  1. shapeshifter, thank you. I watched every minute yesterday and was happy with the outcome. It isn't like I didn't see this 30+ years ago or anything. I guess what caught my attention was how pregnant Tyne Daly looked and I looked it up and she had her last daughter in 1985, right before this episode aired. Ms. Daly is one of those women who are pregnant in every pore of their bodies. Most of my family is like that, no little basketball bumps in the tummy for us!

Me too.  I loved the show right from the start because I was working in a Congressional office and our AA (today's AA's have fancier titles, of course) was our very own Ted Baxter. We all loathed him.  He was a legend in his own mind, just like Ted.

I have to know, in WDC? I lived on Capitol Hill during most of the MTM show's original run and my roommate worked for a Congressman.

  3. I don't know that it's a favorite, but it's not bad as far as the begging for money for a good cause goes. It's for Smile Train, an organization that provides surgery and other needed services in 3rd world countries to children born with cleft pallets. One little boy melts my heart when he says, "I can't wait to be handsome." Oh, sweetie, all children should feel handsome and beautiful.

  4. one thing that I find very interesting with Mary Beth's pregnancy story line is that she is on active duty almost to the end of her pregnancy. On shows made more recently than Cagney and Lacey, almost the minute a woman police officer discovers she is pregnant, she informs her superior officer and is put on desk duty. There were a couple of storylines about that on NYPD Blue. One where Diane Russell knows she is newly pregnant and Bobby wants her to go on light duty and they have several fights about her not wanting to go on desk duty and him feeling she is risking the baby. And then later, Connie finds out she's pregnant and immediately goes to their boss and tells him and goes on desk duty. I've seen it in other shows too, I just can't remember them this minute.

Cagney and Lacey were detectives very early when women weren't and were starting to be. The show did a pretty realistic job of showing them breaking down barriers to women being and doing anything in the police department. I was a young woman when this show came out and I loved it. I knew their struggles, I faced a lot of similar ones, not in the police department. I never considered that as a career, police do not hire 4'11" police officers. Now, I'm enjoying some of their discussions and I see more depth than I did when the show was on originally. Chris' constant struggle with career vs marriage and family and fighting to have a career especially with Mary Beth pushing her towards marriage. Mary Beth and Harvey had a rather different kind of marriage with Harvey staying at home at different times to take care of the kids, he didn't always like it. I still have trouble not seeing him as his character in Dark Shadows, lol. But their relationship paved the way for other shows later for couples to have unconventional marriages, Joe and Allison DuBois on Medium, Joe shares fully in child rearing. I just find it interesting. And Cagney and Lacey did pave the way for many other women to be police officers on many shows.

  5. thank you shapeshifter. Like I said, it's been a week or so since I looked at their website. I see that Cold Case is losing an hour and so is Medium, I've been really enjoying Medium. I'm glad to see that Cagney and Lacey will still be around, I was concerned about Mary Beth's baby, lol. Like I don't already know the outcome of that!

  6. so, RMPeterson, you're a Startv fan? lol.

For those who like Rizolli and Isles, it will be coming to Start on Jan 4 at 4 and 9 PM Central. Looks like they are replacing Cagney & Lacey and Ghost Whisperer. I'm ok with Ghost Whisperer, while it was a guilty pleasure, I watched enough of it and I'm ready to move on. But I have really been enjoying Cagney & Lacey. I hope they get Mary Beth to deliver that baby before they lose the show. And if they do, I hope Roku will continue to show it so I can catch up to the end. I don't really know that they will be losing those shows or if they're going to move things around. I looked at their site a week or so ago and nothing has changed on the schedule or the shows yet. Probably won't until Jan 4. If they lose Cagney and Lacey, I guess it will be back to DABL for Escape to the Country for me. I'm back to Cold Case being episodes I've seen since I started watching Start, so I'll probably quit watching those too. There are shows I don't mind seeing over and over and over but Cold Case is not one of them.

I never could get into Rizolli and Isles. I like both actresses, but I couldn't get into the characters or the stories.

