  2. Currently reading American Sphinx by Joseph Ellis about the character of Thomas Jefferson, but it's kind of a slog.  Some parts are interesting, but maybe I'm just not as fascinated with him as some historians are.

Hamilton summed up his opinion of his character in one paragraph:  "I admit that his politics are tinctured with fanaticism, that he is too much in earnest in his democracy, that he has been a mischievous enemy to the principal measures of the past administration, that he is crafty and persevering in his objects, that he is not scrupulous about the means of success, nor very mindful of truth, and is a contemptible hypocrite."

I dvr'd it any will probably watch it tomorrow.  What's your take on it?

I don't want to say too much if you haven't seen it, but.... the first hour covers Jared's backstory with the Subway diet and his growing fame and popularity.  Rochelle is a journalist and radio host who develops a long friendship with him and tape records their conversations.  She's the one who eventually goes to the FBI.  Her own two kids were put at risk and suffered because of her clandestine activities though.  I wanted to hear more about that.

  6. You'd think big publishers would be the vanguard against this, but Puffin and Penguin are headquartered in the UK.  Possibly due to the monarchy, who've never been big fans of Free Speech, it can take place without too much concern or protest.   I remember reading about someone being arrested for yelling at Prince Andrew "You're a dirty old man!" or something similar.

  8. Who IS this group of censors or "sensitivity readers"? I wondered.  They call themselves Inclusive Minds,   “a collective for people who are passionate about inclusion and accessibility in children’s literature” but the changes I've read have been rather ridiculous.  To find out more about them, I went to their facebook page but hit a wall.

    https://www.facebook.com/InclusiveMinds/events/?ref=page_internal

They need to be stopped.  Who's next?

Sir Walter Ralegh, by John Winton

This one surprised me by how good it is. The name John Winton was unknown to me, but it seems he mainly wrote about the British Navy in WWII.  I would put this in my Top Ten Bios alongside authors like Chernow, McCullough and Stacy Schiff. The amount of research alone is impressive, yet it remains extremely readable without any drag. What an interesting life! I really didn't want it to end, especially so tragically.

Critics blast 'absurd' rewrites to Roald Dahl's children's books

"Britain’s Telegraph newspaper first reported the changes Friday, laying out the hundreds of changes Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, and the Roald Dahl Story Company made to the books since 2020, even adding paragraphs never written by the late Dahl.

Award-winning author Salman Rushdie called the changes “absurd censorship.”

  14. The 1851 Irish Emigrant's Guide for the US, written by a couple of Irish-Americans during the great Famine.  Fascinating stuff.  Includes everything from where to buy your passage, what to pay (1/2 of the listed prices, or about $10. for steerage! Kids under 14 are $5.00)  Of course this does not include dining service, mattresses, blankets, dishes, or anything really, except basic food staples that must be cooked yourself and a bucket to wash in.

It took about 4-6 weeks to cross the pond.
