  1. Another one that bothers me is when Dorothy thinks Rose whispered that "Clayton is a hobo". There's no way Rose would have said homo, she can barely say 'sex' out loud. She'd have used something less offensive or impolite, maybe homosexual, or gay, or prefers dating men, none of which can be confused with hobo.

  2. Just now, BlancheDevoreaux said:

In the back of our phone book, you could do a sort of reverse look up.  In the front, you could look up numbers by their names but in the back, the phone numbers were listed and you could look up name and address that way.

In that case you have solved the mystery. Or at least what I thought was a mystery. ☺

  3. Blanche tells a story about her controversial date to her prom, explaining that in those days in the South some things were still taboo. Dorothy assumes he was black. The Blanche says: "Benjamin wasn't black. He was from New Jersey. I went to my prom with a Yankee!"

Rose comes out of her room with 2 buckets. Dorothy asks if her roof is leaking too. Rose says:" No, I just finished milking the cows I keep in my closet. I'm sorry, with just 3 hours sleep I can be as bitchy as you."

In one episode, Blanche talks about that being the house where she raised her children, but in another episode she tells about going downstairs to wake the nanny.  I wondered how her children felt when she gave the other women partial title to her home.

In the episode where George's son turns up from Texas, he said that he discovered that his mother was getting child support from the address of Blanche's House. So assuming this son is a similar age to his other kids Blanche and George must have been at this address back then. But that doesn't help explain Blanche going down the stairs to call the governess...

I'm a millienial but old enough to recall being able to find someone's address in the phonebook. :D

I imagine the ad in the paper said "willing to do any job, big or small, $8/h. Dorothy 555-GOLD."

To use a phonebook you'd need the last name, it would be very impractical to look for the number or Dorothy among 400,000 people in Miami...

But I fanwanked this one by assuming the people called the number and another girl gave the address. That's how Toto (just Toto), the Greeks and anyone else knew where to go.

    (overthinking it am I?)

  6. I think they missed a trick by not making Rose's family typical St. Olafians.

As for Blanche's family. Her sister Virginia to whom Blanche was willing to give a kidney, was really nasty at Big Daddy's funeral.

I think the family visit episodes are some of the weakest. Though I liked Rebecca and her baby.

I now the other "girls" hated them but I always loved Rose's St. Olaf stories. Much better than Sophie's "Picture it..." stories.

    Their reactions were priceless, agreed.

The "Picture it" stories are less entertaining, but there are a 2 I love: when Sophia meets Picasso (Dorothy: OK, I'm positive you're lying), and when she meets Charles de Gaulle/Charles the Mole.

Since I'm here letting out years of pent up GG feeling and emotions, I'll just say I don't like uncle Angelo at all.

  8. There is another episode where she says she feels like a lady, and frankly she's fed up with it (or something like that). That fits with Blanche we know. Also in the "I feel like a lady" episode she refers to herself as a tawdry cheap slut. That actually bothers me more. It's almost as bad as that stupid stupid line of Dorothy's in the Moonlight Madness episode, "I do believe in sluts.". Cringe.

  9. Benson is taken hostage almost as often as Jessica Fletcher has a gun pointed at her after the murderer stupidly confesses to her, with the police nearby - maybe Benson can have the police force close by rather than go it alone.

But what's been putting me off for ages already is her annoying whispering. Talk properly, please!

  10. Cheese and crackers Rose? Not eggs geflufen, ham and gunterhagens, pigs and svengebluten?

Mt Losenbaden, like Mt Rashmore but with presidential losers.

Not for you nursery nurse nurse nurse.

There's a bus of Greek sailors asking how many drachmas there are in 8 dollars. (what I don't know is how they knew where she lived, surely her address wasn't in the ad).

    Not now Ma!

    Obstetrician Magician.

Hans Christian Lökerhuven, who wrote the story of Tunder the Mediocre Tiger.

Sperhuven crispies. When your ready to throw up from the stench you know they're ready.

So you're 5 years older, so am I, so is Blanche. So you're a little thicker round the middle, so is Blanche...

  11. And I have noticed that the episodes where Dorothy is addicted to gambling, Rose to pills, Sophia and Blanche fall for the pigeon drop at the mall are very unpopular... But I like them because they make the very valid point that anyone can find themselves in these circumstances. Intelligent, educated, strong women (and men) are likely to be victims of these unfortunate circumstances.

  12. Least liked bits are Sophia's nastiness to Dorothy, really unnecessary. The jacket episode. That episode where Blanche feels "like a lady" - cringe worthy. Kirsten. Obviously the Empty Nest episode. Blanche's dream episode. And when Sophia pretends to be the "spirit" of Charlie.

I do love anything to do with St Olaf, the people, the language, the amazingly ridiculousness of it.
