  1. Every time I see the name, "Donald J. Trump", I just can't help but think the "J" must stand for "Joke". Holy Shit!

And every time I see the name "Hilary", I can't help but think that "Hilarity" or "Bitchary" would be a better choice for her name.

I hate them both. Lord have mercy!

Even worse than having Trump as President are all the nasty homophobes and racists that will be emboldened by this election result. I am so ashamed of this country. America was great.

I hope you can take some solace in the fact that many people would feel the same way - no matter who won.

Sadness and shock beyond all belief.

Later today, I will buy elegant stationery.  I want to write longhand to Secretary Clinton, to Michele Obama and to our  President Obama. They deserve my thanks and gratitude, my respect and honor.

I know I don't have to tell anybody here that within three months after President Lincoln was inaugurated, seven states seceded. The confederacy was formed and a rogue President named. Then...Civil War.  Brother against brother, father, uncle, son, cousin.  All in the name of Slavery, the greatest evil EVER against our brothers and sisters.

Lincoln was an extraordinary man.  His melancholy made him personally fragile, but phenomenally strong outwardly.  Look at his photos during that time.  He seemed to melt, to dissolve.  But his inner turmoil was his outward armor.

He held us together.  He loved us.  He KNEW what he was fighting for.

"With malice toward none, with charity toward all, with firmness in the right as God gave us to see the right...."

When I was little, my parents took me to Ford's Theater, then across the street to see the little bed where Lincoln died. I burst into tears. I felt him and his agony. I imagined his feet hanging off the short bed.

I will take solace that Trump seemed conciliatory tonight...that he did not encourage his audience to chant "lock her up." Or to call for hate against Muslims or Mexicans.

Let's try to be proud, let's try to grit our teeth.  Let's channel President Lincoln. He's our icon, our strength and light.  Help us Abe.  We need you.

My husband and I want to start a family.  Now I won't, and I am bereft.  I'm 33, time is running out for me.  However, I have clients who are the most vulnerable among us.  I will protect them with my life and love, against fear and prejudice.

I can't sleep or concentrate. It bothers me so VERY much that he has the House and Senate on his side!

    Hang in please!

What a lovely post. I wish you well and I wish all Americans the very best of luck with this new president. I have expressed my opinion before. I think both candidates were monstrosities and I fear for the future of the world. But I hope for the best.

In the meantime, I'm going to just hunker down and hold on tight.

Yes I remember the 60's very clearly, but wasn't the political activist I am today, I was too young back then to give a crap about politics. I didn't know or care anything about Canada's politics either frankly. I only know about Pierre Trudeau's son Justin because I saw him on TV one day and thought he was hot. Other than his hotness I don't know a thing about Justin Trudeau.  I watched the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and also that of Elvis Presley. The camera wouldn't even show him from the waist down because his gyrations were too suggestive or provocative. Funny old bugaboos back then.

As you can see, I don't get involved in the politics that don't concern me or my country. I have been active in knowing all I can about each of our candidates for the past two years, so I'm not exactly an impulse voter. My days of debate and discussion about the pros and cons of each candidate ended officially an hour ago when I voted.

I meant to add 'ALISHIBAZ' that if Donald Trump wins the election today that I'll make a trade with you, Justin Trudeau for Donald Trump.  Deal?

I would counter your offer with the following, "Would you take them both? Please, take them both? Please? Please? Please?

If so, you can take Hilarity as well. Please?

  5. HumblePi,

I can certainly appreciate the sentiments of your opinion.

I would ask you to try and cast your mind back to the mid 60s. I don't know if you were alive during that time. But, there was a wave of feeling back then known as "Beatlemania" and it described the feeling that many people had in appreciation of the music of The Beatles. There was also another phenomenon prevelant in Canada called "Trudeamania". Any chance you may have remembered that?

What does that have to do with today's US election? Well, our current Prime Minister is the son of a politician named Trudeau who was Prime Minister back then and he was the center of this feeling called "Trudeaumania".

My opinion is definitely in the minority here. But I think much of the reason our current PM was elected was because:

    1) He is the son of the PM back in the 60s who was mighty popular - especially with the female voters. Many of them seemed to have serious romantic interests in him.

