  1. I have a bad habit of watching shows, with only ~80% of my attention. This episode, I didn't even realize there WERE three older brothers. I just saw Colin (with the ridiculous balcony hair) and Not Colin. Later eps were super confusing, as even once I realized they were two different people, I never did figure out how to reliably tell Anthony from Benedict. Oops.

Aside from that, however, I loved this show and was immediately sucked in. I stayed up all night Friday, because I couldn't make myself turn it off before the end. The brilliant Duke of Hastings casting was a big part of that. That man is utterly delicious.

  2. Unpopular opinion time: I like this version of Nadine (so far) more than the Nadine of the book or the original miniseries. There's a very good looking, powerful, superhumanly charming, MAGICAL man who has appeared to her periodically throughout her life, both in dreams and while she's awake. He's promised to make her his queen once they are together. I don't find it "one dimensional" or unrealistic at all, that she'd be totally ensorcelled.

I do agree with hating the inexplicable relocation of Mother Abigail though. Just one in a series of both bad and completely unnecessary changes they've made to this version.

I do feel a tiny bit sorry for Harold (of all people!) for the changes they made to the trucker scene. In the book, Harold and Frannie were already traveling with Stu and Glen, when they ran into the "zoo keepers." That whole "sit here while I rape your friend or I'll beat you more" thing was pretty on-brand for Harold, but still. He wasn't a big enough schmuck in the book, they had to add stuff? Oy.

(Nothing in spoiler box - I started to box book info, and then realized we aren't doing that in this thread. Couldn't figure out how to delete it!)

  3. So... I don't hate Fessy's decision. Short term, he gets the skull. Long term, he's probably bought himself another season. And since he's not generally very dramatic, that's a big deal. Was it the smartest move, the way it played out? No. But "smart" is not, has never been, and will never be his strong suit.

Also, I'm still in the shallow end of the pool that I jumped into gleefully during BB20. He's hot. Fire hot. It's reality TV, I've got to get my enjoyment somehow, and it's not going to be from these people being spiritual role models. 🤷‍♀️

AND ANOTHER THING! What’s up with these men being so overly dramatic???

Nelson “confronts” Devin because Amber is supposedly crying on his shoulder and then the camera goes to Amber and there are no tears. What is going on?

First Josh with his “Kaycee’s crying in the kitchen 😭” and now Nelson? These people really want their camera time.

Josh is a ridiculous crybaby moron.* But aside from him, I think you answered your own question: camera time.

    * I'm still scarred from BB19.

I think that episode is going to be Whitney considering surgery and ruling it out because she is fabulous and happy being fat.

I agree but if she did get surgery, that doctor should go before a fucking ethics board. She is not even close to ready to pursue it.

So Delores. on her FB, checked into a resort on Feb 29 and MArch 3...same one in St John's. Was that night before and night after charter? If so, the charter was 2 nights. So looks like they get to stay?

I just checked her FB, and the March 3rd post is deleted. So you're probably right. (And an intern at Bravo monitors these boards pretty closely. Hi, intern!)

The jumping around in time is ruining the pacing of the story.  The first time I heard that’s what they were going to do with this miniseries I knew it was going to be a mistake.  Although maybe if you didn’t know the story already, you wouldn’t realize the narrative flow and character arcs you’re missing.

I don't know how much would be "don't know what you're missing," vs how much "don't know wtf is going on." 🙄🙄 It really was a terrible choice to do it this way.

I feel like this adaptation has no urgency. Even the dream sequences are kind of boring. I remember being so creeped out with the first miniseries. I mean, sure, I was only 13 at the time but I was already well versed with Stephen King and actually started reading the book during the miniseries. But with this, not even the captain trips victims seem that freaky.

Yeah, the time-shift is robbing the story of much of its creep-factor. But I felt like this last episode was less-crappy than the ones before it with that, so - hope springs eternal - that improvement will continue.

  9. I just finished ep 3, and it's MUCH better than the first two. Probably because I'm super biased: the structural fuckery was toned way down and it had more ASkars. Amber was given something do do, a nice surprise after her dud intro last week.

