  1. Will & Grace Review: NBC's Revival Is as Funny as You Hoped, Maybe Funnier (from TVLine)

Dare I hope that the revival is as good as this review is suggesting? I am from Australia and things are pretty horrific if you identify as LGBT+ right now, which I do. The government has decided that apparently LGBT+ equality is something that is up for public debate and are running a postal survey asking whether the law should be changed to allow marriage equality. The no vote side are being about as dreadful as you'd expect and I kind of need this revival to be good because this show was such a comfort to me in my late teens and early 20s and I need it to be able to play that role in my life again.

  2. Apart from listening to the entirety of Stevie Nicks and Crowded House's back catalogues on repeat (the world is awful and I need comfort) I have been loving Gang of Youths new album Go Farther in Lightness, it is exquisite. Gang of Youths are an Australian band who released an absolutely brilliant debut, The Positions in 2015, I highly recommend seeking out a song from that album called Radioface. Their sound is indie rock with lots of synths and keyboards. Several of the songs on the new album, in particular the opening track Fear and Trembling have a strong Springsteen influence, but my favourite track on the album, and the one I have listened to the most is a song called Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane.

  3. I find that study really interesting and wonder if anyone has looked into how gender affects taste. I'm 35 and I listen to new stuff all the time. My mum is 61 and still seeks out new stuff. My dad on the other hand has listened seriously to, and become a fan of about three new artists total since 1980, and he was only 26 in 1980. Ask my dad who his favourite artist is and he won't hesitate before telling you it is the Beach Boys. Ask my mum and she'll give you ten artists, The Decemberists will definitely be one. Ask me or my sister and you'll get a list of hundreds.

  4. I went through a phase where I had very little knowledge of anything that was happening in mainstream pop/rock music that laster from the time I was about 22-33 years old. I was primarily interested in what could be classified as indie music (broadly construed) and older stuff (where my tastes are hyper broad) and even bands I liked that got some mainstream attention in the States like Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes got no attention at all in Australia. In about 2015, for whatever reason I started listening to mainstream music again (along with everything else) and found that I really like a lot of current girl pop in ways I haven't since the mid 90s. I think Selena Gomez is fantastic and I like a lot of Ariana Grande too. I enjoy Beyonce and I freaking love Taylor Swift's 1989, Carly Rae Jepsen is awesome too. Other things I am really enjoying include Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, some, but not all One Direction.

As for my odd likes and dislikes, I love bubble tea and plain crackers with nothing on them and fruit in savoury salads and mayonnaise with my bacon and eggs. I hate mushrooms, olives and corn.

Update: I now eat corn in certain circumstances, mostly in Mexican food or in a quiche that my sister eats. I actually love the flavour of corn and have always eaten things like polenta, corn tortillas, corn bread etc. My major issue with corn is the texture. I still can't stand olives (though I love olive oil) and mushrooms, which is both a texture and a smell thing. I go home most summers for at least a few weeks to spend time with my parents and the ducted air-conditioner runs pretty much all the time because it gets hot in regional NSW in the summer, my dad will sometimes cook mushrooms for breakfast and the smell permeates the entire house via the ducting, there is nothing like waking up gagging because the whole house reeks of mushroom. I also strongly dislike hard-boiled eggs and hard-fried eggs though I love scrambled eggs and omelettes and pretty much every other way of preparing eggs. I dislike cream sauces on pasta and adore red sauces.

  6. I got a my second batch of Colourpop lippies in the mail about 10 days ago and again, they are wonderful. The cost-effectiveness of these is extraordinary. I got two of their ultra satin lips,  panda - a deep purply berry and exaggerated - a browny peach. I got an ultra matte lip in Mars - a cool-toned fuchsia (my weakness). I got an ultra metallic lip in flitter, a duochrome pale pink/gold shade. I got two more blotted lips, sucker, an orange with warm, browny undertones and brain-freeze, a cool toned medium pink.

  7. I haven't tried any of the ultra high-end foundations, partly because a mid-range foundation is going to run AU$50 - AU$70 and that is more than expensive enough for me and partly because I have decided to go cruelty-free and most of the ultra high-end brands sell in China which means they are by definition, not cruelty-free.

