Would it have been better if Michael declared: “Yep. I’m a God! I order you to fix my machine.”? I did like her little speech about how technology and religion are not mutually exclusive.

Not really. I did like the way she explained this to Ohvahz. I suppose a simpler way would be to say, "The Gods sent me to help you and your people. I am no God. No one else has to die for rain."

The main thing that bugs a bit is that no one remembers that the Prime Directive only applies to Starfleet. Other Alien species have no reason nor are they under any obligation to follow it. Discovery shouldn't be dinged for the PD if they were fixing some technology another alien left behind and letting the locals know how to maintain it when they leave. Also, could none of the other 4 towers be fixed?

I tell you, Michael and Tilly went all in for the race. I would have pretended to take that salt cube and acted my ass off. And to have people that horribly parched run past water during the race AND carry water for the last leg just to be sacrificed to the gods? Brutal.  I also figured that there had to be a sacrificial element to the race simply by the way Ravah's father acted when they wanted to participate.  Did Ravah's mother die that way?

I'm so glad that Rayner took Adira under his wing. I am also glad that he was the one who told them that the time bug wasn't their fault; they probably wouldn't have accepted that from anyone else on the crew. I really like Rayner and it sucks that we will only get 1 season with him.

Pardon me for being light on my lore, but how did they not know he was Breen?

is he the first one ever to go helmetless or something?

This is the first time we the audience has ever seen a Breen without his helmet. We don't know what Breen women look like.

  3. I know some "fans" are moaning about this being a "woo-woo bullshyt" episode (TM Reno). Honestly I was liking the slow down in the treasure hunt.

The editing of this episode is the only thing I could really find fault with. That side story with Culber and Tilly should have gone into another episode; ideally with Stamets finally noticing something is off with his husband.

I like the way Rayner is integrating with Discovery and her crew. Yes, Michael would have taken the time to study Rayner's race and she got to explain why she must take on the dangerous missions to her XO.

So L'ak is Breen. He got an Erigah for cavorting with a lesser being. If that was going to happen, why didn't L'ak just kill his uncle? Unless the uncle did die... They should have made the reasoning for a Blood bounty a little clearer.

I wonder if Michael and Book will get back together?

I am glad that Moll shut down that "we's family!" trip Book was trying to place on her. Just out of curiosity, was Cleaveland Booker IV's death the reason he never got back to Moll and her mother?

The ISS Enterprise. This is why I don't watch trailers and sneak peeks; I totally geeked out when I saw her!

Is this the first Mirror episode where we don't run into any Mirror Counterparts?

I liked this episode. Over the history of Star Trek there have been a bunch of episodes where characters bounce around in time but this still felt unique since it was three characters bouncing around together.

I wish we could have seen Lorca again although it was cool to see Airiam.

The Krenim Barking Spider was way too loud! Adira almost heard it and Stamets heard it instantly which was a nice touch. Stamets knows what his Engineering section is supposed to sound like and he automatically knew that thing wasn't supposed to be there.

Brave of Moll to tell their contact that they poisoned the thing he is holding onto with a poison that was used on her people. If I were that dude, I would have thrown that brick of latinum at her face after she said that.

Time Travel shenanigans always give me a headache (TM Janeway).  I did like how Stamets saw the spider immediately. My arachnophobia would have gotten us killed! What I didn't understand is how Zora didn't immediately sense the spider's presence...

It must have been harrowing for Michael to face her younger self and knowing she would have to fight her. Linus telling her that red is her color made me chuckle. Does his people have experience with time travels? The fact that he was the only one to sense that this was Michael, but not his Michael was a nice touch. This was also a hell of a way for Rayner to learn how being connected to your crew could make the difference between life and certain death.

I wonder if L'ak and Moll took the pieces Michael already had? How would they know where to go next? (Actually, they could have gotten the information Discovery already had from the unauthorized message.) I like that L'ak and Moll aren't as unintelligent as they seemed; but they would still have to explain how she got into that Trill ceremony undetected...

Airiam!! I wonder if it is the same actress? It's a nice touch since we won't see Nilsson this season.

ETA: Let's not forget the connection to that Short Trek! I'm going to watch it again.

Maneet C. is a great chef, but... I will forever look slightly askew at the judging because based on the field of chefs, even with the large group this year, it's always fairly obvious when she is cooking.

