I am a bit amused at how some people say that these political differences should not affect friendships or family relationships. How can they not? To me, this is not like the debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan or John McCain and Barack Obama. I will never understand how people can give their vote to someone who calls white supremacists "very fine" people, with someone who laughs at an 80 year old man nearly being killed by a lunatic with a hammer, with someone who has repeatedly assaulted women, with someone who calls those killed while wearing the uniform of my country suckers, with someone who called January 6, 2021 a day of love, with someone I believe is totally devoid of integrity, honesty, compassion, and decency.

I'm wondering how many of the things Trump talked about will actually happen. Tariffs for example. Aren't there some Republicans in Congress who have the common sense to realize the negative economic impact that would have?
I am sure that shortly after January 20 they will reintroduce the immigration bill, that one that was a bipartisan effort, the one that Trump had killed, and claim a huge victory. Why wasn't Trump asked every day during the campaign if issues at the border are so crucial, why did he use his influence to kill this bill so that another couple of years went by without needed resources?
I have a friend who is terrified her son is going to lose his health insurance. He doesn't have a job that offers those benefits, so he has obtained insurance because of the ACA. I have a relative who has two kids in their early 20s who are still on her insurance, one of whom has a pre-existing health issue, a genetic eye condition that has required surgery in the past and will require ongoing care. What's going to happen to these young people if they get rid of the ACA? I have many friends and relatives who have daughters and granddaughters, who are terrified that a miscarriage will result in their death because of Trump abortion bans. I am a cancer survivor. What will happen to my ability to retain my health insurance?

This. But also for all the Republican's crying about the unfairness of the 'lamestream' media they, for the most part totally sanewashed Trump. I don't know how much difference it would have made but if the only people (aside from his followers) were seeing and hearing most of his speeches at his rallies were watching Colbert or MSNBC then that wasn't good enough.
When the people in the media who most closely fact check and question Trump's statements and policies are the late night hosts, there's a problem.

I have so many feelings - anger, disgust, sorrow, and fear. I don't know if America, the Constitution, and my heart can survive another four years of this. And now he has the Senate, most likely the House, and the Supreme Court.
Another four years of being embarrassed to admit I'm from Wisconsin. Our incumbent senator barely won her race by the closest margin she's had and this was the first race when the opponent made an issue of her being gay loudly and clearly in ads, by claiming her partner is a conflict because she works on Wall Street. And her opponent is a millionaire banker who only lives part-time in Wisconsin.
I'm thinking of Harris and her husband having to welcome Vance and his wife to the VP's residence for the traditional tour. Can you imagine having to be nice to someone who called you trash? And I'm still waiting to hear the outrage from people about the Republican candidate saying he's going to have to "hit" a former First Lady.
I hope all the people agonizing over the cost of eggs enjoy paying for things when the tariffs are imposed. Look at the labels on your clothes - how many of them are made in America? Where's that new furnace or refrigerator you need being manufactured? Or the parts for your car? How about your TV? Phone? Computer?

I find a lot of recipes are poorly written. For example, step 1 is cooking the pasta, but if you think about it, you realize the sauce won't be finished for an hour, so cooking the pasta first makes no sense. In my 20's, on my own for the first time, I had a few disasters as I figured this out. Also, too many recipes underestimate the prep time. For example, they'll say 10 minutes and over 30 minutes later I'm still chopping up vegetables. I don't think many include true prep time - for example, they just count the actual minute you're chopping the onion, not the time you spent peeling it/preparing it to be chopped. Nor do they count the time to assemble the ingredients, pots/pans, and utensils you need. I agree with those who have said this is important to do. You don't want to get 30 minutes into the preparation of something to realize you're out of oregano or you forgot to put tomato paste on the grocery list.

Before the Jets' first offensive drive ended! Those poor fans - promised a savior and getting this. But hey, I'm sure Rodgers is loading up on the cayenne pepper water in the locker room, so all will be fine in the second half.

