  1. Episode 6: "Wild Card High Jinks!"

The judges: Lorena Garcia, Rocco Dispirito, Jonathan Waxman

Matchup 1: Tiffani Faison vs. Amanda Frietag - Amanda Frietag wins!  Another Champion bites the dust! I believe that Tiffani is done with TOC; she has her belt and ring. I wonder if she will still be friends with Chef AF...

Matchup 2: Jet Tila vs. Carlos Anthony - Jet Tila wins!  I'm so glad Jet won! I really don't like the arrogance from CA considering that Jet beat him twice before! Show some respect to the Jetster.

Matchup 3: Britt Rescigno vs. Marc Murphy - Britt Rescigno wins!  Honestly, I would have let the pumpkin go, but Britt was able to rock it to her advantage.  MM also seems a bit under the caliber of the other competing chefs. He probably could have utilized his time better in TOC as a judge.

Matchup 4: Mei Lin vs. Lee Ann Wong - Mei Lin wins!  Listen, the reigning champ is a machine! I can see how everyone is not too keen to go up against her. I think the only thing that could stop her from winning a second belt is Randa...

Only two previous TOC champions remain! I'm going to reserve my call on who may win TOC 5 until after next week.

I was surprised that the wife who told us that she was a World Champion Double Dutch jumper didn't take the rope challenge.  True, her husband owns the business with her, but she's a champion so I thought it would be in her wheel house.

I was confused as well; being that she was smaller and more adept at jumping rope, Michelle would have killed that challenge.  The cousin killed me for barrelling straight into the Roadblock without completely reading the clue.

  3. Ooow weee. This pack of racers... There's only 4 teams with any get up and go! about them. The rest of them, just strolling around the island like they have all the time in the world! This was so stressful to watch and not scream "RAAAAAACCCE!" at the top of my lungs. I might have lost my voice if I did that. Heh.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I'm noticing the Racers' backpacks more than normal.  A few observations...

In general, the backpacks are smaller than I've seen in other seasons.  Lots of what I would call a "day pack", slightly larger than a school backpack.

The pilots have the largest backpacks of all the racers.  I think that's sort of funny because a) they're guys and b) they're military.  You'd think they could pack for 2 weeks in a shoebox.  The twins also have larger backpacks.  These guys look like they would wear the same outfit for 2 weeks in normal life, so again, it sort of surprises me.

The nurse anesthetists have one pack between the two of them.  And it's a small one at that.  I think it's good to pack light, but if you're packing that light why not split it between the two of you?

The woman in the Double Dutch couple has a length of rope in the side pocket of her backpack.  I find that strangely weird.

Non-backpack observations:  I normally love a super-fan team, but damn, Team Walla Walla is super annoying.

I do not understand the moms' tactic for finding the right flag string.

Totally agreed on the 2 observations I highlighted; that a team has only one backpack between them is a good idea! I have never seen that before.  And I wonder what bricabrac the teams might be carrying that they don't need; Shelisa (Yellow Married Couple) dumped puzzle books that popped out of her backpack last week. Michelle (Red Double Dutch Couple) might have just wanted to jump rope in the downtime.

Team Walla Walla? Might be the next to go if the next leg was as strenuous as this one.

So many teams not reading clues, Team Twins dropping their clues, and so many teams not willing to ask for directions!  So Derek and Shelisa was the only team openly offered a map?  I guess the other teams didn't go by that stand with the helpful owner...

  4. Episode 5: "The Super 16 Step Up!"

The judges: Marcus Samuelsson, Lorena Garcia, Scott Conant

Matchup 1: Michael Voltaggio vs. Antonia Lofaso - Antonia Lofaso wins!  I wanted both of their dishes, even though I am not a fan of donuts. Both chefs really rocked the Randomizer!

Matchup 2: Shirley Chung vs. Kevin Lee - Kevin Lee wins!  I think the judges were bugging just a bit about Shirley's dish; that was too elevated to feed your family for Sunday dinner? Looks like Kevin Lee may be this season's Cinderella story! He also had the highest score in this episode.

