The whole blue checkmark conversation was hilarious. Karen saying "I'm innocent!" and that she was going to call Apple Pay are why I can't quit her.

The poor waiter during the Who Swallows conversation.

I blame "Sex and the City" for women having these totally cringe and immature conversations out loud in public. The "girls" and their brunch talks that were supposedly so revolutionary at the time because we'd never seen that on TV. Well, we'd never seen it in real life either because it's trashy behavior, but somehow now women especially after a couple of drinks think it's ok to shout this stuff out in a public space. Not classy, "ladies".

I too felt bad for the waiter. I always feel bad for the servers who have to deal with the Real Housewives, but they agree to it in advance.

The Blue Check conversation was hilarious, the funniest thing this season for me, because it seemed real. Like, not at all pre-planned. Karen seemed truly surprised and even admitted she was wrong. She was getting up to go call Apple Pay!😂

The best part of the episode for me was watching Karen freak out about the chicken.

I am with Karen on "the dirty bird"!

My grandma had chickens and to me they were always dirty, scratching around in the shit-spotted barn yard, yuck. The chickenshit bingo board, actually the whole place, looked nasty! I can't believe Karen did not turn on her heel and leave immediately. If contractually obligated she should have pulled out a blue mask and worn it. Total Karen move and I would have howled. (I still keep one in my purse for just such occasions.) The Grand Dame owns a farm but she is above chickenshit bingo.

And speaking of, yes, Karen is coming across well this season, so far as I've seen. I'm also bummed that Karen and I are the same age and I didn't hear or think of "Triple 20" last year for my birthday celebrations.

The BS of Seasons 6, 7 & 8 is all because of Robyn & Juan's sham relationship and Robyn's fear of being exposed.

I just cannot anymore with Robyn and Juan. That backyard wedding might have been a legally binding event (I have my doubts) but Juan didn't consider the vows he spoke as binding in any way, shape, or form.

They are "bonded" but in such an unhealthy way. Robyn's choice not to let go of him and move on in her life is pathetic, annoying, and now sooooo boring to watch.

I'm only now watching S8. It's the only Housewives show I still bother with (because I live in DC) and I barely knew it had come back, much less that the entire season and the reunion eps had already aired.

Ooooh, they are at Laduree! I love their tea and some of the flavors of macarons! I have been to that Georgetown store (and in Paris), the manager is legit French, ooh, la, la!

I geek out about any HW locations I have actually been to.

I live in DC and geek out when I recognize places, too. Karen and Rayvin have been filmed in a spa my friends own, and that new location of The Joint that Mia opened is just up the street from my home! I hadn't kept up with that season and when I saw it here in the neighborhood I wondered if it was one she owned. Then saw the episode and was bummed I hadn't known about the opening event so I could have wandered by the cameras. I would have given a little wave at y'all. 😉

Sometimes the show gets so dull that I only watch for the B-roll of the various DMV* locations. 😁😂

*ETA: DMV is local's lingo for The District/Maryland/Virginia.
It caught on 10-12 years ago, but I still think "Department of Motor Vehicles".

I have to admit I didn't look at the product line until just now.  I didn't pay attention to when they showed his pillows or whatever on the show.

Looks like okay stuff but horribly overpriced.

If I was going to pay $70 for a couch pillow or $65 for sweatshirts, I'd look at stuff on other sites with a lot of reviews.

Clearly the branding is what allows them to try to get a price premium.

I didn't see a clearance section, like you see with just about EVERY clothing site.

Are they selling so well that they don't have to discount from those inflated prices?

What else can it be but fan support when Craig is modeling most of the merchandise?  A few with Paige but it's all him.

What kind of lemming buys overpriced crap because some third-rate reality TV show personality is hocking them?

Clearly enough lemmings to be lucrative.

All of these reality show "celebs" figured out they needed to use their (often temporary and fleeting) fame to put out a "line" of some product and hopefully hit the big money like Bethany on Real Housewives of New York. Or for someone like Kim Zolciak, they manage to put out a (highly auto-tuned) "hit" song.

Most of these celebs find some product or business to slap their name on and promote, which means all the shows have become a showcase of infomercials.

Wasn't his former lover an older than him widow?  Gentlemen had affairs with widows and married ladies quite commonly and as long as both parties were discreet this was accepted by society and wouldn't ruin anybody involved.

The location makes the difference too - the hotel was a big no-no for a young lady who is presumed to be a virgin to be meeting and kissing a man there. Raikes really put Marian on the spot there.

Larry has been established as a rather nice young gentleman who I doubt is in the habit of seducing virgins like some romance novel rake. No, they were both carried away and like every one here in this forum I think they are headed towards marriage.

