Even maids being with child would be gossiped about. But no one is going to discuss how precisely she became that way. What likely made a bigger impression on Pen was that the daughter of gentleman had become pregnant.  And knowing the mechanics or no, that was shocking.

I think even NOW, some people will be shocked if a teenager from a "good family" gets pregnant.  I mean, we know that it could happen, especially if she's dating, but in the back of our heads, it's like "how can she not have used contraception?"  Or "why didn't he wear a condom?" Or something to that extent.

  2. I'm in my 40s and I haven't found it all that difficult to find clothing that looked good on me.  Maybe it's just my size or my interests.  I've recently become obsessed with Pact's dresses.  Otherwise, I live in the Mom Uniform of a long t-shirt and leggings.  I also like leggings from Miik (a Toronto brand - their sizing can be generous, by the way) and Vancouver's Daub and Design.  Both ship to the US.

I go to Olive Garden when I want a "real eye-talian treat", LOL.  I'm half Italian so I grew up with great Italian food but I love Olive Garden as long as I don't expect it to be like grandma's cooking!  I often think of grandma when I go there.  I know it would have fascinated her no end.  She was always fascinated by "fake-talian" food like Chef Boyardee "spaghetti in a can".  But actually I've had some pretty good entrees at Olive Garden that I'm sure she would have respected.  Coincidentally my husband and I went there today.  We just happened to be in the area and I left it up to him to choose.  I had the lunch chicken parm. entree.  I'll have to go back and have the eggplant next time.

Your grandmother's fascination with "fake Italian" sounds like my interest with North American Chinese food.  Growing up, I always wondered about chicken balls and what non-immigrant Chinese called "egg rolls."  To me, egg rolls were cookies that resembled super-skinny cannoli shells that my family got at the Chinese grocery store.  They came in tins.  And what non-Chinese North Americans called "egg rolls" were super-battered spring rolls that had more sprout filling.  I had only SEEN those and chicken balls until I was a teenager.  Chinese restaurants in Toronto, the ones we went to and still go to, anyway, don't have those items.  When we went out, which was at least twice a month for dinner, and near weekly for dim sum lunches, we ordered things like choy sum and beef (default is gai lan (Chinese broccoli) but I didn't like gai lan when I was little), roast chicken and steamed fish.

I think the funny thing in the age discussion is no one has mentioned Nicola Coughlan, who is the oldest of the debutantes being portrayed.  She is 37!  I can buy her as early 20's. Even outside of Bridgerton, she doesn't look anywhere near 37.

I guess some people just look young for their age!  Many people think I'm still in my 30s, but I'm going to be 45 in a few months!

  5. I actually wonder why they decided to hire nearly-30 or 30-something actors opposed to early to mid 20-somethings to play characters who are supposed to be teenagers was.  Or maybe they just wanted that alternate universe ton that they already have.

  6. When I was little, we'd mostly order pizza from a chain called Pizza Pizza.  Looking back, it wasn't the world's best pizza (but there was a lot less choice in the 80s and 90s.  It was that, Pizza Hut, Dominos and Pizza Nova for chains.  There was a place called Pat & Mario's which was one of the first in Toronto to start offering wood burning oven pies, but I don't think the city was ready for that kind of pizza yet.  It was much thinner crust, more Neapolitan style).  Kind of bad, actually.  These days, you'll probably find us ordering from Pi Co (yes, Pi as in 3.14) which has been popping up EVERYWHERE recently.  I think there are as many Pi Cos as there are Tim Hortons and Starbucks near me!  Okay, maybe not a many as the coffee places I mentioned...lol.

I am in Canada so while we do have some (who am I kidding, we have a lot of) American chain restaurants we also notably don't have some that I gather are fairly big.  I base this on how often I hear them referenced on TV.  We don't have, for example, The Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, Red Robin, White Castle, In and Out just to name a few.  I've gone to the Olive Garden when in the States and liked it but so far haven't tried any of the others.

    We have Cheesecake Factory here!

We HAD Olive Garden, but they all shuttered around 2000, maybe earlier.  I think our equivalent is East Side Mario’s.  Haven’t been there in years. Toronto is getting its first Shake Shack (first in Canada) this summer.

Yesterday, they announced Red Lobster is closing all their restaurants.

A lot of people my age just don't want to go to chains we grew up going to unless it's fast food.  But even then...my son has not been inside a McDonald's since BEFORE he could have solids.  So essentially, he's never been in one and I think he's basically had a Happy Meal once or twice in his life (takeout, since it was the during the pandemic).  We typically go to local/independent restaurants, so it's not like he's never dined out.  A new Chipotle-like Mexican place opened at a foodcourt...errr...sorry, FOOD HALL near us and we're probably going to take him there to try the food soon.

  9. My mother had me when she was 30, so many of their friends' kids are now in their late 40s rather than their MID-40s (unless they were the last kid in the family).  My mom and dad married at 23 and 24 respectively, but waited a few years, until they had a nest egg and to have any kids.  I was their one and done (Mom had a tough pregnancy).  A friend of my mom's had another child with her second husband and that child is a few years younger than me.  I think she's just turning 40?

I was already married for 2 years when Anne Hathaway was born.  So yeah, "young" is relative, LOL.

I didn't really love "Devil Wears Prada" when I first saw it in the theater but when I caught it late one night on TV a couple of years ago I liked it better.  I suppose it's supposed to be ridiculous.  I guess something changed in me and I was able to go there with it that time.

When I mean “old,” it also has to do with it dawning on me that I could be a mother to a teenager because my reality is that I’m a mom to a 5 1/2 year old.  And people around me, even those my age, have elementary school aged kids.  Yes, I know my parents were around my age when I was in high school, but that was the 1990s!

