I wasn't necessarily a fan of Todd Grinnell's real life wife showing up to play a love interest. I don't know why, it's just that whenever shows do that, it feels like such a "haha we get it" kind of moment to me.

Usually it is but here I didn't feel like it did.  For one, neither Todd (who I love in this show) or his wife are famous enough for me to associate the two of them together.  Another, I don't recall any nudge nudge/wink wink moments.

I agree with this article that Season 3 was actually sort of an arc for Alex:

I agree.  I thought he had a lot of moments to shine.

There's only so much they dive into about addiction during a 13-episode season, but I felt like they did a good job of building up to the inevitable relapse and showing Schneider trying to start anew. I wish they would have laid off of the reunion with Avery, given his return to sobriety, but again, I'll handwave some things given it's a Netflix comedy.

I liked that the relapse wasn't a long drawn out affair.  (Mostly because I kind of hate addiction storylines).  I think it's more interesting to see him have to start afresh after seeing him comfortable in his sobriety and how drinking led him to stand up to his father.  BTW, I liked the casting of Alan Ruck as his dad.  I couldn't help but think he was playing Cameron Frye's dad.

As for Avery, I too thought that would be too easy and while it was a happy moment, I do think it's going to be a fragile reunion.  But this episode also felt a bit series finale-ish to me.  I don't think they want it to be the  series finale but Netflix has gotten brutal in axing shows it doesn't make it self.  This is from an outside studio. I think that's why we saw Avery show up.

I also think it's why they had Penelope admit to herself that she might not get one great love--she might have many.  Ultimately, she was happy with who and where she is.  I found that refreshing.  Mateo's nice but she wasn't in love.  Max was terrific but they want different things and there was no magical solution to why they broke up in the first place.

I was going to save this series to watch leisurely over the weekend but once I started, I devoured it.  I love it so much.

  2. Matthew Rhys will star in Perry Mason adaptation for HBO:

    Quote

Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, HBO's Perry Mason will follow the character at a time in his life when he is living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator. Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and is suffering the effects of a broken marriage.

Please use this thread to discuss the upcoming series.  For discussion of the CBS show and the later movies, please use the other Perry Mason thread..

  3. There was some interesting new information.   Or at least information that was talked about in the podcast/series but expanded on here.

But overall, as a podcast listener and show watcher, I found it kind of dull and cheesy (hiding Jacquelines gave in shadows and reenactments. )

  4. The reason I started this thread is because the next season could go anywhere.  It will be with different characters but I imagine, based on this season, it will be about real people.  And, I would assume but I could be wrong, that it'll be based on either a podcast or another story that has been documented thoroughly.

The same production company that did Dirty John put out Doctor Death about an incompetent doctor in TX.  It's a very good but scary listen.

Or if they stick with the same author who wrote the original LA Times story and narrated the Dirty John podcast, Christopher Goffard, wrote a story about the lengths a couple went to for "revenge."  It's not gruesome but it's a fascinating read

I also just listened to Teacher's Pet but that's Australian.

Or yes, they could find another con story that I don't know about.

I assumed the producers optioned the rights to the podcast which given that it was peodiced by the LA Times probably didn’t pay the people they interviewed.

True, although I wouldn't be surprised if they paid Debra/family in order to nail down exclusive access to her/her story and any additional information.

  6. There's a new thread called "Dirty Characters In Other Roles."

We've moved much of the Tammy, Tim and Cyrus talk there.  We left some posts that had both on topic and other roles elements but moving forward, please take any discussion about other roles the actors have played to that thread.

WAS it Alan Ruck? I initially thought it was him, but there was no credit for it on his IMDB and there was no credit for the role under the One Show episode page on IMDB either.

    It was.

That scene between his lawyer and Eric Bana's John when he brought up a post-nup and the drop dead gaze John gave him in response was perhaps my favorite moment of the series.  That look and Ruck's reaction.  So chilling.  So good.

I could never relinquish full control to a designer (inside or out) to redo my humble abode.  That's not an insult to any designers out there, but the odds of someone else picking out everything to my taste would be slim, as I assume would be the case for most folks.

And that's not the way most designers work.  I don't think there are many clients who relinquish full control to their designers.  I don't even think that's the case in this show.  My guess is there is a lengthy consultation about the owners' likes and dislikes and may even involve a lot of purchasing that isn't shown on this show.  That's not to say there aren't owners who say "do whatever you want" but that's probably rare.  And people with money to burn when they get tired of their decor.

There is good news and bad news.  The good news, there was wallpaper in this episode that really fit.  The bad news, it was the yellow paper in the dining room that was replaced.  It's not that I didn't like the gray textured paper but it, with the blue paint, just made the otherwise bright room feel dark.  I feel like that paper would have been better in the foyer.

And is it just me, but I feel like all of the big houses seem to have similar dining rooms?  Enter the house, and to the left is a long dining room with a long dining room table.

I did love the orange dining room. It's hard to believe it was $12,000 but I think it's the one room in this series that was just right.  Nice bold color.  Not too much clutter.  And it fit with the rest of the beige house.

  9. If you'd like to speculate about the real people in this show, that belongs in the fact vs. fiction thread and that's where I've moved some posts if you're looking for them. Small Tall is the off topic thread.

  10. I liked the oceanographer's room too.  But what I really loved is how understated her reaction was.  That is me.  I can't remember the last time I was super enthusiastic over something even if I really love something.  It just feels fake whenever I try to do it.

The girl's room was really cute but I do suspect it's not going to be long before she's over it.

I didn't love the color of the upstairs except for the look of the piano.  I preferred the blue. It almost felt like they were determined to do a pink room, especially after the single woman nixed pink a few weeks ago.
