The geniuses couldn't get to LAX because of traffic. That was why they were at the diner.

What I don't understand is how the infected vampires are really even an issue. At dusk, go home, lock the doors, close the windows and blinds/drapes/whatever (so you can't be hypnotized), and whatever you do, absolutely do not open the door for anyone after dark. The vampires can't come in unless invited. GO HOME! I'm sorry if you are that stupid to be roaming around after dark with rogue vampires in the area, you deserve to die.
