  1. I'm currently reading Pamela Smith Hill's book on LIW. I'm in the chapter where it seems to be apparent that Laura's daughter, Rose, totally lifted ideas and content from Laura's Pioneer Girl to write her own novel Let the Hurricane Roar. This seems to be done without Laura's knowledge or consent. You can almost feel Laura's sadness and disappointment in her daughter. She felt that she could now never write her novel for adults because it would seem like she would be the one who "stole" ideas.

I've always been a little on the fence with regards to Rose, but I'm now firmly on Laura's side. I know that we will probably never know the true relationship between Mother and Daughter, but there just doesn't seem to be any other way to interpret Rose's actions. It screams of jealousy of her Mother's new successes. She knew of her Mother's desire to publish PG for an adult audience.

Does anyone else get this feeling or have I totally done an disservice to Rose?

  2. Thank you so much for the recommendations. I like to read books based on recommendations rather than just by running across one. I have a gift card at Amazon and now I know what I'm going to do with it.

I hope this forum keeps going as others receive their copies of Pioneer Girl. Others' points of view is so interesting. This read-a-long has been so enjoyable. Please keep it up.

  3. I just finished my copy of Pioneer Girl. I genuinely loved this book. I just wish the book didn't end. While I have read The First Four Years and On the Way Home, Pioneer Girl opened my eyes to the idea that what I took for facts shows there are other stories to be told.

Any recommendations on what I should read next?

  4. I sort of view both King Ecbert and Emperor Charles as the same in that both would willingly sacrifice their child to the cause EXCEPT Ecbert would do it for the long cause of advancing his views where Charles would do it to save his own skin. This makes both of them bastards. Ecbert is magnificent and Charles is just, well, a bastard.

  5. It probably is Rollo since how better to meet your future wife then having her almost behead you during your first "date" as it were.  :-)

But really the raised axe and pause stuff always means there is a "Wait!" coming at the last second.

But yeah the hair looks lighter but it is pulled forward.  Maybe Rollo was secretly dying his outer hair brown cause brown

was the blonde of the day, heh.

Maybe it's the giant guy who came with Kalf.

  6. Our household loved Rome on HBO as well. We were very disappointed when it was cancelled. They had so much more story to tell.

Was anybody else here a big fan of HBO's "Rome"?

Reason I ask is because that's the last TV series I've liked as much as this one.   And there's something about "Vikings"  that's reminiscent of "Rome" - both shows really transport me back to their respective times and places.

  7. Happy day! I just received my copy of PG today. It's a beautiful book. I agree with others that this is going to take awhile to get through. But, I view that as a very good thing. So far I'm just at the "Acknowledgements" section because I keep skipping ahead to check out all the wonderful pictures.

  8. I hope Rollo notices that Siggy is even missing from the Hall when they return from Wessex. Hopefully they all see that Siggy sacrificed herself for Ragnar's children. I sort of feel guilty now because I always felt that Siggy had something to do with Lagertha losing her baby son earlier.

I guessed I missed the explanation of what happened between Siggy and Rollo. I know they were basically using each other, but I had always hoped there was an affection between them. What happened between the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3? There was clearly something different when the new season started.

  9. Floki acts like a cross between Captain Jack Sparrow and the hunchback character in the old movie Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder.

Third it. Floki is too flakey for me.

  10. OK, I can't even wait until this new episode is finished airing to talk about this couple from Dallas to Tennessee. The wife is OK (even though she refers herself as the CEO of the house, ugg). The husband is a total tool. How many times did he say "you know how I hate plastic houses" when he is talking about vinyl siding. And if the kitchen didn't have SS appliances, oh well, he just couldn't deal. And don't get me started with his demand that the floors be wide planked hardwood. The floors in the house they chose had beautiful hardwood , but narrow planks. OMG He just didn't know if he could make that compromise.

  11. OK, I'm on. Board with everyone about Green's death. This has dragged on way too long. Arrest someone, anyone, but move along.

