I know we talked about it upthread, but what's wrong with folks just kissing and maybe making out a little, instead of kissing and then, sexy time?  I only watched a couple of episodes of Girls and was surprised to see how quickly they jumped into sex and how often it was so bad.

This rings true to me because that's how college and my 20s were. Bad sex especially. TMI.

  2. I really loved the Canon submission this week! Kudos to Hallie for making me want to rewatch The West Wing when I'm still behind on all the new tv because I can only handle like, two shows.

    So...regular Louis C.K.?

While in college in the mid-1990s, I was a cashier at Best Buy. We had registers that had those check...checkers...attached to them. The check checker was a solid block about the size of half a brick. It had just the arc through which the check was fed. I think it verified the account and routing numbers along the bottom of the checks, although now that I think about it, could that technology have existed then?

I do remember it hooked up via phone line, so it stands to reason that they were tele-verified, just as credit cards were (remember the modem sound during credit card charges back in the day?). I can't remember checks not passing the verification but I can certainly remember credit cards being declined. And the ensuing calls I would have to make to American Express while my line backed up and people got progressively madder and madder at me.

And this has been Check Talk with your U.S. correspondent! Back to you, @Tara Ariano and @Sarah D. Bunting!

I was going to say basically this. It was a HUGE deal when the independent pharmacy where I worked got a fancy computerized cash register in about 1996 that would verify checks electronically as well as run credit cards. Up to then we had been doing MANUAL credit card impressions and calling into Visa, MC, etc. after closing each night to use touchtone to run the card. So many declined charges!

  4. I was happy to see TTaKS covered, but was nervous about how it would be recieved. A lot of UNHhhh fans have been savage about it, but I think the format will grow on people.

Why is it so damn funny to me when Katya quickly mutters "Don't touch me" at Trixie? I just love it. I would watch these girls do anything.

I love it especially because Katya is the one who touches Trixie most of the time, and will even say, "don't touch me" after SHE touches T and then will touch her again. Hilarious.

  5. Okay, I legit snorted at the "flying squirrel" gif, and that is going to be my new name for Brandon. Squirrel for short.

Also, remember how small TVs used to be? All those people watching the wee snack shack TV reminded me of crowding around a 25" CRT with a couple dozen people in my boyfriend's dorm lounge to watch X-Files. No wonder they got away with such "special" effects.

We changed our cable package to save money and lost Logo. I hope VH1 or some other channel airs Bob's Suspiciously Large Woman. I like Bob. I think that's a great title, too.  I'm sure I'll catch this sometime, but I'm impatient.

I'm in the same boat on vacation--no Logo, so no special last night. I don't see it on demand via my direct tv now or my parents' cable.

  7. Totally agree that Shea's runway was weird in the boobs, and I was underwhelmed by her look and her rapping. As always, her dancing and performance were strong overall, though. I'm biased, but while I think the top 4 are all amazing and did great, Sasha was strongest.

Also, Jelly's jeans in the last picture look to be from the Shawshank Correctional Supply Closet.

Seriously. Those jeans do nothing good for Garth's figure and make her legs look about two feet long.

  9. After watching a few of Alexis Michelle's old YouTube videos, I think she just does pretty standard, fishy drag. Which is fine, but agree is not very creative and doesn't lend itself well to the kinds of challenges on Drag Race. From what I've seen, she's a good entertainer, and if she was one of my local queens, I'd totally go see her even though I like funny, weird drag more.

I will say that I like the no-boobs look she had in this video.

That's interesting.  I don't consider Shea and Bob having very much in common at all, except being dark-skinned black men.

Peppermint also gives me nothing of Latrice(except in talking heads) and none of Coco the Dorito at all.

I'll give you trinity, though I don't know that I'd consider her "less" than Shanell or Chad.

Sasha to me, is a mix of Jinxx and Betty, but again, I wouldn't say less.

I agree with you almost 100%. Shea isn't similar to Bob and Peppermint isn't similar to Latrice or Coco to me. At all. I don't really see much of a similarity between Sasha and any other queen from previous seasons, which is something I really like about her. It's not that I think that any of the S9 queens are individually less than others, just that the combination of them isn't as compelling as we've had in previous years and there isn't a standout fave for me--Sasha and Shea are tied in my eyes. It really has been mostly RuPaul's Best Friend Race, which is kinda boring.

Give me "I'm not joking, bitch! At all." any day of the week.

  11. I'll watch the whole thing, but I'm thinking the hour format leaves a little too much wiggle room for Lynch. I mean, this is the guy who made Eraserhead, and if you could sit through that without almost losing your marbles, you're stronger than I am (and I loooooove David Lynch). The original series really had a pretty slow pace, too, but the 42-44 minute episodes kept scenes from going quite as long as they are in these first four of the new series. I am definitely liking the more straightforward narrative that's emerging, but I'm okay with some weird. Cooper emerging from the Black Lodge was pretty hard to sit through, though.

Che (Shay?) was everything in that pilot.  The espadrilles line was awesome! For me the F3 will be Che/Shay, Trinity, but I am 50/50 on whether Sasha or Peppermint will be in the third spot.  Nina and Alexis are going the next 2 episodes for sure.

It's Shea, btw. I'm totally convinced it will be Shea, Sasha, and Trinity as final three, with Shea winning the crown.

Shea and Sasha are just so focused and have amazing chemistry together, and it's exciting to see that emerge on the show. I don't know that any two queens will ever be as perfect a pairing in my eyes as Trixie and Katya (we only got hints of their combined powers in S7), but Shea and Sasha might prove me wrong. They're keeping me interested in this season, which has been flat for me.

Pausing the podcast for a few minutes: Carl is actually a very likely name for a European Prince. As in the Swedish prince Carl Philip, the Swedish king Carl Gustaf, the Danish prince Carl who was elected king of Norway in 1905 (and changed his name to the more Norwegian sounding Haakan, but still.) Okay, royal cop out, will go back to listening to the rest of the episode.

Ahh, my longstanding royal crush. Carl Philip is the hottest of all the princes, in my opinion. Also, Denmark has a Crown Prince Fred(erik). Not as hot.