    2) He is said to be an extremely attractive man and some people claim the reason he was elected had much to do with the fact that many female voters voted for him - largely because of his looks.

My opinion is that our current PM is a real "flake". I know that opinion is definitely in the minority here. But, I can't see anything he has done since he came into office that would improve the fortunes of our country.

I really don't want to get into a debate with anyone here as to the pros and cons of either or both of your current Presidential hopefuls. But from what I've seen in the news, they both strike me as terrible candidates as well as terrible people. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any US presidents since JFK that I would describe as truly "presidential" in nature. I really don't think that I'm sufficiently well informed to offer any good opinions about the nature of your presidents since JFK. But I would very much like to provide you with a link here to a PBS documenary that described both candidates. If you have not yet seen this, I would just like to say that I found it truly horrifying.

The program was Frontline "The Choice" Sept. 27, 2016. I would very much like to hear any of your opinions about the facts presented in this program. The producers seemed to offer the opinion that both candidates are either crazy or just big liars and if they run the nation like they have run their personal lives, we can all expect a huge disaster.

As far as Canadians having any interest or opinion in the US election. It is often said that when the USA sneezes, Canada gets a cold. It is very rare that any one country is so dependant on the actions of another that events considered to be "minor" in one country produces "major" effects in the other. For that reason, I believe that most Canadians really need to take a serious interest in events that occur in America - especially US presidential elections. Here is a link to that Frontline documentary: I hope you enjoy it.

  6. I just want to ask God to please have mercy on the USA once this election is over. I fear that no matter who wins, the US is likely doomed to suffer from either of these two horrible egomaniacs. I want to ask God who else will protect this world from hateful dictators who would be happy to make war and exterminate all kinds of people based on their race?

The USA was originally created by people who were fed up with being persecuted and abused by a kingdom who really cared nothing for human rights.

It seems to me that either one of Clinton or Trump will be far worse than any previous monstrosity the world has ever known. I can't understand how the people in the USA could ever elect either Clinton or Trump to be president when both of them seem to be such horrible, (list of most every terrible adjective in the dictionary).

I surely do feel the free world will be pretty much doomed if either of these two monsters become President.

Oh, Dear Lord. Please save us. Please. Please. Please.

I imagine Hannah started out just talking to Bret (remember, she's from Boston too), but the cop vibes didn't mesh with her idea of funeral director, so she started asking questions. Why? You probably want to know if someone is lying to you. It's good info to have. And if it makes someone else a bigger target than you or you can use that information, you do.

I don't think it was benevolent, but it wasn't really malicious either. Strategic, sure, but not really mean-spirited, IMO. As AliShibaz stated, a neutral action in the game of Survivor.

I will have to respectfully disagree with Ali (Hope I can call you that!) that Hannah's badgering of Zeke and Adam was morally bad and performed with evil intent toward them. It was stupid. It was socially and emotionally oblivious. It was an epic clash of different communication styles and emotional needs. But I do honestly think that Hannah, at that point, was very upset at the vote and felt she needed to explain and she needed reassurance. Zeke felt he needed to go off and process. Adam appeared to be almost trying to translate Zeke for Hannah ("He isn't saying he'll never talk to you. He just can't right now. He wants to be left alone."), and IMO he had the right idea but was stuck with two people who handle emotions very differently pretty much right after something went down.

There are interesting theories and research about gender, communication, and values. While I highly dislike saying "This is how men communicate..." (or women) because there are so many exceptions, I find trends and theories helpful in analyzing interactions. You can look at Hannah's conversation with Zeke/Adam as Zeke and Adam having just lost status within the tribe, and they did not want to talk about it with someone responsible right then. Hannah, though, just had to choose between two sets of relationships and is trying to communicate for emotional reasons. It is very upsetting for her to potentially lose two friends, so she can't walk away without trying to fix it even though she's making it worse. They're all focused on their own needs.

After reading your post, I've decided that you are correct and I was wrong to judge Hannah to be acting with evil intentions when she badgered Zeke. I'm perfectly willing to accept that she was being stupid more so than evil.

You made a good persuasive post.

Also, thanks to Green and MissEwa.

Asking him about his job was targeting him and a bad action she deserves future punishment for?

