My television did not tape the full episode due to thunderstorms. From comments I am glad I missed the cemetery scene. In August 2018 my daughter Madison passed away; she was only 12. Seeing that would have upset me in so many ways.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  May Madison’s memory be for a blessing.

Too funny! My husband was a professional bowler when we were first married. We tried to find any evidence of David being a pro, but couldn't find anything on him. I think he was a professional in his own mind.

Just like in his own mind he believes that Lana is madly in love with him and that his black leather coat is fashionable.

With all the shenanigans last night I almost forgot David.  Did anyone else see the flash of anger when she refused to go to his hotel room??  Asking for the "affection he needs" or some such bs; what he's saying is that she's bought and paid for, and she better put out.

I believe in my bones that the man could be dangerous if rejected.  Just like Geoffrey.

    100 percent.  David is terrifying

I love how Ed told his mom the breakup was because Rose wouldn't talk about her past. Ed and Rose solved the issue with "the past" on Day One.  She told him some B.S. about having only one boyfriend before , and he accepted her answer. that's not why they broke up. But basically, Ed told his mom Rose is a slut/whore with a "past" and that's what the breakup was about.

He's not Australian, even though he's been living there like 10-15 years?  I don't know why she'd think this could be resolved in a few months.

When did Varya become such a crazy lady? Was her rejection of his proposal just a power move designed to show him who is the boss and the relationship that backfired terribly? Now she's acting very jealous and entitled for a woman who turned down a dude's proposal.

I didn’t see Varya saying she needed more time as a no.  It was just, slow down, we have only known each other for two weeks.  He gaslit the shit out of her blaming her for ending the relationship when she really didn’t.  That was Geoffrey manipulating her by deliberately misunderstanding what she said to get even with her.  He is such an abusive fuck.

Lana's probably secretly happy that she did not give that creep her real address. His behavior was stalkerish. Vayra must have learned English by listening to Ludacris albums.

I think his behavior is beyond stalkerish.  He strikes me as someone who could absolutely be a rapist.  He feels entitled to what HE wants and cannot bear the idea that Lana is, first of all, a person and second of all, NOT at all into him.  He needs a translator app that simply says, “Stop bothering Lana!”  He is truly frightening.

I never know what to expect from a Ryan Murphy show. Is it going to be a straight up drama, a dramedy, a comedy, a black comedy or just a show where they throw things at a dart board and hope something sticks.

Now that I know that (atm) it's a straight up drama, I should be able to sit back and just chill watching this.

As a first episode it was a little bit slow, especially in introducing our characters but I enjoyed it. I admit I'm slow and didn't see the 'cliffhanger' end of this episode. Poor Jack. But I'm not surprised I missed the outcome of that plot as I was slow with why Jack was visiting that theatre haha.

I've only known Patti LuPone from Broadway recordings and her appearance on Will & Grace so I really only know her acting as the 'over acting' required for the stage. It was really nice to see that she does have 'natural' acting chops in this episode. And I really do have to give Ryan credit for continuing to employ older actors (especially females) with meaty roles. Whatever criticism I have for Ryan's shows that is not one of them.

At the moment, the first episode really didn't present the 'alternate' Hollywood the trailer promised but I guess you need to set up all the characters before that can happen.

I thought Patti LuPone was divine in this.  I have seen her onstage and she is thrilling.

Life Goes On! That's where I grew to love Patti. It was a sweet show.

I also was thrilled to see Alison Wright (The Americans, Sneaky Pete). I haven't seen Jeremy Pope (Archie) in anything before, but damn, he's so charismatic!

I'm not sure what to expect, but I like the foundation so far.

Have you ever her Patti LuPone sing?  If not, do yourself a favor and listen to her sing “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina.” Or anything else!

Rose family's financial situation is seen through American lens and the 90D editors' bent...

No PJs probably producer induced so BigEgo can give her the San Diego tee shirt.

Realistically, her sister has a well stocked shop and her father has own his pedi cart.

Rose's clothes are cute and stylish.

So in relation to others in the neighborhood they are keeping up....

I sure as fuck the wouldn’t want to live like that, and I can’t imagine that she does. American lens or not, she has no indoor plumbing and a concrete floor.  If she is desperate enough to pin her hopes on Big Ed, things are dire,

Who did she dump her kid on while she’s getting to know Ed?
He may not believe her 100% but he’s closer to getting some ass than he has been in all these years, he can always wrap it and get himself checked by a doctor when he returns.

I think her sister is watching Prince.  I feel terribly for her.  Abject poverty is horrendous and most people can never break the cycle.  If she is looking at disgusting Big Ed as a way out, things are very desperate.  Also, I hate Ed with the fire of a thousand suns.

