  1. I suspect that I have been missing this since September, but just in the last week or so, I realized that some of the litigants look like they're in hotel rooms. Has anyone else noticed this? I can't figure out why they would be. Some of the litigants have been in weird rooms with people lounging on the couch behind them so it's not like they need privacy. Does anyone have any insight into this? I don't know why I care, I just do.

JJ dismisses the property damage claim.     JJ does give $700 to plaintiff, for the last month's rent.    (I disagree, I think the plaintiff is a scam artist). .

The plaintiff was sketchy as hell and definitely lying about the property but that holier than thou bitch defendant definitely got her $700 and knew that the plaintiff couldn't prove it.

  3. I think that the verdict was 100% wrong in the babysitter/daycare case. Every daycare I'm familiar with says that you pay whether your kid is there or not and you give notice to pull the kid out. If the child care provider isn't guaranteed an income from the kid, then they won't take the kid.

This is like telling a landlord that I know I'm supposed to pay rent for all of May, but I'm going on vacation from the 8th - 12th so I'm shorting him 5 days rent. I'm not going to be there, so I don't have to pay for the apartment. Sure, he can't rent it someone else for those 5 days, but that's his problem.

  4. They glossed over it, but it was pretty clear that the niece was home and her mother (plaintiff’s sister) didn’t know she was coming so the niece was hiding away from the aunts home until she got word to come for the surprise. It also wasn’t “they” who were trying to save the bees. It was the defendant. He said that the others in the neighbourhood wanted to get rid of the hive and he wanted to protect it. It’s an admirable thing to do. But it’s pretty clear he was acting alone and not on any kind of neighbourhood watch patrol regardless.

Locked and Loaded Neighborhood Patrol-Woman thinks the rules of the HOA about sheds don't pertain to her.     Defendant was part of neighborhood patrol, and had run in with niece of plaintiff, and JJ says he was in the wrong.   Bet the people who had burglaries about that time don't think so.

He wasn’t on neighbourhood patrol though. He was putting caution tape around a bee hive. Like @Byrd is the Word said, all I could think of for that entire case that I was looking at the next George Zimmerman.

I believed Statchin. I am a former teacher and there is absolutely something not right at the school for getting the police involved like that. Kids are involved all the time in situations that would be crimes if adults were involved. However, these are kids, without fully formed brains and we don’t want to see them have criminal records for things that can be easily disciplined  in other ways. Think of all the schoolyard fights that you’ve seen, how many times have the cops been called?

That said, I really do believe that an Isaiah exists, that he’s a mean kid, and that he smacked the phone to the ground. It does make sense to think, if all the same kids go from sixth period to seventh period, to think a kid would ask “is this your phone?” I think there may have been race involved in deciding to call the police on a young black boy when a young white girl's phone is broken.

This case made me furious. Judy is an old, rich, white lady. I understand she hasn't personally experienced systemic racism, but to not acknowledge its existence is disgusting. Talk about white privilege! I can't believe the staff aired this case at this time.

You can't separate the behaviour of the cops from the statements made by the kid. These cops were willing to question a 12-year old boy without a parent present. Is it really so unbelievable that they'd tell him he was going to jail? Or if they "only" told him they were going to press criminal charges, is that better? Wouldn't a 12-year old hear that and assume jail? And, don't forget that there is likely a not a 12 year old black boy in America who hasn't been taught to be extremely wary of police.

AND!! What was so unbelievable about any of it? The kid picks up a phone. Has probably a minimal amount of time to get from one period to another. He can't detour to the damn office. He either drops the phone back where he found it or he takes it to the next class and asks the kids whose phone it is. He did the right thing!

There were NO witnesses that said this kid did anything! The only evidence that he was responsible was that tainted police report. It's BS.

  7. If you've never lived in a rural area I can understand thinking that calling the police or animal control is a good idea. If you live in a rural area you know that there is no such thing as animal control and the police take 2-3 hours to turn up for a break and enter so a dog tangled in your gator is going to result in a, "What do you want me to do about it?" from the dispatcher.

The land owner's story made perfect sense to me. He mentioned in the hallway that he's been bitten by a dog before which would explain him feeling scared. His story was so credible to me. It's exactly how it would go down on our farm.

  8. 1. I’m super annoyed that there was literally zero sabotage when the preview made it sound like blue team would spend their entire kitchen prep time leaving bombs for red team. And there were zero bombs! Yeah, they exaggerate the promos but they just made up an entire story line that didn’t happen.

    2. Men vs women. Fuck that. I actually thought the chemistry was better with mixed teams. Though the men vs women split does tend to bring out the raging misogynists a bit earlier.

Just watched the case of the grandparents who evicted their daughter-in-law on Christmas Day, didn't give her enough time to move out, and didn't send list of damages for 2 months. And son is still living there, so I don't see how they can say that the damage was from her.

