Eliza is on the trail of a fugitive who is charged with murder. She must find him before the police do or risk losing everything.

PBS makes the complete season available on Passport beginning on 1/7 before it airs on PBS. Discussion in this thread may contain plot information pertaining to the episode before it airs on PBS.  Do not use spoiler tags.

Season 4 opens with Eliza having taken over the business of Nash & Sons (not that he has any sons) and things are not going entirely smoothly, although help comes from some familiar sources. Outside of work, her relationship with William (The Duke) builds towards a looming decision that will shape both their lives.

In fact, Eliza teams up with Duke to investigate a burglary in a high-end brothel whose clients include important members of the British government.

What does "creative differences" normally mean? Like, Donovan was unhappy with the way his character was written or something?

It can mean anything.  It can literally mean creative differences or it can be a euphemism for something else.  At the time Chris Noth decided to leave, I think some of the initial departures had some sort of "creative" reason when it was because one hated Noth, another didn't want to film in NYC and then Noth wanted more money.  The truth didn't come out until later.

Had they gone with anyone other than a white male in his late-ish 40s, creative differences might have been easier to buy. But as it is, he sounds too similar to Cosgrove. I find it hard to believe that something they're doing with him is going to be a wide departure from what we had. Maybe we'll know more once we see the character in action.

Wow, this was a grim season. The ending didn't work for me. If Kieran was going to kill anyone, it should have been Bobby, not Ellen. She couldn't help her parentage.

They wanted it to be a crime of "passion" (I don't think that's the right word.)  She was berating him for not knowing and he just wanted to shut her up and ended up killing her.  I don't think people die by suffocation that easily but alas...

One thing I didn't get is how Bobby knew that he was her father?  And I have a hard time believing Emma wouldn't have confronted her mother right away with the weird ish her uncle was saying.

I didn't love the resolution either.  It's not that I hate incest plots but it just seemed too convenient.  It'd be one thing if these two had been super isolated from the rest of the world but it doesn't sound like that was the case.  He had gone away and she was already dating Kieran.  I did guess it has to be either Kieran or Stella since they were the least likely.

Overall, I did like the season, though.  I'd love for Jimmy to guest star again but I was impressed with how they developed the dynamic between Ruth and Tosh.  They had disagreements and butted heads and yet they weren't enemies.  They respected one another's skills and even when Tosh was pulling Ruth off the case, there was a tinge of regret that she felt she had to do it.  If there's another season, I'd like to see these two continue to work together.

Ashley said she only signed for one season so it remains to be seen.

Yes, and she didn't want to do that because she'd either have to leave her family in Shetland while she worked elsewhere for a year or two; or her family would have to move with her, and I don't think her hubby/significant other (are they married?) wants to put his career aside or seek work elsewhere.

From what I recall, he works in IT and helped with a case.  This is how Tosh met him.  And based on how he has taken on caregiving duties, I suspect he works from home and has a lot of flexibility.  The next season could be Tosh returning from working elsewhere for a few years. I think what's holding her back is that there's no guarantee the job would be there for her if she wants to return.

They didn't spend the night at the castle. They spent their nights in separate hotel rooms. They didn't show this in the US version but in the UK version, filmed at the same location, they'd show them coming and going for the day if I remember correctly.

Consistently viewers have expressed wanting a minute or two after the winner is announced to enjoy the moment. Why can they not time this show out better?

    Especially with three hours.

Okay, I am a little irritated that Xochi seemingly got some preferential treatment in her judging.  I'd rather judges scores not count in the finale.

  7. I loved Jason's cat but no famous people.

Alyson might be low balled by the voters but her "good luck" package was perhaps the most star packed.  Although I'd listen to arguments that it was Xochitl's. I just happened to know all of them in Alyson's but didn't know two in Xochi's.

    That's the right final 2.

Damn Jason came from 4th in scores to actually compete for the Mirrorball. Wow

I think votes mean the most in the finale but we never know what the balance is.

This show has weird pacing. I really don’t think they had planned to have 3hrs from the get go.

I read the decision was made around Thanksgiving.  It's why they kept everyone last week.  They knew it'd be tough to fill three hours.

