I do wish they'd stop dissing community colleges.  The ones around here at least (including the one I work for) all have transfer agreements with the four-year state universities, and we have to meet their standards.  There is nothing easy about our classes!  They are significantly less expensive, too.

I work for a top level university and I would tell ANYONE who has a kid looking at college to seriously consider the two year community college route and then transfer to a four year to finish a BA/BS. It’s insanely cheaper, you can usually get your general requirements out of the way, and no one looking at jobs (unless you are in a VERY specialized field) will care you went anywhere else - your diploma would still ultimately read the four year university. My father did the community college route and was given free ride offers to almost every Ivy when he left. There is a massive stigma regarding cc’s and it’s incredible to me that folks will drop 250K and put themselves in massive debt to come to a school like ours - while we are good, it’s not like you are getting a education THAT much different than you would otherwise (certainly not at that price point, and I say this as both an admin an an alum). Frankly, I’d put many of my father’s former cc professors ahead of ours in the rigors of their coursework (we still keep in touch).

This whole storyline just makes me angry.

My family is very much not the Roys in any significant way.

And I have never seen a show depict more accurately those awful weird moments among the siblings during/after a parent’s death.

    Well, that’s excellent television.

Absolutely. I had some…flashbacks to my own personal grief. I don’t even like the Roys and I hurt for them. Fabulous acting and writing.

My family couldn’t be more different than the Roys, but damn this hit home. My father died extremely suddenly a decade ago and this called up so many flashbacks I cried throughout the episode. Superbly acted by everyone. They absolutely nailed what it’s like to have to triage an event like this, and the sibling dynamic was spot on. Even the gallows humor moments…this was an utterly fantastic piece of television.

  3. Am loving this season so far. Sondheim/Kander & Ebb, etc. tend to be more my jam, and all the Fosse references were delightful. And I love Titus as the narrator.

I think Aaron’s character is supposed to be a mashup from Pippin/Hair/Godspell. I cracked up at the hand puppet.

I also cracked up at that random Bye Bye Birdie reference in the jail. Loved that.

Dove Cameron would make an excellent Sally Bowles.

I think Mei is shaping up to win this.  No one else has got a score in the 90s, and she has two.  The scores seem lower than previous seasons.  Mei has the RBF of all time, but her flavors are always on point.

If we can comment on the commercials - are they planning to rerun TruTV's Fast Foodie episodes, or did they actually remake it?  The set looked different to me, but I cannot believe that Justin has recovered from his accident in time to do this.

Looking at the first airing episodes, it looks like they are moving at least some of the previous Fast Foodies episodes to Food Network from TruTV. However, it was implied by the announcement on Justin’s instagram that there will also be new episodes. So maybe the repeats are to lure in those who haven’t seen it previously?

Thank god, Justin seems to be making an incredible recovery. I’m sure he’s still got a long road ahead of him, but I know he’s had posts of himself cooking again and he’d been making the rounds for a cookbook he did. Cannot believe how much he has improved since that accident. After hearing about the initial injuries, he’s honestly lucky to be alive.

I just found a bunch of Elizabeth Cadell's on kindle unlimited.  She is somewhat obscure now I guess but she was a British author writing mainly in the 50s-80s and while of course her stuff is dated they are just the kind of light fun reads I am in the mood for right now.   Just started Six Impossible Things and so far so good.

    Love Elizabeth Cadell's work!

"Supporting FOUR weekly storylines each week doubtless drives up costs. I can see CBS pushing for a cast reduction to reduce costs."

Agreed. Ditch Wahlberg. Same character every week, same tantrum every time lack of evidence keeps him from getting the warrant he wants, same Moderately Smudged Harry act to get a confession... The character has rarely been interesting since Linda's death.

Selleck and Wahlburg are the biggest name draws from an audience standpoint. I could see them literally set fire to the house with all other characters inside before they got rid of either of those two, lol, unless they themselves were ready to move on.

Sometimes one reads a book and is so impressed, so moved, that one has to post about it.  I've been reading the Donna Leon mysteries for years, I'm reading them sequentially, and because they're so good, I want them to last, I read one a  year.  It takes all the restraint I possess to do so, but it's so worth it.  I just finished Earthly Remains, her 26th Guido Brunetti book, I'm just awestruck how the 26th in a series of mystery books can be so well-written, so unlike the other 25, and so moving.  I can't say enough of this series.  Brunetti is a deeply principled commissario in Venice, he's seen the worst of humanity, but he's no brooding Swede or alcoholic Norwegian, Brunetti is sophisticated, he reads the classics, he enjoys a good meal, he loves his wife and children, all the while painfully aware the city he loves is dying around him.  Each of the novels, so far, feature an ugly aspect of the city, yet Brunetti remains above the ugliness.  I'm only posting this because I don't recall anyone posting about Leon.  She certainly deserves it.

I had purchased Acqua Alta on a whim right before a trip to Italy in 2019 and loved it - when the pandemic began, I went on eBay and bought a giant lot of Donna Leon books and started reading the series from the beginning. Absolutely love those books.

