  1. 'Holiday Wars' second season finale was down 4 percent in viewers and 10% in demo from last year's finale (1.17M, 0.29 on 12/22/2019). For the season, it was down just 1% in viewers and 3% demo from 2019.

    FN's newest holiday shows lost viewers again. 'Candyland' has lost 37% in viewers and almost half its demo rating since its premiere, while 'Buddy vs Christmas' has eroded 20 and 25% respectively. Viewers chose to stick to the more established shows as both 'Holiday Baking Championship' and 'Christmas Cookie Challenge' were up from the previous week.

  2. Halfway into its run, 'Candyland' lost viewers for the third week in a row. It has lost 25% in viewers and 40% in demo: so far, its the lowest rated Sunday 9P game show for the year. Since week 2, viewers who watch 'Holiday Wars' haven't stick around for 'Candyland'; similarly, 'Candyland' viewers don't stick around for the Duff-less 'Buddy vs Christmas,' which lost 18% in viewers and 20% demo from its premiere. Given that Sunday night is 'Holiday Wars' finale, its most likely that both shows ratings could go up...the question, if they do, is how much.

  3. Saturday's Thanksgiving episode of 'The Kitchen' was the most watched original for this past week and the second highest rated show in demo.

    Episode 2 of 'Candyland' came at #9 for the week: it was down 20 percent in viewers and a huge 28% in demo from its premiere. Clearly, FN has to be disappointed with this numbers, as this was the network's final event show of the year.

    Buddy Valastro's latest solo effort premiered basically to the same number of viewers as last year's 'Bake You Rich' (878,000 on 4/15/2019) and the same demo as this year's 'Big Time Bake' (0.20 on 6/8/2020). In the end, those two shows didn't fare well.

Once again, 'Holiday Baking Championship' was FN's most watched show for this past week, as new Sunday night tentpole game show 'Candyland', one of the network's most expensive, elaborated and heavily promoted shows, hosted by a well-known celebrity, premiered to a disappointing seventh place with a little more than a million viewers, with the behind the scenes special that followed as the least watched original.

Monday, 10/26's 2-hour season finale of 'Halloween Baking Championship,' at 1.31 million viewers/0.30 demo rating 18-49, was up 5 percent in viewers and down 9% in demo from last year's finale (1.24M/0.33 on 10/28/2019). For the entire season, viewership stayed even from 2019 at 1.16M while demo went down 17%.

  9. 'Halloween Wars' finale (1.28M/0.32) was up 3 percent in viewers and down 6% demo from last year's finale (1.25M/0.34 on 10/27/2019). Overall, this season (1.07M/0.26) was down 10% in viewers and 18% demo from 2019's (1.20M/0.32). 

    'Outrageous Pumpkins' ended its 4 episode season averaging 820,000/0.20, while the 'Good Eats' Halloween special, flopped this past Thursday with less than 600,000 viewers and the lowest demo rating of all primetime shows and second overall of all originals.

  11. Food Network’s 3rd quarter ended with a 7 percent drop in primetime viewers from the Q2 (784,000 vs 843,000) and 13% in 24hr viewers (474,000 vs 548,000). Counting only original shows, daytime has the most viewers average: 964,000 vs. primetime’s 820,000, while primetime has better demo, 0.21 to 0.16. Daytime lost fewer viewers from last quarter, 7% to primetime’s 9%. In demo, primetime lost 12%  to daytime's 20% with shows like ‘Trisha’s Southern Kitchen’ and ‘Girl Meets Farm’ airing repackaged episodes. 

    Primetime shows that gained the most viewers vs last quarter were: regular episodes of ‘Chopped’ (7.1 million viewers) and ‘Worst Cooks’ (3.9M). Shows that lost the most viewers: ‘GGG: Behind the Games’ (3.3M), regular episodes of ‘GGG’ (2.5M) and ‘Restaurant Impossible’ (2.4M). In daytime, ‘Symon’s Dinners’ (4.9M) and ‘The Kitchen’ (2.6M) gained the most, while ‘Pioneer Woman’ lost 2.9M. Only two shows stayed even in demo from Q2: ‘Worst Cooks’ and ‘Beat Bobby Flay’. The biggest demo losses in primetime were: ‘DDD: Take-Out' (41%), ‘Big Time Bake’ (32%), ‘Amy Schumer Learns to Cook’ (28%) and ‘DDD’ (24%). In daytime, ‘The Kitchen’ (27%) and ‘Pioneer Woman’ (26%), lost the most.

  13. This past Monday 9/21, 'Halloween Baking Championship's second episode (1.20M/0.27) recovered quite nicely from its premiere, up 21 percent in viewers and down 7% in demo. Also recovering from its premiere ratings was 'Halloween Wars', up 20% in viewers and 26% demo; its still down 20% in viewers and 38% demo from last year's second episode of 'Wars' (1.40M, 0.39 on 9/29/2019).

    Meanwhile, 'Outrageous Pumpkins,' a game show based on FN's Halloween specials of the same name, debuted down 9% in viewers and 24% demo from last year's special (974,000/0.29 on 9/29/2019). Finally, 'Chopped: Sweets' ended its season averaging 657,000/0.17. Currently, its the 7th lowest rated new show of the year, below 'Big Time Bake' and slightly above 'Vegas Chef Prizefight'.