I believe at one point Larry's lover mentioned to him "sowing wild oats". She was more realistic about their chances for marriage although she let herself get carried away by love/emotion.

Wealthy young men of that era had "affairs" before marriage and it was accepted as part of their life before settling down to marriage. Their brides of course had to be virgins. Again, read Wharton's "Age of Innocence" for examples.

[snip]I think a lot of people on this board might enjoy The Age of Innocence (both the movie and the book written by Edith Wharton), which takes place in New York high society at about exactly the same time as The Gilded Age. The movie has an outstanding cast (which includes Reverend Dead Poet himself, Robert Sean Leonard in a small role) and is really beautifully done. Highly recommended.

I was also going to recommend Wharton's book or the film for those who want to understand more of "the times" when this is set and how people in high society behaved. For example, how they attend the theater to enjoy the music or the play, but more importantly to some is to see and be seen, and to give or attend a big party afterward. IIRC in an early scene the society hostess who is throwing a big party after a performance is seen leaving the theater early, as she always does, to attend to the final details of her event and be prepared to welcome her guests. In reality, Bertha would probably have left the opera performance early.

Some society people still do this, by the way. Yes, the attend the opera, ballet, symphony to enjoy the performances to whatever level of their interest -- some much more than others -- but many attend so they can dress up and be part of the social scene. Subscribing to a specific box on a specific night every season is still done, and people visit other boxes, etc. during intermission.

John is a likeable character for whom it's easy to root, but the patent nonsense continues to irk. Patent applications are not “accepted;” the primary components of an application are “allowed” or “rejected.” If rejected, those components (called “claims”) can be modified to some degree and sent back to the patent office for another try with argument about why they should be allowed. There’s no indication that that happened here. Moreover, none of this happens quickly, as in the presumed time frame presented here. Also, the issuance of a patent is not, as presented here, not like a large money lottery ticket win. The vast majority of issued patents, i.e., those patent applications allowed by the Patent Office, never make a dime for anyone (other than the patent lawyers and the Patent Office of course). Only some patents make vast fortunes, but those are the ones most well-known. It is nevertheless correct – then and now – that inventors often need savvy business types to monetize their patents, and young Mr. Russell seems like a stand up guy unlikely “steal” the clock invention in a presumed season 3.

And a reliable alarm clock could easily be one of the patents that make a fortune. My friend's grandfather patented a device (I think in the early 1940s) and it made him a multi-millionaire.

Didn’t someone say they started filming the season then aborted it and restarted because Bravo was unhappy with the lack of drama in the completed episodes?  After Scandoval they want infidelity to be the main storyline apparently.

Yes! It was reported a couple of months or more before the season began, and then I forgot all about it. (Because 95% of this show is instantly forgettable.) Apparently the producers gathered the cast and said the footage they had so far was way too dull and they'd have to start filming all over again. It's somewhere back in the Media thread I imagine (no time to look for it).

And THIS mess of nothing is what we got! Imagine how dull the first round was.

END this, Bravo! Cancel it, move Craig to one of the other shows, and wave goodbye to everyone else. All I'll miss is glimpses of Charleston and an occasional visit with Ms. Patricia with Whitney snarking about her decor.

  13. Shep is the kind of alcoholic who will get more angry and bitter as he ages. If you think he's not an alcoholic I'd say he's not fully addicted yet, but his "bargaining" down to drinking only beer and thinking that's going to solve his drinking problem is typical alcoholic behavior.

He's also way too old and yet at the same time way too immature to be a good partner for Taylor (or any woman), but we all know this. She's messed up in some way to want this relationship to continue when he's treated her so badly for the whole world to see OR if she's subjecting herself (or her "character" is maybe how she imagines it) to such treatment just to be on a reality TV show. Being a dental technician isn't glamorous but is a solid profession that pays the bills. She could meet a nice guy and be treated well. The whole "girls like bad boys" BS needs to be put down once and for all. Emotionally healthy girls don't waste their time on "bad boys".

Yes, very much the way the upper crust was and to an extent still is.

And not just the upper crust. Plenty of people still admire those who have high income/wealth and come from certain families even if it's clear they are bad people.

I wish Craig would fully mature and remove himself from this show.  Just go off the show, build your pillow business (8 figures....$10 million+!!), and find yourself a sweet gal to start a life with.

Enough with the tiny, snarky brunettes.  I didn't like Naomi, and I've never liked Paige.

Shep gonna Shep.  He'll be that 85 year old man chasing "young" 55 year-olds at the golf course community, while sloshing a bourbon on the rocks.

I second that emotion that Craig should now retire from Bravo and find a nice girl to marry and have children with. He said that's what he wants and I think that's where his happiness lies. What a way to win over Shep, too, end up with a fine and  respectable wife and life.