  7. I think Pillsbury changed it's packaging. Those things used to pop open while peeling the paper off, but I recently opened some Cinnamon rolls and had a terrible time getting them open. Whacking did no good, I used a spoon, but it was difficult.

  8. More songs from commercials I forgot to mention that irritate me. On MSNBC, and I haven't the faintest idea what the ad is for, "I'm a thousand miles from nowhere." To me, if you are a thousand miles from nowhere, you've made choices, so shut up.

I think it's T Mobile, "I want it all, I want it all and I want it now." That's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

  9. Today, I had to go to Walmart. I was almost finished and still needed some wrapping paper, went over to the Christmas section to see what I could find. This was the only place in the building that I heard any music and I wish I hadn't heard what I heard. It went something like, "it's Christmas time, it's Christmas time." That was really all I heard, but it was the slowest, most dreadful thing. What it sounded like was when a 45 is played at 33. I thought as I was rushing to get away from that noise was, if I were in any kind of bad mood, this would make me depressed or if I were depressed, it would make me suicidal. I have no idea what that noise was.

  10. I have never eaten anything that makes me break into song or more specifically, drank anything that makes me start making weird musical? noises. I really hate the Krueg or Kreug - I don't drink coffee so I have no need for one and I don't know how to spell it. Those two fools are annoying me nearly as much as the crappy song in the Old Navy Christmas commercials.

Then there's the "I don't care, I love it" bs that seems to be used by everyone, that one has annoyed me since the first time I heard it. I hear that the person singing Amazing Grace in the Covenant House ads took the Michael Bolton course in the importance of enunciation in singing.

Auld Lang Syne is being used by someone to sell something or beg for money and that singer decided to change some of the lyrics, I guess to modernize them - they didn't need modernization. Hey, you singer! Get off my lawn!

  11. I'm not much of a Paul McCartney fan either and I detest that song, along with Silly Little Love Song. He is good at writing those very commercial, catchy ditties. Helped make the Beatles more commercial, but I have long since had enough of him. He was the cute Beatle, but I was over that many, many years ago.

(and also the coconut Ferrero Rocher is absolutely as good {better than, really} as the excessive reactions of the people in the commercials)

a little off topic, do they have the hazelnut? I hate hazelnut and love coconut, I'd probably try them if they are just coconut.

as for the Coke commercials, I still love the "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," there's a version with candles, I thought (it's been a zillion years) that that was a Christmas ad one year. I haven't seen the new ad y'all are talking about. For some reason Start, MSNBC, and Discovery Science don't show many holiday ads.

I haven't seen the old Hersey Bells this year, I did see the newer ad and didn't like it. I have a soft spot for the old one because during one airing a few years ago, my then puppy watched the screen intently the entire time the ad was on, the quit as soon as the ad was over. He really doesn't pay attention to the tv at all anymore.

Regarding the discussion of Medicare commercials (make them stop!), the one that's set up like a talk show with the guy interviewing Rhonda is the one that's bugging me right now.

any commercial that has a fake talk show or fake focus group or fake infomercial irritates the h**l out of me.

  14. Frost, it's ok to want to see new episodes, I miss them too, even if I am being an adult and not complaining. If it makes you feel any better, I discover TWOP and their "commercial" thread on 9/11. I got excited and put up a stupid post. I had watched news all day and knew what was going on, it's just my brain needed a break from the news. I felt terrible for a long time, I'm still rather embarrassed by my post even though I think all traces of TWOP's comment boards have disappeared. It's hard not to want things back the way they used to be. We'll get there, steps have been taken and more are being taken daily.

  15. I decided to watch Roku tonight and they have Magnum! 6 seasons is what the banner said, I haven't checked yet. Hope so. I got about halfway through season 4 when Amazon had it. I really want to see the last season. Have to see Rick's wedding again to see if it's as awful as I remember it being.