There is still Jason's performance left.  And then they'll probably do the results.

They ALWAYS give 10s on the freestyle.  That was just mean.

They don't always give them but almost always.  Not giving them to Alyson is just wrong.  If part of the season is about growth, she showed the most. She's not like Harry.  She's not terrible. She clearly works hard. Maybe she's not as talented as the others but If the voters decide she deserves the win?   She clearly  So be it.

And I'm especially irritated because Xochitl got 10s on her fox trot but there was a clear mistake that even I saw (and I never see mistakes.)

Her freestyle started strong but I thought it got weird and boring in the middle. No, it was not brave CAI.

  10. As soon as I saw Ariana's outfit, I felt like I was going to be asked "who wore it best" between her read body suit and Julianne's red body suit.  Answer: Julianne.

I wonder if Ariana was injured because yeah, the choreo let her down but her movement didn't feel hard hitting enough or extended enough.

And I like Ariana but I rolled my eyes at her "I can trust a partner again" bit.  A dance partner isn't the same thing as a life partner.  A dance partner isn't going to cheat on you even if he dances with someone else.

How come Mauricio is in every shot?

  11. Sometimes the freestyles can leave me underwhelmed that was the perfect blend of everything I want a freestyle to be.  It showcased his personality but also contained A LOT of dancing.  And it worked really well with the jive dance which they highlighted at the beginning of the episode.  His jive was good but his lindy hop was even better.  Faster, more open and freer.

Aly definitely took advantage of dwts to get in shape, she looks amazing! And so much improvement on the salsa too.

She was probably already in shape; just not hours of dancing a day shape.

Why is ABC promoting a Bravo show? Doesn't NBC own Bravo?

I think this spinoff is a Hulu original.  Bravo, for some reason, passed on it.  And DIsney owns Hulu.

  13. I feel like I have to defend Robin here a bit.

I would never apologize to the person who set up a hit outside of the home where my children were.

I also don't blame her for thinking her mother-in-law was a bit crazy.  The police also ruled it an accident.  The MIL also thought there was an affair which Robin knew to be untrue so she saw no motive.  There might have been one weird moment but It sounds like she saw Jim as Rick's best friend who also became her friend.  Bad judgment?  Perhaps but most of us probably wouldn't think that someone we had no romantic relationship with, who we thought was a player, being willing to kill to create an opportunity for a romantic relationship.

I also don't think she was betraying anyone by thinking of having her new husband adopt her oldest child (other than the fact that he turned out to be a murderer.)  He's the only father figure the child is going to remember and once she had a second child, it makes sense to have him be the legal father of both of the children in case something were to happen to Robin.

So noticing the Press Release Jason is once again going first like they did last time and it feels like they're going to give him a 9 for the Foxtrot.

I don't think the press releases are necessarily dance order. I seem to recall press releases with the dance information but the order wasn't released until after dress rehearsal.

  15. Last night I speculated that they had decided to make the finale a 3 hour finale which is why no one went home. They need content. Today, the cable guide updated to reflect that it's now a 3 hour finale instead of the original 2 hour finale.

An extra long finale isn't something the judges can decide because they don't want to kick someone off.  And it's not something producers can decide either.  That's something ABC programming decides in conjunction with the producers.  And based on things Alfonso said, it definitely did not happen mid-show.

And I'm fine with that.  It does make the finale rather crowded but I am happy for the Top 5 to reach the end.

They've done the "your scores and votes carry over" non-elms before--usually for the "most memorable year" theme or another tearjerker theme.  It's just that they haven't done this for the finale.

Re concerns over self-navigation creating too much of a lag between teams and telegraphing who will be eliminated, I've never seen that as a concern and I doubt Phil does either. Sure, it can be exciting to see who ekes out the win or barely escapes elimination, but that's not the only appeal of TAR. I find the navigation or clue foul-ups to be highly entertaining because that's the realistic nature of doing a race like this. Otherwise, you put them all on a shuttlebus like during Covid, they arrive together, and they might as well be doing the tasks in a Hollywood studio.

I agree.  I love the self-navigation tasks.  I'm less of a fan of the ticket buying because I think it's pretty clear TAR reserves some seats in Flight 1 and some seats in Flight 2.  It feels overly choreographed to me and I'd rather they just stick them on a charter.