Maneet is a great chef period. It may have seemed obvious to us, but the only finale judges that may have had an inkling would have been either Cat Cora or Lorena Garcia. Plus, Maneet didn't always go Indian in her choice of dishes or her opponent decided to try Indian flavors in their dishes to counteract Maneet.

I believe Guy when he says that the judges are kept away from knowing who the contestants are until the very end.

Do you mean Booker is doing an Ahab with Moll, chasing the white whale of family connection? Because he kind of is. Rayner, I think that is unlikely. I think there is a chance that Michael goes off with Booker at the end of the series and Rayner becomes captain of the Discovery, maybe an offside chance.

That is the only thing that bugs me about Book this season. We went through his grief and despair last season about losing his planet and people; It's almost sad that he is seeking a familial connection with someone he has never met. Moll is not going to cozy up to someone carrying her father's codename. I hope that this season is not going to steer Book in that familiar trope of hope/betrayal that usually happens in situations like this one.

  7. Hmmm. Looks like Moll isn't as slow on the uptake as we thought! I'm just curious how she was able to slide into a Trill ceremony without anyone noticing... I guess Moll and L'ak aren't concerned about getting the pieces of the puzzle themselves; I, too, would let Michael and her crew take the hits and just tag along to the end. Is there a mole on Discovery already? Is it Rayner?

Now Commander Rayner's "Getting to know the Crew" sessions went off to a rousing start (*sarcasm*).  I did love that Michael so gently told him to attempt to bond with the Discovery crew because they didn't like him. So we won't see Lt. Commander Nilsson anymore because she went to Voyager. And the neutered tribble now belongs to Lt. Christopher! I wanted to know what Reno and Owosekun (Joanne "Oh Wow!" Owosekun) said to him in 20 words or less. Heh. Tilly only lacked one more word to tell Rayner what she really thought of him.

I’m confused. If they decommissioned the Spore Drive, why is Disco still going to Black Alert?

I think they decommissioned the Spore Drive from being reproduced for other ships. Discovery is the only ship with the Spore Drive.

This - I keep wanting to like this show, but every time I see that stupid belt I want to barf.

How about something like Spice Guru?  After all, as plenty of people have already said, there's enough sexism in the industry and these competitions without perpetuating it by have a woman be a "master."

Master doesn't really need to have a gender connotation. After she bulldozed through her battles using spices and effective Randa management, she deserves a higher station nickname than "Dancing Spice Queen".  If I am not mistaken, didn't one of the judges say that her dish resulted from a Master of Spices? So Maneet can go by the nickname she earned in competition.

  9. Episode 8: "And the Winner is..."  Maneet Chauhan

I was rooting for Jet. I can imagine how painful it must be to miss the prize so many times. Will he have the heart to come back next season? I hope so.

But I was also rooting for Maneet as she entered the finals!! Say what you want about Maneet and her temperament, you cannot deny that she is a beast in the kitchen. I just happened to watch her win her episode of Wildcard Kitchen against Marc Murphy and Shenanigans Malarkey earlier today. BM was as extra as usual and she took all of MM's money!

So how did we get to the first 2-time Champion of TOC?

The judges: Michael White, Cat Cora, Michael Mina, Lorena Garcia, and Eric Ripert. I really enjoyed the finalists losing their composure upon seeing ER.

Matchup 1: Jet Tila vs. Antonia Lofaso - Antonia Lofaso wins!  She edged him on Taste and Presentation. The judges probably didn't like the halibut being 2 ways and how it was presented on the plate.  Anyway, Jet went out a winner and still the only male chef to make it to the semifinals.

Matchup 2: Britt Rescigno vs. Maneet Chauhan - Maneet Chauhan wins! Britt had a solid cook! Maneet is simply too good at utilizing the Randomizer multiple ways in her dishes, so she won this battle handily. Britt will make a fine #2 Seed in TOC 6.

The Final Matchup: Antonia Lofaso vs. Maneet Chauhan - Maneet Chauhan wins! This battle tied on Taste and Presentation. The winning point went to Randa and as soon as Guy said that, I knew Maneet had it in the bag.  Again, no one utilizes the Randomizer like she does. I got that as soon as Guy asked Antonia if she put the cacao pods in anything besides the goat cheese sauce. She should have put it in other aspects of her dishes!  After this historic win, Maneet should now be called the Master of Spices. (Do it Guy!) What also made the win even sweeter for her? It was her birthday! Happy Birthday Maneet! I know that prize money made an awesome gift.

