Panda Express, a fast foodish restaurant that at best is as good as Chinese food from a food court, has this commercial in circulation with a scene where their take-out food is steaming up their glasses (yeah, right) and the singer is doing this plinka chinka-plinka cadence that sounds like "oriental music" which I find totally annoying.

To follow up on others' comments that it's a real song: The cadence is original to the song, and the lead singer even said on his YouTube channel that he was surprised at how close they made the cover to the real song.

They also added some Mandarin in the middle. They did that, too, with Ring of Fire. I think that was entirely in Mandarin when they used it for another commercial. I can't think of any others.

Don’t Stop Believing by Journey was a good song for it’s time but it’s played out so much now the song sucks

I liked it until Glee ruined it.

  3. But hey, at least if the product doesn't work as implied, they can say "We never said you'd have fewer wrinkles; we said you'd have less!"

There is one Botox commercial I've been seeing lately and I can't tell the difference in the before and after. They shouldn't put the person in makeup.

I always thought it was Eddy are you okay. My crap ears again, also my dad's name is Eddy, so I'd have it in the brain.

This reminds me of how everyone thinks The Weight is about a lady named Annie.

  5. I thought these commercials were annoying when they first came out, but they were 1000 times better than the Lume commercials with Dr. Grody.

Also, did they use up their entire ad budget in perpetuity on that? Why are they so cheaply made now? Do they think we have a higher tolerance for low production values now that we're used to newsbroadcasters and such working from their living rooms?

Ha! I was going to respond to "I just wish this was longer" with a "Then watch this" and a link to this video 😀

  7. I saw a new one recently in which the spilled liquid is about to flow onto the carpet. That one at least makes sense, since you can't pick up the floor and get it out of the way. I don't know how the brand you use is going to affect how quickly you can run to the kitchen and get a paper towel to catch the spill before it makes it off the table, though.

Some shows might have shown the episode titles but most didn't.  And TV Guide didn't usually include them because there was only so much space.  They'd leave a description or a title.

I didn't really pay attention until I got online and that's when I started learning titles for old episodes.

I think the TV schedule in my local newspaper used to put the titles in sometimes.

It seems like my unpopular opinion might be that the titles, or lack thereof, make absolutely no difference at all.

  9. I'm sorry, but I am going to be pedantic, because it answers your question. As you noted, a panther and a jaguar are the same thing. Pumas and mountain lions are also the same thing. Bobcats are not particularly big and scary, and neither really are lynxes, although I don't think they're present in the US enough be a military mascot. Leopards are not from North America, so that's why they wouldn't be an American military mascot.

So the only choices are the panther/jaguar, the cougar/puma/mountain lion, which are both scary, but also present in the trope, as you mentioned; and the bobcat, which is only slightly larger than a large housecat and not really something you're going to lock up your children over if it's on the loose.

(I was yesterday years old when I finally figured it out.)

I'm curious if you also misheard Sugar Ray's "Fly."

Great song. They did have another one that got a bit of radio airplay back in the day that I really like as well:

I love that song so much. It's one of those songs that I can remember where I was the first time I heard it (in my room doing homework, but still).

there's this ad for a pregnancy test with three women: a college student and a business woman (who don't want to be pregnant) and a woman who really wants to be pregnant.

What I don't get is the business woman sitting at her fancy, professional-looking, desk, leaving the pregnancy test lying on her desk while she waits. So fresh-faced intern pops in and sees it sitting there? Wouldn't any normal person let it rest in her top drawer?

While I appreciate that the commercial depicts women who want a negative test, it still bothers me that the women have to be shown having a "good reason" not to want to be pregnant: too young/not ready and too busy*.  I'd rather they just show a woman not wanting to be pregnant without showing why. It shouldn't matter why.

*I'll set aside the fact that a business man would be unlikely to be depicted as not being in a good position to become a parent.

i wouldn't have minded sellect doing commercials if he had done another one, maybe something to keep your mustache looking fresh (is there even anything that does that?)  but for this reverse mortgage product, nope.

