  1. I guess for me the stuff that gets me is show original stuff that I don't expect. Or something that is more about performance than words.

Example of the former is Thoros describing bringing back Beric.

Thoros of Myr:  It's a terrible thing to say, but... by the time I came to Westeros, I didn't believe in our Lord. I decided that He, that all the gods, were stories we told the children to make them behave. So I wore the robes, and every now and then, I'd recite the prayers. It was just for show. A spectacle for the locals. Until the Mountain drove a lance through this one's heart.
    [Thoros points at Beric]
Thoros of Myr: I knelt beside his cold body, and said the old words. Not because I believed in them, but... he was my friend. And he was dead. And they were the only words I knew. And for the first time in my life, the Lord replied.

I never really cared for the Brotherhood without Banners in the books but this scene was really touching to me.

Example of the latter is Arya about to throw away Needle.

I knew she wouldn't do it but my god seeing her face wrecked me inside.

  2. I feel like this show is custom tailored for my enjoyment. It hits on a lot of things on my checklist.

    • D'Fwan and Jenna (two of my favorites from 30 Rock)
    • 90s references
    • Jokes at the expense of the uber rich
    • Jokes at the expense of Indiana
    • Interracial couples
    • Spanish jokes.

I really enjoyed the season as a whole and look forward to what they come up with next, but I agree that the last few episodes were a little shakey. I mostly blame it on Randy. All of his plotlines seemed so out of tone with the rest of the show. There's cartoonish and then there's saturday morning cartoonish. I hope they scale him back like they scaled back Rachel Dratch's characters on 30 Rock.

Also. Although I'm straight, I definitely learned that "straight guys don't sit next to each other in movies" thing until my 20s.

  3. Oh god I hope they have a Dazzler cameo. There's something about her that I've always enjoyed. Her irrepressible confidence despite looking ridiculous in public was always endearing to me. She's like a comic book version of Taylor Swift. Also her outfits are super fun.

  4. Ok Royals. You eliminated the A's from the post season. I can handle that. No hard feelings.

However, if you allow the Giants to win the World Series, there will be no forgiveness. I've had to suffer through two WS parades here and my heart can't take a third.

  5. I was watching Gilmore Girls yesterday and I loved this Lorelai quote

LORELAI: Oh, no, no, no, Liza, pizza is not below me. Believe me, I love pizza. I eat tons of pizza. It's one of my four major food groups: candy, popcorn, and pizza – see? It's two of my food groups, that's how much I love pizza.

I also voted for all three because I pretty much enjoy all pizza(to varying degrees) with a few exceptions. Like Little Caeser's.

  6. There is something immensely satisfying in the late game of FFXII where you have all your gambits set up just right for that area and just walk through it destroying everything without having to enter commands.

  7. One of my friends introduced me to his deciding factor on getting a console. Do not purchase unless console cost <= the total cost of the games you want on it.

XboxOne and PS4 aren't even coming close to reaching that tipping point. We'll see what else they have when Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 finally come out.

  8. You think you feel bad?  Try being a Redskins fan.  Yeah, that's right.  I said "Redskins."  For now, I guess I could call them the Washington football team until the name issue is settled, but in the end it really doesn't matter because they S.U.C.K.  We feel like bad people because we call them Redskins.  We've got a quarterback with legs like fine china who probably won't be worth a damn whenever he finally does come back.  We've won one game.   We've got nothing.  It's so bad that people probably hate us more than they hate Dallas, and that's saying something.

I definitely don't hate the Redskins. Maybe because they're not NFC/Cowboys but I'm too busy hating the Broncos, Chiefs, Patriots,  49ers , Chargers, Ravens, Cowboys. Yeesh. That list is long.

  9. How many dismal seasons does one have to suffer through before you can lose interest without being called a "fairweather fan" because the Raiders are 0-5 and haven't been to the playoffs since 2002 and I just can't anymore.

  10. It's funny you say that XIII lacks direction because I felt herded through most of it. Its not a bad thing either.

Ah I should have been more specific. I meant that the characters lack direction. It's not really their fault as they're given little to no information to go on, so when they decide their next move it's usually

"Crap. We're still Cieth, and don't know how to fix it. Let's try going over there? Oh. Nothing. We're still Cieth and we still don't know how to fix it" Their actions at the end of the game continue this trend as they don't really have a plan other than kill boss, hope everything works out. It does, but only because of random asspullery.

  11. I just realized that Show Carol has become Book Andrea. Which is cool and all but I wonder why they switched plot lines.