It was a very emotional win and I cried, too!  What I did not like was the cameras staying on Antonia while she was deep in her disappointment. They lingered a bit too long and I was so glad Hunter didn't intrude upon Antonia in that moment.

Hopefully the restaurant industry is taking note of this competition and changes the way women chefs are treated. Blind judging in competitions should be the way to go so we can really see who is the best in the kitchen. (Gender Wars! Yes, I am instigating. Heh.)

Question: Both Amber and Angie weren’t carrying packs, but so were one or two of the other women, and I think one was Leticia (?). And the men weren’t carrying two packs, just one. Did they decide to pack all their stuff in one bag? Have never seen this before. I’ve seen where a partner will pick up their partner’s pack to help if they were struggling, but don’t remember seeing only one pack per team.
or….my memory is having brain cramps….

I'm more surprised that this wasn't done so much before. I'm willing to bet that once the other racers saw teams with only 1 bag between them, they reevaluated what they were carrying that they probably didn't need.  Plus, it is easier to keep track of 1 bag as opposed to 2 of them.

Ah! I'd actually forgotten about that. It may be what I recall. But seems like her sacrificing herself I recall reacting to. Oh well...

Perhaps you are thinking of Lt. Airiam, who did sacrifice herself in Season 2?  Then the actress (Sara Mitich) became Lt. Commander Eva Nilsson, who we haven't seen yet in Season 5.

Realistically, it should be a nightmare.  We've seen Rayner doesn't particularly respect authority, and now he's accepted a demotion to work under Michael.  When Michael said she didn't want a "yes" man, I wondered why she didn't consider the smarter question, i.e. "if it came down to it, and Rayner didn't agree with her decision, would he still support her?"

I don't think that Rayner was demoted. Saru is a Captain who agreed to be Michael's Number One on Discovery. Rayner is coming out of his very short retirement to work on Discovery.

ETA: I don't think not having Rayner's support will hurt Michael. She is Discovery's Captain and is beloved among the crew. Rayner is the outsider here and the question will be how will he fit in with the Discovery crew to get things done.

They keep reminding us that this is Saru's last day. If this were a cop show he'd be about to retire and then he'd die.

Yeah, it did seem like that. But we are going to get to the wedding that was teased during the end of the first episode, so nothing better happen to Saru or T'Rina...

I loved the interaction between Michael and Saru. They have truly come a long way since they first met. His lines, in particular, gave me weepies; especially the one about Michael not needing another "him" but another Number One.

How long are minutes in the 32nd Century? They surely seemed to be taking their time recording the Romulan message at the stone. Me and Tilly were yelling for them to hurry up almost simultaneously!

    14 hours ago, PurpleTentacle said:

If you know that your enemies have to come back to the planet to get the next clue, first you do destroy that stupid stone. It's something a romulan scratched into a stone, not some priceless artifact. And second, you set a trap to catch them there. Instead they just leave and let those guys find the next clue? How are these characters this insanely stupid?

Overall this was back to being boring and overly speechy. So after the promising first episode, back to its old form...

Were you expecting them to be geniuses? Moll and L'ak don't know what they have; they just know that Starfleet and other folk really wanted that diary. Of course they are going to go to Betazed not knowing that they are missing vital information, like a piece of a map. I don't think that they will go back to the necropolis unless someone else tips them off about the map pieces. You can't really call Michael a Mary Sue for knowing about Romulan texts when she was raised adjacent to Vulcans and Romulans.

I found it quite strange that the Federation Council (?) bumped Rayner off of his ship because of what happened on Q'Mau. Yes, he sorta kinda placed an encampment in peril, but he ultimately helped saved them in the end.  Did Rayner expect Michael to throw him under the bus openly at the hearing? I am fascinated and interested to see how he and Michael will interact on Discovery now. At least he will get to see the mission through to the end.

  14. Aah. I'm ready to fly with my captain and the DISCO crew for this finale season!

Since Dr. Kovich is still skulking around, I will expect to see a cameo from Emperor Georgiou to slide us into the Section 31 movie (still should be a proper series!!!).

Is there a glossary defining the numerous directives? Seems like we get new ones every season.

I'm digging Captain Rayner. He seems to be the charming scoundrel type of captain, as opposed to being an overbearing jerk of one.

I also liked Fred. No, we will never be free of Soongs and their legacy work. It is weird that they think that Fred is dead as opposed to being deactivated. Is it that he is so old that he could be permanently damaged? I expected Culber and Stamets to reboot him easily.

