I noticed they specifically said that Alex is 18, but he's still in high school!

Are you perhaps not American (Canadian?) and not aware that kids usually turn 18 during the senior year in high school in the US?

On a different topic...wasn't Corlys described as "gravely and potentially mortally wounded"? He's walking around like he rolled his ankle. Couldn't disfigure him a little?

I was under the impression that the wound itself wasn't the issue, but the ensuing infection and fever that they weren't sure he would survive.

  3. Imagine how that ending would be if they had found a way to work in the claim of the book that Arrax was faster and could have out-flown Vhaegar if not for the storm.  Maybe if he had bragged that Arrax was the fastest dragon alive to comfort his mother when being sent on his mission, with someone ominously pointing out that was true only if the weather was good.  Then, he finally gets free of the storm and sees open skies where he has the advantage before--BAM--it's chomping time.

That's one thing Otto wanted to slaughter the blacks, not offer terms at all.

I guess Raynys breaking out ended that element of surprise.

No, offering terms instead of trying to kill the Blacks was what Alicent won by getting to Aegon first.  I'd like to think she asserted dominance by making Otto go to Dragonstone knowing that this is the kind of message that can get messengers killed.

But it's an actual war crime to harm Luke as an envoy. Aemond has committed a war crime.

International law is really a set of gentleman's' agreements.  There are no war crimes if there are no international treaties or laws against them.

  6. I think the motivations of Rhaenys become clearer.  She is ultimately loyal to Corlys and it's not her place to pick a side.  She might try to influence him, but it is his decision.  She goes where he goes and she knew him well enough to know that he wasn't guaranteed to be with the Blacks instead of the Greens.  She didn't roast the Greens and she didn't bend the knee to Rhaenyra because she didn't know yet which side Corlys and, thus, she would support.

I have become convinced this episode that Daemon will be solely responsible for the whole Blood and Cheese.

I hope the look on Rhaenyra's face at the end means that she ends up being responsible.  I feel like that would be the better story.

  8. I was ready to root for Aemond being a badass finally getting revenge for his eye, so I'm kind of disappointed that Luke Strong died because Aemond couldn't control his dragon.  He'd still be alive if he'd just given up his eye like a good little bastard.

So the theory is that the main entrance to the Dragonpit was somehow more dragon-resistant than busting through the ceiling?  I don't buy it.

The theory would be that one reason to build the Dragonpit would be to be able to contain the dragons inside and they didn't think in three dimensions, so didn't make the ceiling strong enough.

It's not hard to imagine the Dragonpit being constructed by a paranoid Targaryen who wanted to be able to prevent dragons from being used against him.

In retrospect this really does seem short-sighted, doesn't it? He seemed to believe that Viserys dying before Alicent could successfully work her magic was such a threat, he needed to stop Daemon being heir THAT NIGHT.

Even before Aemma (and Baelon) died, Otto was anti-Daemon.  That's why Daemon kept being moved around to various posts, ending up in charge of the City Watch.

There's a real possibility that Otto was once a reasonable man who was against Daemon being heir for the good of the realm, legitimately fearing another Maegor the Cruel, that he was desperate to remove Daemon from the succession by any means necessary.  Maybe he only went off the rails once he had the opportunity for a royal grandson, but was decent before that.

  11. I think people are obsessing too much about the people killed in the dragonpit.  Assume that the regular way out was barred, so that Rhaenys can either escape through the floor as she did or else not escape at all.  Should she flee or remain a prisoner?  What if there was no way for her to leave without causing even more collateral damage?

The book said she literally whooped the Westeros version of “Yee haw!” and charged.

This is what the book says:

    Quote

Then came an answering roar. Two more winged shapes appeared: the king astride Sunfyre the Golden, and his brother Aemond upon Vhagar. Criston Cole had sprung his trap, and Rhaenys had come snatching at the bait. Now the teeth closed round her.

Princess Rhaenys made no attempt to flee. With a glad cry and a crack of her whip, she turned Meleys toward the foe. Against Vhagar alone she might have had some chance, but against Vhagar and Sunfyre together, doom was certain. The dragons met violently a thousand feet above the field of battle, as balls of fire burst and blossomed, so bright that men swore later that the sky was full of suns. The crimson jaws of Meleys closed round Sunfyre’s golden neck for a moment, till Vhagar fell upon them from above. All three beasts went spinning toward the ground. They struck the ground so hard that stones fell from the battlements of Rook’s Rest half a league away.

I interpret it as her accepting certain death and going out in a blaze of glory because fleeing wasn't a realistic option or else she's really, really dumb to embrace a fight she can't win when she has the option of running away.

Hess also mentioned season two will delve into the nature of his relationship with Rhaenyra which is interesting given it has basically been played up as 'true love' so far in the minds of people.

Maybe he's going to have sex with other women.  Perhaps Mysaria after having her send Blood and Cheese to the Red Keep.

I don't buy the argument that the common folk are somehow immune to the patriarchy and don't care if their ruler has a penis or not. Plus, they are honestly irrelevant as it's the nobles/bannerman whose opinions matter and while many did swear allegiance to Rhaenyra, all bets were off once Aegon II was born and Viserys was dead.

The play in the street that Daemon had Rhaenyra watch gives a clue as to how the smallfolk might react to a cockless monarch.  The feelings of the smallfolk are not wholly irrelevant.  If they were, someone like the High Sparrow could never rise to power.

If we are to accept Alicent's protestations of ignorance and innocence as honest, the inevitable conclusion is that she is, simply put, an idiot.

Well, yeah, but so was Ned Stark.  She's just more likely to keep her head through the first season than he was while being one of the more honorable characters in this drama.

And its inconsistent with previous episodes. Almost as if the show wants us to put all the dislike we'd have for her alicent onto her other team green members.

I think it's been consistent, but I've considered Alicent more likeable than most of the players on the other side.

As early as episode six, she was telling Aegon he was going to be king. She might not have known about Otto's plans, even if he wasn't exactly subtle about them since Aegon was born, but she was still gunning to take the throne from Rhaenyra.

Does she really want to displace Rhaenyra or is she more interested in preventing the Strong bastards from stealing a throne that doesn't belong to them due to their illegitimate parentage?  In Alicent's ideal world, I think she wants her Aegon to be Rhaenyra's heir.

But that taboo didn't keep Rhaenys from fleeing at Rook's Rest when she chose to fight Aegon and Aemond.

Did she have a choice?  The book says she didn't try to flee, but it was a trap and maybe she didn't have the chance to get away from a two-on-one situation.

I was surprised no one shot an arrow at her but have we seen crossbows yet? Has that tech been created? We have seen scorpions on Dragonstone. I was waiting for her to take an arrow and then her dragon killed.

They certainly existed by the time of GoT.  One was used to kill Ros and Tywin.

  19. I can give a plausible reason for why Rhaenys let them live, I think.

The instinct of the Gold Cloaks was to close the doors.  Otto is yelling at them to open the doors because he wants Rhaenys to have an exit lane so that she will just leave.  Do you think he wants the doors open because he wants as many smallfolk lives to be saved?  He just doesn't want to put her in a situation where she has to fight her way out because he dies in that scenario.

If Rhaenys cooks up some Green barbecue, the doors will be closed, she will be trapped, and there will be a strong possibility that she and her dragon will be killed.  She doesn't want that.  Aegon and company are hostages.  She demonstrates that she can kill them if she isn't given a way out.

In the background, the doors stop closing.  Once her off-ramp is confirmed, she sticks to the terms of her unspoken deal, that they get to live so long as she gets to escape, and flies off.