It took a week to replace ‘Chopped: Beat Bobby Flay’s as FN’s lowest rated Sunday 9P game show of the year, as surprisingly, ‘Halloween Wars’, one of the network’s tentpoles, premiered to 879,000 viewers/0.20 demo, a huge drop of 37 and 48 percent respectively from last year (1.40M/0.39 on 9/29/2019). ‘Road to Halloween Wars,' another strong performer, took a tumble of 20% in viewers/17% demo. Two years ago, ‘Wars’ premiered to close to 2M viewers and ‘Road’ had 1.6M. This year, ‘Wars’ premiered two weeks earlier than last year, so it’s unclear that viewers aren’t ready yet to watch Halloween shows or this will become a trend, as ‘Wars’ was a show that started strong right from its premiere, instead of one that had to build an audience as it goes along. 

    ‘Halloween Baking Championship,’ now with Carla Hall as host/judge, premiered Monday night down 15% in viewers and a steep 25% demo. Curiously, so far this year, other than Alton Brown’s ‘Worst Cooks’ season in January, the shows with the biggest viewer/demo declines are baking/dessert shows, like ‘Duff Takes the Cake,’ ‘Buddy vs Duff’ and ‘Kids Baking Championship.’ Also, ‘Big Time Bake’ is the 7th lowest rated new show of the year and 'Chopped: Sweets' the 8th. 

    At this point, the 5th lowest rated new show, ‘Amy Schumer Learns to Cook’ ended its season the same way it started: in last place. The show had an average of 607,000 viewers and 0.18 demo. On the other side, reruns of Cooking Channel's 'All-Star Best Thing I Ever Ate' were strong and reliable performers, averaging 819,000/0.19.

It was also down 11 percent in viewers and 15% in demo from the premiere of the first installment of 'Chopped: Beat Bobby Flay' on Thursday, October 20th, 2016 (1.12M/0.34).

  20. ‘Worst Cook’s’ season 20’s finale was up 11 percent in viewers and 3% in demo from last year’s S17 summer finale (1.08M/0.29 on 9/22/2019 with co-host Bobby Flay). Compared to 2019, S20 held up pretty well, down just 1% in viewers and 3% demo. Nonetheless, it’s the show's 3rd least watched non-celebrity season and 5th overall; plus, it was the second lowest demo rated season ever. Alton Brown’s S18 was the worst ever on both counts.

    Viewers prefer Tyler Florence as WCA's co-host, as he has 4 out of the top 10 most watched 'civilian' seasons, being his least watched this year’s celebrity S19; Bobby Flay follows with 3. Robert Irvine has both the second most watched (S2) and the second least watched (S14) seasons. Only Irvine's S2, Flay's S3 and Beau MacMillan's S1 had an average of 2+ million viewers. WCA premiered in 2010 to 4M viewers. Rachael Ray has both the highest rated (S7, fall 2015) and the 2 least watched celebrity seasons (S9 & 11).

  24. 2Q ratings are in and although the 3 most watched shows were daytime's, by a small margin, prime time won on average total viewers, compared to 2019's 2Q. Daytime originals were watched by 65M viewers (among 8 shows), compared to prime time's 107M (among 21 shows). Out of those 107M, more than half are divided among 'Worst Cooks', 'Chopped', 'Beat Bobby Flay' and Guy Fieri, single handily responsible for 28M or 26 percent of prime time viewers. Guy was one of the quarter's big winners: highest demo rated shows with the most growth from 2019, plus the top new show ('DDD: Take-Out'). In daytime, 3 shows get more than 60% of viewers: 'Pioneer Woman', Trisha and 'The Kitchen', which was down in number of viewers due to lots of repackaged shows.

    With lots of prime time/daytime viewers at the hands of a few shows, it meant that many shows were flops or under performed. The top non-franchise new show was 'Symon's Dinners', while 'Chopped: Sweets', 'Bakeaway Camp' and 'Big Time Bake' have been ratings disappointments; 'Duff Takes the Cake', one of last year's 2Q top new shows, had this year's biggest ratings drops. Others, like 'Amy Schumer Learns to Cook', 'Opening Night', 'Summer Rush' and 'Vegas Chef Prizefight' were duds.

    This quarter, only one show surpassed the 2M viewer mark, something that hadn't happened on FN since 2016: the 'In the Kitchen with Joanna Gaines' special so far, its the network's highest rated show of the year. Other celebrity driven specials featuring Questlove and Oprah Winfrey flopped.

  25. Although it was the most watched original this past week, episode 2 of 'Worst Cooks' season 20 with co-host Alex Guarnaschelli, is behind 5 percent in viewers and 12% in demo from Alton Brown's season at this point. Alton's season was 'Worst Cooks' lowest rated ever. We'll see how the current season continues to evolve.

    ‘Duff Takes the Cake’ and ‘Summer Rush’ ended, with FN airing the 3 remaining episodes of ‘Duff Takes the Cake’ straight through with not very good ratings, as well as ‘Summer Rush’. It’s surprising how FOOD didn’t promote ‘Duff Takes the Cake’, given that it was one of their brightest shows last year; now, it's the lowest rated show of the year in demo and the one with the biggest ratings losses. Even more amazing: they kept ‘Summer Rush’ the entire four weeks in the same timeslot, with Discovery giving it heavy promotion on all its networks, knowing that the show was a flop since its premiere.

    In daytime, the premiere of Bobby Flay's produced pilot 'Grill Power' lost 15 percent of 'Pioneer Woman's viewers, contributing to the return of 'The Kitchen' not getting better numbers than usual.