Again, I must ask this; is Admiral Vance the only Starfleet Admiral?  I always have to remember that the Federation and Starfleet are 2 separate entities in the 32nd Century!  I like that Admiral Vance also got to join in on the mission after Kovich shut him out of the intel.

Saru and T'Rina are engaged! They better let Saru have his Happily Ever After or I will riot!

    Let's Fly!

  15. Episode 7: "The Great 8 Face Off!"

The judges: Cat Cora, Rocco DiSpirito, Jonathan Waxman (they misspelled his name on the chyron!)

Matchup 1: Jet Tila vs. Mei Lin - Jet Tila wins!  Yet another Champion bit the dust! I like Mei Lin, but I think this is finally Jet's time to go all the way. She is a fierce competitor, but you just can't beat Jet on taste.

Matchup 2: Britt Rescigno vs. Amanda Frietag - Britt Rescigno wins!  Amanda got dinged on her use of Randa; otherwise, she might have taken it. It was cute to see the "Angry Italian" dissolve in a puddle as Rocco ate her entire dish. I wonder if the judges get to take their tasted dishes home as leftovers?

Matchup 3: Antonia Lofaso vs. Kevin Lee - Antonia Lofaso wins!  That porridge took Kevin out! We will see how much better he will be in Season 6.  Now Antonia has to face Jet in the Final Four.

Matchup 4: Tobias Dorzon vs. Maneet Chauhan - Maneet Chauhan wins!  I'm glad Tobias had a solid cook; once Guy tasted the curry and noted that there was no sour in it, I knew Tobias wouldn't win. I finally got an alternative way to make pork belly! I know Maneet isn't many people's cup of tea, but she came in on her A game this episode despite her Randa nightmares.

One previous TOC champion standing as we head to the Final Four! I'm going to root for Jet Tila to win TOC 5!

They must not have been allowed to switch even though there were other water taxis that teams arriving at the dock after them were allowed to take.

That was specifically said on the clue that they were not allowed to switch water taxis. I thought it was odd until Team Walla Walla had their issue. They probably only had enough of them for the teams on the leg.

The abuelas didn't taste any of the food presented to them. Presentation and the food cooked properly was the only considerations for the task. Not to mention it was raining on some of the teams and they didn't even bother to cover the food.

  17. Wow. Who designed this leg? Those stairs are ridiculous to behold! I would have been plastered to the mountainside only looking at the steps. They had to go all the way up AND walk back down? Eeesh.

Bon Voyage to Team Twins. It was so painful watching them futz around before actually doing anything. They may be cool human beings, but not at all prepared or able to compete for TAR.

Karishma has mad Chihuahua energy. Kishori has the patience of a saint to withstand the near constant yapping and running. I would have been told my cousin/sister to shut her trap!

I feel for Sean; I have a fear of falling from great heights. If there is nothing anchored to the side for me to hold on to, I would have been crawling downstairs backwards! Michelle knew how to deal with him, because she could not leave him on those steps. I can't say that I would have been so calm with my partner plopping on the ground and refusing to move like a toddler...

I don't have too much of an issue with Rod & Leticia. I'm waiting for her to ditch the makeup and the jewelry so she can raaaace. I really don't like Rod being so far ahead of her when on foot; you need to keep your partner within eyesight when navigating a strange place!

Derek & Shelisa - typical married couple. He does tend to get snappy with her every so often. When they were cooking, I could see why Shelisa didn't allow him to be in the kitchen with her; he stayed getting in her way!

I was so concerned about the racers slipping on rain slicked tiles at the coffee farm. Then to see Juan (or Shane) nearly unalive himself getting to Phil... Imma need them to stop that or not put the pit stop map on a cliff!

I'm not built for this type of leg. I would have cried and screamed non-stop. I was totally triggered despite the beauty of Colombia.

I don’t really understand why even Amanda herself thought her winning with a burger would be a legitimate bone of contention between her and Tiffani, to the point where it might test their friendship (such as it is - no idea if they are truly friends or on-camera, fellow-Chopped-judge friends, The End.)

Well, Sweet T appeared to be quite salty on camera at her loss... You can generally tell how friendly the chefs are with each other with the talking head segments.