Also sometimes I wonder about the concentration of badassery on this show. It seems like Daryl, Carol and to a lesser extent Michonne got to be all rough and tough  which made them fan favorites. Instead of giving some of the rest of the cast some time to shine, those 3 get more moments in the sun, making them more even popular and causing some resentment over the rest of the cast not doing shit for entire seasons.

  12. I gave up on OUAT because I couldn't handle the kid, but this inclusion of Elizabeth Mitchell + my love of Frozen might be enough to drag me into the fold.

...I am weirdly attracted to her.

    To the recap episodes!

  13. Dropping in to plug Wakfu, a French Flash-animated cartoon whose first season was just put up on Netflix, both subbed and dubbed. (Watch the subbed version. Seriously. This is not an argument I usually get into, but the English actors are really not great.) It's based on the MMORPG of the same name, so it's a fairly standard Five-Man-Band Fantasy Quest story about characters with disparate personalities and character classes becoming friends and fighting a Great Evil. Nothing you haven't seen before, but it's entertaining and visually appealing, and the characters are fun. There is a second season in existence that they promise will be subbed/dubbed, but I don't know when, and the first season works as a self-contained arc while still leaving plenty of room for more stuff to happen.

I always see the name getting thrown around and I've been meaning to check it out. I like the idea of watching something in French, is there something similar that you can compare it to?

  14. I'm waiting for my copy of Theatrhythm: Curtain Call to arrive any day now!

I agree that X is really well rounded and possibly has my favorite town music in Besaid Island. I've been meaning to pick up the HD remix since I haven't played it since it came out on PS2.

XIII isn't my favorite but the internet hyperbole of how bad it is is out of control! It has (for me) top 3 music, top 3 battle battle system, top 3 character design. And really those are some of the most important things for me in FF. The lack of direction/motivation is really what kept me from loving it. I definitely didn't mind the linearity (X is linear too!) or the character personalities as much as everyone else.

  15. Two somewhat shameful thoughts that I had during this movie

    • Man, Lizzy Caplan is killing it in this movie!

(Right after Amy's plan is revealed)

    •  *starting to stretch to leave theater* Man! I what a fun movie! Kinda short though. Weird how NPH was barely in it. I guess he was just a red herring. Oh...wait....it's still going!?!
  16.  I just don't think you need Jedi to tell a good Star Wars story.

Two of my favorite Star Wars games, Star Wars: Battlefront and Dark Forces had no jedi whatsoever. Then their sequels put them in and I lost interest. They're so damned powerful compared to the rest of the Star Wars universe that it throws off the balance.

Their inclusion in this show means Instead of a team of rebels, it's Jedi (and his apprentice) and the Pussycats.

Hopefully I'll be proven wrong and the other 3 will get focus (I agree that Sabine and Hera seem great) instead of just being the backup all the time.

  17. I was reading Linda Holmes' review and this part in particular resonated with me

Others see (Amy) as, by the end, a cartoon, living down to every silly idea about women as naturally devious shrews who arrange pregnancies to get their own way and pretend they have been abused when they have not been.

What has always kept Amy from troubling me in this particular sense is that she does the things she does not because they are in her nature as a woman, but because they are in her nature as a psychopath. One of the problems with the relative paucity of interesting female characters is that they become responsible for representing all women, for speaking to What Women Are Like.

One question I had was about the scene where they meet at the dinner party. It was stylistically so different from the rest of the movie. I couldn't hear what they were saying, the dialogue felt fake, the chemistry was non-existent, the acting was flat. I'm wondering if that was by design in order to show contrast between the initial, real parts of the diary and the fabricated stuff. Or something? Whether by design or by mistake, that scene is super strange. What's it like in the book?

  18. Just got back. Loooved it.

I have a question for anyone who didn't read the book -- what did you think of Nick? Did he come across as intelligent and conniving to you, like Amy did? Did you feel bad for him? Did you think he'd killed Amy? ... He also worked very hard to deliver the exact public apology that he knew Amy would want; he played her in a similar way to how she played him. Did that come across on screen?

I definitely had a wavering impression of him. Somewhere in the first third (before the affair is revealed and the diary turned negative) I definitely had a thought that he might be guilty and be playing everyone. From then on I went back and forth until the big reveal. After that I definitely felt bad for him but was definitely super flawed.

One thing that was a new experience for me was that I was kind of rooting for both Amy and Nick at the same time while simultaneously liking them both as characters but finding them terrible as people. I think that's why I liked it so much, my mind was all kinds of conflicted.

I'd love to see one of those focus groups that had people rating how they thought about each character over the course of the film.

  19. Looking back I'm not sure why I put that as a con because even though I have heard others complain about it, I personally really enjoy the look. All animation has to cut corners in some way stay in budget and I think Bakemonogatari does it in a really smart and aesthetically pleasing way.
