I don't have Netflix, but my parents do, so I created a list on their account that I work my way through whenever I stay at their house to cat-sit.  They just announced they'd be leaving again on the 19th for two weeks, apologizing that it's not that long since they got back from their last trip -- I thought about milking it, but went ahead and confessed that I really needed them to be gone on the 24th and several days after, so this is great news.

You do know they can add you to their account so you can watch stuff at your own place correct?

Right now Real Housewives of Atlanta is a disaster because Porsha Williams, who has preached about the evils of homosexuality and has had some same sex experiences, has decided to go scorched earth on Kandi Burruss about Kandi's own sexual history with women. Porsha first denied that she hit on Kandi, accused Kandi of being a closeted lesbian in a 7 year relationship with a woman, admitted that she hit on Kandi when Kandi presented text messages that corroborated Kandi's statement, and then accused Kandi of wanting to drug and rape her, meaning Porsha. It is some really sick shit.

Of the housewives franchises, New Jersey and Atlanta have the biggest issues with LGBT people and issues. Atlanta had a gay supporting cast member, Miss Lawrence, walk because of the tokenism and casual homophobia (calling people queen or the f word). They cast Amiyah Scott and I don't think she even filmed for 2 weeks before she left. And there is a contingent of viewers who feel like any deviation from heterosexuality is evil and deviant. It's really not pretty.

The fact that a gay white man (Andy Cohen) produces this crap makes me stabby. This is why our community can't come together. We have a lot of horrible gay and lesbian white people in Hollywood producing garbage content.

  3. They're also airing far less UK based shows and some of the ones they bring over are already canceled after the first season across the pond.

If it weren't for Orphan Black and Broadchurch's final seasons, Doctor Who, Class (which we still don't know if it's renewed), the Graham Norton Show and Planet Earth II I wouldn't be watching anything on the channel.

  4. So this conversation was happening in the Race & Ethnicity thread about Jennifer Beals and it moved to her work on the L Word and we were talking about how bad the show was written. I mentioned how bad Pretty Little Liars is too because of I. Marlene (I never respond to my detractors on twitter) King. I hate that they are lesbians themselves because they give us a bad name.

What I still can't wrap my head around is why Showtime gave Ilene Fucking Chaiken full reign over the show when she had two other co-creators, Michele Abbot and Kathy Greenberg.

    See this interview http://www.afterellen.com/tv/48158-l-word-co-creators-michele-abbott-and-kathy-greenberg-break-their-silence

I feel like there's even less representation of LGBTQ people on TV now than even two years ago and when it does happen it's often horribly written. WTF???

My goodness, I had no idea that she does this to LGBT people of color.   She is a hack. There is no doubt about it.. I  knew that she was bad, but, I never thought it was to that extent.

Taking my comment to the LGBT thread. Follow me there.

  6. Who else here is pissed that it takes them forever to announce premiere dates? Like Broadchurch is already airing in the UK and still we have no idea when it will come to this channel. Almost every other spring show has had their premiere date announced but not this one. It took them forever to decide on premiere dates for Doctor Who and Class and Planet Earth II.

She ruined the show with her awful writing and I will never forgive her for killing Dana off the show.

When she killed off the two older queer women and had Jamal sleep with Alicia Keys' character on Empire I stopped watching that show. I will never watch anything she does again. Remember, it was only due to backlash that she added more POC to the L Word. I don't know why Chaiken and I. Marlene King (Pretty Little Liars) continue to get work when they are so horrible. I stopped watching PLL when they kept killing the queer women of color and made the first villain a trans woman and then killed her too.

I wish that the show had explored why Bette as a Black/biracial woman only dated White women, had White friends and only interacted with White LGBT people.  She seemed to have trouble connecting with Black people.  Was it because she was rejected by her Black father for being a lesbian and by extension the Black community for homophobia.   I always felt that Ilene Chaken should have explored this angle in Bette, it could have given her more depth.

That was Ilene Fucking Chaiken's fault for the show not having POC other than Bette and Kit. Again, you can thank Jennifer for having her family on the show be bi-racial.

