(L/R) Molly Kearney as Barbara, Gigi Zumbado as Ceci, Tony Cavalero as Vic, Alex Tarrant as Noa, Harriet Dyer as Colette, Tim Meadows as Gregg

DMV is a CBS workplace comedy TV Series set at the place everyone dreads going most: California, at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Meet quirky, lovable characters, doing a thankless job, where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. It is a good thing that they have each other. Watch this crew of lovable misfits tackle bureaucracy, bad attitudes, and busted printers — all with minimum wage and maximum sarcasm. It’s the job nobody wants, but the hangout you won’t want to miss.

DMV is based on a Katherine Heiny’s short story “Chicken-Flavored and Lemon-Scented”, which centers on a driving examiner named Colette who realizes that Ted Bundy must’ve had a driving test at some point with someone like her overseeing it. She then sets out to turn her erstwhile mundane job into a hunt for the extraordinary. It can be read at Electric Lit:

Chicken-Flavored and Lemon-Scented

or in the book "Games and Rituals: Stories", a collection of eleven short stories by Katherine Heiny.

Spoiler

Molly Kearney as Barbara, the boss of this branch who considers herself one of the gang, even though "the gang" does not. A glass-half-full, over-sharer who is incredibly inappropriate and terrible at reading a room, Barbara cares deeply and tries very hard but misses the mark.

Tony Cavalero as Vic, who, before landing at the DMV, worked as a bouncer, security guard, head cook and has found his true calling as a driving examiner. While Colette takes the nervous drivers, he takes the entitled ones who deserve to be taken down a notch. A lovable scumbag and odd-ball, Vic has no edit, doesn't think about consequences, and has a wildly inflated sense of himself.

Gigi Zumbado as Ceci, a scrappy, tough, and sassy, counter representative who has no time for anyone's nonsense. She's impatient, critical, and thinks she can do everyone's job better than they can.

Alex Tarrant as Noa, a dreamy, charismatic, golden boy who seems destined for much greater things than working at the DMV. He is good at everything and never gets into awkward situations. A star surfer, he lives the "Pura Vida" life and doesn't sweat the small stuff.

Harriet Dyer as Colette, The driving examiner with a huge heart, Colette takes the scared and nervous people because she's calming and patient and genuinely roots for them to pass. Smart, self-aware, and working on herself, Colette is adorably neurotic, bad with boundaries, and often prioritizes other peoples' feelings over her own.

Tim Meadows as Gregg, former high school English teacher, the driving examiner who likes to get through the driving tests, and the day, as quickly as possible. An uncanny ability to make dead-on observations of those around him, Gregg is sardonic, defeated and would love nothing more than to retire.
