  1. Did we see her face when she answered Jiffy Pop's question about the bee sting?  'Cause I'm wondering if "Jeff" was added in post-production;  as in, the original quote was, "Where my hand is, dumbass."  That'd give Jeff a reason to think that she "hates" him.

And as far a TWoP'er (PTv'er for that matter,) I'd have to believe that they have edited out more than one, "Shut up, Probst!," during competitions in the history of the show...  So that clue is unlikely tp occur.

  2. If he get's brought to the end as a goat, I hope every episode focuses upon his master plan being foiled.  That'd be the only way I could tolerate his continued presence.

  3. A Balance Beam Challenge?  Gee, who does that favor?  Combined with puzzle pieces?  If those pics show the immunity challenge (rather than a reward challenge,) then put the necklace on Joe/Jenn/Carolyn right now.

And we got shots of Tyler seeming be talking to Joe, hmm.

But the picture that really grabbed my attention was: s30_press_images_ep8_0020.jpg

Doesn't this scream, "too comfortable in their position within the tribe," combined with "not pulling their weight around camp?"  Just like whichever Christie brother got the boot post-merge in BvW II?

  4. I was told on another board that Sierra was enjoying the blindside. They told me it's speculated Sierra might have told Jenn what's up.

This seems "spoiler-ish."  What was the source?  Because the two shots of Sierra during the vote reading seemed to fall into the "concerned" facial expression category, rather than "enjoying."

  5. Unlike normal, I’ve already made a few posts, so this’ll be shorter than usual.  Note that while Jiffy Pop only read eleven of the twelve votes, the one he left out was for Kelly.  Jenn, Hali, Joe, and Shirin know that Will defected.

Hmm, the tribe split was (by majority of factions,) Red vs. Blue, and they had Purple buffs ready to hand out.  Any chance they had prepared twelve Orange and Green buffs just in case?

Murica (I’m going to spell it correctly - Purple)

    1. Mike (1E)  This really feels too high, as I think (hope?,) that chaos will pull the former Escamerans apart.  But he survived the hints of “first boot edit,” and has a redemption arc going that could be interpreted as a “winner’s,” edit.

    2. Carolyn (3N)  Also feels high, but she’s got the HII, and I’m beginning to think she’s becoming the Dawn to Tyler’s Cochran.  (Not that she’s everyone’s friend, and folk will feel betrayed, but that the potential jury pool isn’t likely to like her personally, and be susceptible to a claim from Tyler that he was pulling the strings.)

    3. Rodney (6E)  Big jump, but no one respects him, (or will by the end,) and he’s abrasive.  He’s got a great chance to make the final as a goat.  (I’m also going off of my supposition from earlier in the thread that he’ll end up in the larger suballiance of the existing - by the numbers - large alliance.)

    4. Tyler (5E)  I’m not as strong on edits as I used to be, but he is getting a subtle, and increasing, behind the scenes mastermind play.  The “line in the sand,” talk cements my feeling that the large group of seven will stick together long enough to pick off at least two of Jenn/Joe/Hali.

    5.  Dan (2E)
    6. Sierra (3E)  Getting stung got Dan airtime, and he managed to be dismissive towards women in the process, bonus!, and Sierra was invisible.  Except for her hair - did the merge basket include product?

    7. Will (4N)  I am going to rail against your decision, but I can understand some of the reasons you went the way you did.  You were fourth out of four, and depending upon how you perceived Shirin, maybe even fifth out of five.  The new alliance looks, and according to Rodney sounds, fractured, so you’re not necessarily eighth out of eight of the new group you’re joining.  (And again, according to Rodney, you’re final four.)  While Carolyn and Tyler are being presented as “swing votes,” you are being shown as a flip-flopper.  One of these is better than the other...

    8. Shirin (6N)  You’re not part of the core Red Three, and you have goat potential.

    9. Hali (2N)
    10. Jenn (1N)
    11. Joe (4E)  As a group, you dodged a bullet with a very entertaining idol play, and a timely individual immunity win.  You can’t count on these two factors continuing on in the future.  And, as a group, you’re on the wrong side of a 8-4 vote, results be damned.

OUT  Kelly (5N)  I mentioned it in a previous post, but I think you were viewed as the one Blue player that all the other blues liked.  And you were probably also seen as Carolyn’s link to the five Escamerans, so while the ex-Nagarotes are in a bad place number-wise, getting rid of you was seen as the best way of fracturing the large alliance.