Matchup 3: Dale Tarde vs. Tobias Dorzon - Tobias Dorzon wins!  I felt for Tobias! I can't imagine what it is like to have an anxiety attack in the middle of a competition battle. Did he mention kimchi to Simon so that Guy knew to get some kimchi in the fridge? Yes, his dish was massive and I would eat every bit of it...

Matchup 4: Maneet Chauhan vs. Eric Adjepong - Maneet Chauhan wins! I see that Maneet is somewhat polarizing in her TOC appearances; I was still rooting for her, though.  Yes, Eric dropped the ball on this dish. While it was elevated, it certainly wasn't decadent. Better luck next year!

Come on Randa! I have pork belly in my fridge and I was looking forward to seeing a different way of preparing it...

Agreed. I have no real favorites so far, but I don't dislike anyone yet either. And maybe they got the memo we're sick of social media influencers?

I think Rod and Leticia (NFL and wife) are going to be the team to beat. But I was surprised how well boyfriends Ricky and Cesar did. I think the face mask detour was the better option overall but especially for them.

Derek and Shelisa are retired police officers but they are captioned as "grandparents" so I had trouble remembering who they were through the whole episode.

I thought twins Anthony and Bailey would be awful but they actually did a fairly decent job. They raced right through the Roadblock (whichever one did it) and they're both young and fit. They seem to be having a good time too. That goes a long way.

Air force pilots Juan and Shane are also going to be a strong team, they made up a huge time deficit toward the end and are arguably the most fit after Rod.

I have no real feel for anyone else yet, except it was clear right away sibs Maya and Rohan were toast when they got hopelessly lost and Maya refused to stop or turn around. Father/daughter team Chris and Mary aren't long for this race either if this leg was any indication of Chris's stamina.

I admire Rohan for not snapping as Maya drove aimlessly and was not willing to stop for directions. Navigation issues aside, they didn't seem to have any urgency within them. (I was the one one screaming "RAAAAAACE!!!" at the top of my lungs at the tv. Heh.)  Hell, Amber and Vinny drove to the other side of the island and still managed to beat the Siblings to Phil.

I'm late to the party, but I'm all in!

  6. Episode 4: "The Good, The Bad, and The Random!"

The judges: Nancy Silverton, Marcus Samuelsson, Scott Conant

Matchup 1: Michael Voltaggio vs. Crista Luedtke - Michael Voltaggio wins!  I'm cool with MV winning because I don't like CL. His "work outfit" made me chuckle!

Matchup 2: Karen Akunowicz vs. Dale Tarde - Dale Tarde wins!  Randa did these two chefs dirty! I also didn't understand Nancy Silverton's comment about the canned green beans; ma'am, they didn't choose to use them! I didn't realize that this was "Angry Dale" from Top Chef!

Matchup 3: Shota Nakajima vs. Carlos Anthony - Carlos Anthony wins!  My heart broke for Shota who lost by 1 point. I really don't like Carlos Anthony, so I am ever hopeful that Jet will knock him out of the bracket like he did twice before.

Matchup 4: Tiffani Faison vs. Chris Scott - Tiffani Faison wins! Sweet T is growing on me. CS seemed a bit too cocky for this competition; Your dish has to be exceptional to knock out a champion! Tiffani scored the highest in this episode.

These new TOC competitors need to learn how to use Randa to the highest extent in these dishes.

So only one former champion got knocked out in the first round. It's about to get hot in the kitchen!

    Yeah, Shota!

Not only is Antonia "Princess Warrior", she's "Warrior Princess" too -- not everyone can say they have two nicknames!

If I am not mistaken, "Warrior Princess" is Antonia's actual chef nickname. I'm willing to bet that Guy reversed it because that phrase is copyrighted (Xena). At this point, Guy is just going to be the carnival barker that he is.

Episode 3: "Stakes Have Never Been Higher!"

The judges: Nancy Silverton, Ming Tsai, Andrew Zimmern

Matchup 1: Eric Adjepong vs. Stephanie Izard - Eric Adjepong wins!  I've never really warmed to this Iron Chef, so I'm okay with her going home. I really wanted to taste EA's dish. (I have got to stop watching these shows hungry!)

