I found it boring. Knowing full well they could just jump in the Tardis and travel back to yesterday if anything happened

That's not how Doctor Who works.  Wherever he goes it becomes very difficult for him to return to that exact time and place.

This was admittedly hard to watch. I had to keep turning away...I recorded it so I can re-watch if I need to.

I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the deep south, right when this stuff was going on. The first half brought back too many memories. I was having emotional flashbacks, one after the other, till I had to turn away till that part was over. The looks, the slap, soon as I saw that handkerchief fall I knew it was gonna be bad. Do you know? Men have been KILLED for doing what he did? That was too much for me. And the looks at the restaurant. Damn. Couldn't take it. Although "we don't serve coloreds here" "good, cause I don't eat 'em" Good for you kid!

Not a fan...but well...I lived it. Boy, girl, being said to 70, 80 year old men and women...I didn't like it.  Never got called ma'am or sir. Only BOY or GIRL. Let me stop. I'm still 'het up' from that one.

It was good, but too dark.

Bit of history for my British friends:

It was actually Claudette Colvin, aged 15, who got arrested and kicked off the bus, but she was both too young and too belligerent to be the 'mother of a movement' so the NAACP chose their secretary, one Rosa Parks, to go out and catch that bus again, sit in the white section on purpose, and pray she got arrested. She was older, more mature, and calmer overall than a hotheaded kid. This was a well-planned, well-executed endeavor. It wasn't just a tired lady who didn't want to move, this was planned. It was Claudette Colvin who should've gotten all those accolades, she's the real mother of the movement.

Didn't 'get' the future racist thing. I would've liked to see him fleshed out more, why was he there, what was he trying to accomplish in the future, where (and when) was he from, stuff like that. He was there, he was British, then he was gone. Uh....huh? What? Wha-happened? What a waste of a villain.

So far, 3 episodes in, the villains for this season have been boringly, shockingly weak.

Your point about this being planned and Rosa Parks being a determined volunteer is why I didn't like this episode.  Even if the future racist (neoest-nazi?) managed to prevent it on one day, she'd have made her stand pretty soon so this story made our characters too central to the narrative.  That was just a Very Special Episode that didn't do justice to the civil rights movement even while trying to showcase them.

I did still like the scene setting and the characters' reactions to events.  It's much better than last season when Bill had to remind Capaldi's doctor that her color was a problem for her in older London but then it didn't really show up in other people's reactions to her.

One of my biggest annoyances is why are these people sitting around in a room learning philosophy all day? That made sense in the afterlife. But they are on an Earth filled with suffering. Go out and help someone! For real not for your own self-worth. It doesn't have to be one or the other. They can still learn from Chidi. But also actually do good things.

I think that's something that show just hasn't explored yet and I think they haven't developed it much for plot and character reasons.  In the afterlife it wasn't entirely applicable.  Here on Earth it's a product of the established dynamics.  Chidi, for all of his interest in ethical actions, has never been shown to spend a lot of time on charity work.  He's fascinated with the question of how to make an ethical choice but not with simply doing good.  Therefore, he's not thinking to teach the others to do something that he doesn't do himself.   (Admittedly, they can change that emphasis on a dime because surely some of the syllabus has works on faith/intent vs conduct.)

What I find a little off is that the characters just don't seem to be quite as smart this season and the situations don't feel as specific.  Like, Michael's fascination with paper-clips and suspenders was an interesting symptom of a near-immortal being trying to connect with human ephemera but his attempts at an Australian accent are just a dumb joke that they already did with real-Eleanor.

On a plot-level, I'm finding myself disconnected from Michael's desperate fear for the fates of Team Cockroach because the Judge told him that the humans will now live out their lives and be judged naturally (because of his meddling). That means that none of them have the immediate threat of the Bad Place hanging over them.  Michael has already bought them entire lifetimes to make a full set of human choices and live human lives.  It's Michael and Janet's fates that are hanging on a knife edge.

One last thought -- maybe what the show is missing this season is actual ethical dilemmas. This episode was centered on Tahani's love-life; the last one on essentially an annoying coworker, the premiere on getting the gang back together and Chidi's love-life.  Give me a trolley problem or an argument about sacrificing for a friend, or whether it's ethical to lie.

Unless you were one of the people employed by the previous production company.  That's why Mel and Sue quit - in support of the camera operators, production assistants, etc. who were losing their jobs.

They quit because of ties to the BBC, not the staff of GBBO.

  5. Let's all take a moment to remember our introduction to Daryl:

That guy could've been a leading man for the series.

This show always skips what I think would be the interesting stories - about people trying to survive and maybe rebuild their world -- in favor of dick-measuring, monologues, destruction, and "shocking" deaths.  But, they've screwed up all the stories they did choose to tell for the past 2.5 years so they'd probably screw up the stories I'd like too.

Yes .. I can't think of one cute moment in their entire relationship which is rare for a tv show . They really despised each other and yet we're supposed to believe they're soulmates / loves of each other's lives

Did Kelly have chemistry with any man they paired her with?

In that time, “she’s become a mother,” Gimple noted, “so from an emotional standpoint, as far as any sort of reset or even exacerbation of what she was feeling, that baby is a big part of it.”

