I certainly would not call it "discrimination" to protect one's property from destruction. Seems to me that if a potential tenant weights 712 pounds, as this one does, and the property does not have bariatric-strong toilet and bathtub, that would be a good enough reason not to allow them to live there. Imagine 712 pounds landing on an ordinary toilet (not to mention the gigantic volumes said toilet would be required to swallow up and flush)? Seems like it would make it shatter and potentially break it loose from the pipes, potentially causing flooding.

Those poor cats! I wonder what she does for litter boxes?
-
Ha! Just think! She could leap off the building, God would reach down his hand to save her, carve off 500 pounds miraculously, and she'd no longer have to hope to be approved for surgery! And, she'd have proved Dr Now wrong! Maybe THEN she could weasel Dr Now into that apology she so desperately wants!

Perhaps, like the naughty kid who acts out, even though he knows there are consequences, "Negative attention is better than none at all." Or maybe she and Freddy and all of their nasty enabling friends love that she's now a TV star. They're not "normal". Any rules of decent society don't apply to them. All bets are off.

Addiction. I was thinking about the addiction thing this morning. Last night I was telling my husband about Schenee and Freddy and I said it's pretty much along the same lines as watching "Intervention". These 600-pounders are serious addicts, in just as much serious trouble as an alcoholic or junkie on the street. I struggle with weight (size 14/16) and am able to deal with it much better now that I recognize food addiction in myself. Watching this show or Intervention, I've learned to recognize how the "addict brain" can send messages like, "Go ahead, have that piece of cake". It takes my rational brain to overrule it and remind myself of the intense cravings that happen if that sugary cake hits my system. I can only succeed when I treat myself like an alcoholic who says, "One drink is too much, and 1000 are not enough". So this leads me to wonder why these patients never get addiction counseling. In some episodes past, Dr Now would use the words "addict" and "addiction". Why is this not standard? When I hear them say, "I mostly stuck to the diet but I had to cheat", I wish they had been counseled about the addict brain and how to fight those messages, and that cravings only increase/become unbearable with every bite. Wouldn't Schenee and Freddy be able to deal with this better if they understood that she's an addict and he's an enabler?

My assumption? They're men who are felons and/or just plain lazy, looking for a free place to live, with a woman they can dominate. Or just plain losers who no self-esteem whatsoever, who believe that no other woman would want them so they take what they can get.

I wonder if a landlord, in feature of the excess wear and tear on his property, could turn down someone so obese? Besides the excess weight on the property, there's also that issue that she's too large to use the toilet or shower - so there's a serious question for the landlord about sanitation and odors and hazardous waste disposal if she's using diapers? Plus, 2 pitbulls. How would their apartment smell? And having seen the episode, imagine the amount of screaming you'd hear through the paper-thin walls of cheap apartments? Are landlords allowed to make such decisions that protect their investment AND the rights of the others who live there?

I read your comment too fast too and thought I had to go back and edit! Ha! Seriously, everyone here sounds like an English major, which is always refreshing, but especially so, after this episode featuring that "knowledged" creature who can barely pronounce anything right due to that icky tongue piercing and minimal knowledge of the language.

Small Talk: Only 2 Ounces Of Commenting Allowed
Trees replied to Meredith Quill's topic in My 600-lb Life
Congratulations! My daughter adopted a 20-pound cat from a shelter. His ideal weight is 15, but he was waiting in the shelter for 6 months and he put on all that excess. So, she had a health problem last summer and had to move home with this big chunk of sassy cat (and her dog). At the time, I had 2 kittens, ages 8 months. He stomped into my room, trying to own the place, and the little female kitten chased him down the hall! Fast forward to last winter - big kitty developed a serious constipation problem. Had to be hospitalized and even 4 enemas could not completely clear it up. I learned that the extreme obesity damages their intestines. We've been getting him through, though. He's down to 13.5 pounds and still struggles but he's such a character, we give him our all. -
I wonder how soon she and Freddy will put up a GoFundMe? Side note, I am constantly thrilled and amazed at the wit and fine use of the English language in this forum! Thank you everyone for the laughs and good writing.