Matchup 2: Antonia Lofaso vs. Casey Thompson - Antonia Lofaso wins!  I figured that CT was way out of her element in the TOC kitchen, plus going against the Princess Warrior who was determined not to lose. CT was going to lose anyway, considering that she didn't utilize the Randomizer to its fullest potential.

Matchup 3: Lee Ann Wong vs. Adam Sobel - Lee Ann Wong wins!   I'm glad Mama Wong took this because AS is just so smug and smarmy for a chef who got 1 win last year. Then to make something he hadn't made before and assume that this would be a winning dish... And Lee Ann Wong got the highest points tonight.

Matchup 4: Maneet Chauhan vs. Nini Nguyen - Maneet Chauhan wins! Nini might have had a chance if Randa hadn't decided to throw a curveball in the protein. Turkey wings are hard to process in 30 minutes. I probably would have fried them without stuffing them. Then Nini almost missed plating her dish! I admire chefs who can turn out a dish in short amounts of time; I couldn't cook at my best if I was being rushed, which is why I don't try out for shows like this.

Well, all the folk I was rooting for won tonight. It's going to be a fun time next week!

Agna Qel'a was gorgeous!  I wanna live there!  It's interesting to see the Northern Water tribe in comparison to the Southern Water tribe, and knowing that this is what the south probably looked like at one time, before the war.  It reinforces what Katara said about the North being frozen, having avoided the war, they haven't had to adapt.  It feels like they did tone down Pakku's sexism from the original and (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here) that his attitude seems less sexist and more just Men are warriors and women are healers and this is just how things are.  And Katara, having grown up in the south, learned firsthand sometimes the warriors aren't around and you have to protect yourself.  Which dovetails into her fight (Ap Kai?) with Pakku.  He defeated her, but she more than held her own and afterwards everyone rushed to her, impressed and saying they never saw anyone fight Pakku and asking about the ice disks (which she learned from earthbenders).  Now she feels like the Katara we've known from the cartoon.

I may have to rewatch this episode; were there any other male Water benders in the NWT besides Pakku?  Hahn and most of the warriors didn't seem to be benders while nearly every woman was a bender. That may have played into the placing of the women in healing huts instead of teaching them to fight.

  9. The thing that I must remember is to have something to eat while I watch this show. I am so hungry right now!

Episode 2: First Round Battles Heat Up!

The Judges: Donatella Arpaia, Andrew Zimmern, Ming Tsai.

Matchup 1: Shirley Chung vs. Joe Sasto - Shirley Chung wins!  Both chefs made similar dishes. Did Joe really think he was going to beat the Dumpling Queen at her own specialty? There are folded pastas, right? Heh. The cajones on that one...

Matchup 2: Tobias Dorzon vs. Kelsey Barnard Clark - Tobias Dorzon wins!  I'm glad he won, because I liked his dish better. Now I want to make spaghetti! LOL!

Matchup 3: Amanda Freitag vs. Darnell Ferguson - Amanda Freitag wins!  There was no fanfare or after match chit chat; they just went through their match and Amanda's dish appealed to the judges more than Darnell's. As soon as they announced her win, they cut to Darnell leaving. Interesting choice of editing here.

Matchup 4: Brooke Williamson vs. Kevin Lee - Kevin Lee wins! By 1 point! Bracket breaking at its finest. I also liked his dish, sauce splash notwithstanding. He gets his props for taking out Brooke and I can't wait for next week!

  10. Not seeing any responses in the other show threads, I thought no one had watched this. I, too, am down for another season!

I loved Lyn's redemption arc. She is now a Cosmic Enforcer; hopefully she will pop in from time to time.

I'm glad Teela (Tri-Sorceress?) was able to bring Preternia back, release her mother from Grayskull, and finally get her man.

I wonder if Adam is going to help in the demolition duties and clean up of the former palace?

Definite improvement over S1, Evil-Lynn continues to be the standout. I swear last season (well, S1.0, didn't come back for 1.5) Teela and Andra how a little something something going on, weird to see them going all fanfic with He-Man/Teela.