  6. And then there is Shirin. Tyler and Carolyn might be able to play her as a swing vote. Get rid of the three No Color and Shirin becomes a lone wolf. She has more of a relationship with Tyler and Carolyn then she does anyone else. Tyler was not part of the group who voted out Max so he might be able to approach and work with Shirin.

I agree with your entire post, except this.  Last weeks scene of Carolyn telling Shirin that she had blown her chance, (by being a pair with Max, and weird in general,) was - regardless of the actual words used - dismissive, patronizing, and "sucks to be you."  I think the primary value of it as a scene was to establish how/when/why Shirin decided to go whole hog with the Red team; to show why she will staunchly not realign with her former Yellow tribemates.

  7. There was an idol left out there and now Jenn has played her idol, does that mean there are two out there now?

Roidney and Mike are idiots, why aren't they getting votes against them?

Over in the Speculation thread, I predicted that the merged tribe would end up on the old Blue beach, because of the presence of the currently still hidden HII near their water supply.  (That was the only thing I got right in that speculation post.)  Note that this gives a huge advantage to Carolyn, Jenn, and Tyler; Carolyn and Jenn found their tribes HII just by looking around, Tyler as he's actually seen the clue.  This early in the game, I'd almost guarantee that they re-seed Jenn's idol, putting two HII's into play to be found.  Scramble!

I remember her saying that.  I feel like these contestants got a completely different side of Kelly than we're seeing.  She looked like a clueless little follower of Mike's, but maybe she was actually active in the game and making decisions.  At any rate, I'm glad she got the boot.  Would have rather it been Mike or Rodney, and I'm wondering if those names even came up.  But for Carolyn to trust her, and Jenn to say that, she must have put on a convincing case.  Maybe it would have worked better for her if she played it up that she wasn't swinging right back to her old tribe.  With all the talk about numbers and power couples coming from Mike, you think he'd be the one to get a clue, pretend to separate from his tribe, and extend an olive branch.

I, too, thought that Mike would have been a "better" target for Jenn and Hali.  But, in addition to the players perceiving Kelly as "the glue" holding the former Blues together [and this seems legit, Rodney dislikes Dan, doesn't trust Mike, and has antagonized Sierra; Sierra "hates" Dan and Rodney,] remember that Jenn was on a tribe with Kelly for six days, and even though Kelly voted with Jenn to get rid of Max, Jenn flat out stated that she didn't trust Kelly at all.  This may have been a better play than it appears on the surface.  (When I do my rankings later, I will put the Blues on top and the Reds on the bottom, but I would not be surprised at all if the strong Blue-5 explode.)

  8. Well Crap.  That may have just helped Rodney's grand scheme more than he realizes.  (But first, an aside: Rodney seemed to think that he had Kelly as his strongest original ally, instead of the narrative we've been presented of, that of Mike and Kelly.  Hmm.)

Rodney's master plan (as presented to us, and more importantly, Will,) was for - oh God, I give up, I'll use the damn "collar" designations - the Blue Collars + Will + Carolyn to Pagong off the No Collars.  Then at Seven, Rodney, Kelly, Carolyn, and Will would turn on the remaining members of the tribe.

All Carolyn and Tyler have to do is slip Tyler into Kelly's spot - which means that the "hidden duo" of Carolyn and Tyler have their final four spots,  (And Carolyn doesn't have to try and save Tyler before they get down to Seven.)

  9. For my rankings I pretended that the merge isn’t happening this week.  I’m over that now.  First, a location speculation:  Since they don’t re-seed idols until they are played, the merge camp will be at Escamera beach, as there is still an idol to be found at the old “blue” campsite.  A second speculation, the first immunity challenge will be the “hold a pole,” as shown at CBS.  Hali or Carolyn will win the immunity idol.  (Perhaps Shirin should be included also, as she should know that she needs it.)

I don’t think we’ll see anything close to a straight Pagonging this season, there are too many potential switchers and “lone wolves,” for that to happen.

So, as I said in my ‘rankings’ post in the episode thread, the original Nagarotes are the largest alliance block, though the original Escamerans might appear to be.  (By tribe: Blue (5) Mike, Dan, Kelly, Sierra, and Rodney; Red (4) Joe, Jenn, Hali, and Will; and Yellow (3) Carolyn, Tyler, Shirin.)

