Outlander got a few shout outs on this week's episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (S3.E7 - Getting Over Jeff):

Paula: My life is chores and working and studying and never having enough time to finish the last season of Outlander.

Paula: Scott has been so pissy lately. Oh, sometimes I wish I could just touch a stone wall and go back to 1743 to be with my other husband, the Scottish warrior.

Paula: Paula: If I could go through a magical stone wall and pick any man in any time period in any universe I would pick Brad Pitt in Thelma & Louise.
    Scott: Strong choice. Me same.

I just watched this morning!  Loved the shout outs!

About the box of jewels and coins.  I remember from the book that Jamie and Jenny and Ian speculated that is was meant for Prince Charlie, but wasn't that just speculation?  I thought they assumed it was meant for him because of the story of the "Silky's Gold."  Later we find that Jocasta actually did have Stuart gold, so I just thought that meant that the box Jamie found was probably something else (and not Stuart gold).

So I'm guessing that I'm completely wrong, but I'm hoping someone might remind me of things I've forgotten.  Do we really know who this treasure (rightfully) belongs to?

I actually assumed the same thing, especially since so much of it was older than he expected it to be.

I sure hope the TV show gives both Willoughby and Margaret a better ending than the books and they run off together. It's much better than him ending up with a pelican and her ending up with the escaped slaves who expect her to participate in ceremonies where she bites off a chicken's head.

Oh god I forgot about that!

I missed Lotte and her wacky Geillis. But when was Benjamin Button published? Took me totally out of the scene, almost like the doctor saying "flop sweat" to Frank.

That prediction that Margaret made could apply to Roger as much as it would to Brianna, right? Margaret mentioned nothing about the Frasers of Lovat.

No I don’t think so.  Roger is descended from Dougal and Geillis and while Geillis did travel backward, Roger descended traditionally from then on.  As far as we know only Brianna fits the prophecy of being born 200 years after conceived.

Yeah I'm worried about that too.  The able seaman with the milky eye is the one who told Captain Leonard that "James Fraser" was really Alexander Malcolm.  I can see Lord John dismissing that as utter nonsense -- the lies of a sailor seeking to ingratiate himself with his captain.  But if Archie Campbell also says he knows Jamie as "Alexander Malcolm" of Edinburgh, that COULD be a problem.  So . . . I speculate that Archie is going to meet an untimely end at the hands of Yi Tien Cho and then he and Margaret are going to run off together and join the Marroon settlement where (as in the book) Margaret's gifts will be appropriately valued and not treated as a parlor trick.

    I could live with that!

Speculation for the Season 3 Finale:

I predict that Governor Gray is going to squash that ungrateful little shit, “Captain” Leonard by informing him that he is QUITE mistaken and that Mr. James Fraser is personally known to him so he can’t possibly be this miscreant, “Alexander Malcolm” that they have mistaken him for.  Please please PLEASE let this happen.  I want to see Lord John go full-on I-am-the-son-of-a-duke-and-a-peer-of-the-realm-who-the-fuck-are-you on that plummy-lipped little wanker.

I would love that too.  I do wonder, though, that the Campbell’s know Claire as Mrs. Malcom and whether that will come into play.

  8. WatchrTina I pretty much agree with your whole post!

Yes thought it was a very solid episode and a good way to burn through material, tie a lot of plot points, and add some new stuff in that actually makes sense.  Well done.  Also the first episode that had held my non book reader husband’s interest in weeks.

Loved how they faded Lotte’s hair color.  Exactly how my red-headed mother’s hair aged.

  9. Overall I thought it was pretty good.  High praise from me considering most of this part of Voyager is up there among my least favorite in all of Outlander.  I laughed when I saw the turtle title card....RIP turtle.  And while the jungle trek went on a bit long, I didn’t think it was overly so.  Loved the wedding, and the turtle soup scene was excellent.  Made me want to send the kids away for the weekend and spend it drunk with my husband!  Lol.

I am probably the only one but I thought the reunion on the beach, complete with running toward each other as the music swells was cheesy as hell.  Sam, (while I do think he is gorgeous) and his over developed pecs didn’t help the harlequin romance feel to it.

I love that they kept some of Claire and Marsali’s conversation.

I am looking forward to the next 2 eps, especially with Lord John and of course Ian. And I’m sure we have a loooong wait, but very excited for season 4!

  10. So I am already thinking about next season and wondering what we will see/how the show will translate. I’m also thinking about the opening credits because I believe they are the most beautiful opening credits of any show.  They took my breath away when I first saw them on season 1 and I love all the changes that are added depending on the season/what is happening.  I wonder if next year we will have some fife and drum interspersed?

As a college freshman both Citibank and MBNA America (I think that’s what it was called) thought that I ABSOLUTELY was a good credit risk.  And when going out with your friends, it’s just so much easier for your friends to give you cash and you just put the whole bill on the card!  And you’ll just take that cash, put it in the bank and then mail a check when you get the bill, right?  Right?!?