Melissa Benoist did a better job voicing Teela, SMG just sounded like SMG, it didn't work last year. I did find it hilarious thar Teela/ He- Man got together since Melissa and Chris are married.  I had no idea William Shatner voiced Keldor, I swore it was J.K Simmons

I found Serpent Teela too funny, she reminded me of Serpentor in G.I. Joe and the new He-Man look was too much like Thor.  I liked the revelation that Skeletor was Keltor and Adam's actual Uncle, turning Eternia into a Democratic Republic didn't feel right, IMO.

Well, as long as Adam doesn't start speaking with an Asgardian accent, I can rock with his new He-Man look. I'm not as deep into He-Man lore; was Keltor ever mentioned before?

Okay, this is an embarrassing question for someone who has watched the animated version more than once, but here goes. How did the Fire Nation know that they hadn't finished off the Avatar in the attack against the Airbenders? And why did they keep looking for him or her if there had been no signs of Avatar activity for 100 years? Was that ever explained? Was it explained in this episode and I missed it?

It wasn't explained in the show. I saw an explanation derived from the A:TLA comic books that Sozin and the Fire Sages determined that the Air Nomad Avatar was still alive when no Water Tribe Avatar showed up. Then to make sure that they disrupted the Avatar Cycle, they targeted the Southern Water Tribe waterbenders. As an aside, if they had gotten Aang, the next Avatar would be weakened since there wouldn't have been any way for the next one to learn Airbending. (The Avatar Cycle is Fire, Air, Water, Earth.)

I thought the Air Nomad Genocide was well done, brutal without becoming gratuitous (we don't need to see everyone getting burned alive) although I almost wish the fight between Sozin and Gyatso would have lasted a little longer, just to see the two masters going up against each other (and since the cartoon showed Gyatso's skeleton surrounded by three dozen dead firebenders, there's all those theories over the years that he pulled the air right out of their lungs).

That would have been cool, but this iteration had Sozin and the airbender children in that room. Gyatso was trying desperately to save the children; I have no doubt that he would have done that to take Sozin out while sacrificing himself.

  13. Yue! The only nitpick for this one was the wig. Surely they could have given her actor a GOT/HOTD type wig that looked a little more natural than the one she had.

I am so sick of Zhao.

Avatar Kuruk had it tough! I do wish that he had told someone of his particular struggles so he isn't remembered as the lazy Avatar who wanted to spend all of his time in the Spirit World.

  14. Have I told you how much I love when a story comes together?  I appreciate the fleshing out of the original story of how messed up as a father Ozai is. Knowing what Zuko went through is one thing; seeing the story fleshed out... Yes, it hit me in my feels more than once this episode.

I'm glad Iroh told Jee what was the cost of saving the lives of Fire Nation soldiers that was designated for sacrifice. Took all the disrespect right out of him!

As someone who hasn't seen the animated series (yeah, yeah, I'll add it to the list), I thought this was a pretty solid adaptation for a newbie,

You have got to see the source material! Get it in DVD/Blu-Ray immediately.

  16. The only nitpick about this episode is the fact that knowing that he is the biggest target in the Fire Nation, Aang and the crew decided not to blend in with the Earth Nation people.  Dude, you are the last Airbender, yes. But why are just strolling around in your Airbender gear knowing you would stick out like a sore thumb?  No head covering or anything... You needed to cover yourself to get in to Omashu; why not maintain the covering while in Omashu?

I will admit that the Zuko/Aang fight through the Marketplace was amusing.

  17. So far, I am impressed.  Yes, I had all the nostalgia feels. This is turning out to be a decent retelling of Aang's story.

ETA: I forgot to mention how much I loved that they featured Avatar Kioshi in the wonderful ATLA opening! And Gran Gran reciting the famous story to Aang of what happened since he disappeared just before the Fire Nation decimated the Airbenders.

    Iliana's gone, rats 😕

That floral arrangement task was kind of diabolical in that the later you got there, the further you had to trudge through the muck to get flowers. The pomelos seemed to always be obligingly floating just around the corner. Speaking of pomelos, how on earth did Robbin and Chelsea's boat not sink with all those pomelos in it? Seems like they had way more than Steve and Anna Leigh did when theirs sank. Must have been the distribution.

I'm willing to bet that the locals just dumped the collected pomelos into different canals in between teams. That would make sense.