But the self-navigation, which requires skill and communication?  Now that I love.

I think it's interesting that they pegged Rob and Corey as the other top team considering they haven't had one first place finish all season. I love them, but I am not sure that they are any more of a threat than AL & Dad, Todd & Ashleigh or the beards on any given challenge.

They've had multiple 2nd and 3rd place finishes.  Their worst finish was 6th--once.  You also had the racers in this episode talk about how Rob and Corey would just sneak up out of nowhere.

If you average the place finishes, Greg and John are the lowest with 3.1 but Corey and Rob are second with an average place finish of 3.4.  The other three teams are over 4.  Joel and Garrett are over 5.  I swear, if they win this, it'll be the biggest shock.  However, statistically (if that's the only thing that mattered), it'd be a Greg & John, Rob & Corey and either Steve & Anna Leigh or Todd & Ashlie finale.  The last two have an average finish of 4.1.

  17. I love a good conspiracy theory but I find it hard to believe that they added an unexpected 5th person to the finale once they realized a "fave" was going home.

I don't think there's anyone they love so much that they'd make a last minute decision like that. Ariana?  She's a Bravolebrity and Bravo is an NBC Universal property, not ABC.  So no, I don't see it.  Alyson? I love her but she's not currently in the zeitgeist.  Jason?  Love him but it's not like he's at Taylor Swift levels of fame.  Xochitl? She probably has a young fan base but they probably watch on TikTok.  They didn't find a way to save Harry and he apparently had a big online fan base too.  Charity? She's part of ABC Reality family so maybe?  But really, she's paired off and The Bachelor/Bachelorette usually doesn't protect their leads once their season is over.

And adding another couple affects the timing of a show that they likely planned out far in advance (4 couples + Mraz performing + Julianne/Alfonso doing something + dance from previous winners).

Alfonso said something about taking over prime time next week.  Currently, dwts is scheduled for its regular 120 minutes with Press Your Luck following it.  But dwts has done rather well in the ratings.  I wouldn't be surprised if we find out Press Your Luck is getting preempted and that they're expanding the finale to 150 or 180 minutes.  A programming decision like that could explain why the choice was made to keep everyone.

I agree, but I think it highly unlikely that there were only the exact number of floats set up as needed for the exact number of competitors. Not saying for sure, but with all those thousands of buoys out there, to have only the exact number would have been very hard on the last team to arrive. There would still be thousands of buoys but only one set of marked ones for the last team to find.

To offer some clarification about Rob and Corey's options, Joel and Garrett are doing recaps of this season on YouTube.  I haven't watched it but I did read that they mentioned that information provided about that task was that if they failed to bring the mussels back, then the only option they have is to switch tasks.

So Rob and Corey's options were to either find the mussels they lost, use their express pass or switch tasks.  Finding another buoy to replace the one they lost wasn't an option.

Do you have any reason to believe there will be more than 12 episodes?

I read somewhere that the finale date is Dec. 20 which would mean 13 episodes.   That's where my spec came from.  But it could also be a 2 part finale.

Here's an article that says there are 13 episodes.  They could be wrong since it's longer than previous seasons.

Rob and Corey have the Express Pass, that puts them in the F3 I bet.

When they got the pass, they were told they needed to use in by the end of the 10th leg and that's the next leg. So they're guaranteed a top 4 as long as they don't forget to use it.

    28 minutes ago, Hera said:

It sounds like Corey and Rob have to use their Express Pass on the next leg if they're going to use it at all. It'll be interesting, because while I'm sure they're hungry for a first place finish, they also seem to be all about enjoying the experiences the race provides. If you use an Express Pass (and especially if you use it before starting a task), you necessarily have to give up one of the experiences the race provides. But maybe the next leg will have an obviously frustrating task that's a no-brainer to skip.

I bet they wouldn't have minded skipping the buoy task but didn't want to waste the pass.

My concern is that in previous legs, using it likely would have given them the win for the leg.

But I think we're due for a mega leg before the finale if I'm adding up the remaining episodes correctly.  If it's next week, that might neutralize the benefits of the pass.