I agree with the verdict. I think it was spot-on. However, I don't agree when they said "you're probably very nice people." Because  I don't think they are nice people; I think they're awful people. No matter how freaking pissed you are at your Daughter-in-law, no matter how much of a b**** she may be, How the hell do you kick her out on Christmas day? Even if you don't care about just common decency, don't you care about how your grandkids are going to feel. That's got to be very stressful and awful for them. They are vindictive harpies.

That couple was vile. One of the judges asked, "what about the kids?" and their response was, "The kids could have stayed."

And, then at the end, talking about their son is "so good with the kids. He plays with them." Yeah, sounds like the typical "Uncle Dad". Those people were not "probably very nice people" and I resent the judges implying as much.

  10. The minute those stupid bagpipes got going and GR said they were in mourning, I was 100% positive it was for the stupid beef wellington (or one of the other dishes).

I didn't watch the very early seasons of this show and I may have missed a season or two along the way, but I really didn't recognize most of those veterans except for a few were vaguely familiar.

Does anyone remember the season with the "military chef" who was super misogynist and had to do a formal apology or something for his behaviour on the show? What season was that? Because there were a few other dudes that season that were nearly as bad as him and they kind of got a pass because the one guy was such a flaming douchebag the others weren't as noticeable. But, I could swear Bret was one of those guys? Maybe I'm completely imagining things or mixing him up with someone else.

  11. So, I just had a thought about The Lady and Aneela and the ending there. I kind of thought that The Lady was "inside" that little girl at the end . But then I got to thinking: What if The Lady is actually in Dutch? As in that's not Dutch that we saw at the end - it was The Lady disguised as Aneela. She was right behind them exiting the green and I assume she got out in her Aneela disguise. Then, she tosses real Dutch in a prison ship and sets herself up as Yalena with Johnny.

I guess I am in the minority as I assumed D & D have been back on a while, it was just there in the background. Little moments but IMO confirmation just the same. I think they told themselves it was casual cause both ran from romantic commitments but when D'av ran off and Johnny tried to first talk to Dutch about she & D'av then Johnny tried to talk to D'av about it with bring her gifts to make it right with Dutch, I assumed the show was no longer going to treat Dutch & D'av's relationship as subtext. The showrunner said a long time ago that Dutch & Johnny did not share a romantic love for each other and she has never deviated from that from what I have seen on social media. I think the show is just no longer being subtle and is clearly stating in the home stretch that on Dutch's left side is her platonic soulmate John and on her right side is her romantic love D'avin. They all love each other in different ways and I adore that the clear cut feelings everyone has towards each other hasn't been muddied up for silly drama and cheap plot points.

I did like that Johnny voiced his concern about the dynamics changing with Dutch and D'avin being together but that he'd rather third wheel for them than any other couple. Lucy caping for her number one man was sweet. I also liked that Johnny voiced that he wants someone to love and share his life with in a romantic sense, something I don't think he's verbally yearned for since Pawter died til now. I do hope the next woman Johnny finds to be with is a good one, especially with S5 being the final season. I would like to see him happy as well as Dutch & D'avin.

This whole post is exactly what I was thinking. Sometimes when I read this thread, I feel like I'm watching a completely different show than others. I haven't seen John/Dutch sexual chemistry, like, ever. And, I am extremely grateful that the creators are sticking with their original dynamic, rather than give into fandoms. I enjoy the way the relationships are on this show.

  13. Throughout this episode, I found myself quite annoyed. I did not enjoy Johnny & D'avin's dad. I kept cheering for him to be killed. I'm still annoyed he wasn't. But, when I think about it, the non-Daddy J parts were really good. It's nice to see positive female relationships grow. And, I like Jack. He's not a typical annoying pouty teenager. He's actually useful instead of just constantly screwing everything up. (Actually Daddy J was the useless, pouty guy that always screwed things up. That's why I hated him.)

You must despise the WestAllen on The Flash then, considering the very heavy incestual undertones of that relationship.

I need to binge the whole series again (to date), myself, but I don't ever remember Dutch telling either John or others that she considers him a brother.  Johnny has said she's like a sister to Pree once, after he caught D/D banging in 1.7 (& maybe to D'avin at some other point), but I've never heard her claim him as a brother.   That could be selective forgetfulness on my part, though.

Yep. Quit the show over it for a while. Came back because of all the ties to Arrow, but mostly only watch the crossovers. Not having any background on the comics, I didn't know that they were supposed to go there. The fact that they made them siblings to start with was a stupid move.

  15. I don't see the "heart eyes" and the chemistry. I know, I know, I'm in a minority here. But, I see her with far more sexual chemistry with D'avin or Alvis than with John. I totally get how those who see that chemistry want some steam. I just don't see it. To me, they have awesome "I love you forever/ Ride or Die" chemistry. It's just the same as I see with say Oliver & Thea on Arrow. Two BAMFs that can be partners kicking butt even when one of them is more "the boss" in the field but they'd do anything at all for eachother.