Many years ago, I lived in a neighborhood with lots of little kids, which was fun on Halloween. I usually bought about 10 bags of candy. One year the weather was terrible throughout the Midwest. Driving rain and 60 mph winds. I had all this candy and no one was out. (I bought early, to get the good stuff, before I knew what the weather would be like.) But suddenly my doorbell rang and there was a very determined little boy who lived a few houses away, with a costume on under a raincoat, holding up a large plastic bag. He and his father, who was accompanying him, were completely soaked. I said here you go, and I dumped my entire bowl of candy into his bag. His dad later told me they only went to a few houses since just about everyone did what I did and the little guy was very satisfied with how heavy his bag was. He was 5 years old, was so excited about Halloween, and was devastated when initially his parents said he couldn't go out. His dad said they would have to remember to tell him the following Halloween that he wouldn't get that much candy at each house. I had at least 3 bags of candy in that bowl!
I remember that a lot of my co-workers brought in bags of candy that year; it lasted past Thanksgiving. I brought in the rest of my supply, except for the mini Snickers. Those went in my freezer. And the Skittles - those I kept for when my nieces and nephews came to my house.

Living in Wisconsin, we often had our winter coats on under our costumes. There were two houses we had to go to. One owned by a dentist who gave out toothbrushes (boo! but my mom wanted us to get those free toothbrushes) and then the one house where they gave out full-size candy bars. I remember being confused as a 6 or 7 year old by some comment my dad made about how they could afford it because they had everybody's money. Why did they have everybody's money? Because they owned the local liquor store!

Several years ago, my company informed me they had canceled my card because of some breach and a new one was on its way to me. One week later, they started sending me emails telling me I needed to activate my new card. After four consecutive days of these emails, I called and told them I would love to activate the new card but had not received it. They told me to contact them if I didn't receive it in the next two days and they would overnight one to me. I suggested relying on the US Postal Service to send new cards, which has been so damaged by mismanagement and political interference, was not the best decision.
I recently got a new card for my primary credit card since the expiration date was September 2024. It's the card I use for several monthly charges - two newspapers, two streaming services, my cell phone, etc. What a pain to go on all these sites to update the card. And I couldn't just change the expiration date. For all of them, I had to enter a new payment method as if I had completely changed everything.

The only one of those diseases I got was chickenpox, so I've had the shingles vaccination. I know several people who have had terrible bouts of shingles and I don't want to go through that.

The two girls were at fault, but IMO the adult who was driving like a maniac after them during a time when so many people, especially children, were in the area, bears the greater responsibility for the accident. I questioned the thought of directing the girls to a police station, which immediately became a moot point when the principal crashed his car, and wondered if perhaps a better solution was for them to stop the car, keep the windows up and the doors locked, do not engage with the other driver, and wait for the police to show up. However, after thinking about it, I realized the 911 center people didn't know if the driver chasing them was armed, and in 2024 America, you probably have to assume they are.
That teacher in the classroom needs to find a new line of work. Incompetent, ineffective, just giving up? I couldn't believe the entire class wasn't taking advantage of her.

I agree, even if the call had been made, the Vikes still had to go about 80 yards to score in less than 2 minutes without any timeouts and get a 2 point conversion. Minnesota should be focusing on their offense only getting 2 field goals in the second half and how their secondary allowed Stafford & the Rams to carve them up.

Wow, what was that official looking at? He was right behind Darnold as the defender tried to do a 180 with his head. Not one official saw that?
As a Packers fan, I should enjoy watching this happen to the Vikes. But I know our turn will come. Every team in the league will get screwed by the officials at some point this season.

I really love Kyra and her relationship with Elsbeth, so I'm hoping they are not sidelining her. If it's only 2 courses, I do think it's likely they will have an investigation of some sort flare up at wherever she's taking courses. Maybe she will stumble on something that otherwise wouldn't have come to Elsbeth's notice.
Will Kaya be taking classes at Hudson University? Isn't that place a hotbed of homicide?

That was Hector Moya, the cartel guy Mickey talked to in the prison kitchen. He was in prison for killing Glory Days but was freed when they realized he didn't do it. I loved that he promised to make sure that no one from the other cartel was going to be able to harm Mickey or his staff and family. Always good to have a friend with "connections." The picture of DeMarco was a bit of proof that Moya had those connections.
He wasn't in prison for killing Glory Days (Gloria Dayton). That's who Julian was on trial for killing. Moya was in prison on drug charges and a gun charge that increased his sentence to life, but he claimed that DeMarco had planted the gun. That was the whole point of the habeas claim, that he was wrongfully convicted. It was not made clear, but I'm assuming Moya's conviction (and possibly many others) was thrown out when DeMarco's corruption was revealed. At the very least, probably the gun enhancer was tossed, so perhaps Moya had served his time on the drug charges? But one tainted charge very likely taints all the charges.

