Marvel ‘Diluted’ Audience’s ‘Focus and Attention’ by Making So Many Disney+ TV Shows, Says Bob Iger
By Zack Sharf   July 13, 2023
    https://variety.com/2023/film/news/marvel-flops-too-many-disney-tv-shows-bob-iger-1235669262/

TVLine ran this same story, but then edited it to clarify that Iger meant Marvel’s focus had been diluted, not the audience’s.

The eight live-action TV series that have rolled out on Disney+ since January 2021 “diluted focus” at Marvel and in turn played a role in waning theatrical performance, says Disney CEO Bob Iger.

“There have been some disappointments. We would have liked some of our more recent releases to perform better,” Iger said at this week’s annual Sun Valley Conference, a gathering of A-list execs from media and tech (per Variety). “I think in our zeal to basically grow our content significantly to serve mostly our streaming offerings, we ended up taxing our people way beyond — in terms of their time and their focus — way beyond where they had been.”

“Marvel’s a great example of that,” Iger continued in making his point. “They had not been in the TV business at any significant level. Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention” at Marvel Studios. “That is, I think, more of the cause than anything.”

Note: A previous version of this story mistook Iger’s comment as saying consumer interest, not the focus of Marvel creatives, had been “diluted.”

  2. I only know who Blue Beetle is because of watching Young Justice.  I’m surprised they’re not doing more marketing for that film.

Weekend estimates have Flash falling to #8, behind Little Mermaid.

  3. So in the Secret Invasion storyline in the comics (which I haven’t read) and in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, one of the major characters was Veranke, the Skrull Queen.  In the comics, she replaced Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman).  In EMH, she replaced Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird).

I know right now the Big Bad of the series is Gravik, but I’m wondering whether he might actually be reporting to someone else further up, and if Veranke might pop up later as someone we already know.  Sharon Carter perhaps? Or Olivia Coleman’s character?   I had thought possibly Maria Hill but the first episode seems to rule that out.

In his podcast Kevin Smith said he talked to the son of the guy who co-owns the right to Batman movies and was told that if The Flash opened as well as The Batman they would make Batman Beyond with Keaton. So….

😂 ok yeah, I had totally missed that.

There are rumors that a Batman Beyond movie was tentatively going to be made if The Flash performed well, now canceled as a result of the box office performance.

I’m absolutely delighted that this has effectively killed any talk of a sequel.  But I’m not sure how a Batman Beyond movie would have been tied to Flash’s success in any way.  I mean, I don’t really care about Batman Beyond one way or the other (I’ve never gotten around to watching the series) but I’m failing to see what one has to do with the other.  What have I missed?

  6. At what point can we officially call it a bomb?  Per Deadline, it looks like The Flash will end up in third place this weekend, and possibly fourth, being beat by both Elemental and Across the Spider-Verse.

Two animated movies, Disney/Pixar’s Elemental and Sony Animation’s monolith Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, have punked The Flash and are in a fierce fight for No. 1 at the weekend box office with about $18 million apiece….

Meanwhile, Warner Bros/DC’s The Flash is looking at a second Friday of $4.3M and second weekend of $14M, right now down a massive 75%. Should that hold, it will be worse than the 66% second-weekend drop weathered by Warner Bros/DC’s Green Lantern back in 2011….

Flash could lose third to Sony’s new R-rated Jennifer Lawrence comedy No Hard Feelings which has a shot at $14M-$15M after a $5.3M Friday…..

  7. I know in a lot of forums, comics spoilers are not allowed in the general threads.  I thought it might be good to have a place to discuss how Secret Invasion has been handled in the comics and the various cartoons.  For me personally, I realized today that a lot of my expectations for this series were shaped by how it was handled in the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon.  What about you all?  What do you think might or might not happen, based on the original comics storyline and/or how it’s been handled in the Marvel cartoons?

  8. If that sticks…..:not cool, show. ☹️ I thought for sure she was going to turn Skrull after she was shot, but then they zoomed out and she never turned…….what?!?!

Other than that, yeah, I was disappointed that G’iah double-crossed her dad, but I did think that was a bit too easy, so I wasn’t shocked about that.

Withholding judgment for now, but I do hope this doesn’t turn out to be another Falcon and the Winter Soldier.  That series was such a disappointment.

  9. I’ve seen some comments saying that they never even bothered to address the issue of who killed Barry’s mom - is that true?  That seems like rather a massive oversight. 😒

It’s petty of me, and I wasn’t impressed with Miller in The Justice League, but reading all these posts about how awful this movie is being received makes me happy. Yes, I SAID IT.

Same here.  I was feeling petty hoping it would bomb; glad I’m not the only one.

  11. From Deadline’s analysis

But there’s something else going on here with The Flash, billed by co-DC Boss James Gunn back in January as “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” and that’s that moviegoers disagree, giving it a B CinemaScore and 77% on Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak exits with a 59% recommend. That buzz, coupled with the fact that The Flash is very male-heavy, and not pulling in as many women as Aquaman and Wonder Woman is slowing it down.

This summer is loaded with movies and there wasn’t much space between Ant-Man 3, Guardians 3 and the Marvels.

Yeah, I think it was a good call, spacing them out a little more.

And we have Wonder Woman and we have Wonder Woman [1984], which doesn’t even match what happened in Wonder Woman one.

    ***

We’ve talked to Gal [Gadot]. She’s up for doing stuff. We’re not sure what we’re going to do with that.

He’s not wrong about WW84 - that was a mess.  And I’m glad they’re not totally ruling out Gal returning in the future, although something about the way this is said makes me think they’d still rather cast their own WW.

That said, so much about how this all is being handled and discussed is just totally putting me off, even beyond the total refusal to address the Ezra Miller issue in any meaningful way (which, don’t get me wrong, is a huge issue).  And I’m not even sure I can really put my finger on what it is that’s bothering me.

The emphasis that Damian is Bruce’s “actual son” was a choice that is likely to invoke some strong reactions.

Wow.  That’s certainly a choice.  So the implication is that the others are not his “actual” children because they’re not blood-related?  Fantastic.  🙄

Wait a minute.  Is Grant Morrison the one who had Talia drugging Bruce in order to conceive Damian?