You question whether asking Brett about his job was targeting him. I thought her intent was clear. I thought it was to target Brett and have him voted out.  Are you seriously unsure that asking Brett about his job was targeting him?  She seemed to be planting the seeds to have Brett voted out and since several other players began to discuss voting him out after discussions with her, I think it's very clear that Hannah is trying to have him voted out.

Do you see her questioning Brett as something that she did with benevolent motives towards him? Or do you think she was trying to have the rest of the players know he was a cop so that they could all appreciate Brett and welcome him into their alliance? I think her intent is to have him voted out. Do you really think she has friendly intentions towards Brett?

Switching gears, I never said that was a bad action on Hannah's part. I think it was a part of the game and I would characterize that action as "neutral" since everyone present had signed up to play this game and they all are aware the motto is "Outwit, Outlast, Outplay". Trying to have other players voted out is not generally seen as a morally "harmful" or "beneficial" act. Seems to me that is just part and parcel of the way this game is played. You know, "Outwit, Outlast, Outplay".

However, I don't mind telling you my true feelings about this. I think Hannah has definitely engaged in other morally bad actions. Bad actions that were truly nasty and performed with evil intent towards others. Specifically, badgering Zeke and Adam (I think it was Adam) despite their many, many protestations they did not want to discuss the matter at that time was a much better example of one of Hannah's bad actions.

I suppose you might conclude that she did not act with evil intent by badgering them. Despite the fact they repeatedly told her they did not want to discuss the matter and repeatedly asked her to stop bothering them, she just didn't realize they did not want to discuss the matter with her. Surely that is not your conclusion. Is it?

I would be certain that you could not have concluded that she was acting with some positive and caring "good intent" when she was behaving the way she did. Is that your conclusion?

Awww. I know lots of people dislike Hannah, but I have a soft spot for her. Her questioning of Bret was funny as hell. I like seeing a mix of people on Survivor, including those awkward, neurotic people who know they are and go for it anyways. To me, that takes guts.

That's one of the things I like most about this season. There are a lot of very different people, but they're all trying to find ways to connect to each other. There's no one I really actively disliked.

    <snip>

I want to say I found it very interesting that out of all the players this season, Hannah chose to target Brett - both in public and in private.  Seems to me that is quite a rare kind of event. I would guess that most people who actively target someone, do it in either public or private - but very rarely is it done i both ways. Hannah must have a very big (I was going to say "hard-on" but I can't find any kind of simile that fits and most any other words or phrases just make me sound dumb).

I found that development to be fairly ironic because Brett was the one person who comforted Hannah and stayed with her and tried to help her when she suffered her mysterious attack (I have quite a few synonyms for the name of that attack. But they all make me look very mean-spirited).

I've recently discovered the Eastern concepts of kharma and dogma. Kharma seems to mean that every living person receuves consequences for every action they perform - both good and bad consequences for both good and bad actions. Seems to me that describes the world as a very fair place. But, this world sure doesn't seem like a very fair place to me. Of course, that may just be due to my self-centered nature.

I hope future events will clearly demonstrate just how much Hannah prefers to choose good actions over bad actions or vice versa. I just wonder if people can ever be certain they know the truth about what kind of actions other people choose and what kind of consequences they received for those actions. I have a feeling that we are probably not entitled to learn just what consequences people had to endure for what actions.

Where did they get the girl who played teenaged Geena Davis? She really looked like she could have been Geena Davis 35 years ago. Was that maybe her real-life daughter, or CGI?

Does anyone remember in either the book or the movie, was Regan's mother an actress? I didn't remember that part.

I don't know if it was the one-week break or if the show just improved but I'm liking it much better now.

I'd love to hear from one or more of the producers or other insiders if that could lead to an understanding of just how and why they planned for this show to change so sharply after the first five episodes. I'd really like to understand just what they were thinking. Whoever or whatever is responsible, IMHO, they deserve a big round of applause.

  13. Wow! I'm having difficulty trying to find the words to express my thoughts and feelings.

I watched the first five episodes - mostly out of curiosity - but also because except for Survivor, there seems to be very little else on TV that is holding my interest these days. I thought this show rated about 6 on the scale from 1 to 10. But after watching this most recent episode, it seems to me the show has instantly ramped up from 6 to about 9 or 9.5.

