one wants to cater to Christians.  And It's fine by me if Christians like to watch and read things that reflect their culture and values.  I buy a lot of Kindle books and there's a huge market for Christian fiction.  It's not my cup of tea, but that's what a particular group enjoys... so I'm not going to get upset over it.  They are allowed to have their views and preferences too, in my opinion.

  11. I just watched my old recording (from last year) of Naughty or Nice.  I love everything about that movie, and have watched it several times.  It was my original gateway Christmas movie - the reason I started watching tons of Hallmark Christmas movies two years ago.  Hillary Burton shines as Krissy Kringle (and no, she's not Santa's daughter... just unfortunately named,) who is going through a rough patch in her life, and Gabriel Tigerman is perfect as her hilarious new friend Marco.

It's being broadcast Wednesday morning at 2:09 a.m. Eastern... so if anybody here has never seen it (or would like to catch it again)... set your DVR. :)

Lots of nostalgia in this episode.  I really love this show.  Why aren't there more shows like this that are that good?  They cancelled "The Kids are Alright" which was a great show so I am very grateful for this one.

I still miss that show so much!  And even though it was on ABC, I think CBS was foolish for not picking it up when it was cancelled.  The Kids are Alright was critically acclaimed and had ratings that were better than some of CBS's current shows (including Carol's Second Act that's on Thursday nights).

I think it would have been terrific following Young Sheldon.  They both are/were sweet and funny/hilarious, nostalgic shows, set in another era, with voice-over narration by one of the grown-up children, and they were both perfectly cast with young actors that are wonderful in their roles.  (The adult casting was fantastic also.)  Such a missed opportunity!

I'm going to respond here because this is a general complaint about the Hallmark movies and not holiday-specific. I agree that it's frustrating seeing these characters in huge, beautiful houses all the time. I think I've read that the people behind Hallmark think their viewers want that sort of wish fulfillment. I guess that might be true with some people, but I'd enjoy these movies more if some of the characters had somewhat more relatable lives. The romantic stories are enough wish fulfillment on their own, let these people live in apartments/condos/small homes.

I agree.  I love seeing beautiful homes, but I prefer them to be more modest and realistic.  In other words, less over-the-top materialism and more simple, warm, cozy, not-so-big homes that are beautifully finished and decorated.  (And that you can believe the owners actually might be able to afford in real life.)

Kind of like Kate Winslet's character's cottage in The Holiday, versus Cameron Diaz's character's home in that same movie - which, if it was a Hallmark movie, would be owned by the lady who owns the local bakery, or the part-time jewelry maker.  😄

Watching An Angel In The Family.  When did Hallmark stop making this type of Christmas movie, the kind that at least gives an illusion of reality?  That one seems positively gritty next to the synthetic, overly corporate, Twilight Zone-ish, pod-people output their company cranks out now.

Thanks for mentioning that!  I've never seen it, but it looks like a gem, and I have it set to record this Friday morning. (It's being shown on HM&M.)

When I was growing up, we sat reverently while in church as we listened to our pastor.  No one ever raised their hand and interrupted a service in order to ask a question!  However, the pastor was always available to meet with you privately for any type of discussion you might have.  Mary should lay down the law and not allow Sheldon to interrupt a service, but schedule some one on one time with Pastor Jeff at a later time.  It is very rude to disrupt a service.

Maybe it's different now with the contemporary type services, but on this show, this is a more traditional type of service and if one disagrees so much with the pastor, then they shouldn't be there.  Go find something else that suits your beliefs.  Of course with Sheldon, he doesn't believe any of it, and just goes in support of his Mom.  Still, he really needs to learn that he's not the only one in the room and that he needs to show respect for Pastor Jeff by keeping his big mouth shut!

Well, in the third episode of the series, Sheldon raised his hand and made a comment, and Mary scolded him and apologized to the pastor... but the pastor said it was fine and invited Sheldon up to the front to discuss his sermon... he's probably regretted encouraging him ever since.  😉

I can't find any cut off date.  I found a couple like this but it only addresses the start of the original series.  The new reboot starts November 20, maybe that's what you are thinking of.