In terms of what I see are the current alliances:

NoCollar4: Joe, Jenn, Hali, and Will.  Will has potential to switch out, but I don’t think he’d do it in order to become the least valuable person in his new alliance.  (I.e., if Mike approaches him to switch, he probably wouldn’t.)  but, I could see Will approaching a group of “outcasts” loosely associated within or without of his alliance to ‘switch things up.’  [say, for example, Will, Carolyn, Tyler, Sierra, and/or Shirin.]

BluCollar3: Mike, Kelly, and Dan.  Mike and Kelly have appeared to keep their alliance quiet, and I think that, after Rodney has his Roidney Rage moment after tribal, that Mike may be able to reel him back into the fold.  But, I’m not sure enough of that to include him in this group.

Carolyn and Tyler:  These two have great stealth couple potential, especially since the only person who could really sound the drums against them (Shirin,) would be in a Cassandra position with regards to her warnings.  I can also see Tyler managing to “mend” things with Joe, even with his vote against him, as both seem to be rational players.

And the three “lone wolves”: Shirin, who has apparently annoyed everyone but the BluCollar3.  (Now that she knows she’s annoying, thanks to Carolyn and Hali, she possibly could make inroads with them.)  Sierra, who is currently aligned with one person she hates (Dan,) and potentially, if Mike does what I think he’ll try to do, two (Rodney.)  And Rodney, who depending upon how hard he blows up, will either be alienated from everyone, or reabsorbed into the Escamera fold.

So which combination makes the most sense to get to seven for the first vote?  [in reality I’m hoping for a complete clusterf* of a vote where there isn’t a group of seven, and we see multiple votes going to three players.]  I’m willing to guess that the Nagarotes are going to proclaim the (five) Escamerans as the big threat post merge, while the “Blue Collars” will claim that they are, at best, a fractured group, and the “tight” four “No Collars” are the true threat.

What follows is my best guess as what rational self-interest should lead folk to do.  It may also be considered fan-fiction, so take the rest at whatever value you’d like.

I think Sierra will join the Nagarotes.  She decided to save Joe, they were shown being social, and she probably has more in common with Jenn and Hali (on the surface,) than anyone else left.  Even though Tyler went against Joe in the last vote, he also went against Mike and Dan.  Carolyn is the true wild card, bringing Tyler with her most likely, and she did get to go on the bonding reward with Jenn and Hali.  That’s seven, that’s enough, and they might even be able to draw Shirin in as well.

Who do they target?  (“Edit” talk ahead!)  The head of the snake, of course.  Who decapitated a scorpion and ate it?  Who killed, and seemed to relish eating, a snake?  Who has been receiving a redemption edit that many are calling a “Winner’s Edit?  [And note, if we look to recent history, a “First Boot after the Merge,” edit looks a LOT like a “Winner’s Edit.”]  Why that would be Mike of course.  The ‘leader’ of the opposing alliance, who is also a “physical” immunity threat; who is also unlikely to win the first,  “hold the pole,” immunity challenge.

So my best guess at the post-merge rankings?

    1. Jenn, 2. Joe, 3.Hali, 4. Carolyn (HII,) 5. Sierra, 6. Will, 7. Tyler, 8. Shirin (Goat,) 9. Rodney (Goat,) 10. Kelly, 11. Dan, and 12. Mike

  10. Well that was a great episode, the only way it could have been improved was if the other douchetasic bro had gone instead.  I’m not a conspiracy person, so I enjoyed the “coincidence” of the immunity challenge being one that required (virtually) no physical ability.  (And nuNagarote still needed nuEscameca to throw it, bwah ha ha!)

    nuNagarote (Red)

I was surprised to find myself as happy as I was to see them win the reward challenge.  I suppose there probably was a bit of, “which tribe is really going to appreciate this more,” going on.  They all seemed to enjoy their turtle time, and Shirin seemed to dial it down considerably; but if they had gone to tribal I have no doubt Shirin would have gone home.

Carolyn horribly misplayed her post-tribal conversation with Shirin, and Hali did very well with hers.  If she was getting significant airtime, I’d think that Hali was trying to cultivate her own group of outsiders.  (Much like whatever Tyler’s quote was last week alluded.)  But with so little political time shown of this group, there are no changes to the rankings.

