Brutal is the word I keep coming back to to describe this movie. And while understated is an odd word to use when describing a man who kills people with a ball peen hammer, that's exactly how I would describe Joaquin Phoenix's performance. Other standouts were Judith Roberts as Joe's mother, and Ekaterina Samsonov as a tougher-than-she-looks Nina.