It's usually more of an issue with broadcast networks than cable, but it is still a potential revenue steam for any show. I've never seen a Freeform show in syndication on other channels though.

That's because none of their shows have ever reached 100 episodes and are no longer airing on Freeform.

  10. So now the boys room is populated with Jackson (12), Justin (14), James (15), Jason (16), Jed and Jer (18), Josiah (20), Joseph (22- until he gets married) and Tyler (9). The only question mark is JD. Where is he living? All of those tween and teen boys in one room must be so disgusting.

The girls room is Jana, Hannie (11), Jenny (9), Jordyn (8) and Josie (7).

This family is so jacked up it's not funny.

I don't know how old Joe is, but I read where Kendra is 18.  So young to be in this kind of spot light.  It appears the Duggar men aren't locked into their first courtship like the women are (and use the term "men/women" loosely, doesn't sound right saying boys/girls).

I think John David said he was going to be a life-long bachelor.  Something has really soured him on commitment and relationship.

I want Jana and JD to escape. They are the only two of the older kids who have any hope of not falling into the Gothard trap of having loads of kids due to their age.

  12. It's so sad that Jana doesn't even know today is International Women's Day and A Day Without Women because she's the chief cook and bottle washer of the siblings. Run Jana Run!!!

On another note Jeremiah, Josiah, Jana and JD are going to get left behind because the only other person they will let go of in the first batch of kids is Jed because he wasn't the sinner twin.

I'm still expecting this... which will be the jumping off point for Regina to break up with Luca and come back and live in the guest house because John's dead and she'll help emotionally support Kathryn.

Regina moved back into the guest house when her ex left town. That's why Luca was leaving the Kennish mansion.

I'm glad this show is ending just like I'm glad they are wrapping up Broadchurch, Ripper Street, Black Sails, Orphan Black, The Americans (after next season), Sherlock (we think) and Episodes because not every show needs to last as long as lets say Law & Order SVU.

I hate that Netflix and Marvel insist on 13 episodes when Stranger Things and other shows on their platform tell their story with a much shorter episode order. For those into Marvel comics who else could they have featured that wouldn't have had the racially uncomfortable backstory and fit into the Defenders crossover show?

I can't believe we have to watch this to understand the Defenders.

Then they made a mistake by having a rainstorm taking place in February in Moscow, with a magazine touting the Olympics (which would not have been the case with the boycotted summer olympics) on an end table. It isn't a big deal, but I couldn't quite figure out which olympics they were referring to, given the summer weather in Moscow, and the winter weather in Maryland, which was partly due to my confusing the date Chernenko becoming head of the Communist Party in February, and becoming President of the Presidium in April.

Showrunners make mistakes about the weather all the time. It used to be worse before people could voice their opinions online.

Why do they have to show that? They don't particularly have to show anything.

It will be the backdrop for how they interact with the world. They've always shown notable events and people since it began.

What doesn't make sense? P&E had completely different jobs. They had their high school aged "son" Tuan. Since the show is now in 1984, Paige would be 17 or 18.

That is now a completely different family - about 18 years later.

This is a newer assignment for P&E not in the past. They make it very clear when they do flashbacks and this wasn't one of them.

Because it changed how the US government related to the Soviet Union. Gorbachev was a game-changer.

Hopefully, all the Stan face time is not an indicator that the character is going to get as many scenes as he did prior to season 4. He remains the major character who is most poorly drawn, and I don't think he is salvageable .

It looks like season 5 will encompass Chernenko's  12 months in office, and start season 5 just as Gorbachev takes power. The timeline is a bit off, however: Tonight's episode takes place during the '84 Olympics, but they were in February, and in tonight's episode had Chernenko in power already, and he didn't actually take the office until April, and was dead 11 months later.

From wiki- Konstantin Ustinovich Chernenko was a Soviet politician and the fifth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He led the Soviet Union from 13 February 1984 until his death thirteen months later, on 10 March 1985.

The Winter Olympics went from Feb. 9-19.

So the timeline works out. Fields and Weisberg are sticklers for this part of the story to be exact.

I do believe your theory about where they will finish the season is correct because they have to show Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika programs and how they effect the Jennings' and their work.