Thank you for that - I had forgotten when the new episodes were supposed to start.  They're going to release all of them at once, right?

I actually just tried the new box with the new firmware, and the episodes are not locked on that device.  (I should have tried that sooner!)  I will have to call Spectrum and have them fix our DVR.

Thanks again for the help and advice Kohola3 and Ailianna!

Mine did the same thing, but there was a single episode--Paul is Dead, in Season 2, that wasn't locked, and once I played that one, it would keep going into the next episode and the next, even though they were supposedly locked.  It even let me fast forward through ones I didn't want to see and start the next episode after that.  But, yes, I think that it was a poor decision on their part not to keep the entire series available leading up to the new season.  I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the show, especially in the beginning.  This weekend I saw through the first episodes with Mabel, so I was able to use this to see quite a bit of the show.

Thanks for letting me know that.  Although, if I have to go back to season two and FF through all the episodes to where I left off in season five, that will take a lot of time.  (Especially if I have to do that each time I want to watch another few episodes.)

Yes, I may have to do that.  They seemed to disappear around the time we had one of our cable boxes replaced.  The new box has very different firmware and On Demand... so maybe that goofed something up with our DVR.

Does anybody have a link to Spectrum's announcement about the date until which the old episodes would be available?  I thought it was November 30th, but I'm not completely sure.

Yeah I was kind of hoping Doris would do some self reflection and ask her husband to go to counseling or something. I know that's not the comedy route but clearly she took her husband for granted and realizes it too late. It was nice of Katie and Doris to be supportive but they're wrong about her husband needing to love her just the way she is. Nobody has to put up with verbal abuse and Doris is a very abrasive person.

It's been a long-running gag that Cooper seems to think Katie and Greg are his parents. This isn't the first time he's referred to Greg as "Dad." There was an episode last season where Katie had to keep reminding him he wasn't their son. And he would just laugh. Yet in this same episode Cooper said he wished he had parents that would support him or something so he's not completely delusional. He's just very mixed up I guess.

Doris is the worst!  She is such a horrible person that I didn't even feel bad for her.  Actually, Richard is also a horrible person, so they are very well matched.  Honestly, it would probably be better for them to just stay together rather than inflict their horribleness on other people. 😉

About Cooper... I don't think he's delusional.  I think of it this way... There are times kind and generous adults kind of "adopt" (not legally, but otherwise) a kid in need and include them as a member of their family because they desperately need parenting.  Cooper is very aware that he needs parenting and his parents are not up to the task - for all intents and purposes it seems he doesn't even really have parents - so he's "adopted" his best friend's parents as his own.

I think it's sweet and I'm glad Katie and Greg are able to provide a lot of what he needs, that he should have gotten from his own parents.  (Plus Cooper gets to experience what reality is like for people who aren't super-rich, which is a big bonus.)

I skipped that one when it first came out because I was disappointed that none of the actors from the first two were going to be in it. Maybe I’ll give it a try now. Lifetime is airing The Christmas Shoes and Hallmark Drama is airing The Christmas Blessing this year so I might record all three and watch them in order.

I’m pretty sure it was a Lifetime movie. The first two were on CBS.

Thanks for mentioning that.  While I was watching The Christmas Hope, I didn't realize it was a sequel.  The Christmas Shoes is on Lifetime this afternoon (4:00pm Eastern) and I am recording it.

My cable provider doesn't include Hallmark Drama, so I guess I won't be able to see The Christmas Blessing. 😞  Oh well.  It would have been nice to see the entire series.

  23. I watched a dramatic Christmas movie last night that I recorded on Lifetime.  It is ten years old, but was very good!  It's called The Christmas Hope starring Madeleine Stowe and James Remar as a couple who are somewhat estranged due to the loss of their son two years earlier, and they take a newly orphaned young girl into their home for Christmas. Has anybody here seen it?  It was tragic, but very moving, and had a happy ending of course.  I think it may have originally aired on Hallmark back in 2009.