    1. Jenn (1), 2. Hali (2), 3. Carolyn (3), 4. Will (4), 5. Kelly (5), and

    6. Shirin (6)  One comment on Shirin, she really seemed to be more integrated with the tribe after her conversation with Hali, (and Carolyn as well.)  If she can make it to the merge, perhaps she can keep herself in check, and bond with the four Escamerans she hasn’t had a chance to “annoy” yet.

    nuEscamera (Blue)

Okay, I’ve got to say this early, so I can “get the taste out of my mouth.” : Rodney’s rationale for wanting to throw the challenge (to get rid of Joe,) was reasonable.  Mike’s rationale, to protect Kelly, was even better.  (Also, remember that Joaquin clearly was happy to see Max as the missing piece to the “new Nagarote tribe,” when they arrived at the reward challenge.  If Carolyn was the player who joined the “old” Nagarote’s, then perhaps Kelly was in trouble. (Though we know better here at home.))

And while I enjoyed, for my own viewing pleasure, Mike and Dan turning the vote around, I’ve got to think that Mike made a mistake.  Not for the “wrath of Rodney,” nor for the danger of the brodouchemance strong couple, but because if Joe can rejoin his old tribemates, that group of four is the largest “alliance” left.

[The NoCollar 4, Mike/Kelly/Dan, Carolyn&Tyler, and three free agents: Rodney, Sierra, and Shirin.  If there isn’t a merge at twelve, note that each of the currently existing tribes has an obvious boot from amongst the “free agents,” Rodney and Shirin.]

    1. Mike (7)  I thought Sierra would switch, and didn’t realize that the douche-duo would ignore/ ostracize Joe.  Instead, you played a great game of “splitting up the power couples,” while continuing to hide (and protect,) your own.  You do need to not let Dan talk to Sierra, though.

    2. Dan (5)
    3. Sierra (3)  It isn’t often a swing vote chooses a side, and isn’t perceived as #n/n in the new alliance structure.  Well played - even if you were “voting with your heart, not your head.”
    4. Joe (4)  Keep your head low, keep up the soft-sell towards Sierra, and hope for a merge soon.

    5. Tyler (1)  You were oddly invisible this episode, but the editors had to tell the tragic love story of Rodney and Joaquin, so that is mildly understandable.  Play hard against Rodney, and try to make inroads with Joe.

    6. Rodney (6)  The greatest schadenfreude for me was watching you proclaim how you had Joaquin wrapped around your finger, when it seemed pretty obvious who was more attached to whom.  Note that, if you survive to the merge, you are either an early “quality of life,” boot, or a really strong chance to make it to the end as a goat.  (Ox?  Maybe?)

OUT  Joaquin (2)  Mike outplayed you, pure and simple.  (Also Joe, who was shown hanging out with Sierra, whose vote he needed; while you were hanging out with Rodney, whose vote you had.)  You also overestimated Rodney’s position amongst his old Escamera tribemates - though I’m sure he told you he was in charge.

  11. I believe that Jacoby and Simmons were tougher on Backpack in the past.  Then they were sucked into the "he's nicer in person vortex," climaxed with his physical appearance on one of their podcasts.  I believe he even performed one of his "toasts" for them.  Much like a serial killing cult leader, the charm was to much for them, and they are incapable of recognizing that he "shed his skin, and swallowed the rat whole," this season with his victim routine.

(You know who was a victim this season Backpack?  Wes.  [because of the ex-isle twist.]  Whom Sarah would have thrown in with Leroy and whatsherface in a heartbeat.  And Wes wouldn't have complained about it.)

  12. Hi.  I'm likely going to be very annoying.

If anyone out there still has a lingering hope that "likely," is still a possibility, listen to the Rob has a Podcast exit interview, and see if you can pinpoint the moment when your dreams are dashed.  Because they will be.

I don't know where his "white collar" marketing job is, but he better put down roots, 'cause any HR department worth its salt will listen to that, get out the big red rubber stamp, and slap a hearty "No F'n Way" on any applications he send their way.

  13. The last two seasons have diminished my belief in the editor's use of obvious edits, at least as far as a "winner's," edit goes.  (Did Natalie have a Million Dollar Quote/ moment at all?)