Best post ever! Thanks for the laugh!!!!!!!!!!!

I mentioned it more for the point about "that's who is touching your stuff when you buy Amazon Prime." I own a business that sells clothing on Amazon (we do our own shipping, though) and it's alarming to know how badly Amazon treats its warehouse workers. That said, yay for Freddy for holding down a job.
-
OMG I just saw Freddy's job on his FB page! He's a packer at an Amazon warehouse. So next time you use your Amazon prime account, know the reality of who touched all your stuff. His quote is pretty ironic, after seeing him lift up massive "folds" of flesh to clean his wife, "Hard working husband thats in love we are Hawkins an we Dont fold for no man But God........"

Every time I watch this show, I think of the business opportunity... A multi-purpose facility in Houston for the morbidly obese! The months Dr Now keeps somebody in the hospital? This facility would take them for less $ than the hospital. The patients who need a place to stay briefly for their consults? Short-term living. Out-patient, open-to-the-public classes on healthy eating, cooking, food awareness, "chair-yoga", etc Food addiction treatement out-patient Long-term living, like a nursing home, for the morbidly obese, with transport to doctor appointments. This would allow patients to move there alone instead of with all their families. A "go-to" weight-loss support "fat farm" camp type of place. I'm thinking along the lines of the very nice place my aged FIL moved to when his wife died. 3 meals a day, housekeeping, etc. But it also had separate facilities for: family members to live temporarily for visits urgent-care hospital alternative long-term care when health declined Anyway, until now, James, Assanti and Marla were my most despised patients. This one totally tops the list. I watched part of the "Super-sized" last night and they said in one of their text boxes that it has been 6 years since she has been able to use the toilet by herself!!!! Geez! Any normal, decent person would be humbled by one day of being unable to take care of those basic needs - to have one's privates wiped like a little baby. 6 years and she carrys on like she's queen of the world. Despicable person.

If I recall correctly, Freddy explained that "we lookin' for a place that ain't all nasty."

When I heard her say "I am knowledged!" after shouting about some alleged college, and then Freddy saying Dr Now must not be used to dealing with people who have her level of "intelligenced", I was thinking that this one was going to be the ultimate bitch. That scene had to be worse than anything Penny ever said, including the "wash my own vagina" line. Of all the stupid people that have appeared on this show, this one had to be the very dumbest. Ignorant, uneducated, but devious and scheming. She supports Freddy "financially"? That's really weird. I wonder if he has left her by now, with this disgrace having been aired to the world. What must be wrong in his life that he has to stoop to being chained to this evil addict? Is he a felon? I wonder if this show airs overseas? I hate to think of people thinking that creeps like this represent Americans. Oh and it's so upsetting when they throw out a horrible fact, like the documented molestation when she was a child, but don't let us know if the molester faced consequences. Did he go jail? Is he on the registry? Why didn't that so-called (and obese) mother of hers get therapy for that poor child after she took her to the hospital and verified the abuse?

What to Call the People on My 600 Lb Life?

Addicts. -
Ha! Me too! I also notice how so many of the people have those gigantic crosses hanging all over their walls. Finally I saw one around Freddy's neck. Crosses and tattoos - things you always see on this show. I'm glad they aired it. What better way to truly demonstrate the power of food addiction. I was just disappointed that, for all his tough words, Dr Now didn't explain to her that she's an addict, same as a junkie on the street.

