Based on various cop shows, the, "You've won money!" ploy has been used a lot by law enforcement to trap criminals. Not that this will necessarily be law enforcement, since I don't they're going to start the boys having to run from the authorities again, but if Travis was in this ep, I'd think it was Cole. Otherwise, it could be anyone that is trying to find them that doesn't want to give their identity away.

So, IMO, for Dean to grown, he needs to get back to Job #1 is Saving People. And yes, hunting things typically means killing monsters but he needs to get some perspective back on WHY he does what he does. How can Dean have any freaking joy in life if his missing statement is "killing monsters"? So, if for a few episode, he's a little afraid to just going back to slicing throats and being Stabby McStabberson, I'm okay with it.
Heh, apparently we are brain-sharing SueB, which seems appropriate for Halloween, I guess. I have felt his sense of 'saving people' has been slowly (and sometimes more quickly) eroding for a long time.
And I feel like this is what Cole's main purpose is, to be a mirror for Dean (since they do love their mirrors) to be a catalyst for his introspection on just what does it mean to him now, to be a hunter.
They said before that Dean would have to "relearn" what it means to be a hero. Well, having him learn what it means to be a failure and Deansel in distress is not the way to go because look at the end of this episode he was right back to good old self-loathing Dean.
This is what actually has me somewhat excited for this arc, though, and particularly for how they handled it last ep... because I don't think Dean has ever been able to deal with failure in a way that would let him grow stronger from it. Failure has always meant weakness to him, but there will always be failure. Failure is what drives us forward, but for Dean, his sense of failure (whether real or imagined) has always been what has broken him down. I'd love to see him finally figure out how to deal with failure in a (at lease somewhat) more healthy way, so he can learn how to not lose perspective from it (and go all demon!Dean again).

I'll post more in the episode thread, but I think the short answer is there is some hesitation, alluded to but not directly vocalized, that Dean killing with the Mark of Cain may put him into a tailspin. It's like the elephant in the room that they sort of haven't talked about yet.
That was my sense too, that the moment when Dean kills again will be a significant one, because no one knows what will happen and how/if the MoC will react to that.

The only problem with Angel!Cas is that TPTB apparently can't let him stick around since he can make hunting too easy for Sam and Dean. And since I'd like Cas to stay, I suspect the only way these writers can fathom that happening is if Cas is human.
I want him to stay too (and I'm ecstatic about the contract renewal), but... a depowered angel is still not human. And I didn't like the direction they took 'human' Cas, because I don't think they respected that. I, too, am of the belief that you can't change your species, but Cas dealing with dwindling grace, or having to make choices about how to get powered up, and what the consequences of that might be... that sounds like a totally cool story, so maybe they've brainstormed some better ideas. **fingers and toes and eyes crossed**
I have not been this nervous about a finale (any finale) ever! EEEP!! I think Carver has set up so many different plausible scenarios for how the finale could go that's its almost impossible to really settle on one likely possibility. There are ideas I like better than others, but there's been enough set up for a lot of different things to happen that my brain is just spinning with all the different threads. Thanks a lot, Carver!!

Maybe the intention within the bearer of the Mark is more important than the Mark itself?
Oh, I like that idea. To borrow from Richard Castle, maybe the mark "doesn't change you, it just magnifies who you are".

Maybe third time's the charm. ;-)

peace and self-acceptance.
LOL! I'm not even sure that will happen when the series is done, despite what the song says.
I'd actually love it if he kept the mark into S10, because he kinda sorta was able to control himself under it, but then the question of if he could continue to control it would always be a valid question, and would keep him from just being able to use it whenever he wanted.