ER sent me home with no treatment. Basically they said if I have a stomach ache , viomit etc come back. I live alone who exactly is gonna call 911 for me when I am in that state???

Basically they refused to treat me. And I have insurance!

So I’m going home still feeling off…

Will be googling a new hospital… lucky it’s NYC so I have other choices.

Can you try a walk-in tomorrow, or do you need someone now?

Ok, but I guess that’s all they can get at this point.  I did like her in Devil Wears Prada.  Then, she fizzled out like the rest.  Now they go for the plastic surgery and ruin themselves altogether.

Well, Reese Witherspoon and Kate Hudson both could be appropriate.  But neither seem convincing as a curator/gallery owner.

I love the costumes.  I'm too short to pull her look off, though (same reason why the actresses mentioned above can't).

I know it seems like I’m a wuss and my checkup was no big deal, but actually it was a big deal.  Ten years ago, I had a slight pain in my upper back near my shoulder that seemed like a pulled muscle.  After going to Emegency, it was a heart attack, probably a few weeks prior.  Next morning, I had five stents put in my chest.  So, what I thought was a simple little thing, turned to be life threatening.  I just had to clarify that.  Beware of little things .. it could be something.  Better safe than sorry.  Just sayin.

You are still young.  I just started watching it, and I’m liking it so far.  The guy is real cute.

"Young" is relative.  I'm three years older than Anne Hathaway.

I thought Benedict was going to be an artist but that has completely disappeared.

I think he lost confidence after he found out Anthony influenced his acceptance to art school.

I'm confused why Cressida hasn't married before her third season.

Because men find her annoying and won’t court her after speaking with her once?

Colin is a bore. I wanted Benedict and Sophie ‘s season and I’m wondering if we’ll ever get it .

I'm wondering if they're just switching three and four.  I'm listening to the "official" show podcast and they're saying that a lot of fans were more or less begging for Polin, so they decided to speed that up first?  I don't think they're going to go right book 5, are they?

  17. Not sure if this is supposed to be a peeve or just general health chit-chat.  Anyway, I went in for a pre-op MRI/follow up today and right before the last image, the machine decided to crash.  The procedure already took longer than expected (the form said it was going to be about an hour, but it was 90 minutes) and I was getting uncomfortable.  They said they wanted to restart/reboot the machine just to get the last pic.  I told them how uncomfortable I was and they said that they had enough (or should, anyway).  I asked them if whatever was taken downloaded and saved and they assured me that they were.  Don't you just love technology??

I **loved** that movie!  Meryl Streep can disappear into any role she plays (e.g, Julia Child, and Nora Ephron in Heartburn). Stanley Tucci plays Paul. In his wonderful memoir, he writes about the "Julia" cast going out for dinner at a small restaurant in the French countryside. I was amazed to read that he had the exact same experience with an order of andouille that I had in Nice 🙀

I love the movie too!  That’s all I wanted to say.  Oh and I also love The Devil Wears Prada.  😊

  19. Actually, I think the Mondrich storyline is interesting.  I’m not only interested to see how they handle the situation of a child inheriting a title (not sure if they’re really going to bother with that) but how someone like them manages to deal with a completely new environment and culture.  It’s like being an immigrant without being an immigrant.

Lord Vegetarian- I can’t stop laughing! Also hoping that he marries Cressida so she could get away from her awful father. Can’t believe that I would feel sorry for her after her behavior the first two seasons.

She’s the way she is so she could find ways to get away, I think.  And she’ll get to be alone and have whatever friends she wants once she DOES marry.  But her attitude also repels men.  Save for Lord Plant-Based/Vegetarian (I wonder how vegetarians got all their nutrients back then.  Did they?  So many options available now, but not sure about back then).

From what I have read, women were kept in the dark or just not given many details. It was assumed the men, who were "allowed" to sleep around, would know what to do.

It's sad how innocent upper class (especially) women were in terms of knowing about sex.  It's almost to the point of humour by today's standards.  That being said, when I was 10, a girl asked me whether "Mommies and Daddies wear clothes when making babies."  I told her yes and she thought I was dumb.  I suppose 10 is old for not knowing-knowing, but I'm an only child (I knew how they were made scientifically speaking, just not the act itself (well, for most people)).  And technically, I wasn't wrong (is talking about it TMI?).  She DID say clothes and not pants.  LOL.

  22. @Cloud9Shopper I can understand where you're coming from.  You know how I mentioned moons ago (?) on Primetimer that I was more or less forced to quit an amazing internship that I thought was a mix of both what I wanted (event planning/PR) and what my family wanted (a major financial institution)?  My dad said that it was because the job wouldn't get me anywhere (how would he know that?) and that since the interview and job I got was through a referral/connections, that not taking it would be a big mistake?  Well, it was.  And I was let go shortly after.  I think their HR could see how miserable I was.  I wasn't able to get the internship back since they A) already hired a replacent and B) you're only allowed to go through the program ONCE.  I'm surprised my parents are more supportive of my writing.  I think immigrant parents can be like this sometimes, due to culture clash, even coming from my well-integrated parents!

  23. I empathize with the Mondriches trying to make sure they play by the rules.  It’s their first time out there and they need to make a good impression.  But they also can’t be too fake and obvious.  It’s like being that new kid in school and trying to be cool. Didn’t work well for me…lol…but I didn’t mind being the weirdo who liked Broadway and country over Alanis (I didn’t/don’t DISLIKE her either.  Just not as much) or Cantopop.

Question:  when a minor inherits a title like Nicholas did, would his untitled parents be regent (would they still be called regent?  Or is that only for royalty?)?
