“Vanderpump Rules,” which airs its season six finale Monday night, has become the unlikeliest pop culture sensation since Susan Boyle or the O.J Simpson resurgence.

“People put a lot of effort into the way they look, and it shows,” says Tom Sandoval, a bartender who has helped introduce the portmanteau “mactor” (model-slash-actor) into the lexicon, and who is regularly filmed shaving his forehead. “I put even more effort in, so it doesn’t show.”

As self-appointed den mother, Vanderpump tends this group of strivers who have, in the show’s universe, failed to succeed. The emotional stagnation on display feels real. Almost every female cast member has ill-advised forearm tattoos or lip injections. They have almost all wastefully purchased $5,000 Chanel bags or are dating men who treat them poorly. One is married to a blackout drunk. Another self-soothes drinking from a baby bottle.

Was Becky/Darlene married to Mark or David? In the book it was one way but shown another. What’s canon there?

After the first two episodes, we still don’t know. Darlene said she is without a partner—avoiding name(s), gender(s), and the parentage of her children. Roseanne (or was it Jackie?) said Becky’s unnamed husband died.

Harris’s age has been retconned to high school frosh, and Mark is probably named after his dad, uncle, and/or biological father.

The actor who played Mark is dead, so TPTB could either recast the role, make Mark Becky’s dead husband, or have Johnny Galecki play Mark as the father of one or both of Darlene’s kids. Yes, that sounds farfetched—but so is Roseanne saying grace and voting Republican, or Andy being MIA.

It would allow Galecki to play a character that’s nothing like Leonard Hofstadter. And Darlene could make a wisecrack about Harris’s height. (Sidebar: I love Emma Kenney on Shameless, and think she’s well-cast here.)

The repeat episode last night was actually a good example of police work; from first blush it looked like the victim's daughter was the killer. She stood to inherit, had a key to her mom's house, found the body, pulled out the knife, bought cleaning supplies by her mom's house, and acted "weird" around the cops.  But the cops didn't stop and kept looking at everyone who had a motive, and thus caught the real killer.

I am not acquainted with Fun Dip. I wonder if it is something like a mysterious confection that is available in Great Britain known as Sherbert. It is a sweet white powder that bubbles in the mouth. It is conveyed by a hollow piece of licorice that acts like a straw, or, by a lollipop that is dipped into it.

I know we have some members from across the pond. Is it still available?

Dumbledore likes sherbet lemons (hard candy w/ sherbet inside). Dib Dabs are sherbet powder packaged with a lollipop—like Fun Dip, but fizzy. (Fun Dip was originally called Lik-m-Aid, and didn’t have a dipper—one just used a finger. At my school, some kids dipped sandwich bags of Jell-O powder.)

And he came back - don't recall the episode name, but this time the character was convinced he was possessed by a demon.  Cue the exorcist parody, complete with demonic voices (which I didn't care for—too OTT and not in the relatively realist tradition of the show).

Kenneth Tigar first played Stefan Koepeknie in season 3’s “Werewolf, then reprised the character in season 8’s “Possession.”

His characters were usually wacky: a man visited by a Revolutionary War poltergeist named Julius in “The Ghost,” a man claiming to be Jesus Christ in “The Photographer,” and a clairvoyant mugger in “The Psychic.”

I will continue to have high expectations for myself. I will continue to be out on the trails and on the road, at the gym lifting heavy, in the pool swimming laps in a figure-hugging bathing suit, or simply out in the world sharing my enthusiasm for movement, authenticity and for life.

I thank my beloved running community for allowing me this.

I recently watched an episode that took place entirely in Wojo's apartment. It was a two-person playlet about Wojo and a woman who moved in to his apartment. I take it that the woman had been a prostitute.

It seemed to be such a departure for the show, but then I had a vague memory of a Fish episode that took place in his apartment. (Or maybe I'm remembering the Fish spinoff.) Does anyone know?

I loved Wojo, and I did understand why he was thought to be studly back in the '70s. And I was really happy to see MG in the last season of "Mad Men," even though I didn't particularly like the episode in which he appeared. Still, it was great to see him again.

Only thirteen episodes ventured outside the station: “Ramon,” “Graft,” “The Stakeout,” “Hair,” “The Hero,” “Grand Hotel,” “Fish,” “Wojo’s Girl” part 2, “Contempt” parts 1 & 2, “Chinatown” parts 1 & 2, and “Eviction” parts 1 & 2. The first five were all in season one; “Fish” and “Wojo’s Girl” were backdoor pilots for spinoffs.

