I can see how Ruby would be drawn to someone like Dorothy, physical attraction aside. Lots of people find partners with similar characteristics to their parents. Comfort in familiarity, I guess. Dorothy seems a lot like Granny - gruff and grumpy surface covering a kind heart. Hell, she even has a crossbow.