I never really liked Sharon Gless. I always found her to be kind of ugly and it surprised me that she was cast in some roles that presented her as a supposedly attractive lady. Of course, it's not at all reasonable to base opinions about someone's acting based on their s physical appearance. But I also found her acting style and abilities to be equally awful.

After watching this most recent episode, I feel like I owe Sharon Gless a big apology. Or maybe she just suddenly became a much better actor during the approximately 20 years since I last saw her perform in anything. But, I thought she was absolutely terrific in this episode. I also thought Geena Davis was equally terrific and the scene between the two of them was a great example of superb acting (at least in my flawed opinion of their acting skills).

It seems to me the writers and producers took a big gamble and sharply raised the stakes by taking this show far, far away from the mundane. I think it was a huge gamble. People could easily have concluded the show was just some kind of joke and they could have just laughed at it. But if you're going to present a horror story, why not go "all out" and present some incredibly scary scenario? Bottom line? I loved it! If they can maintain this degree of excellence, I think this show could easily become one of my most favorites in a very long time.

I was very surprised when I looked at this thread for the first time. There were only about 30 responses to this thread (about Episode 6) which indicates the show is not really very popular. I sure do wish I could send a message to all the members of this board and advise them there is something very special going on with this show and if they don't bother watching, they run the risk of missing out on something that is quite superb.

Now, given all of that, I sure would like to ask for some help in trying to understand what is going on in terms of the background mythology or theory of the Catholic religion - specifically as it relates to angels and demons as well as Satan and this group of friars "The Friars of Ascension".

I know almost nothing about this mythology. Can anyone post a brief explanation of what they think is going on with demonic possession and Exorcism?

Who or what is this group of friars? Are they supposed to be something like a witches coven? Are they essentially Satan worshipers? Should we expect the remainder of this season to develop into a struggle between a group of demons versus the two Exorcists (Marcus and Thomas)? If not, where do you think the tension that will produce the entertainment will come from?

I've never had much respect or admiration for the  Catholic church. I tend to think of them as a bunch of frauds who really belong in a prison on a long term basis. For me, it began with all the child pedophelia committed by Catholic priests and worse than that - much, much worse - it seems to me the Catholic church tried to cover that all up in order to protect their position in society (at least what they may perceive that is). Even worse, it seems to me they tried to protect their financial position. They really never seemed to care at all about the health or welfare of their parishioners. Worse, they never seemed to place any value on the welfare of their souls. They just talked about their souls. They never went out of their way to protect them. This all fits in quite well with my feelings of contempt towards the church. I have always considered them to be a big fraud that just tried to grab as much money as they can lay their hands on and spin a stupid stories about angels and devils to innocent dupes. I truly despise various religious frauds who take advantage of innocents.

Can anyone offer an opinion as to what they think is going on here? There has been much talk about someone who is "coming". At first I thought they meant the Pope was coming to Chicago or maybe some high level member of the church. But after this episode, I'm guessing they may have actually been talking about the return of Satan or some other individual or group of demons. Are demons the same kind of beings as fallen angels?

I'd really like to understand more about what is going on here. But I don't seem to be able to even figure out what kind of questions I should ask.  In the meantime, I'd sure like to recommend that people who have not yet seen this show watch a few of these episodes. I think they will be in store for some great entertainment experiences. This show is just so very much better than I could have ever imagined it would become.

Please vote out Hannah, I really don't like her, the panic attack or whatever you call it and I got super annoyed when Michaela was voted out and she was saying "whaaatttt?!"

It seemed to me that at that TC, Hannah felt compelled to talk and talk and talk about why Michaela was voted out. Much like the way she badgered Zeke and (Sorry. I forget who was with Zeke that night).  I get the feeling that she might have spoken up and wouldn't shut up at that time and the producers had to force her to shut up. Or maybe she was just too afraid to try to badger others while Probst was there?

I get the feeling there could very well have been more of Hannah's badgering and we just weren't shown it.  I find her to be one hundred times more annoying than Michaela ever was.  If she should win this season, I'm guessing they will have to change the show's motto from, "Outwit, Outlast, Outplay" to "OutBadger, OutAnnoy, OutNeurotic".