I don't understand why Elia was given so much trust by the New Republic.  She was very recently one of Moff Gideon's top henchmen. Why would they take her word over Pershing's?  His story of her setting him up made just as much sense as hers -- maybe more sense.  And why would they leave her completely alone in the room with the controls.  It just seems ridiculous and implausible that they have full faith and confidence in her suddenly.  The way the doctor was fawning over her before he left her alone seemed off.  Even if she went to them beforehand to say Pershing was planning something, it seems they would at least listen to what he had to say and consider Elia's conduct and past before just  immediately frying his brain.

Every single part of this. It made no sense to me and was just plot contrivance after plot contrivance.

I may be the only person who feels this way, but personally I don't care about "canon."  I would be fine if the show were based upon the Sheldon character from TBBT but departed radically from the backstory depicted on that show.  In fact I would prefer it.  I have no desire to see the Cooper family destroyed by infidelity and/or George's premature death.  I would much rather see the writers continue to create new storylines for this likeable group of characters as their lives evolve (like Georgie's adapting to life as a father).

I can understand why you and others may not want to see some of those elements unfold on screen. But my issue stems from the fact that Young Sheldon is derived directly from the life and characters laid down by TBBT. I would be interested in a sitcom about a family who has a super-genius son and is dealing with everyday life. But that’s not this show, and I feel like the writers keep trying to have it both ways and coming up short for both parties.

This is what confuses me about YS, I totally get that they weren't going to do this show and include every anecdote Sheldon shared on BBT but what I don't understand is why they have  included stuff like potential adultery and George's fondness for beer but not really in anyway the way it was talked about on BBT where you are told George was chronically unfaithful and an alcoholic.  I mean, why bother?

I’m deeply frustrated with the writers dancing around this. It’s canon that George was chronically unfaithful. It’s not a misunderstanding based on the hazy memories of youth. I don’t know if it’s because they like the actor and are hesitant to go this route because of it, or what, but I really hate how they’ve handled this storyline. The fact that they are doing the whole thing with Pastor Rob and Mary also irks me, because it comes across like the show is trying give George an excuse for eventually cheating. People are three dimensional, and I’m fine with exploring that, but the show writers seem like they’re really trying to avoid one of the key historical facts of this family, which is very aggravating. “They keep meeting secretly in the chicken coop, but nothing has actually happened between them!” Come on, show.

I saw this over the weekend, the parts not including TB were good, but the end had way too much Tom Brady.  And that final scene was just cringe.  I liked Gronk's cameo it was just enough and he was the dumb jock we all know and love without going too dumb jock (USAA commercials).  He hit the Himbo sweet spot.

One thing that had me scratching my head was the choice of previews for this movie.  I really want to have a word with whomever at the studio or AMC who decided this movie was perfect movie to advertise multiple Marvel projects and Cocaine Bear.

I think part of is the overall lack of films being released in comparison to pre-pandemic. I’ve been going to the movies weekly and seen some truly odd selections for the previews. Last week a romantic comedy I was seeing had Cocaine Bear and horror films for previews. Sometimes seems like studios are just throwing out everything and hoping something sticks with the audience.

But weren't they? I thought that was why Helen was breaking them all over the place (as well as letting out her anger). They were the gasoline she needed to start the initial fire?

The statues were just statues. The initial fire was fueled from when she destroyed the bar and lit the liquor on the floor on fire, which carried up and lit the rest of the bar remnants.

I just saw Love, Lights, Hannukkah and how did I miss seeing this one before?  Marilu Henner just is totally amazing and I loved the whole movie.  Definitely going on my "must rewatch" list!

I really enjoyed that one as well when it first aired. I ended up buying the DVD!

And I didn't get that jacket/shirt thing he was wearing.

I thought I heard Leslie's partner say something about liking him a lot, esp. in Deep Space Nine?  If so, he's confused. And seeing Leslie on the show was bitter-sweet.

His partner mentioned having watched him in DS9 and in Will & Grace. Leslie did have a brief appearance in DS9 in an episode as a Ferengi character, so that was probably what he was referencing, though it’s not one of his most memorable roles by any stretch.

I went to see if this reallly happened and apparently Chi-Chi's had already filed bankruptcy (after they had closed a bunch of restaurants) when a month later there was a outbreak of hepatitis A from tainted green onions. At the resutarant outside of Pittsburgh.

Four people died from the outbreak and over 650 were sickened. It was definitely the final nail in the coffin for them. Though I believe some products bearing their brand name still exist on grocery shelves, and they had some restaurants overseas until this year.

This might be a shock to some, but an alcoholic or drug addict doesn't need 9 million dollars to get clean and sober.  One just needs to go to their local 12 step group.  My friends and I have been going for decades.  We have found a higher power, we've cleaned house, we're helping others (The 12 steps in shorthand).  We tell our stories, we share our experience, strength and hope FREE OF CHARGE.  This is why this book is suspect.  It's a commercial enterprise. MP can help others without an advance.

That’s wonderful that has worked for you and your friends. However, the idea that because it works for you, it works that way for everyone else with addiction issues, simply isn’t true. I’ve had many in my life who the 12 steps has done wonders for. Many for whom it has not. He’s not forcing anyone to purchase this book. He’s not selling services or a miracle cure. I’m not sure how him publishing his own personal experiences with addiction is a commercial enterprise.
