Flower is so sweet and understanding and compassionate. But I have to say, I agree with someone who said last week that they are not feeling the Flower-Thor romance.  They are just saying lines to each other, I am not seeing any chemistry there.  Maybe it's a conscious choice on the show's part?  I mean, we've seen Flower's doubts about Thor, now she brings Nancy into the relationship...

I agree and thought that she was going to break up with Thor before he confessed to her.

I'm talking maybe 30 more minutes if that. I wouldn't say I didn't not like it, but they didn't quite stick the landing.

Something was off for sure. I have a whole TED Talk ready that I’ll keep to myself about the writing or maybe editing of this episode. The plot at the village simply did not make sense.

I loved the series. I loved the character development. I loved the scenery and the imagery. I love where we ended in the story. I am happy to end with everyone paused on a precipice, waiting for the next thing to happen, in the moment where all dreams could come true.

    They stuck the landing!

But the writing went awry. I’m not sure what happened with that script. Like I don’t even know where to start with the Toranaga/Blackthorne/Erasmus/Seppuku/FishermanSpy debacle.

Luckily, I care more about emotions and character relationships than plot. :)

Was that the end? Toranaga just says what's going to happen?

Blackthorne has a dream… Toranaga has a dream… We know what happens in the book, we know what happened in history, but the show ends with a boat partially ashore and Anjin-sama telling everyone to rest now.

We can imagine whatever we like happening next to these characters.

All of the Ushers being dead could be a major complication. I don't see Juno ruthlessly enforcing extreme prenups the way any of the blood family might have. Bill the Fitness Dork probably at least retained ownership of the house and his own fitness brand, though maybe without the kind of cross promotional support it would have had when paired with Goldbug. Julius might be out of luck, though—Leo doesn't strike me as the sort to have provided for him.

At least Bill has the notoriety now that Goldbug failed and can build his own brand. If Juno dissolved the Fortunato enterprise I wonder if that automatically voids the BILLT copyright. I am sure she would sign it over to him anyway.

Plenty of agents would happily shepherd him to a new fame. I think Bill escaped the happiest. He didn’t see Tammy break down and her death wasn’t THAT gory. And no living creatures were involved.

I gave up on trying to make the dates work when Mike Flanagan expected me to believe Henry Thomas could play a character that was in pre-school in late 1979.

Henry Thomas was born in 1971 playing a guy born in 1975 or 1976. He doesn’t look like a California Early 50s but he looks his age. It doesn’t stand out to me.

I have a hard time reconciling the Roderick who fell in love with Annabel Lee and who should have been a poet with the man who bricked up Gris.

I thought they poisoned him with cyanide? And were surprised he took so long to die? The candle is throwing me off about their intentions. Bricking him up conscious after being surprised by him waking up and even taunting him I can see but having a pillar candle already lit? Why have that unless you were performing morbid symbolism on someone who would suffer from it?

  7. I am hoping I don’t have to worry about Lenore; I am hoping we will learn that Morella was unfaithful to Freddy and that Lenore is not an Usher by blood and I hope that would protect her.

I am hoping Juno is not pregnant and can truly escape. And I am hoping that she is in the will even though Roderick didn’t say so when pressed by his progeny a few episodes back.

  8. Well, he’s already had one love affair that broke convention and nothing actually terrible happened. He didn’t lose status. He didn’t lose his home. He just had an ugly breakup.

Isaac hasn’t really faced down his fears like Nigel did. Isaac has only faced them. He has no experience of going through with it and being ok to give him confidence.

Thor has talked about how his only friend was a squirrel, so I'm guessing he was alone. The house wasn't there, at first, I think. So also a lot fewer "boundaries" to confine even anyone who somehow got lost there and died and didn't ascend. It's kind of a wonder he's not insane from the experience.

The squirrel was his only friend when he was still alive, after being abandoned.

I wonder how angry Ghost Squirrel was when Ghost Thor showed up!