I really enjoyed this episode and rooting for Jocelyn & Victor, Greg & John, and Andrea & Malaina.  Those lotus flowers are so beautiful, despite having to swim in the muck for them. I really felt for the team members who lost their shoes.

I loved at the word puzzle the shot of the couple of people puzzling in the foreground and in the background the guy is quietly spelling out Angels and leaves.

I got City of Angels almost immediately, but I am at home on the couch. With pressure on? Yeah, no. I'd be worse than Jared and golden on Big Brother.

TAR is back! This is my favorite reality show.

I liked the majority of the teams, which is good.  I'm rooting for Andrea & Malaina (they are from Philly!), Greg & John, and Jocelyn & Victor.

I figured Alexandra & Sheridan would be the first out. I was yelling "RAAAACE!" at them while they were lollygagging with getting directions from that man with his dog. How are you the first to get to him, yet are the last to leave with the directions?

Liam & Yeremi are real nice to look at.

I don't think anyone should underestimate Rob. He figured out the puzzle with no help. He and Corey should do just fine in the pack.

They really took 50 minutes to figure out the puzzle? Yikes. I blame GWB and that "No Child Left Behind" law. LOL!   I figured that "City Of Angels" just referred to Los Angeles; I learn something new with every season of TAR!

Morgan & Lena are the MVPs of this episode because I wouldn't have eaten the bugs or the spider!  I don't do bugs, alive or fried, but I am definitely a huge arachnophobe. Eat the fried tarantula? Aw Hell Naw.  I would have told my partner, "We don't need that Express Pass. Eff that."

  20. Mabuheeey!!!!  Time for Season 2!!!

Episode 1, "Grand Opening, Part 1":

    Arizona Brandy - Eh.

Matilduh - She is a gorgeous queen! I liked the entrance look.

    Tiny Deluxe - Her face.

Nicole Pardaux - Her face. She paints far older than she looks.

Captivating Katkat - Should have worn what was on the standee.

Ms. Jade So - Looks better as herself than in her entrance look...

I loves me some Mama Pao! We will see which of these girls she will read for filth later on.

I'm sorry, I would have had to go home first if I had to deal with a spider of any kind. Severe arachnophobic here. That poor thing would never touch my face.

Matilduh wins the spider mini challenge!  I don't think I would have picked that particular photo; I know she had better ones.

    Girl group Maxi Challenge!

Main Stage: That Joker lipstick shape didn't do Mama Pao any favors. I loved her dress, though.

I do not like the "Boogsh!" song.  It will not replace "Pop Off Ate!" in my heart.

Runway: "Feather You Like It Or Not"

Matilduh is the pretty one in this group. Her face card doesn't decline! Nicole and Arizona is not in the same class as the others. Ms. Jade was smart not to be naked on the Runway. Smart queen! Arizona Brandy wins the Maxi Challenge (purely on her Runway look, imho).

Nicole and Tiny were in the bottom 2;  Tiny Deluxe stays, Nicole sashays away.

Episode 1, "Grand Opening, Part 2:

Dee Dee Marie Holiday - This one is 19? Heh. I knew she wasn't 19. I was about to read her...

Astrid Mercury - I like the dress.

Hana Beshie - She is cute!

Veruschka Levels - Gorgeous in drag and handsome out of drag. Trade of the Season? I think so!

    Bernie - Legendary.

OV C*nt? - I loved the Entrance look. I guess Mama Pao will not read these queens for their shoes this season!

Now snakes I can do. I'm much better with reptiles than spiders! Veruschka Levels wins the mini challenge and yes, her picture with the snake was fierce.

    Same Girl Group Maxi Challenge!

Main Stage: I do not like this outfit Mama Pao wore in this episode. What happened to the grand beautiful gowns? And that wig was not it.

Still don't like this song. This group was a bit more expressive with their presentation. Bernie was the standout, of course.

    Runway: "Fringe With Benefits"

Astrid looked plain. Dee Dee's look was beautiful with the ornate cape. Bernie was awash in fringe. Hana went campy with Ramen Noodle fringe. OVC went full on Halloween as a haunted tree. Veruschka took the carnival route.  Bernie wins the Maxi Challenge!

Astrid and Hana are the bottom 2; Hana Beshie stays, Astrid Mercury sashays away.