Also, Max Gail is currently on General Hospital.

“Rape” is where the series shows its age. Other episodes are timeless, some could easily be filmed today (racism, Middle East, Russia, etc.). But that one is certainly dated. Unfortunately, we haven't progressed far enough since then.

The characters of Marty Morrison and Darryl Driscoll are problematic, as is Wojo’s homophobia.

The article brings me to question whether Buddy, Lennie, and possibly even Whit could be abusing alcohol, if not full-blown alcoholics?

    Quote

Buddy [Luby Francis Bell III] was charged in 2014 with assaulting a government official, second-degree trespassing, resisting a public officer, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct.

Lennie [Nathaniel David Lee] had a DWI in 2008 for driving over three times the legal limit, and currently has two warrants out for his arrest after making violent threats.

If Buddy (Whit's roommate) and Lennie (her ex-boyfriend) both have charges associated with drinking, it's hard to imagine she did not see them in an intoxicated state. That means she accepted/accepts them in that intoxicated state. I don't know of too many people who put up with drunks unless they're also a drunk. So...

Is Whitney an alcoholic? Or does she abuse alcohol? And given the high calorie content in alcohol, is alcohol part of her weight problem?

Almost a year later, we know @Complexity was right about Buddy’s substance abuse. But what about Whitney? Is she an alcoholic?

Charged with assaulting a government official, second degree trespassing, resisting a public officer, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct, he was convicted of disorderly conduct, put on probation for 45 days, and fined $380.

Did I miss that it was hinted at somehow that he didn't buy the house himself? I believe it could be Rob's home. The guy does work, after all. And he's not an aging bartender or some loser DJ so I give him some credit for that. The only thing I do hold against him is that he had the least bit of interest in Scheana!

This week, as I was pondering how, if at all, the editors were going to try to explain the absence of the Stassi/Katie/Kristin dynamic from the Big Bear trip, I noticed: "wait, we haven't even seen Schwartzie in almost 2 episodes". At first I assumed he probably stepped up and did the "right" husbandly thing by staying home with Katie, and I recalled his brothers were in town so just chalked it up to those concerns.

But then he appeared on the screen mid-episode, and I immediately said to my husband, "He looks like he went to rehab". That's as healthy and sober and clean (in more ways than one) as I've seen him in years.  When he ordered iced tea at the restaurant I double wondered. I'd forgotten how adorable lucid Schwartz can be.

And then I saw the preview for next week in Vegas.  If he did in fact clean up, it didn't last long.

This show is edited, so Schwartz could have ordered iced tea at El Coyote after the Las Vegas “business trip.” (It was unsweetened ice tea, so maybe dadbod Tom was on a diet? But then he ordered jalapeño poppers, so probably not. And he wasn’t the designated driver; they arrived on scooters.)

Tom Sandoval’s 34th birthday was Friday, July 7, 2017; the Vegas trip was (supposedly) July 6–7. Since I’m attempting to establish a timeline, the SUR fire was Monday, June 19, 2017.

In other news, Katie said Schwartz was “a great mactor.” According to IMDB, he was a faerie on True Blood in 2011 and an Italian exchange student on Two and a Half Men in 2013.

  13. Schwartz confirmed that Katie suffered a traumatic brain injury from falling through the skylight:

    Quote

I’ve been reading a lot about it. It’s a really common side effect after a traumatic brain incident, your personality can change slightly. Sometimes drastically, but a little shorter tempered, your fuse gets short.

It was a joint interview, and Katie sounds like she’s been in therapy:

    Quote

In the last year I did a lot of introspective work and just wanted to feel myself again, feel healthy, feel confident—you know, worked out at the gym, wanted to be a better wife for him, be a better friend to my friends. Just be the person I really knew I was and get back to that.

When you don’t have a good relationship with yourself, it’s hard to have a good one with anyone and have perspective. I always assume my feelings to be the truth and my truths and that’s not the case. It’s okay to feel things and we can talk about it. That’s okay. It was time for me to stop feeling bad about myself or stop being angry and feeling guilty and all of that and just take it into my own hands and make some changes.

I had some indefensible behavior at times and I take responsibility. And now we’re learning together and growing together.