    However:

    Ms.Blue Jay:

Turtles seem to possess an enviable and god-like resistance to aging, and so they came to symbolize longevity. Their link to heaven and earth made them a natural for use in divination. Turtles are also symbols of immortality and are considered temporary dwelling places for souls making their way through a series of lives on the path to Nirvana. The turtle is considered to be the second incarnation of the powerful god Vishnu in the Hindu religion. After a great flood, which occurs every four billion years and dissolves the earth, Vishnu transforms himself into a great turtle. On his back, he carries a vessel in which the gods and demons mix the elements necessary to re-create the globe. After a thousand years, when the earth has been reborn, the turtle remains in place, and on his back stands a large elephant, which support the planet.

Turtles represent longevity, of course.  A female turtle laying 120 eggs, of which only one survives, narrated by Jenn, seems to point to a very obvious clue.

A "Million Dollar Quote," isn't always about money, and isn't even necessarily a quote, [standing alone, majestically, on a mountaintop; or giving a confessional from an ocean rock throne (that looked as comfortable as the Iron Throne, and wasn't used for any other confessionals that season.)  I think Jenn has been getting a Narrator's edit so far this season, but now ...

  14. Otherwise, no need to announce it - I don't need that mental image.  Plus, I may wonder if they are just saying they are going to go poop so they can spend time alone looking for an idol.

But see, this is the reason you announce.  Rob M. has stated that claiming he had terrible diarrhea is what gave him the "alone time" he needed to go idol hunting.  Not everyone can wait until their tribe wins the chicken challenge and claim semi-vegetarianism as their excuse to go hunting.

Spoilered for folks who don't need more scatological talk - no actual spoilers within:

From what I've been reading, most people are pooping in the ocean, which, yuck; so if someone announce they're going off to relieve themselves, and they head towards the well/ water supply ...

  15. I'm not worried about the woman of  higher standards who Rodney marries, because I have a sure feeling that his better half is going to be someone exactly like the vulgar, racist, prone to using words incorrectly,  Joisey girl -- Gina Marie of Big Brother 15.

  16. I hate what the challenge has become. Fail at a logic mission, dah well, 30 minute time limit.  Fail at skill (throwing the rocks in the bucket) hey that's ok too, 30 minute time limit. Suck at drinking disgusting, probably rotting liquid? OH NO! You have quit the game!

It's bullshit.  If you can get out of the other challenges by time limit, you should be able to get out of that one too.

That's a really good point. Although even if they had been able to wait it out, I think Jenna would have quit eventually, considering she was petering out pretty early and Jay had to revise his goal from  "winning" to "finishing".

When Sarah was yacking up the caviar, I was thinking they should have just sat and waited their time out. Even if Leroy and Theresa had come in and sunk all their rocks immediately, I don't think they would have gotten more than a 10 min head start on the next leg, and Sarah may have been able to bike and run faster if she weren't dealing with an upset stomach and constant vomiting.

Jenna hit the lottery.  There is no way she finishes if Jay manages to down the swill.  (And at least one tube of caviar at the rocks.  I have to wonder if Jay had finished the mandatory glass that the 30 minute timer would have started.)  Instead she gets to lord it over Jay for his quitting.  (Schadenfreude department:  Wait until BotE:3, and the Zachole gets paired with Jenna.  It would almost be worth it to see them make it to the final, just for him to have to deal with it.  Then again, he'd probably just shove her forward, pick her up, and shove her forward again.  So. ... No.)

I was rooting for Sarah, and I was pissed when Teeg said they'd get a five minute head start.  They dominated day one, and didn't even get the equivalent of a time penalty.  If they are told which tasks have a time limit, and the Day One advantage is so minuscule, then game the freaking system!

And I didn't understand the overnight rule, either you had to stand in the circle all night, or lay in the bed?  You didn't have to do it together?  Was switching allowed?  Regardless, if the reason Leroy couldn't catch Sarah and Jordan was because he was too tired after staying up all night standing by the fire: then, damn brother, you cost yourself first place.

  17. This is always my least favorite ranking to do.  I assume that they merge will happen at twelve, (no spoilers, just an assumption,) so if I put a ton of work into ranking the tribes - it’s all going to get reshuffled anyhow.  Plus, we’ve only had one hour to see the “new” tribal dynamics, and they were focused primarily on nuNagarote because of their trip to tribal.  (If there had only been the one episode, it would have been my second-least favorite, as the previews would have revealed the tribe swap.)

Best episode ever?  Of the best season ever?  At best one out of two, Jiffy Pop.