Here is what Edit SHOULD have done in regards to Marigold. Edith and Rosamund should have made up a story where Edith meets (while she is traveling in Europe) and falls in love with a widower who has an infant. The mother could have died in childbirth leaving the father to raise his baby daughter all alone. Tragically the widower also dies in some kind of accident and there is no one to take care of the baby. Edith decides to bring the baby home with her so the baby is not sent to an orphanage. She could even adopt the child. Edith could then have her baby with her and live at Downton. Edith might even been perceived as heroic for taking in the baby to give it a life of privilege. She wouldn't have to hide her feelings for the baby either.

  12. Saw Castle Hunters this afternoon. I had to laugh at the couple looking in Ireland. He discovered that he was Irish and now wants to raise his daughter there. Seems like they didn't' really have enough budget though. What really had me going was the complaints on how "unsafe" the castle would be for their toddler. How in the world would she be able to navigate the stairs etc. They also complained on how dark the castles were. Well hell, did they really think ancient castles had floor to ceiling windows? Did they ever stop think glass wouldn't even been invented?

The couple in France came across a little snooty IMO. How could you walk into a place like that and the first thing you say is "we'll have to replace the carpets and wallpaper". It sounded like they were laying the groundwork for talking the asking price down.

Since both of the couple's are still waiting for an answer to their offer, it reminded me more of a promotional add for the areas than serious house hunting.

  13. OK, I just saw the episode with the young couple with a toddler looking for a house in a historic part of Pennsylvania. The husband wants an old farmhouse that he can fix up to save money and the wife wants "turn key". The narrator said the average home is around $500,000. OF COURSE, this couple only have $300k and they still want the moon and the stars. Right off the bat, the wife shows us what she is all about. As they are walking up to the front door of the first house to meet their realtor, he is saying this is a craftsman. The wife says "what?". He repeats "it's a craftsman". She says "I'm sorry, I can't hear you because of all the street noise" as the camera pans to the street where ONE FREAKING CAR GOES SLOWLY BY! What the .....?

  14. Isn't it amazing how much further the reno budgets go in Waco than on LIOLI or PBro' s? I do have a question. When Jo & Chip show houses to their clients, sometimes the houses are just about ready to fall down. For example, the house they paid $25k for (basically they paid for the property). When they showed the renovated house at the end, they didn't show all of the house. You just know that the other rooms badly needed done as well. So, did they just not show all the work that was done, or they stopped renovating when the money ran out? Most of the clients have a hard budget so do they just wait until they save up more money? You know they got so much more for their money when on the show so when they finally are ready to continue, it's bound to cost a lot more the second time.

I'm sorry if this seems rambling. I just got up the nerve to ask.

  15. BearCat49, I'm sorry if I came across as judgemental concerning the SD wife. My attempt at "snarky" fell flat. But I really would like to see an update for this couple. Maybe she just received a harsh edit, but she did seem hard to live with for the husband. Hopefully her dream kitchen came out like she wanted. If she truly is this "way", I hope she sees this has a chance for self awareness.

  16. I originally was going to wait for PG from my local library, but I decided that I really wanted a copy to keep for myself. I ordered mine from Amazon today. I don't know how long it will take to arrive, but I couldn't be more excited. I also can't wait for the discussions to begin!

  17. I finally caught the episode of the SD couple. I read posts about her behaviour, but I was still amazed about the way she acted. She has to be in the top 1 percent of HH worst clients. Her demands concerning the toilets/tubs NOT being used is just WOW. Do you think she's never had a nature call while shopping or visiting friends? Her F &F must be horrified. No wonder the husband wants to turn the garage into cigar smoking space. He really just wants to be in a place where she won't be. I would like to see a WATN episode about them. I wonder if they will still be together in 5 yrs or so. What's the odds for their future? Please, please HGTV,do a follow-up on this gem.