S06.E00: Steven & Justin Assanti: Where Are They Now?
Trees replied to PrincessPurrsALot's topic in My 600-lb Life
Our society did away with most mental hospitals years ago, which is why we have such a huge homeless population and other issues. This guy, Steven, is an example of why we need them again. "Asylum" means help, respite, safety... and that's what they were designed to be years ago - a safe and peaceful place for those with tortured minds. No way in hell is this guy sane. He's completely out of control. Shame on TLC and Dr Now's son for seeking him out as clickbait for their show. They knew from the start that the guy would no way qualify for their weight-loss program. It is truly hard to get help for someone who is struggling with mental illness. Someone else mentioned prison and that's where this guy should be, since there is no mental institution for him. He'd be so much better off and perhaps get some of the help he needs. -
"good tooth-to-tattoo ratio" HA!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's astonishing to me how many of these patients and their enablers have tattoos. I notice the same thing if I ever watch and episodes of Cops. Anyway, Alicia and her partner really seemed like they were going to make it. I hope they become a subject of "where are they now" down the line. I think the answer is that they're addicted to food and being cared for. You could ask the same question about why a heroin addict spends all day finding stuff to steal so he can go shoot poison into his veins. They're addicts. Dr Now used to use the words "addict" and "addiction" in early seasons. I haven't heard him say it in a while.

Have you been able to keep the weight off, @LoreliLee?
-
Oh my gosh! I thought I had seen every show! I just now realized that I missed this one! I hope I can find it On Demand or someplace! Anybody know where to watch it?
-
Agree but I think they do get more counseling than they show. And your sensible comments (I agree with them) kind of support my theories that they select the more shocking/unpleasant/bound-to-fail subjects because the episode is more shocking. Even when I was in a hospital program for weight loss where we started with protein shakes, there was a heavy amount of teaching about those things. They held bariatric classes and support groups there too. I believe that the program producers don't show those things, which would be so interesting.... not necessarily just the teaching, but the patients' and families' reactions to the information and their attempts to shop, cook and comply. I feel that the producers are just lazy and follow their same old script for every show. It really bugs me. The topic is SO interesting and the show can be so much better!

You *could* have men by the dozens if you change lower your standards! Apparently what Lisa offers them is a free place to live, no need to hold a job, sex on demand if they deliver food with it... And who knows what else those so-called boyfriends have in their backgrounds? Felonies? Illiteracy? Warrants? On another topic, it was SO obvious from the start that Lisa was resistant, I really do think that they're choosing patients for the shock value vs to truly help them. Surely there are other desperate and willing people who would follow instructions but make boring TV. If I were on the city council in Houston, I'd be having some harsh words with Dr Now for bringing these low-lifes that place such extreme demands on their EMS. How many of those EMS guys have been injured on the job from hoisting one of these entitled mounds of flesh who use an ambulance like the rest of society uses a cab?
-
Here's what makes me nuts. The topic of this program is very fascinating: extreme obesity and the psychological reasons why it happens, how it continues, and the medical implications of living that way and possibly making a change. It could be a MUCH better show - infinitely! But the producers or whomever seem to have written an outline that every episode will follow and they never deviate. In fact, what would be much more interesting would be to see more of what really goes on behind the scenes. We know, for instance, that Dr Now holds support groups. It would be great to see the subjects attending those and reacting. Clearly, there must be more education about the diet than that piece of paper he hands them. Every single episode, though, he gives it to them, they pretend to be surprised by this (THEY'VE NEVER WATCHED THE SHOW?!) and it looks like he sends them off to miraculously lose 50 pounds in 2 months. If, in fact, Dr Now and his team truly wanted to help these folks, they'd be screening and educating the entire family and team of caregivers. Those folks did not become morbidly obese all alone. Their enablers are as sick as the subjects are... addicted to being needed. The whole team - the patient and all the folks stuffing them with food - are ill and need extreme behavioral and psychological testing. I've even started forwarding as soon as I hear those long commentaries begin, especially when I hear the word "because...". It's going to followed by "if I don't, I will die!" or ".. this is my last chance!" or whatever. With such an interesting topic, why must they stick to this narrow script and outline? It's such a waste.