Well, they didn't do anything that we saw. Doesn't mean they didn't make an attempt. But really, what could they have done? They were out-numbered 2 to 4. Their best bet would have been for Bret to ask the guys to keep him around instead of Sunday and for Sunday to ask the girls to keep her around instead of Bret. That was probably their best option. (And, for all we know, voting out Michaela might have been their idea.)

I initially found her irritating but grew to enjoy her as entertainment. She made several comments that cracked me up. However, I tend to agree with your assessment, and probably wouldn't want to be friends with her in real life, or have to work with her. She seems like a very abrasive personality. Your description is apt - I've know people like that too. "I'm just keeping it real" - an excuse to tell people off. She lacks tact. She just doesn't see any value in it. Hopefully she's learned a lesson.

I believe the reason he gave for choosing "funeral director" as a phony profession was that it's the kind of profession that doesn't invite a lot of questions. Which sounds logical, but I guess he didn't bank on being stuck with someone like Hannah.

Very well said. I feel you deserved more than just a "like" for this post.  I don't recall ever reading any of your posts before and I enjoyed this one very much.

No. I think you are correct. There are indeed a lot worse insults than "silly".

I just wonder why production would show that clip if it wasn't important.  They don't usually show "throw away" clips. Although, in this case, I suppose they may have deliberately thrown in some kind of wild goose to prevent the audience from finding ways to predict what will happen.

I may very well have over-reacted to that clip and I could easily be completely wrong as to its significance.

Like most of the other people who have posted into this thread, I have to agree this has been one of the most exciting and one of the very best seasons of this show I've ever seen. Seems pretty clear the producers of this show keep learning and improving the show as they go along. I still have many complaints about Probst and the way he influences the outcomes of the votes. But overall, I'm very happy that I didn't just give up on this show when I felt it was the right thing to do.

I don't actually, remind me?  When was that?

It was at the beginning of Episode 6 - about one minute into the show. Zeke was having a confessional and he said words to the effect,

"Tribal was such a delight because those "silly Gen-Xers" sent home one of their own on the one tribe they had the numbers. Now all of a sudden, I seem to be in a power position with Chris and I'm so stoked. I'm a brand new baby in this game."

Seems to me that a very common happening on this show is when one of the players starts ridiculing players on another tribe or bragging about how great their tribe is playing or talking about what a great position they are in ... that often signals their impending demise.

Zeke was not only laughing at the Gen-X people. He was talking about what a great position he was now in. I kind of figured he would be leaving - if not during that episode, then very soon.  I think he has a very unrealistic attitude and I expect he will be leaving soon. But, in this game, all kinds of surprises abound.

I have picked Chris as the big winner this season. I don't think Zeke has what it takes to outwit Chris. Of course, Zeke may always win. But I'll be very surprised if he does.  Chris is a criminal defense attorney.  I think that means he has to outwit many other very clever people in order to make his living. I don't believe Zeke is anywhere close to being as clever as Chris.

However, to be fair, when it comes to predicting who will win and who will lose, I am almost always wrong. But, that is part of the fun of the Survivor fandom.

Still, I'd be interested to know what you think Zeke's chances are?  Do you agree with some of the other people who figure he will win the million dollars?

People in this forum have said 'the show is racist', I think.

I agree the show displays dynamics of sexism and racism but I don't think it's shitty to watch.  Looking away is shitty.  It's a real thing, why not explore it.

I do think overall though that tribe dynamics are mostly driven by non-racial things, especially past the initial days.  I have a feeling things get real out there quick, in those conditions.  Humans and even other species are always going to be more drawn toward others that are like themselves, though.  It's just biology.  Being aware of your natural (as in from nature) biases and intellectually interceding is what we do or at least should aim for.

Michaela was a poor sport; who are you saying in the history of Survivor had a less graceful, more bitter exit?  Once someone is a poor sport, you're entitled to give as well as you get.  You're also entitled to imagine what you'd do, what you'd even like to do... but not do it.  See, that's maturity and wisdom: recognizing that we have thoughts in our head, but we don't always have to say these things. You see it in Survivor all the time: the people who just can't help spouting off their opinions, and losing the game because of it.  Michaela did it, others have done it, while successful players often just nod and smile, nod and smile.