It's not like he doesn't have practicing law to fall back on if/when the pillow business slows down. He's probably smart enough to invest wisely now and get some "mailbox money", too. Get off reality TV, build a great relationship, and make a good life for himself.

Craig: In a world full of T-Ravs and Sheps, be a Cameran.

And Oscar looked every day of 40 when he tried to talk to Gladys outside the church. Although yes, 18 and 40 was not an age disparity that society would have blinked at in that era, something about the actor (and how he's made up) makes him look so skeevy.

Wouldn't 2nd and 3rd sons who have less money (or was it so in the US?) want to marry a heiress? Instead, a widower whose first wife was rich would probably be the best option.

I would prefer a man with a middle class profession, a doctor or a layer (they all aren't like Raikes) who can support a family but Agnes doesn't approve.

American society was not like English society. Wealthy sons, even first sons, often went into banking or the law. They were considered genteel professions. See for example Newland Archer in Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence".

Agnes didn't disapprove of Raikes because he was a lawyer but because he had no money and no "breeding". He didn't come from a fine family and she suspected his goal was to use marriage to Marian to get himself a position in society.

CRAIG! (100 % agree with you on all fronts!)

I love the idea of ditching all of the current cast -- except Craig -- and starting with new people. The producers would need to reveal that on camera because if it happened Shep would not even be able to handle it, and that would be freaking hilarious.

In the beginning Craig was treated by Shep as the poor buddy whose drinks he always had to pay for. Shep enjoyed putting Craig down on camera. Shep even named his dog after Craig! Remember how jealous and angry Shep was when Craig got the highest bid at the bachelor auction? He has taunted Craig that he couldn't pass the bar and laughed at his business ideas. Yet by every measure, if you look back now, Craig has come out ahead of Shep!

Sure, Shep has that "mailbox money", and he's put some of his Bravo money into a renovated beach/party house (yawn), but he also has a failed hot dog bar and a string of failed relationships that fizzled because he never seemed to put effort into them or even respect his partner. Craig has a lovely house, a successful business, and what seems to be a fun, stable relationship. He's also younger and better looking than Shep, who is a Peter Pan on the way to being another Thomas Ravenel.

For me it would be the icing on the cake if Shep were dumped by Bravo and Craig was last OG man standing on Southern Charm.

Well, people can have plastic surgery but you can't surgically add 2" to your height. I don't think he's so bad. Whitney's ridiculous behavior was the best part of this boring episode.  Too much of him is too much, but sometimes, you need more!

Oh yes, Paige, the next great fashionista of our time was unable to make the trip.  With her high demand in the realm of haute couture, she just couldn't be pulled away from her next Amazon drop of cheap ass, fugly clothes from China.

Olivia showed more fun and personality this episode than she has during her entire time on this show combined.  Was she drunk?  Can she drink more of whatever that was at all times moving forward?  Can she give some to Taylor?

Great point - cracking up 😂

Whitney turns out to be the most interesting/entertaining character of the season. I truly would enjoy seeing more of him. He's polished off a lot of his embarrassing behavior and has mostly turned it into self-deprecating sarcasm or pretending (for laughs) that everything is beneath him.

Patricia very much has been a well-connected person, and had a career of her own. Google her. Until this show she wasn't a "celebrity" you would read about in the tabloids, she was a socialite who was well known in the charity circles.

The young man is dead now, and his family and friends grieve their loss. Maybe it's completely true that he suffered from Lyme disease starting when he was young and turned to drugs to handle his stress and pain. That's a tragedy. Addiction is a nightmare for the person and all those who love them, however it begins, and too often it ends in early death.

Recall seeing the episodes filmed during Covid shutdown where they were being idiots about and going out, visiting each other, catching it and passing it on. NOBODY CARES is the theme of the season!  Didn’t they “redo” the whole season because after they taped it, they found it super boring.. so they taped the whole season again??  And THIS was deemed the more entertaining version??!!

Yes, I think he meant the sun bears which when standing up look even more like humans in bear suits than panda bears do.

WOW. I totally forgot that rumor that at least the first few episodes of this season were deemed so dull that Bravo ordered reshoots. If true, this season is truly scraping the bottom of the barrel. I guess that's when they dredged up stories like Bra-gate and the dumb "did they or didn't they" Austen-Taylor crap.

The scene with Hudson was heartbreaking. Poor kid.

It was heartbreaking yet I also wondered why it was included. Yeah, it humanizes Madison but does she really want her kid shown crying and bleeding as the victim of such an attack on national TV? I mean, the other kid BIT him several times??? I sense a pending lawsuit or at least a serious talk with the other parents, certainly not a scene on a dumb reality show. Surprised Madison didn't take photos for evidence before he was cleaned up, though maybe she did it off camera.