  9. As a Jewish New Yorker, she would have definitely known the song, “White Christmas.”  It is kind of considered an in-joke among us that Irving Berlin managed to write one of the most iconic Christmas songs ever.  It irked me the same way in the first episode that Midge bought the lamb from a non kosher butcher.  It would never happen.  Their research seems convoluted.  As for Benjamin, I knew they wouldn’t end up together because of the episode titled, “Finishing the Hat.”  “Finishing the Hat” is a song about the artist deliberately choosing art over relationships.

Larissa is a bitch. I think even her attorney sensed it. He pretty much told her, watch your temper or you may find yourself heading back to Brazil.

She wasnt even in the country a couple weeks and expecting access to money, credit cards etc. Demanding an expensive car, bigger house etc. Take me shopping, compliment me constantly. She knew within a couple weeks that it was not what she was looking for. Sit down with Colt and tell him, this isn’t going to work for me. I’m sorry but I don’t want to waste your time or money.

There are women who would have been more than happy to be in the situation Larissa found herself.

Having to sit next to Larissa, with her constant primping and ever present cellphone, chauffeuring her around,,,, I’d have put her out of the car too. She was luck Debbie stopped the car first. I would barely have slowed down.

I completely disagree.  Larissa was looking for validation.  And also, yes.  Move out!  Get a car with ac in Las Vegas!  Debbie is Coltee’s real wife and Larissa knows it.  The two of the, have been working on breaking Larissa since she got here.  Coltee exercises power over her by threatening to deport her and we know that Deb is so jealous she could scratch Larissa’s eyes out.  It is an abusive setup and I want to know Larissa is okay.  You might not like her, but she doesn’t deserve what she has gotten, either.

But did she?  I thought what we know is this:  She found the engagement ring from last time (why was she in his things?  Rifling for spare cash?) and was pissed at the ring.  She told her family she did not want to marry him, I am not sure if she told him that.  Yet.

She did.  She also told him if he was moving to Ecuador, it shouldn’t be for her.  So  I have to give her points for honesty.

  13. I read from the show runner that the vow of silence in DC started out as voluntary. He compared it to the burqa where some women wore it voluntarily Nd then everyone else was forced to wear it.  I also wondered if the vow of silence was necessary since the Handmaids are closer to powerful people and could pick up information.

  14. My mom had a strong aversion to butter so she would make the worst cheese sandwiches in the toaster oven and then send them cold for my lunch. One day I went to a friend’s house (these were the days when you could go home for lunch, so I went with my friend).  Her mom offered to warm up my sandwich and she fried it in butter and it was just a transformative miracle.  My eight year old mind just couldn’t understand why my sandwich was now delicious.  The butter aversion remains only with my mother.  The rest of us have been converted.

  15. So I’m confused.  Did Pole not have ALL of his luggage because he NEVER talked about that! I know Karine is disliked in this group, but I do feel sorry for her.  Pole is such a disaster.

Back to Pole- $26k is probably out of reach.  He clearly "ain't right" in the head with seething anger just waiting to explode.  Maybe his poor mother is secretly wishing he would move far, far away.  Why doesn't she just ship his extra crap?

I was also wondering when he was yammering on about needing all this baby stuff..  is this the first baby ever born in Brazil?  Do they all just linger in the womb till their American products show up?

Well, they are unlikely to have that necessity of all necessities: A bulletproof Baby Bjorn.  I don’t know how I got along without one!

Pao is only concerned about Pao.  She up and moved to Miami without Ros (except probably all financed by him) and didn't care if he followed her or not.  She doesn't care what is better for her "little baby" or about compromising on a new city that would suit them both ; she just wants to get her way.

And who could blame her?  I wouldn’t live in Oklahoma for any salary.  Pao was miserable there and it is Russ’ job to make her happy.  He can find similar jobs in Texas, etc.  And it is true that his family completely slut shamed her.  If Pao is the stronger personality in the relationship, that’s fine.  She is just as much as a person as Russ, and I am on her side.

In the book I believe he dies of a "fever". I also think in the book that they discuss the cholera epidemics plaguing Paris. But I think you're right that Marius' treatment of him and being estranged from Cosette is a factor in his death.

I hate hate to think of Jean Valjean dying of cholera, but you are most likely right.  Poor guy, just trying to be good dad.

In the book Marius reluctantly allows Valjean to visit with Cosette but only once a week in a unfurnished basement room.  Marius uses various means to make Valjean's visits less frequent until he doesn't come at all.  In the series they make it look like he was dying six weeks after the wedding.

I think that Valjean dies of a broken heart from losing Cosette.  In the book he is fiercely devoted to her and never wants to lose her.

That was such a horrible scene on how she she had no mental or emotional solace on her last breath (I am also mainly familiar with the musical - is that how it plays out in the novel?).  I know Javert often does not (or ever?) have shades of gray, and would be easy to be one note, but he is more tedious to watch than love to hate watch.  Compare that to the acting of the actors playing the Thenardiers who make there characters much more compelling to watch.

The neighbor lady who reported their location to Javert was a little creepy.  They have done a good job with some of the small parts.

Sadly, that is exactly how it plays out in the novel.