    Book stuff:

    Spoiler

I was expecting the last shot to be Harold arriving home, to find Nadine on his doorstep. I wonder if they're going to go full on "everything but" with those two, or tone it down to a platonic homicidal partnership for TV...

  10. I liked this ep even less than the first one. I usually like Amber Heard, but I don't think she's being put to good use here. Larry's story was fine but boring, pretty much how I felt about his book character.

The non linear structure continues to piss me off. It feels very second year film student, complicated for the sake of being complicated. Gee, looks like Larry's in danger, I wonder if he'll die? Oh wait, no, we just saw him arrive in Boulder. 🙄

Book stuff, spoiler flagged just in case:

    Spoiler

The whole point of Rita's suicide, is to make Larry a little less of a self centered shithead. Glad we just saw her strolling through the evening and chugging pills instead...

Lloyd's story was too brief, but semi interesting. Flagg is awesome, and i find myself getting annoyed that I have to wait until the last few minutes to see him.

I'm in this one until it's over, but I see lots of snark in my future.

“Don’t be mean because it doesn’t reflect my feelings.” WTF is that supposed to even mean?? No one’s feelings are valid excepts Whitney’s....6BB62E48-EE96-4586-8F5F-640FF3FDCBD4.thumb.jpeg.e4df87b68060165e1f3a820c26e50641.jpeg

On a scale of one to fucking infinity, how photoshopped is this picture? That barely even looks like her.

I agree. I think the original idea was to have Chase make her choose between him and Buddy.

I was struck in the parking lot scene by Chase’s  barely contained smirk as he sat in his truck. Anyone else notice it?  Maybe it's just my imagination.

I think the smirk was, "This is the last time I'm contractually obligated to see you."

The tunnel scene with Larry Underwood is one of my favorite parts of Stephen’s writing ever and I really hope it is not omitted, because I haven’t read the book since the unabridged paperback was released so don’t remember exactly when in the story it is.

    Spoiler

It's when (and how) he and Rita are leaving NYC - I think it's the Lincoln Tunnel. They'll probably cover Larry's travel to Boulder in the next ep, maybe two, so you should get to see it soon!

My friend group must just be filthier than average.* I didn't even notice all the fucking swear words, until a couple of mentions here.

    * Spoiler alert: that was a humblebrag. We are wayyy above average.

Dear God. I can't believe Julie is now proselytizing. Just so horrible to me, on so many levels. Rude, condescending, tasteless, tactless, etc. I imagine she wouldn't like it if people mailed her books about "How to Spot a Womanizer", "10 Clues Your Husband May Be Cheating", etc. What a (not-so-stealth) bitch. But I guess she has to make use of all those hours she's not on The Talk any more somehow...

    Gold. Pure gold.

Well that was...different. Interesting take on Harold. I don’t remember him being so creepy in the book, just a depressed kid with a crush on his former babysitter who gets seduced by the dark side. A very tragic character.

He's creepy as all get out in the book too. If anything, the tv character is significantly better looking and a little less scary.

I have a feeling this episode should be titled "Whitney Chases Chase."  What kind of "closure" do you need, once a man tells you he's  now in love with another woman who is having his baby? Isn't that a clear enough message that the relationship is over? What's satisfying (or dignified) about hammering on a slammed door?

To be fair, "dignified" has never been Whitney's strong suit. #understatement

So this is perfectly on brand!

Is this going to be available all at once or will episodes drop weekly?  CBS All Access is offering a free week if we can binge the show.  (Anyone know how many hours/episodes there are?)

Unfortunately, one per week, for 10 eps total. (Someone check me on the total?)

On a cheerier note, The Ringer covers the first episode. One of my fave parts is ranking the bottom players, just for this:

Hard to argue with that, right?

Thank you for this. I *cackled* several times, most notably at this: "Without the rampant boozing, The Challenge is just American Ninja Warrior starring people who can’t spell."

    That is GOLD, right there.

I was as already laughing hard when I saw the shoe hit Wes in the face and him fall to the ground.  But I fell off the couch and couldn't breathe when the camera cut to TJ absolutely losing it!

Hell, I like Wes most of the time, and that was still hilarious. TJ's uncontrollable glee was just a bonus.