  16. In relation to absolutely nothing in any previous post, I just need to vent. I live with my sister, she's several years younger than I and I am learning more about her than I ever wanted to know. I used to watch shows with a profiler and they would say, "the killer has a disorganized mind." I never could figure out what was meant by that. Now I know, I don't understand it, but I see it in action daily. My sister couldn't plan her way out of a paper bags with 2 sides slit open. She gets something on her mind, stews about it for several hours or days, then rains hellfire down because something must be done right this minute, usually meaning she expects me to drop whatever and jump to fix it. I don't work that way.

Our bathroom faucet has been dripping for a couple of months now and is getting worse. I did mention it several weeks ago. I'm only allowed to mention something like that once or else I'm nagging. She got the water bill and it's higher. (duh) So she told me we must have a leak. I said, yes, the bathroom sink. This was a couple days ago. Tonight at nearly midnight, she decided something must be done this instant! I've been studying the handles on that faucet and I can't figure out how they come off, they are like levers, not knobs, there's no screw and I can't see how to remove them. I'm not sure I could do it, I don't have the physical abilities I used to have. She didn't wait for any more explanations. A few minutes later she knocked on my door and said she'd just get a cheap new faucet and replace them herself! (not ever going to happen, just believe me.) During this tirade she mumbled something about turning the water off under the sink or putting a bowl in the sink, I had quit listening by that time. She rarely uses the bathroom sink, I'm the one that uses it frequently, so I guess she's planning to punish me for not being able to replace those washers or something. Now all during this, I was trying to have my quiet time so I can go to sleep. I don't sleep will and anything can upset my sleep. Well, she did it. She sleeps all day and is up all night, I think she takes a perverse pleasure in having her day opposite the rest of the world and she will chew off an arm or leg of anyone that interrupts her sleep. But I got chewed out for wanting to go to sleep at midnight. We had a rather big screaming match and I attempted to go to sleep, but it didn't happen, maybe tomorrow night.

But now comes the part that has me so puzzled. I went to the bathroom and she had put a bowl in the sink for the water to drip into, why? beats me. And, she had removed the aerator from the faucet and it's nowhere to be found, again why? I have no idea what she thinks those things will accomplish. When I've calmed down, maybe in about 3 days, I'll ask. Right now I wouldn't be able to ask without a great deal of sarcasm and that won't help.

Just need to vent, don't expect any answers. Bipolar disorders can be more difficult for the family members than the person with the disorder.

Update, things calmed down, thanks for letting me vent. My sister's ex-son-in-law came over and replaced the washers, it's still not quite right, but there's not a steady stream of water now. After I got an hour nap in, I could handle things a little better and I did ask why she removed the aerator, she knew there was a washer in it and thought that was the washer that needed replace. I really wish she'd stop "fixing" things. She gave me the aerator, I've got it back in the faucet, but I can't get it screwed in tight enough just yet. Tomorrow when I've had a full night's sleep, I'll try to put it in correctly.

  17. I don't think I ever like the Old Nay holiday ads, I just don't remember them, so maybe I'm indifferent. But I really hate this year's. Been watching a lot of MSNB since the election and it runs often. It's so loud and repetitive and loud! Did I mention it's loud?

  18. Since I began watching Start, I've seen a lot of episodes I missed before in the final and the first seasons. They just started the series over at the beginning recently and it's been interesting. I didn't realize just how big of a$$holes Flynn and Taylor were. It's interesting watching their development through the beginning of The Closer to the end of Major Crimes. And Brenda had their number, she did the "bless your heart" routine that Southern women are so very good at for quite a while with them. And just how cute were Julio and Buzz in the beginning?

  19. add me to the list of people who don't like green bean casserole. I just can't eat green beans. Apparently when I was very little, I loved them and ate them to the exclusion of most everything else (as little kids do).

With the Treetopia ads, if I had a lot more money than I have and a lot, lot more space than I have, I would have several trees, some regular old green ones and some into unusual colors, pink in the doll room, a small turquoise one in my bedroom, something fun in the dining room. I like color. I am not a neutrals person.