When they last did this challenge (BBB, if I recall,) they didn’t have the safety problem that happened this time - I don’t remember any of the callers back then yelling out, “Drop it!,” during the platform lowering back then, but I definitely heard it this time.  Production should have halted the competition, and told them that the platforms had to be lowered all the way down, or the offending tribe would be disqualified.  Sure, the conk and blood was “interesting” TV, but a lawsuit would chill that thrill.  (And yes, I know they sign waivers and disclaimers, but I’m pretty sure that “callous indifference” would negate those clauses, and that’d be my argument.)

    nuEscameca (Blue)

I’m going to assume that Tyler has the most sense on this tribe for the purposes of ranking.  The potential split of Team Sexist vs. Joaquin/Joe/Tyler with Sierra siding with the latter seems to fit Tyler’s self interest; but the Bro-douche-mance hinted at in the previews could screw that up.  Let’s say that the RodJo love fest happens before the first challenge.  When Tyler sees that Max has been eliminated, the logical thought is that Kelly (Blue) teamed up with the Nagarotes (Red) to get rid of the “strongest” Masaya (Yellow.)  [Even though I would have said Carolyn was the best challenge player of the three Masaya’s to choose from...]  Given that, he should jump on Sierra’s offer, and Joe should go along.  (The current old tribe split is 5/4/4, getting rid of Dan/ Mike/ Rodney would make it 4/4/4 - I don’t know if that favors Tyler, (and Jo,)  but it sure helps Joe.

    1. Tyler (3M)
    2. Joaquin (4M)
    3. Sierra (2E)  I’ll talk about it more in the Lindsey postscript, but boy, I had the dynamics of the old Escameca wrong.  But here, she’s probably perceived as less of a threat, immunity and likeability than ...
    4. Joe (1N)
    5. Dan (6E) Not an immunity threat, potential goat.
    6. Rodney (4E) A (perceived) immunity threat, but has goat potential, and - should they go to tribal before the merge, (which: how does that challenge work? Puzzle - physical - puzzle?,) his brodouchemance with Joaquin may save him.
    7. Mike (5E)  Which means the least objectionable, most Survivor savvy of the three Escameca men would be in the most danger.

    nuNagarote (Red)

I am not penalizing Kelly below for her mistakes, but I’ve got to wonder why she went with the men against Lindsey.  My prediction: to avoid the purple rock scenario.  If Team Testosterone was obviously sticking together, I can see why she went with the alternate split of older (+Rodney) versus younger.  (In her mind.  In reality it’s men (+Kelly) vs women.)

    1. Jenn (2N)
    2. Hali (3N)
    3. Carolyn (1M)  Still gets to rank high because of her HII, and she made the better “swing vote” play by aggressively throwing Max and Shirin under the bus - after they had a chance to show how utterly annoying they were.  Carolyn’s only alliance is with Tyler (she thinks,) and while I think her decision was made for personal reasons, and not strategic, she does have the HII.  In post-merge, post HII-play episodes, I think she’ll still rank highly as she won’t be seen as a threat OR she’ll be viewed as a potential goat.
    4. Will (4N)  A stealth winner, as he won’t be seen as an individual immunity threat.  Will have to be able to present himself as the reason Joe was voted off before the Final Tribal if that set of scenarios is to come to pass.
    5. Kelly (1E)  [Note, if I had done rankings after Lindsey’s boot, Kelly would have been 4E.]  She was too coy with her swing vote, allowing Carolyn to move ahead to the power position.  Even though she sided with the old Nagarote’s, Carolyn’s move made it superfluous.  She is the person most in need of a merge at twelve.
    6. Shirin (5M) You and Max must be terribly annoying.  Carolyn was in an alliance with you, with Tyler as a soft fourth, and she wasted no time in throwing that advantage away.  (According to the edit, you have no way of knowing about Carolyn’s HII, but if she had wanted to pull Kelly over to the three of you, I bet she would have shown it to her, as she did with Tyler.)  If I was dumb enough to bet money on Survivor, I’d bet that you get eliminated next, as I don’t believe the next immunity challenge will favor your tribe.

OUT  Max (2M)  I also have to think that Jenn is assuming that the merge is at twelve, and she wanted you gone over Shirin for individual immunity purposes.

ALSO OUT  Lindsey (3M)  There was no clue, until the hour you were chucked, about the divisions in your tribe.  I obviously had no read on the dynamics - and whether that is good storytelling or bad on the part of the producers is up for debate.  One of the most important Survivor qualities is being able to keep your emotions in check; this was not one of your stronger qualities.