I have fair, pink undertoned skin (MAC NW13-18) depending on time of year and a some fairly significant rosacea over the nose and milder rosacea over the chin and cheeks and as such have a general preference for full-coverage foundations with matte-natural finishes. My current favorite, which I only have a sample of and am about to run out of if Kat Von D's Lock-it liquid foundation in the shade light 44. I need to start the search for a new concealer for under the eyes as my last tube of Maybelline Instant Age Rewind in fair (purchased pre decision to go cruelty-free) has just run out and the NYX full coverage concealer that I use elsewhere on my face is too thick to make a good under eye concealer.

I will also need a new finishing powder in the next month or so as my present brand, Benefit is not cruelty-free either.

I love this album. And because of it I decided to go see what One Direction was all about. I'm such a fan of them live, I'm more than a little shocked with myself.

I have totally reassessed One Direction since Harry's solo album came out, I thought that my really liking Zyan Malik's Pillow Talk last year was a fluke but no, I just like One Direction. I am seriously considering seeing Harry in concert next year even though tickets for my city have sold out. My parents might be getting a surprise visit around the end of April and to clarify, I am a 35 y/o woman with no children.

As for what I am listening to right now, I have been on a Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks kick for the last two weeks now (I have tickets to see Stevie solo in November and if Fleetwood Mac make it down this way (Australia) again, I am going, hideously expensive ticket prices be damned) and they are pretty much all I have listened to other than the new singles from Neil Finn's upcoming album. Right now this version of Big Love from The Dance is a favourite, you can really hear what an excellent guitarist Lindsey is here:

  9. I wasn't born when Elvis died and I am not a huge fan my any means but it was super interesting to watch the coverage yesterday and see just how big the impact he had on culture was and continues to be. In Australia we have an Elvis festival every summer in this small rural town called Parkes in New South Wales and you can get a special intercity rail service to this event that is Elvis-themed from Sydney about seven hours away.

I think the first really big musician's death I can remember in detail was George Harrison's. Kurt Cobain died when I was 12 and I vaguely remember it but at the time my musical tastes veered distinctly toward pop and he didn't have a big cultural impact on me until a few years later.

When George died it was about midnight, maybe later and I was browsing a soap opera forum (can't remember which one) and the news popped up in the forum. Then my mum came home from work (she is a residential care worker) and I told her and it was sort of odd because we were both giant fans of his music but we both felt a sense of relief more than anything else.

My mum got super pissed off the next day when the Daily Telegraph made their coverage of George's death all about Paul McCartney.

Glen Campbell's death is heartbreaking. As someone who has lost a loved one to Alzheimer's, devastating doesn't even begin to describe its impact on the victims and their families...

    Fuck Alzheimer's.

Whole heartedly agreed on all counts. I hope that Mr. Campbell's death will increase donations to Alzheimer's charities, for whatever reason it is almost an orphan disease in terms of government funding which is complete bullshit considering how common, and how devastating AD is. My mum's family has long history of AD,  my great grandfather was already sick when I was born and died when I was seven and my grandmother developed it in 1998 and died from it in 2012. It's impact on my family has played a significant role in shaping the first three decades of my life.

  12. My take on the animal testing of older ingredients is that many of these ingredients are ubiquitous and were tested decades ago before alternatives to animal testing were developed, thus I have no issue with their use. I also have no issue with buying cruelty free brands that are owned by non cruelty free parent companies.

Basically, if the company is on the Cruelty Free Kitty list it is okay by me.

  13. Just got my first colourpop order in the mail and I am hugely impressed with both the blotted lip formula and the ultra satin formula. Both are extremely light and comfortable to wear. I got the On a Stick, a bright pinky coral in the blotted lip, a formula which is more like a matte transparent stain that a true lipstick. It is gorgeous. In the satin lip I got Alyssa, a your lips but better pinky toned nude. It is also gorgeous. I have no idea how to embed instagram photos here but if you go to my Insta jaclauren782 I am wearing the colors in my shots from today.