If Lauren Cohan can actually sell the idea that caring for her baby makes her more willing to burn down the crew's first moment of relative peace and security lasting longer than 30 days, she will deserve an Emmy nomination regardless of what accent she says it in.

  8. Stacy's aesthetic wasn't my cup of tea but I enjoyed watching her (holding the door shut on a broken oven is one of the more memorable moments of the season).  We can't taste the bakes but it seemed from what we saw and the judges' spontaneous reactions during the episode that Stacy did better on the weekend (not equal, better) than did Steven but not enough to take away his spot in the finale.   I would have been deeply disappointed if Steven missed the finale (and I'm certainly not the only one) so it's better for the show and for Stacy herself to be eliminated now, so I'm happy with the result.

For crying out loud - why can't they put AC into that fancy tent??

This is a common issue in reality shows.  There's often no AC because it interferes with the audio recording.

As for the heat this week, at least it did not prevent pizza or cannoli from cooking properly like has happened sometimes when the bakers are asked to do chocolate work or mousse or ice cream in 90+ degree heat.  This was incredibly unpleasant (and possible dangerous) but not interfering with the results of the challenges.

  10. spoilers - Ha!  My swiss cheese memory laughs at them.

I listened to all of PTV's podcasts on the Noel/Sandi/Pru/Paul season when they came out and was not spoiled in the least while watching the season on Netflix over the past two weeks.

  11. I've liked  Noel from the beginning but was meh about Sandi until tonight.  She was so genuinely sorry for Julia during the announcement that I almost choked up.  Also, I had completely forgotten how young Julia was; she's really not much older than Liam.

My guess is PBS could not pay what Netflix was offering?

^ That sounds right.  ... Or, PBS just didn't care that much about buying rights to the show so soon after airing BBC's Season 3 this Summer.  My local PBS station always treats GBBO like a piece of junk to burn off when no one's watching (on several occasions, I've had to go to streaming to get episodes that disappeared from the schedule) so I'm not sure PBS really values it as much as they should.

  13. Why is anyone excited by the "mystery" of the helicopter?  I don't see any sensible way it fits into the universe we've been shown so I'm pretty certain that it's going to be either laughably stupid, totally inconsequential or both.

I'd like to have something to look forward to so please hit me with your theories that explain why someone running it would care about Jadis and what interesting group they could represent

  14. Did anyone else watch the preview show last night?  I kind of liked the scene between Daryl and Carol talking about Ezekiel and that the actors were making fun of Norman Reedus for refusing to ride a horse.  Also, it was interesting that they were so open about Rick's departure but very little or no discussion of Maggie leaving.

Kang was a pleasant departure from Kirkman or Gimple on the couch but she seemed a bit too much a fan/cheerleader for a showrunner.  Also, YNB was pretty funny but even more "look at me" than Hardwick.

(p.s. - This probably isn't the right thread but I finally watched the last 5 episodes of last season over the weekend and all of you who were insulting those episodes were ... too kind.  That was some really dumb garbage imitating a TV show. I really hope that Kang sees the flaws in the show and tries to fix them because I guess I haven't quit the show yet.)

  15. I think AMC acted properly - announcing an investigation and a temporary suspension while they sorted it out.  But, having read the various stories, I can't fit her account into my usual framework of believing the accuser so I admit I'm more curious to hear what comes out of the investigation than I should be for two people I don't really care about.  I'm rooting for YNB to do a good job mainly because TWD and TD used to be fun and it would be nice if they started improving everything related to this stupid franchise.  And, if her claims aren't proven and he comes back to TD, I'll hope he improves too.

Some of this actually sounds interesting, more real life problems.  But as long as Negan continues in any capacity (some things can never be forgiven) I will still experience this show third hand here in the forums.

The Alexandria storyline could have been that too but instead they focused on Rick finding his twu wuv, killing her husband, losing her to a horde and then finding his Negan.

There’s obviously no bump visible on Maggie in the above poster, so unless the talked about forward time jump amounted to no more than a week or two, then Maggie has either lost the baby, or has given birth some time ago. She is, unfortunately believed to be exiting the show sometime in the front half of the season, with Rick down to leave, does that mean we’ll have two ‘orphans’  for the show to have to deal with?  Michonne is the likely career of Judith, but what about baby Glenn, Beth, Hershel? Will Jesus step up and take the job on? Will Carol’s maternal instincts be reawakened to such an extent that she steps in and takes control?

3 orphans - they also have the baby they captured from the Saviors.  Maybe Aaron will be running a nursery after  the time jump ;)

Lord I hope it's not Carol.  That would be such a huge emotional distance from where she is now.  I'd be fine with it as a journey shown on screen but if it all happens off-screen, it would just be character assassination.

  18. I just wanted to thank you for recommending Nanette. I never would have watched it based just on the preview showing on Netflix and wow was it amazing.

It makes the sheer laziness of some of Netflix's stand-up shows more annoying in retrospect.

    .........what were we talking about?

I think you were about to tell us about another story idea - an alternate timeline where Sasha and Rosita ditched Abraham for each other and Negan never showed up ... or was that the little voices in my head?
