  1. First thoughts:

Louise looks quite middle aged now, and her moves were on the matronly side.  Kevin looked disappointed, and I’m not surprised.  She should have signed up 10 years ago.

Naga seems engaging and has a good partner - could do well.

Anastacia is the big name this year; I suspect the BBC will want her to stay in a fair while.  I wonder why she did this and not DWTS?

Laura should do well – she looked good in the group dance, and I’m picking her for the final.

Melvin claims to have rhythm, let's see.  I'm thinking a mid-pack finish.

    Greg probably won't be great.

Rinder will be terrible.  Why can't he use his first name here?

HollyoaksHeartthrob Danny is very good looking and will prob do well even if he's rubbish.  Oti got a dud last year, so good for her.  I think he'll be the top male this year, unless one of the others is much better than expected; but I’m predicting a female winner, and possibly an all-female final.

Claudia could be great with her gymnastics background, and she and AJ make a very cute couple.  But will he have enough experience for her to win?

Isn’t Daisy’s father a musician?  She should have some rhythm, and she has Aljaz, so could be a dark horse.

Lesley Joseph and Anton were the most predictable pairing.

Tameka’s a bit irritating, but bearable compared to some previous years' Annoying Contestants.

Sports presenter guy (missed his name) may be OK – seems to have rhythm, could be the male breakout performer.

Ed Balls – first out?  Certainly by far the worst in the group dance.

I suspect Will Young won’t be great, and won’t take criticism well.

  2. She didn't do particularly well in Rio.  The British public will remember her though from the Commonwealth Games of 2014, where she was one of the stars.

Are any of this year's lot "ringers" with stage school/musical theatre backgrounds?

I guess you could say it's the kind of jam where you have to sterilize the jars, process the jam for a specified period of time and make sure you've got a good seal on the jars since the jam has a long shelf life. You can make it with or without pectin and sometimes with low or no sugar

Yes, that's what I was thinking of.

  4. There were some very ambitious gingerbread houses, some of which amazingly didn't fall apart (metaphorically or literally - poor Louise and Val).  The Viennese whirls didn't look too hard to make, though; but I do think having to make their own jam is a step too far (for any bake0.  Does anyone do that IRL?

  5. That green cake looked disgusting.  Some yummy looking cakes though in drizzle and showstopper sections.

I would never think of making a jaffa cake.  That's what Mr Kipling is for.

The orange shaped drizzle cake was a good idea, but executed poorly.

There seemed to be an awful lot of throwing things away and starting over this time.  LOL at Paul saying the cake she wished she had thrown away, would have bounced.

Speaking of crazy, just read that two of the heptatletes(is that even a word?) jumped higher than the winner of the gold today.

    Heptathlete's the word.

To be fair, conditions were better on the heptathlon day, and one of the two (Thiam, the heptathlon champion), is also a specialist high jumper who was entered here for the HJ, just decided not to do it after winning the hep.

It turns out that part of the way they kept costs down, and to pay to remedy the diving pool issues, was to take money that was supposed to be sent to help teams from poorer countries travel to the paralympics.  Now as many as 50 countries may not be able take part.  This is a real scandal imo.

And now, although they've managed to pay the travel grants, the Paralympics as a whole is going to have last minute, and pretty major, budget cuts.

I was so happy for the Brazilian guy who won! That was really exciting to watch and it is always nice when an underdog wins. Especially since the French guy seemed really arrogant.  Also I was watching the CBC and they were really harsh to there athlete that was eliminated early.

Lavillenie's well known as an arrogant jerk who thinks he's better than any of his competitors.  Technically he is, he's a fantastic athlete, WR holder and will probably break it again, but that doesn't make up for the arrogant jerkness.  He does stuff like waiting for everyone else to fail their last height before he even starts.  Occasionally it's come back to bite him, which is always a pleasure.  I dislike him more than any other athlete who isn't a drugs cheat.

  9. Lots of the big Diamond League events (the professional circuit for track and field/athletics) are held in the rain in Europe, so the big names will be used to it, but hurdles, pole vault and discus are the events which can be dangerous in these conditions.  Take a guess as to what is scheduled right now?

Interesting article (http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/hosting-the-olympics-is-a-terrible-investment/), so despite everything Rio actually did a pretty good job of keeping cost overruns down.

  11. Some of the female sprinters (track and field) have gone for some horrible colours of hair dye, I think to match their national colours.  Really awful.  Ta Lou has a stylish cut, and I liked Ecador's Angela Tenorio's headband, but some of the purple/yellow etc hair looks dreadful.

  12. The indoor track is also banked, a bit like the cycling velodrome though not as steeply.  The inside lane is very tight, and that's part of reason 200m was completely dropped from indoor world champs, because the athlete assigned to lane 1 found it too hard to be competitive.  The 400 is run completely different tactically, because they break from lanes halfway through, and there's a significant advantage to being in the lead then, this reqarding the runner who does a fast fast 200 and the hangs on, whereas the outdoor 400 can be won more easily by a more steadily paced runner who comes through in the later stages.  So some people end up as indoor specialists, e.g. the British 400m runner Jamie Baulch was brilliant indoors and won gold, silver and bronze medals at various world indoor champs, but never got a medal as an individual outdoors, although he was good enough to make finals.

There are no 100m (or 100/110hurdles) events indoors, they do a straight 60m instead.  Again, that rewards the fastest starters, and indoor specialists often fail to shine outdoors.

There are often fewer lanes as well, typically six compared to 8 or 9 for an outdoor track, so fewer competitors.

Race walking definitely counts as part of athletics, as do the marathon and cross country; it's really only the US that calls the sport track and field.
