The Residence used the nonfiction book "The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House" by Kate Andersen Brower as a reference to get an accurate representation of the White House staff in the 132 room residence and an accurate depiction of the upstairs/downstairs/back passages dynamics surrounding the First Family. An eccentric Detective Cordelia Cupp, is called in to investigate a murder that occurs during a state dinner with some Australian dignitaries. The investigation begins to uncover the interpersonal conflicts between the 157 personnel that work in residence at the White House.