A $3000 bill on a $300 limit would say no.

I never noticed Chairy from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse in the basement before.  I love that chair.

I also love Lucky’s splayed out turkey-eating posture on the ottoman.

Yep!  I still have the American Express and Citibank Visa card that I got in college from when they set up tables in the student union.  Amex was awesome because if you applied they gave you 2 round trip air fare for continental  US for only $99 each!  I used mine for spring breaks AND my sister’s (because even thought the ticket was in her name, the airlines didn’t often check ID way back when.

Random Outlander-related thought of the morning:  I sure hope Claire did not take her very nice surgical instruments and remaining penicillin with her on that British Ship. I sure hope she did not take Brianna's photos. Because as we know (and as photos in EW have shown), she's coming off that ship in naught but her shift.  She usually keeps those things in her secret pocket -- or at least she did on her trip through the stones -- but I guess we can fan-wank that she now feels secure enough to leave them tucked away in her cabin.  Uh, but Marsali also lives in that cabin.  Okay now I'll fan-wank that Marsali is too young and inexperienced to spot that Claire's medical tools are anachronistic to the time. And I'll also assume that, as in the book, Brianna's photos are actually carried about on Jamie's person at all times.  Book!Jamie liked taking them out and looking at them from time to time.  It's a shame we don't get the opportunity to see TV!Jamie do the same.

I have stayed away from re-reading voyager while the show is airing because I enjoy the show more if the book isn’t fresh.  But last night I gave in and read some of the ship portion.  Oh how I miss/would love to see show Jamie going through those photos.  And saying more about Brianna than, “you miss her, don’t you?”  Bizarre to me.  I missed his prayers for Claire and the bairne as well.  He just seems so disconnected to Brianna and the passage in the book hammered it home to me again.

As for the medical stuff, I am fan wanking away that they survive.  And if found, they aren’t anachronistic, they are french!  Lol

  13. Toward the end of First Wife, Jenny and Ian gave permission  for Jamie and Claire to  take young Ian off to the coast to the island for the treasure and then on to France to have a bit of parent-sanctioned adventure while they had Jarod help liquidate the treasure.  There was never a plan to return to Lallybroch before heading on (the island is off a remote part of Scotland, not near Lallybroch)  so they assumed he would be gone for quite a while.

  14. Exactly.  I also think the whole thing being so sneaky just made Jamie uncomfortable too.  I would bet that had things been different, and they hadn’t had to leave Scotland, Jamie might have gone to bat for Fergus. But I am also betting it wouldn’t have done much good.

  15. If I remember correctly, Fergus doesn’t have a “real” job, is a French son of a whore and wouldn’t be considered a good match by Laoghaire.  Jamie is shocked by the whole thing because he knew nothing about it before the ship and I think he knew what Loaghaire would think so rather than incur more of her wrath, and hurt her further, he feels like the match isn’t a good idea.  Marsali is also younger in the book.

PS. They're trying so hard to make the two Ardsmuir guys the new Rupert and Angus (especially that first scene on the docks), and that's just never going to happen, so they should give it up. It just makes me sad and miss the old actors more. Give them a new dynamic, don't just go right back to the angry!guy/funny!guy pairing.

And I'll second the question up-thread (or maybe it was in the no book talk thread) that if this one guy has returned from being transported...where's Murtagh??? Can we not just get one line of explanation? (For ex... Claire: Wow, wait, you were transported and now you've returned? [turns to Jamie] I thought you said Murtagh was transported, why isn't he back too? Jamie: Oh, you know Murtagh, he couldn't keep his mouth shut, got himself in trouble, and ended up with another five years indenture as punishment. Claire: Oh, Murtagh, you rascal.)

I may be wrong but I have assumed all along that we will find Murtaugh with Jocasta.  He knows her and after his indenture I assumed he would make his way there.  Not in the Duncan role necessarily but I’m sure there is some role on her land for him.

  17. It’s funny, sometimes, even most of the time,  I think Sam is amazing.  And sometimes....not so much.  And yeah I wince a bit.

I thought this was a really good episode.  I’ve never been a huge fan of the ship portion of voyager but enjoyed it.  Thought the writer did an excellent job, glad to have a new strong writer in the mix.  Does she have any more ep’s this season?  Loved all the intimate moments we finally are getting with Jamie and Claire.   Love Dr Claire and omg I want Claire’s hat!  Her ship-wear is gorgeous.

Love Yi Tien Cho and his story.  The actor is killing that role.  Well done to all involved bringing a controversial character to life.

I speculated about there being new credits and am so happy to see they continue to shake them up.  Can’t wait to see season 4’s!!!!

  18. Rewatching yet again and still chuckling about how very clean Jamie, Claire, and wee Ian are in the opening scene.  Shouldn’t they be at least a little bit dusty after several days on the road?

Also, why have Jenny ask  Claire if she and her american husband had children?  Claire doesn’t lie, but why have the exchange at all?  Seemed unnecessary to me.