Me personally, if I blindsided someone and they acted like Michaela did, I might very well point out "Well, you have no power here, so rant all you want, you still gotta leave".  Because it's true, and it feels good to knock the wind out of some pompous ass's sails, like Jay did to Michaela by not being some pushover blubbering forgive-bot when she confronted him.  He's also free to say nothing else, which is the tack I likely would have chosen... but in my head, or as a non-participant on these forums, I'd sure be throwing some fierce shade!

Well said. I respect your position.

HA HA HA HA well ding dong, the witch is dead.  Michaela was just the epitome of class as she left, eh?  That was among the top 5 poorest examples of sportsmanship in being booted I've ever seen on Survivor; a less graceful exit doesn't come immediately to mind, but I'm sure they exist.  I'm sure she'll do great in life believing that everyone around her exists solely to boost up her own success.  Seriously, blindside or no, that was some shitty, mean-spirited, attitude and aggressive body language; hell, when she went back for her shoes I thought for sure she was going to punch Jay.  I loathed Abi in S31: Second Chances, and consider her a mentally ill person who should not have been on the show; yet even Abi accepted her blindside with some grace.

So I have to praise Jay for actually realizing "Hm, maybe now is the time to do this", and Brett and Sunday totally played their parts well in acting as if they were just glumly waiting for the guillotine to fall.  And major props to Jay for staring her down: I'd have been sorely tempted to mention "Well, you won't even make the jury, so I don't give a crap what you think of me.  Bye bye now".

I can't resist pointing out how much venom you seemed to spit at Michaela for being a "poor sport". But then you come out with this?  Don't you think people might wonder how you can criticize Michaela on the one hand and then tell us how you'd like to act out in a way that would make you an even worse sport?

I cannot disagree with you. Yes. It was poor sportsmanship. But how important do you think it is to act like a good sport after people have lied to you and betrayed you?  The other side of the coin is that no one can ever call Michaela a "phoney".  Heh. Heh. Heh.

I would not have begrudged her being a whole lot more direct in telling Jay what she thought of him.

Funny because Zeke is my pick to win the whole thing.

He recovered nicely with the tribal swap and has pretty strong connections with both Chris and David now to add to his Adam one.  Heck David even told him about his idol.  And through them he has semi-connections now with Ken and Jessica as well as Brett and Sunday.  And even screwed over Hannah will likely want to join his "side."  They all form a very loose alliance against the now Michaela-shieldless Jay Gang.  (Yes Jay, YOU are now the face of that alliance and everyone will be targeting you first last and foremost and your idol can only save you once).

Anyway Zeke sits like a spider at the center of all these web of people vs The Jay Gang.  And he will not be seen as an immunity threat.  He will totally fall under the radar for some time to come.  He is good to go for a long time in this game unless he suddenly freaks out and goes crazy or gets injured or something.  He is not on anyone's radar to vote out and has strong allies in David, Chris and Adam and through them with all the others.

So we got The Jay Gang of Jay, Will and probably Taylor and possibly Michelle.  Though Michelle could see the writing on the wall and try and make side deals with her latest tribe members.

We have the Gen-Xer's who should be smart enough to set any differences aside enough to take out at least one if not two of the above before they start attacking each other.

And we have Zeke, Adam and now screwed over Hannah seeing openings more with the Gen-Xers.  Once The Jay Gang is honed down some then all the marbles start to roll around and anything can happen which means that Zeke, Adam and Hannah won't just be at the bottom of some Revenge of the Gen-Xers scenario alliance. And of the three, Zeke has his hands in the most pots of possible mini-alliances.

Of course if Jessica and her paranoia screw things up all bets are off.  Though I don't see how simple-minded Taylor will remain "loyal" to her once the merge happens and he can go back to his home boy, Jay.

I respect your opinion that Zeke will win the whole thing.  My opinion is that Chris will likely win. But you know what they say about opinions. Survivor is often full of surprises.

But I don't understand why it appears that you are quoting yourself without adding any new text. Am I missing something (that is very possible)? Or did you make some kind of mistake?