I freely admit I'm a bit of a sap when it comes to Dean, I'd love for him to prove (mostly to himself) that he's strong enough not to give into the power lust and lose himself to the Blade the way Cain did (and the way Sam did to the demon blood, and the way Cas did to the Purgatory souls). He's already kind of been there/done that with the souls in Hell, so I really hope we aren't going to repeat that. This time around, I feel like the MoC is kind of like the cave on Dagobah was for Luke... so I'd love for the effects of the MoC storyline to carry into S10 in how it affects Dean’s view of himself (and to have that be just positive enough to break his cycle of self-loathing)… letting him finally at least entertain the idea that he might have the ability to be a good leader, if he can learn to trust himself, and to trust other people (while still maintaining a healthy skepticism). Then we could watch him struggling with that idea, which I think would be a pretty tough struggle for him.

I may be the only person not anxious for his eyes to turn black in the finale.
Not the only person! I understand the threat of that needs to be there for 'drama' (and I do absolutely think it's good drama), but they've also made such a big deal about having choices, so I would feel so let down if Dean actually turned. Of all of them, I think Dean has the most potential to be able to recognize that chasing the power is not the way to truly win in the end.
And yeah, after that last ep (and especially that stuff with Gavin) I was thinking the cliffhanger might be related to something more global rather than something specific with any of the characters. So many possibilities!!

Ah, essentially taking his old job back! And with Chuck off on his walkabout, Metatron believes he should become the one to tell the story, not just record it. Interesting!
-
Possessing someone without consent would probably end up in his skill set if TPTB wanted him to.
LOL, true... especially since Metatron fancies himself The Writer/God. But he'd also just need a suitable "bargaining chip" to get Cas to say yes. Dean may currently be pretty invincible, even for Metatron, but Sam wouldn't be. So I could see Cas, especially if his angel mojo is waning, to be vulnerable to that kind of threat. Especially if he thought his sacrifice might somehow eventually help stop Metatron.

Oh man, there is definitely a different element to Dean. Even EndVerse!Dean didn't make me this... uncomfortable. Kudos to Jensen's acting.

I agree, I've always felt like either Heaven or Hell being closed would be more of a problem than a solution. It might seem like a good idea on the surface, but that messing with the ecosystem like that would create far more potentially catastrophic problems than it would solve. So in a way, I think they almost have to do it, just to see what the consequences would be. But it would then become the problem to solve, not the solution.
-
I could definitely see Metatron 'hiding' in either Sam or Cas, but what the outcome would be from that... ???? But after last night, I feel like something was just set up for Gavin... maybe he tries to take over from Daddy? He was pretty chuffed about being a "prince".

Tessa looks beautiful, grumpy but beautiful... maybe she can talk some sense into Dean!

Yeah, I've kinda gotten to the point where having a character die on this show doesn't really mean what means to me on other shows... it's kinda more about some sort of transformation now, so I think they could do somehting interesting with that, but the dying part would just be the mechanism, not the important part (yes, I am in denial about any possibility where Cas doesn't come back for real).
Your last one would fit the bill for "excited for S10, never been done on SPN, and the show 'going there'" and I would be so fucking shocked, I'd be catatonic for the summer - so I doubt it's right. :)
IKR? OMG! That would really be the only place they could go where I think I'd actually be shocked (in a good way). And I wouldn't even need for it to be a kiss... If Cas just chose to sacrifice himself for Dean (to thwart whatever suicide-mission situation Dean puts himself in), with Dean realizing everything that means, and realizing that the price for his choice was too high... and to get an overt, verbal declaration from Dean about his romantic feelings, not unlike with Castle when Beckett was shot. But there's still 3 more flipping episodes until we find out what that 'wow' meant! ARGH!

I have to admit, as much as I don't want Dean to ever go full dark/demon either, I could see something along that line being the basis of the cliffhanger. Having it end on the very real possibility that Dean might turn completely... and then when we come back, hopefully having something happen to take the possibility in another direction.
Dean Winchester: aka Squirrel
in Supernatural
Dean hasn't experienced only failure though, but it is definitely what he dwells on, in large part I think, because he's terrified of it, and has never learned how to use it as a tool. There is a quote by Michael Jordan (sorry for the sports reference!):
I don't think Dean has developed this complex because he's failed... everybody fails, failing is part of living and it's a vital part of success. He's developed it, over a very long time, because of fear and I think that's why he lost his way... and became a demon.