  19. Episode 6: "Wild Card High Jinks!"

The judges: Lorena Garcia, Rocco Dispirito, Jonathan Waxman

Matchup 1: Tiffani Faison vs. Amanda Frietag - Amanda Frietag wins!  Another Champion bites the dust! I believe that Tiffani is done with TOC; she has her belt and ring. I wonder if she will still be friends with Chef AF...

Matchup 2: Jet Tila vs. Carlos Anthony - Jet Tila wins!  I'm so glad Jet won! I really don't like the arrogance from CA considering that Jet beat him twice before! Show some respect to the Jetster.

Matchup 3: Britt Rescigno vs. Marc Murphy - Britt Rescigno wins!  Honestly, I would have let the pumpkin go, but Britt was able to rock it to her advantage.  MM also seems a bit under the caliber of the other competing chefs. He probably could have utilized his time better in TOC as a judge.

Matchup 4: Mei Lin vs. Lee Ann Wong - Mei Lin wins!  Listen, the reigning champ is a machine! I can see how everyone is not too keen to go up against her. I think the only thing that could stop her from winning a second belt is Randa...

Only two previous TOC champions remain! I'm going to reserve my call on who may win TOC 5 until after next week.

I was confused as well; being that she was smaller and more adept at jumping rope, Michelle would have killed that challenge.  The cousin killed me for barrelling straight into the Roadblock without completely reading the clue.

  21. Ooow weee. This pack of racers... There's only 4 teams with any get up and go! about them. The rest of them, just strolling around the island like they have all the time in the world! This was so stressful to watch and not scream "RAAAAAACCCE!" at the top of my lungs. I might have lost my voice if I did that. Heh.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I'm noticing the Racers' backpacks more than normal.  A few observations...

In general, the backpacks are smaller than I've seen in other seasons.  Lots of what I would call a "day pack", slightly larger than a school backpack.

The pilots have the largest backpacks of all the racers.  I think that's sort of funny because a) they're guys and b) they're military.  You'd think they could pack for 2 weeks in a shoebox.  The twins also have larger backpacks.  These guys look like they would wear the same outfit for 2 weeks in normal life, so again, it sort of surprises me.

The nurse anesthetists have one pack between the two of them.  And it's a small one at that.  I think it's good to pack light, but if you're packing that light why not split it between the two of you?

The woman in the Double Dutch couple has a length of rope in the side pocket of her backpack.  I find that strangely weird.

Non-backpack observations:  I normally love a super-fan team, but damn, Team Walla Walla is super annoying.

I do not understand the moms' tactic for finding the right flag string.

Totally agreed on the 2 observations I highlighted; that a team has only one backpack between them is a good idea! I have never seen that before.  And I wonder what bricabrac the teams might be carrying that they don't need; Shelisa (Yellow Married Couple) dumped puzzle books that popped out of her backpack last week. Michelle (Red Double Dutch Couple) might have just wanted to jump rope in the downtime.

Team Walla Walla? Might be the next to go if the next leg was as strenuous as this one.

So many teams not reading clues, Team Twins dropping their clues, and so many teams not willing to ask for directions!  So Derek and Shelisa was the only team openly offered a map?  I guess the other teams didn't go by that stand with the helpful owner...

  22. Episode 5: "The Super 16 Step Up!"

The judges: Marcus Samuelsson, Lorena Garcia, Scott Conant

Matchup 1: Michael Voltaggio vs. Antonia Lofaso - Antonia Lofaso wins!  I wanted both of their dishes, even though I am not a fan of donuts. Both chefs really rocked the Randomizer!

Matchup 2: Shirley Chung vs. Kevin Lee - Kevin Lee wins!  I think the judges were bugging just a bit about Shirley's dish; that was too elevated to feed your family for Sunday dinner? Looks like Kevin Lee may be this season's Cinderella story! He also had the highest score in this episode.

Matchup 3: Dale Tarde vs. Tobias Dorzon - Tobias Dorzon wins!  I felt for Tobias! I can't imagine what it is like to have an anxiety attack in the middle of a competition battle. Did he mention kimchi to Simon so that Guy knew to get some kimchi in the fridge? Yes, his dish was massive and I would eat every bit of it...

Matchup 4: Maneet Chauhan vs. Eric Adjepong - Maneet Chauhan wins! I see that Maneet is somewhat polarizing in her TOC appearances; I was still rooting for her, though.  Yes, Eric dropped the ball on this dish. While it was elevated, it certainly wasn't decadent. Better luck next year!

Come on Randa! I have pork belly in my fridge and I was looking forward to seeing a different way of preparing it...