Considering the time period Hetty lived in, I can understand Hetty not supporting women going to college or working or handling money. Inferior female brains, y'know. But, ah, what do women riding bicycles have to do with anything?

    Expand

Maybe just too unladylike, given the way one rides a bike :p?

For sure! But there was this whole social campaign/moral panic to try to keep women from riding bicycles. It went beyond “unladylike” and straight into BS pretend “diseases” women would be damaged by, like Bicycle Face.

I can see Hetty buying into it utterly.

  12. I am enjoying the show! My persistent complaint is that the fake clouds if breath are so distractingly fake and those girls just simply do not act cold enough. They do not look or move as if they are starving and freezing. Ok fine I guess they can pass for starving but there is no sense of actual numbing cold.

The actresses are too vigorous. It doesn’t look like they are at the point of delusions and desperation. They would be. I think mostly the show presents it well with script and plot but you see these girls and it’s not jiving. I think that makes the timelines seem off.

If we were a book club and this was a novel we’d have no problem accepting it.

I just googled, “If I am starving, can I eat trees?” The answer is, yes. Yes, I can.

  14. The actress who plays Flower… Does she consider herself a person of color? Flower’s characterization is overtly “hippy” but it doesn’t exclude other identities; I don’t remember if the show has addressed it.

That's basically what happened to Thor when Sam and Jay gave him his Viking funeral.

Weren’t those car headlights they all misinterpreted in the moment?

  16. If the beam comes for you, can you decline? Maybe it came for Hetty—whose character has wanted it very badly—and the story arc will be she decided she wasn’t ready yet after all.

The local library probably has ebooks and audiobooks online. And Trevor could do ebooks if they set up a tablet or something, right?

Alberta can be heard by Alexa. Audiobooks are easy to ask for.

Last season, some other poster pointed out that the Iron Vault demonstrated that ghosts can touch but not pass through iron. That person mused about whether the ghosts could handle iron tools. Putting a few iron dowels in their hands could make them much more independent. Nigel could probably turn the pages of a book!

Back in 1996, didn’t planes have what they have today- a constant ping between the plane and the tower?  They should have an idea of where the plane has been, right?

Yes but Misty killed the black box ping. She, in that moment, didn’t want to be found.

I was having a mini-stroke thinking the actor who played Shauna’s husband was Marc Blucas. It’s not, it’s Warren Kole (there are no time machines, sadly) but it was scary how much he looked and sounded like Blucas.

We are getting Denis Leary vibes in our house.

    That's a great idea! I'd read it!

Well… there’s a two-men Regency romance called Manners & Mannerisms by Tanya Chris that I borrowed from the public library for my Kindle. But I also would prefer to read a Nigel/Isaac romance. Especially if it ended up with them as ghosts at a romantic B&B getaway.

I’m surprised she didn’t document everything Isaac said and just pitch it as a novel.

As for Baxter and the fifing… when Nigel and Isaac took their first walk around the grounds to discuss the peace (and other matters), Nigel told Baxter to stand down and Baxter did. Has there been any fifing since?

Does anyone else think Nigel is a passive-aggressive twit? Too bad there is only one queer ghost, because Isaac doesn't have another potential love interest (except for Nigel's lying ex).

I find him repellent, but then I have Irish roots (Hetty would HATE me!) ;-)

I was surprised he was acting like that. He is usually direct about what he wants and he’s been very gracious and patient about Isaac’s hangups and insecurities.

Being jealous of Hetty didn’t make sense.

Hmmm…. There was a cholera epidemic pre-Revolutionary War and maybe other outbreaks after that?

Wrong wrong wrong! Yellow fever! Whoops. But there was cholera in the first half of the 19th century.

You know Mary from The Secret Garden? She was orphaned by cholera in India. Fun fact! That epidemic spread to New York. Maybe the cholera ghosts were from that wave.
