There is a hotel in Belfast that was bombed by the IRA something like 30 times. I have always wondered how on Earth it stayed in business. You’d think that after, I don’t know, the first dozen bombings potential guests would have caught on.

The Europa hotel.  I actually stayed there about ten years ago or so.  My husband and I were in a new section, but my two daughters were in the old section.  They were a little weirded out.

Really enjoying "Back In Time For Dinner" on Cooking - it's a Canadian show from a few years back with a family of 5 who is forced to live as if they are in each decade from the '40s - '90s, including having their house completely redone in styles and appliances of the time.

There is a forum for this show, at least the British version - “Back in Time For…”  there are several iterations, including “Back in time for school “ and “Back in time for tea”.

Randomly - my alumni is the University of Florida. Our mascot is the alligator, so I cheered when I saw the weird as hell alligator Loki!

Anyone have or have used a countertop ice maker?

We had one briefly. It made small cubes, and not a lot, but maybe better than your fridge ice maker, if you have to keep defrosting it.

Have you tried Crunchmaster 5 seed crackers? I get them at Sam’s but Walmart has smaller pouches of them in the deli section (usually not in the cracker aisle.) https://www.samsclub.com/p/5-seed-multigrain-20-oz/prod18640215

I no longer have a Sam’s membership, and rarely go to Walmart (Target is closer), but maybe I’ll check them out sometime. I just miss those sesame seed Pepperidge Farm crackers. They used to also come in a trio package, I believe.

  6. Michael, Carla, and Clinton are all employees of the Food Network now in various capacities. Even “Sparkles”, aka Jackie Rothong has some live cooking classes on the Food Network subscription app.   I keep hoping that if the app is successful, they could put together some type of “Chew” type show on the app, perhaps once a month or as a seasonal special. I guess I can dream.  Not to compete with The Kitchen “ on the network.

When the top 4 shows show people cooking and demonstrating recipes, wouldn't you think FN would take the hint and try to cultivate more of those shows and fewer contest shows??

Well, their new streaming service, which had a 3 month free trial I took advantage of, has actual cooking classes!  I wasn’t sure I’d like it, but now I kind of do, and I have to decide by Feb. 5 if I want to pay for it. Michael Symon has 3 live shows every Thursday. Other food Network personalities have classes throughout the week. Most are simple recipes, but if you enjoy the “chefs” (some are, some are not), it is a nice way to kill some time.

  8. I miss the Pepperidge Farms sesame crackers that used to come with the four pack of crackers. We used to get them for the holidays. Now they just have the trios. The sesame crackers went so well with my clam and shrimp dip. I haven’t found a replacement.

Mario's perversity: the gift that keeps on giving. So many people had to have known about this for so long before it brought down his empire. It makes me furious and sad that he got away with it for so long.

That Eater piece is very thorough and includes some pictures and some accounts that were contemporaneously corroborated. It's pretty horrifying. It also sounds like Mario may be an alcoholic.

Ugh, to think that I used to admire this guy. In the earlier days of food Network, I used to watch Molto Mario, along with Ina Garten and Giada. I really only have admiration for only one now. Guess who?

I am reading the book "Heat" by
Bill Buford and it has a lot of Mario B in it.  Nothing good about Mario...and this was written in 2008...I think.

Yeah, it does seem like his proclivities were an open secret that would not have been too tough to uncover.

Thanks for reminding me about this book!  I read it many years ago - I’m going to reread it now!

I believe so.  She has been on a few times this season now.

So I see they have Jackie on today (behind the scenes cooking stylist).  Young, personable, fun. I’m watching now and she is talking about doing cooking competitions.  Obviously has some talent.  I wonder if there is a chance they will ask her to become a cohost?  She doesn’t have the cache that the rest have of course, but Daphne didn’t either.  I think some youth and another woman would be a nice add and I could get on board with her.

I was beginning to think they were grooming her for more air time. She seems to have a lot of cooking chops. She’s a natural on television, too, which helps.

  12.  Jesse Palmer was quarterback for the Florida Gators(chomp chomp, go Gators), then played in the NFL. He has co-hosted The Chew many times, before his morning talk-show gig. I think he is a foodie.  He was also on the Bachelor. Whether or not any of that qualifies him to be a judge on this show, I don't know, but I'm not sure about the other two, either. Maybe they have a hard time finding judges because the show is so lame?

Has anyone tried dry brining a chicken before roasting it Ina's way? The last time I followed her recipe, the chicken wasn't as moist as I thought it would be. So I was thinking of dry brining about two days in advance then the day before roasting completely dry it off and let sit in the fridge overnight before roasting the next day.

That's how I prepare my Thanksgiving turkey. Try it!  It works!

  14. I am watching the new show that I DVR'd today, and thought I'd take a peek again at tickets for the Epcot food and wine shows. They have opened them up, but I am already waitlisted for every one. If you are interested in going, I suggest you try getting on the wait list as well.