Tom Selleck should do commercials for Just for Men Mustache and Beard.

I don't get why it's sad or bad for an actor to do a commercial if they want to.

I think because commercials generally are seen as something you do on your way up.

I don't think it really matters, although it seems a bit money-grubbing to me, and even if commercials aren't beneath Paul Giamatti, the weird Einstein role might be.

But I do think actors should be careful about their timing with commercials. Remember when Katherine Heigl was doing cat litter commercials? For all I know she didn't need the work, but after her career kind of slowed, it made it seem like no one else would hire her.

It's a caricature of a specific person, not an ethnic stereotype and perfectly fine in my opinion.  Not funny but not verboten either.

Yeah, I don't think it's a stereotype. It's not like he strolled up eating a sausage and walking a wiener dog. I'm not so sure it's even a caricature. All he's doing is a German accent (maybe not a good one?) and wearing an Einstein wig. I don't know what Einstein sounded like when he spoke English, but I assume he did have an accent, having learned English in middle age, and without the wig, you wouldn't even know it was Einstein. It seems like they were doing the bare minimum to make it clear who it was.

I guess it depends on the the community.  It sounds like you live in an area with large lots and space in between houses, which sounds great.  Where I live, it's the typical suburban community, houses lined up right next to each other.  There's really nowhere else for the dogs to do their business but on somebody's lawn.  I've seen plenty of dogs doing the same to mine, as I said, it's just an aspect of home ownership that comes with living where I live.

That's kind of how my neighborhood is, so I plan my route so that my dogs will poop where there isn't grass. Like, one of my dogs likes to poop under these trees where all that's there is leaf litter. It's kind of annoying because I can't really mix up the route, but I prefer not to let them poop on someone's lawn if I can help it. Even if I can pick it up cleanly, one of my dogs is a real kicker when she's done and I don't want her tearing up someone's grass.

Way back at the beginning of this conversation I said I was one who would pick up trash off the street and put it in the nearest can. This was on garbage day before the truck came through and the stuff I was putting in the bins was like soda cans and plastic bags, not dog poop. I won’t apologize for this. I consider this a community service. 😄

I'll pick up trash, too, but I still bring it home to throw it away. I actually use a dog poop bag to carry it!

"of course I'm going to use your can, who wants to carry poop all the way back home"?

I mean, no one, but there are lots of things about having a dog that I don't want to do, but I still do it.

  18. The reason it bothers me that someone would put trash  in a stranger's garbage can is because it's rude to use something that belongs to someone else without asking. You're not a guest in my home, I don't know you from Adam, so don't use my stuff. I think it's just as rude to put a candy wrapper or anything else non-gross in someone else's can.

I know some people feel that since the trash can (often) technically belongs to the trash company or the city, anyone who uses that service is entitled to use any trash can, since it doesn't belong to the homeowner. I disagree. If I leave my library book sitting somewhere where other people can see it, is it socially acceptable for other people to start reading it because they also pay taxes and have a library card? I think most people would say no.

If I were out in front of my house and someone asked if they could put something in my trash can, I would never say no (unless it was an unreasonable quantity of garbage), but for someone to do it without asking is so rude to me.

(Three paragraphs makes it seem like I think this is a bigger deal than I really do. When I looked in my garbage can and saw a strange poop bag, I just said "oh huh" and went on with my day.)

On 2/13/2023 at 7:44 AM, blackwing said:

I would say that if the cans are sitting at the curb on trash day and the collection has not yet occurred, then I don't have issues with someone using the can.  However, what I do consider rude is if someone uses my can for their dog's poop AFTER the collection has occurred.  Then I'm left with someone's dog's poop in my can for an entire week.  I've had this happen to me at least twice, and didn't realise it until it started to smell.  Now I check the emptied cans to make sure they are fully emptied, before bringing them back inside my garage.

I'm curious what you would do with a poop bag if you found one in there. When I found one, I just left it there, because where else would I put it?