  18. Not surprised that Johnny's true colors are back after he gets thrown into an elimination. Disappointed, but not surprised. I was glad that Jay stood up for himself when Johnny called him an idiot like he and Jenna weren't even there. Johnny was all pouty and mumbly and Jay was articulate and direct. Such a pretentious, entitled, disrespectful P.O.S. He really just makes himself look bad.

I had almost "come around," on Backpack; the constant refrain from the people who, you know, actually know him, that he is the bestest person ever outside the game; the, believable, assertion that he is essentially playing a character on the show; but the last two episodes have helped bring me back to pure dislike of the hypocritical, entitled, asinine little turd.

I may just have to watch the after show to see if he's still carping about being "stabbed in the back," by his "long time friend and ally."  (I'm sure he is.)  He egged on Nia into going over the top - which almost caused his "long time friend and ally," Leroy to be sent home because of the lack of a partner.  And his "fun sponge," routine was designed to isolate and emotionally weaken Sarah.

A total and complete jackass who will do anything to win and piss and moan to the high heavens if anyone else tries their best.

  19. This seems like a good time for me to chime in and defend why I have an "invisible" player ranked #1 on her tribe, but first!:

Why are we referring to Kelly as the invisible one?  (The Name Curse, I get it.)  Kelly has had at least two talking heads, Sierra has had none that I can recall.  Sierra did get extra screen time as the basketball shot maker in one challenge, and she manages to be in a lot of scenes that feature Lindsey running her mouth, with Sierra as a sidekick appendage.  (Who may throw in a word here or there.)

Aside number two:  Scenario One: <radio squack> "Car # whatever, we have a 911 call of a fight at Joe's roadhouse, ...," versus Scenario Two: <radio squack> "Car # whatever, some of the boys from the mill are punching and wrestling at Joe's roadhouse, ..."  I don't know where Kelly works as a state trooper, but the way she talked about not rushing in, sounded a lot more like the second situation than the first.  [Heck, change it to "the guys fresh of the rig," and we're talking about Oil Coast Mike's peeps, right?]

So getting on topic, first, tribal dynamics.  Escameca was split 50/50 with a potential young/old dynamic.  Kelly's talking head in the premiere boiled down to a negative assessment of how Dan was interacting with the younger folk on the tribe.  (Which, when you find out she planned on starting out, at least, on staying under the radar, really reinforces her strategy.)

While Kelly isn't directly in a lot of shots, she is in the background most of the time.  She's paying attention to what is going on, and it looks like she is, at the least, "working."  (Keeping her in Mike's good graces.)  Reinforced by her talking head this episode, which was easily perceived poorly, (or just stated poorly by her,) but which amounted to, "don't make hasty decisions, gather the facts you need and act accordingly."

We haven't seen any alliance talk on Escameca, we've just been treated to Lindsey vs. Dan, Rodney vs. Mike, and Lindsey vs. Mike.  I've been assuming, and I don't think I'm alone, that had they gone to Tribal in the first three episodes that Dan would have gone home in a 4-2 vote.  (Or Mike in a 4-2 after the last episode, perhaps.)  Not that there is a "Young Person's Alliance," with Kelly as a fourth, or a "Women's Alliance," with Rodney as the fourth*, but in either case, I think Kelly is in great shape to make it to the merge - which is how I do the rankings pre-merge.

*And this is what I'm hoping for - that Kelly and Sierra are trying to keep Lindsey, and Rodney, in check, both for post merge numbers, and as potential goats.  But that's just me hoping for a stealth mastermind to appear.

  20.  Kelly survives intact by adopting the ultimate Survivor camoflage, the name Kelly, which renders you invisible.

Bwah - ha - ha!  It's only the third episode, and BvWII taught us not to pay as much attention to "edits" as we were able to do in the past, but she needs to start getting screen time soon, or I'm going to have to stop really rooting for her.  The talking head last episode was a good sign though.

  21. I am just going to quote myself from the Episode thread, because I want to say it again:

    4. Rodney (4) There were times I just wanted to reach through my television and slap the snot out this human turd.  He manages to hit every negative “Masshole” stereotype possible.  Especially the, “can dish it out, but can’t take it,” one.  (Also known as the terror of the pack who will piss himself if caught alone.)