  20. DABL is available over the air here and it has it's own Pluto channel. I like it and until Start Channel came here, I watched DABL a lot. One show I saw on there that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is a UK import, 60 Minute Makeover. In some ways, the makeovers are better than I expected for 60 minutes and other ways they are just as bad as you'd expect. They do 3 rooms, often in a flat or a row house and those rooms are small, maybe 10x10. I remember that Trading Spaces didn't want to do houses that didn't have huge rooms. And on 60 Minute Makeover they have 10 or so people working in one of those small rooms at a time. They don't really bite off more than they can chew, paint, fabric, all new furnishings, sometimes carpets, new accessories, new arrangement. Occasionally they do a kitchen and they pretty much replace the entire kitchen. They do have people who go in and do prep before the whistle and that helps them stay in the 60 minutes. But oh, that freaking whistle! It does amuse me that halfway through they stop for a tea break.

I read on one of my doll house/miniature groups that HGTV is going to have a show on making miniatures, yay! But it's a freaking competition show. Why does everything have to be a freaking competition, food shows - they can't just show how to make food, they have to have a freaking competition! Tattoos - they have to have a stupid competition, why? Not that I'd watch that for any reason on earth, but the ads on Pluto drive me crazy. Crafts, they used to have Carol Duvall, she'd have guests and they do the craft. But they just couldn't do a show like that, they had to make it into a stupid competition. So now, they're going to do a show on making miniatures and it has to be a freaking, stupid competition! People won't watch anything but competitions? I won't watch because they are a competition and I love miniatures and would love to watch good mini builders building miniatures. I'd love to see a show on doll houses, I've seen some on some of my groups that are amazing! And there are many scales so there's something for everyone. But they'd probably turn that into some stupid competition! Anyone get the idea I hate competition shows?

  21. Someone above mentioned Escape to the Country. I love this show, I've watched it quite a bit, on DABL, on Roku and I think Prime too. I love the scenery of where they look, I love that they don't want space for "entertaining" and then cut a stalk of celery or a carrot at then end. They don't have to be escrow, in fact many times they don't buy any of the houses. I love the reception rooms that all the houses have, I love that bedrooms are doubles or singles or master. I love that so many of the houses are converted from something else. I love that when they say something like, this is a rather new build, from the 1930s because if it's old, that means 300 or 400 years old but updated in the 1970s or the 1980s.

I watched Sell This House on it's first run through many years ago, and enjoyed it briefly again, but I got so tired of the "people don't know what this space is for" nonsense. According to this show, house buyers are extremely stupid, they cannot decide for themselves what a room is for or see beyond the paint color. It just irritates me and I dislike all the stupid white sheets. I get the decluttering and cleaning, but the open house viewers just gush over the most stupid things. I think they are recruited to say the nastiest bs they can think of in the first viewing and then gush over the changes.

  22. we just got Start in October, I'm loving it. I'm catching up on Cagney and Lacey, haven't seen that forever. Also Medium, Cold Case and in the past couple of days I've seen 2 or 3 episodes of The Closer and Major Crimes that I've missed even with all the viewing I've done of those shows. I watched Ghost Whisperer for a couple of weeks, but I'm tiring of it and I did choose to switch to watch what was happening in the election counting for the past 3 days.

As for there being too many channels catering to women. I don't think so. I dislike Hallmark and Lifetime because of all their stupid sappy movies, WE because of their stupid reality shows and I hate sports. For the last 45 years all weekend on tv was nothing but sports, I'm glad to have good programming that appeals to me that has no effing sports. I'm not all that fond of movies and I can't usually do more than a couple a day. I like the women cop shows.

  23. We got Start channel, I think the first of October, I didn't discover it until about the middle of the month. Now, I'm glued to it most of the day. I love that Major Crimes is on 5 days a week for 2 hour/day. Like others said above, I don't know why it's not on over the weekend except that maybe, here it is part of the Fox digital channels with H&I and MYTV and maybe because it's still being shown on MYTV. COZI was also added, but it took the place of GET which I never watched, there was nothing there I was interested in. The online tv guides have not yet caught up to the changes yet.

Tonight's first episode was Sharon and Andy's wedding. It's so sad/happy. I'm happy for the characters, it was a nice wedding and I love weddings, but it's sad because I know what's coming.