The REAL drinking game of this episode should be every time Lala referred to her boyfriend as “My Man!” Ug.

Hollywood producer Randall Emmett (just like Lala’s ex, Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Hayes Pullard) doesn’t want his name mentioned on this show. Hence all the my-manning, your-manning, and her-manning. Definite drinking game fodder.

He’ll be 47 next month, and his divorce from actress Ambyr Childers was finalized December 22, 2017—after this season was filmed. They have two daughters, about 8 & 4 years old.

Kerry Winter, the cousin of the Canadian billionaire who was murdered with his wife in their mansion in December, gave a wide-ranging interview to a television network this week, in which he spoke about acrimony between the two, admitted to fantasies about killing his cousin, and failed a lie-detector test after claiming that the murdered man had asked him to kill his wife decades ago.

The interview, with the Canadian public broadcaster CBC, comes about two months after Barry Sherman, founder of the pharmaceutical company Apotex, and his wife, Honey Sherman, were found dead in their mansion on Dec. 15. Police found the two on their pool deck, hanging from belts tied to a railing in a “semi-seated position,” reports said.

I remember using novelty pens in school during the early to mid-1970s that were fuzzy and had scented ink (flowery, I think, not fruity). They were kind of furry, I guess (rather than fuzzy) and I know I had a green one and a purple one. The ink was color-coordinated, too. The green pen had green ink, the purple one purple, and so on.

I remember fruity Mr. Sketch Scented Markers, but they don’t fit this forum because they’re back. And BIC 4-color pens are still a thing.

The WaPo has an advice column called "Ask Amy." I thought this was an interesting response to a reader who apparently didn't like what Amy suggested to "Active Traveler," whatever it was. (Can't you imagine what Twit's response would be in HER advice column?)

Dear Amy: “Active Traveler” was upset because her obese traveling companion couldn’t partake of the full experiences during their international travel. And now Active was concerned because another obese friend wanted to join them!

She should bring both of these friends along on her next trip. Then the two obese women can entertain each other, and Active can enjoy her own more active choices.

    Reader

Reader: “Active Traveler” was trying to maximize her own traveling experiences. Doubling down on this problem hardly seems like a solution to me.

Amy Dickinson is a syndicated advice columnist. Here’s the original question:

    Quote

Dear Amy: I am a single woman. I used to be a binge eater. About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I have since become fit and active.

I have a friend who is at least 200 pounds overweight. We are both retired. Last year we decided to start taking trips together. I enjoy her company, but after two trips together I am very disappointed in her as a traveling companion. She can barely walk two blocks. We mostly drive around or sit on benches near where we parked the car and watch the world go by. I am so sad and frustrated at not being able to fully explore these dream destinations. I need exercise to maintain my health and I love taking long walks in new places. In addition, watching her overeat at every meal is depressing.

If I start traveling without her, I feel like I would need to hide this part of my life from her to protect her feelings. Even worse, I have another friend, also obese, who also now wants to travel with me! How can I handle this?

    Active Traveler

Dear Active: Traveling with friends is often fraught with peril; and in this case, I feel like you are dangerously close to doubling down on the peril.

Given your condition and that of your friend, you must have realized that being incompatible travel companions was a possibility.

You shouldn't blame another person for you not having enough fun or getting enough exercise on your vacation. I've been on enough vacations (and exercise regimes) to know that there is only one person responsible for your experience: you.

If you really want to end your travels with this person, then you're going to have to be honest, adult and respectful. Acknowledge that the trips aren't quite what you envisioned and that, for now, you would like to become a solo traveler.

Whitney would accuse Active Traveler (AT) of body shaming her overweight friends, and insist that she follow their lead, watching the world go by and watching them overeat. Then she’d accuse AT of self loathing for dealing with her eating disorder, controlling her blood sugar, eating mindfully, and exercising. In Whitney’s worldview, AT must be jelly of those fabulous friends.

If I were AT, I’d explain to friend #1 that I prefer more active vacations—not lie about my travels to “protect her feelings.” Then I’d tell friend #2 the same thing, and ask if she’d be be ok with me taking long walks, exercising, and going on excursions without her. Traveling companions needn’t be joined at the hip, and separate activities would give us something to talk about at dinner.

Just because AT dislikes traveling with friend #1 doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have fun with friend # 2. But if it doesn’t work out, AT will have to have another honest conversation.