I'm not sure on California law on victims' rights, but I wonder if Andrea failing to notify the victim that the offender was being released is more than just something that could get her and the DA's office sued. Did she violate California law? Also, doesn't the DA's office have victim services personnel? There should be someone assigned to a violent crime case such as this. Ultimately, it's the prosecutor's responsibility, but having a victim services provider gives a "belts and suspenders" approach. And Andrea's boss covering it up? Yeah, that always works out. In a case like this, there would be a public outcry by victims' rights organizations and demands to know how this could have happened.
Would Moya and/or Mickey be so stupid as to have Mickey's bodyguard be someone who is in the country illegally? Why are they providing DeMarco with this ammunition?

I also really like Kate Atkinson. She's one of my favorites.
I'm about 100 pages into Michael Connelly's latest, The Waiting. It's a Renee Ballard book, but Harry (and Maddie) Bosch appear in it. Elly Griffith's collection of short stories, The Man In Black and other Stories, is waiting for me at the library, so that will be next.

I remember doing the big lever thing (after you flipped the small levers to indicate your choices) in my first few elections but probably was doing the fill in and electronic scan by the late 80s? Early 90s? I vote in every election, not just presidential elections, so there are a lot to remember!
I used to vote at a church where the church members would hold an Election Day bake sale. They probably made a mint, especially from those of us who voted at 7:00 a.m.

18 minutes ago, Carey said:The thing I was talking about was Mike Tomlin benching a winning QB for an old QB that can't move as much anymore. People have been irate at the fact that Coach T can wreck the franchise and face no consequences, whereas everyone else gets nailed for less. Or for nothing in this case. First time a QB with a winning record gets pulled for no reason, and he's not even hurt
The climate in Pittsburgh is rather cold. The fans are upset that Mike got another contract extension following a period where he should've been let go. In that period, they've finished in a spot that didn't exist 5 years ago for the postseason. Lack of success and no standards anymore. Shows that the owner is actually lazier than Jerry Jones.
LOL - that is most definitely NOT what I was talking about.
On another topic, I am amused at the very strong feelings some have expressed on social media about the Packers' unis today - the all white with the white helmets. There's a small but very vocal contingent that seems to believe going to white helmets is the equivalent of spitting on the logo at mid-field. As alternate uniforms go, I've seen a lot worse.

I too am one of those who likes to vote on Election Day. I'm old enough to remember the voting machines where I pulled the big lever, heard that Ker-Chunk sound, and by golly, I really felt like I had voted. To me, it was the music of democracy. Now it's like a flashback to taking the SAT as I fill in the little circles.
However, voting on Election Day means canvassers continue to come to my door and I've been told that will stop if I vote early. And as I get older, I will have to vote as soon as I possibly can, only because I will be afraid of dying before Election Day.

Just now, Carey said:I guess the good thing is preserving life, since it's possible that I'll need a ton of alcohol myself to get through the NFL, let alone Sunday Night Football. By the way, Calvada, A-Rod isn't even the top story, and some people might need more than mute and the booze.
It figures that Kansas City is the last team standing in terms of winning & losing. First that, and then Daniels goes down ahead of Chicago/Washington next week. We can't have nice things, ever.
Though the interesting thing about that first part is that despite the fact that this is the fourth time in the past decade and a half that KC has been the last team to lose a game, that hadn't happened since Patrick's first year in the league.
Great games in the NFC North this afternoon though!
Yes, I am VERY aware. But we're not supposed to mention those things on Primetimer! I just hope they've got extra security on the two locker rooms following the game.
Chit-Chat: The Feels
in Everything Else
Now that I have had a few days to deal with my sorrow and disappointment, the following is what I am thinking about:
In the aftermath of 2020 election, the incumbent refused to acknowledge he lost; he refused to engage in the transition of power at a time when there was a worldwide pandemic; his followers conspired to have fake electors file false electoral ballots; he incited a mob that resulted in an attack at the U.S. Capitol that caused deaths, injuries to law enforcement, and the desecration of the Capitol with weapons and feces; he shrugged off reports that the mob he incited was seeking his Vice President in order to hang him; and he refused to attend the inauguration of his successor.
Following the 2024 election, none of these things will happen. There will be no Democratic-led criminal conspiracies to overturn the results of the election, the transition will be held in an orderly manner with integrity and civility, and there will not be riots and violent mobs incited by Joe Biden or Kamala Harris.