  22. Poor episode, I probably was, at best, paying 80% attention.  Forgive me if I misstate anything.

    Masaya (Yellow)

Again, no changes to the rankings.  Didn’t Carolyn tell Max about the idol also?  [Twenty-odd minutes wasted on cbs.com later.]  Nope, not that was shown in episode one.  Tyler made a fantastic move by going out and “looking” for the idol.  And staying close to Joaquin.  Conversely, Carolyn messed up big time by not making an effort: someone has to be thinking “Why isn’t she looking?”

Max was kind of invisible this week, and Shirin seemed way too confident in her interaction with Joaquin.  And while he was right to not want to stop looking for the idol, he could have been polite about it, but instead opted for a misogynistic put-down.  I haven’t seen anything to make me think that the Carolyn/ Max/ Shirin alliance is on the rocks - Shirin’s relative weirdness aside - and I think Tyler is making a good move in getting close with Joaquin, just in case they’re together after a tribe swap, or a merge.

    1. Carolyn (1), 2. Max (2), 3. Tyler (3), 4. Joaquin (4), 5. Shirin  (5)

    #FreeKelly, er I mean,

    Escameca (Blue)

Can we go back to this tribe not getting any air time?  Kelly received the only game-play related confessional, (and has Sierra had a confessional this season?,) Sierra was mostly invisible, and everyone else just looked worse for the wear.

    1. Kelly (1)  Staying above the fray.  I hope she is cementing a relationship with Sierra, (and, Lindsey too, I suppose.)

    2. Sierra (2)
    3. Lindsey (3)  Sierra managed to not be offensive.  Lindsey, not so much.  On the other hand, numbers are on their side.

    5. Mike (5)
    6. Dan (6)  If push comes to shove, and they have to go to tribal, I still think they’ll want to keep Mike over Dan for challenges. BUT, if they start thinking, “it’s time for a tribe switch/ merge,” I could see them dropping Mike first.

    Nagarote (Red)

I have a theory ... waits for Buffy: The Musical music to stop playing in my head ... “It could be Bunnies! ... okay, I’m back.  Hali and Jenn told Joe that they were splitting the vote, and he was going to be the one to choose between Will and Nina.  And, golden boy edit aside, he went with penis, because an overweight asthmatic dude who fucked up your voting plans at the last tribal council is a much better choice than a woman who looks to be in great shape.  (And, familiarity with the Deaf community?  Joe completely failed on an opportunity to cultivate a side alliance/ stealth goat.)

This tribe is going to continue to lose immunity until they take pity on them and merge them into the other two tribes.  Unless they throw in a karaoke challenge.  Or maybe the blindfold maze, so they can stash Will as the caller.  [seriously, this was my exact thought process while I was waiting for the previews, at which point: “Oh, man!”]

So, since this was such an obvious boot, there was nothing shown to change this tribes order either.

    1. Joe (1), 2. Jenn (2), 3. Hali (3), 4. Will (5)

BYE Nina (4)  It probably is just the editing, but you weren’t shown trying to make a case against Will until Tribal Council; too little, too late.  I don’t know what you expected from Survivor, but you didn’t seem to make any of the effort needed.  I hope you enjoyed your eight days.

  23. I was going to multiquote, but it would have been ridiculously long.  I have always been neutral/ neutral-like towards Nany in the past, but that gleeful clap and "sucks to suck," comment just moved her into Kenny/Evan/Frank/Zach territory.  Someone else mentioned it, but I'll repeat it: If quitter-hatin' Teej is suggesting, and in an obviously sympathetic voice, that Wes call it a night, then STFU.

Count me among the folk who fist-pumped and yelled "Yes!," at the end of this episode.  Not that it was really a surprise.  The editors have been telegraphing this all season, let alone this episode.  Seriously, I'd (not really) be willing to bet that Sarah has said, "I'm going to be ruthless. / I'll do whatever it takes to get to the final. / I've learned from the best.," in Every. Single. Episode this season.  [8/10 at the LEAST.]

A very happy smile crossed my face when I saw the preview of what the elimination challenge is going to be.  I'm hoping for another Backpack moment of glee - though if it happens to Nany, that'd be okay.

  24. A shame this team's thread is getting so ignored.

To be fair, the editors aren't giving us much to go on.  They're a competent team that isn't winning legs or in a fight to avoid last; they aren't at each others throats or exhibiting ugly American behavior.  They usually get "props" in the episode threads - there just hasn't been a need to deep-delve in the racer threads yet.

(I do like the way you are updating each thread after each episode though.)