Is anyone here a "wash and go" type person?  My hair is constantly in a ponytail (this is what happens when your life basically revolves around work and the gym) and the only time I even use hairspray/styling products is if I'm getting my hair professionally done.  All I own is shampoo and conditioner (and combs/brush/hair ties/clips)...and a hair dryer.  I've bought hair "CC Cream" before, but I don't end up using it...

Pretty much. I will occasionally use a beach waves spray to play up my hair's natural curl. This adds approximately two minutes to my hair routine. I have my hair in a angled bob, longer in the front with a significant undercut (my hair is thick) and I either wear it pinned half up or down.

  15. Brands that do not maintain consistent shade naming/numbering across ranges in foundation. I am looking firmly at you NYX. Vanilla in one range is a light shade w/ yellow undertones and in another range is light-medium w/ peach undertones and don't get me started on the beige shade range. I don't expect uniformity of colour between ranges because of differences in formula, I do expect to be able to pick up a foundation and know roughly what depth of colour and undertone I am getting. NYX is far from the only offender and it is not just drug store brands but they came to mind because I just brought a one of their serum foundations and finding a shade was a nightmare.

  16. The Anastasia subculture palette releases tomorrow 7/25 after the leak debacle a couple of months back and I am so there for it. It is a 'cool-toned' counterpart to the modern renaissance palette and it has some gorgeous yellows, teals, greens, and cooler toned mauves. I have fairly neutral, tending to cool skin and I can wear most of the shades in modern renaissance but the colours in the subculture are for me.

  17. Too Faced have announced their 2017 holiday collection and it insane and insanely expensive. The Chocolate Vault features 3 x full-sized palettes, 2 x mini palettes, three melted chocolate lippies and three chocolate bronzers. It retails for $225 and will be available at toofaced.com October 1st and at Sephora later that month.

And I am really struggling to figure out who this is for. Generally speaking no one needs three shades of bronzer and it is unlikely that anyone really needs, or can use all the chocolate bar palettes. The only thing I can think of doing with it is buying it to divide it up and give as presents and that sort of defeats the purpose. Then again I'm not really into the chocolate series so maybe this is just my personal bias.

General chat for posting news/buzz about new product launches, new brands, collaborations.

KKW Beauty who launched a bestselling contour kit is going to announce some new products soon according to Trendmood. I'm guessing concealers or foundation.

Kat Von D is coming out with new highlighters or a highlighter pallete according to Instagram.

Rihanna's makeup brand Fenty Beauty is coming to Sephora this fall. Rumor has it it's good and on trend.

I'm hoping that we get Fenty Beauty in Australia at either Sephora or Mecca. I'm also hoping that Rhianna will cater more to deep skin tones, I have fair skin (Kat von D's light 44 is my perfect shade match) but many of my friends have deep skin and really struggle to find make up.

Urban Decay's Electric Palette is wonderful.  Supremely pigmented.  I also use some of the blues (mixed with lip balm) to make lip stains.

I got this palette about a month ago and I am in love with it. I also have UD's Full Spectrum (mostly because I got that palette on deep sale at Macy's when I was living in Chicago) and I love mixing shades from both. I haven't tried using it as a lip stain yet but it works great on the cheek and eye. My favourite shades from the palette are Trash, Urban, Savage and Slowburn.

    What does that mean?

Traditionally sitcoms were shot in a multi-camera format, often in front of a studio audience, multi-camera formats, usually employing three cameras are shot almost like scenes from a play, an entire shoot for an episode is usually done in a single evening, because the use of multiple cameras means that multiple angles can be caught simultaneously. Single-camera set ups for sitcoms became de rigour in the mid-2000s, just as W&G was ending. Single-camera set-ups emulate film production in that scenes are shot multiple times from different angles. Because of this shooting takes 5+ days for an 18 minute sitcom episode and thus studio audiences are not  used. The original run of W&G was shot multi-camera in font of an audience, the new run is apparently not going to be.

  21. I loved this movie with the exception of the final fight. The idea that she gets the strength to continue fighting Ares from what is essentially the idea of romantic love for Steve diminishes a lot of the films positive messages about feminism for me, also the fight was just way too long and cookie cutter to hold my interest.

Other than that, it was the female-led superhero movie I've been waiting for.