I just always took the characters at their word, right from episode 1, where they referred to eachother as siblings, not lovers. Maybe that's why I can't get past the idea that they're going to end up lovers. They're more like brother and sister and it's kind of incesty.

  16. I binged this entire show's run in the last couple of weeks, never having seeing it before. I love it. But, I have never once looked at it and thought that Johnnny/Dutch were some OTP end game romantic pairing. I see them as family and best friends. But not lovers.

I am delighted that a show, especially a genre show is willing to put out a mature, non-sexual deep relationship between a woman and a man. It's too rare on TV. It makes me sad that this beautiful relationship isn't enough for so many watchers.

I don't think they should throw in a new love interest for Dutch in the last season, so if they must have her paired off romantically at the end, I'm all for D'av. But I would take Fancy, Turin, that reformed Hullen who looks like Grey Joy, Garad, Pree, Delle Seyah Kendry, Khylen, Aneela, Pip, Zeph, D'av's kid and a reanimated version of Pawter before I'd choose Johnny. Just let them be what they are. It's perfect.

  17. I’ll start by saying that it was a nice nod to the books that it was a black commander that got his wife pregnant, which sort of showed that infertility was more of a white male problem than a male problem.

When I first watched, I thought that Eden saw Nick and knew he would see her kissing Isaac. I’m not sure now but originally I thought the flashes of Nick flicking the lighter and Eden looking out the window - I thought she was looking at Nick knowing he’d step outside and see it.

But, I don’t see Eden as a villain. I think she’s a child raised with the belief that a fake wedding ceremony means that a man will love and cherish her as long as they both shall live. Nick could do a lot for himself by simply being kind to her. I was annoyed that he didn’t take the opportunity to tell her that he would come to love her in time - even if it’s not true.

Until I read the interview with the writer, I thought that for sure Fred had set up a sting. It made sense. He’s been told he’s not the father. His handmaiden has disappeared before. He can say Nick aided her escape attempt, get him executed and get her chained to a bed until the baby comes and then get her executed. Without telling anyone that the baby isn’t his.

Now, it seems that isn’t the case that Fred set up capture. The next episode is going to have a lot of explaining to do.

I still hate that we get this 4 days later in Canada. It’s annoying to be late to a conversation.

  18. In the real world, today, it took Justin Trudeau 2 full days to publicly denounce US practice of forcibly removing children from their parents. And it took that long because he’s dealing with an unstable and unpredictable ruler that can turn on him with no notice while he’s in he middle of negotiating the most important trade deal for his country. Canada really doesn’t want to lose the NAFTA deal.

So imagine having to take the moral stand that Canada would completely cut off all trade with the US. It would be economically devastating. But, it seems the Canadian government did that in the show. All while taking in an unprecedented number of migrants walking across the border seeking asylum. I can see why the Canadians in the show want to negotiate trade. Their economy must be fucked. But when shit for real, they walked away. So good for them.

And I did love that the senior officials sent to negotiate included a woman and a gay man. It gives me hope that even in this dystopian world, Canada’s default foreign policy includes throwing low-level shade straight at the US.

One more thing to add: it infuriates me that Canada is getting this show 4 days later than the US. Every week, I promise not to spoil myself and every week I’m reading the Vulture recap by Thursday morning. So annoying.

  19. I’m fine with Jamie and Eddie but: 1. They can’t remain partners. Just no. And 2. Frank could not have been more of a dick in my opinion. No congratulations. No smiles. Just offering HER (not him) a precinct transfer. You want to avoid the appearance of nepotism? Transfer your own kid, not his fiancé.

  20. This is a novel question more than a novel vs show question, but this seems the best place to put it.

Does anyone have a link to the “Questions” and answers from the newer (I think 2017) released audio book?

I read the original and the only audio version my library has is before the Qs and As were released and I’d really like to read them.

  21. The minute they said they needed to get to the satellites in space, and didn’t immediately call up Supergirl, I checked out. Seriously? At least call the Legends with their damn spaceship. God this team is dumb. Are we sure Devoe’s weapon isn’t already deployed?

But then why in S1E3 did the Eye guy come and ask why Ofred didn't report that Ofglen was gay?

Shouldn't they have known she was bc that was her gender-traitor reaon for being a handmaid?

The only way Offred could knownthat Ofglen was gay is if Ofglen told her. And Ofglen would never do that because being gay is illegal. Unless she felt she could really trust Offred not to rat on her. And she would only have that trust if Offred was tied up with supporting the “degenerate lifestyle.” Making Offred a criminal. If Offred was loyal to the regime, she’d run to the first authority she found and tell them that Ofglen admitted to being a gender traitor. She didn’t. So she’s a traitor.

Essentially, I think it’s a big trap to prove Offred is complicit with May Day.
